  • Writing our first metal song (regardless of the genre) can be a bit overwhelming at first, especially if you don't have a band, or your thinking of forming one, and you are not the most flashy of guitar players! So I hope that in this video I can convince you that with simple riffs and a few tools you can start writing your awesome music!

    Remember guys, take this with a pinch of salt! There is no ideal correct way to write songs, in fact the way that works for you IS the correct way! However, if you don't know where to start, I hope this video will help! :))

    That progression in the beginning reminds me of “The Element Of One” by Killswitch Engage. Drop C is the superior tuning for MetalCore.

    Great video man I really enjoyed it! Another tip for aspiring song writers. For a bridge section: if you were playing minor chords you can change to major visa versa. This will help contrast when falling back into the chorus ❤

    Hi Filipe, I recently discovered your channel and I am loving your content, I have one question, when you are writing this riffs, how do you know that the notes from one riff are going to work with the notes of the other riff when layering them at the end, do you try things until it sounds good, are you applying theory? Thanks!

      ahh no mate, I am not a very theory kind of guy... well, I am lying, I do play riffs within a certain scale, so then if you find the chords of that scale they always sound good! Or even two riffs completely different but in the same scale won't clash (much). That's a far as I go with theory for music or riff writing! Hope that helps mate!

      It is possible yes! It would probably sound a bit shit though because emulating guitars is really hard, but it is possible yes!

      I am Filipe Martins i thought it was the chord progression VS the tab, chord progression wise that would be correct i think, and you used chord notation

      haha a lot of people say that! It's quite possible given those riffs are mega generic and very common in metalcore! :)

      @@musicinsession yeah, personally I've broken from the older simplistic metalcore writing and I'm more onto the djenty kind of modern metalcore sound. I get a lot of inspiration from stuff like monuments.
      I actually just uploaded my guitar practice video of a riff/song I'm working on. I think you'll like it and It'd be cool to hear your opinion on it. There's two videos... both basically the same thing. Also... I just subbed to you today as you have great content, plus you're in London just like me.
      who knows... Maybe we can team up and make something together. Anywhoo, keep up with the videos.
