The character of Abed is especially genius, cause it allowed creators to effectively break the fourth wall without breaking the fourth wall, and remind the viewers of what they’re watching while still remaining in character
I love how the claymation episode is essentially two episodes in one. Try listening to it without looking at the screen, and it becomes a very different episode (which they even reference later on).
Rick and Morty very much runs on the fuel of "There are no stakes, nothing matters". RCT is all about the stakes, the episode basically sets the tone for the rest of the series.
The best thing about Community is how it uses pop culture references to make you feel cool and accepted for being "in" on them as part of that geeky culture (and there are such a wide range of pop culture references that there's something for everyone), unlike others show *cough cough* that just use geeky references as a lazy punchline to make fun of...
especially in the DnD episode, if you know what they're talking about you feel more immersed into the episode, as if you were playing an actual DnD session
It feels like this video was written by someone who just watched community for the first time cause they were instructed to make a video about community. In many ways community is more genius than Rick and Morty but this video seems like just a little superficial exploration of R&Ms less popular cousin. I think that exploring certain episodes in individual videos would be a much better approach. Also, as a little extra, I would like to point out how Community's cast is arguably the most talented sitcom cast ever, people like Donald Glover, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, John Oliver, Ken Jeong...
I give wisecrack credit for doing one on community but i see what you mean. I felt the same way when they did that video on Spongebob. They used examples from season 4, while explaining harmons philosophy. There is also a lot more to explore, as you said, they could do a whole video on each episode alone and the ideas explored in each episode, as they did with rick and morty.
this is is about as deep as the philosophy for rick and mouth video goes, or any other of their “philosophy of xxxx” goes, they just dedicated more videos to rock and marty bc of the popularity at the time. i don’t understand how ur comparing tens of R&M videos to one community video lol. compare the first OG “philosophy of” videos if anything
One of the most fascinating things about Community is the way in which the writers are able to simultaneous lampoon Sitcom genre tropes while also USING those very same tropes in its storytelling.
It's true. I could never put in to words why I loved Community so much. I will rewatch this show forever. It subverts expectations and makes you think a little deeper into the characters. Everyone in this show is so fucked up but the show presents respects them and portray them as lovable people. Thank you for this video.
I watched Community for the first time about a month ago and I have been obsessed with it ever since. What’s weird is that me watching Community in the first place was to get away from what was happening to me irl - exams and stress. Meanwhile the show I was watching was telling me to focus on real life because if you distract and think you’re real life is a tv show, then your missing out on making your life more like this show - unpredictable and enjoyable.
"Entertainment is that which reaffirms our values; art is that which challenges them." Folklore and stories have been how we make ourselves think forever.
We did Brecht's "Caucasian Chalk Circle" in college. At one point we scripted an actor calling out "Line" right near the middle point of the show. It was by far my favorite device we used to remind the audience that they're watching a play; everything got really tense in the room because the audience never once realized it was scripted. We let it stew for a while, definitely getting people to think things like "well, it's a college production, but still."
Pretty much every episode in season 1 & 2 has a moment like this too. Every episode makes a black joke, usually at Pierce's expense, but the Drow triggers everyone.
@Noé Lopez That's because some people - not just of color - actually are and actually can't. And some of those will be persistently loud about it until they've nagged their way into getting to hold a speech at the UN.

Because eventually, it all will." ~ Abed Nadir 613
I just finished the series last week. I was avoiding season six, since half the cast had left the show for different reasons, but then I realized the rest of the the show was just as good as the other seasons. The new characters made for good additions, the writing was excellent and I laughed just as much as I did with the other seasons (except season 4. Something was off with it. People could smell it...). So I moved on from the fact that Pierce, Troy and Shirley wouldn't be there anymore and went on with it. The end was heartwarming, a little bittersweet, but that's life. I feel like an orphan of the show. Now I can only hope for the movie. Fingers crossed 😁
I don't think I really agree. Community uses the language of TV genres and tropes to weave far more complicated stories and present something new, but it's never really criticizing them. It is a jubilation of this particular language. It assumes you already speak this language and then proceeds to use wordplay with it. Oh and Don Quijote is a much better parallel, in my opinion, Brecht was a bit of a bad choice.
I, too, thought that the Brecht reference was somewhat forced. Brecht's epic theater was developed after the great catastrophies of the 20th century and during an era of global ideological polarization. In his view, theater was meant to transform individuals and thus society and not merely to question established tropes and genre conventions.
@@styx9193 I think Wisecrack has really been half-assing it for a very long time now. They have a simple formula which they follow: take a product of pop culture, take a work of high art or a philosopher and jampack as many comparisons as possible whether they fit or not. But hey, people seem to enjoy it, so my complaints are probably exaggerated.
I think Community does have some criticisms. The expectation of Britta and Jeff being endgame or Annie vs Britta making some love triangle are things other sitcoms would pounce on, but Community stands out in its unique way of dealing with romantic relationships between characters. But the criticisms are subtle, and much like Abed, Community is also a celebration of media to a new level. It critcises recycling tropes at face value and instead twists tropes to make a newer level of humour and storytelling. It's a criticism of not using the medium to its fullest, and a celebration of what television and storytelling can be.

My thoughts, exactly. Yet again, they did a real sloppy job here. Like they have a schedule for the uploads, but not much else. And dark souls - I can understand, they were desperate to get into a hype train, but community? Half a decade old show that's kinda popular on Netflix? I don't see anything justifying this. And the whole episode feels like it was made out of really stretched out thoughts they just had to fill with references from the show.
@@MrFiremagnet Totally. Even the basic premise of Community as Brecht's Epic Theatre is pretty weak. Community is absolutely fueled by emotionality; I've rewatched it plenty of times just to feel close to the characters again, as if they were friends. Which is a bit of a shame, because there's tons of things to say about Community. But whatevs, let's hope the next one's better.
Thank you so much for pointing out those awful examples of season 4... I feel that Community deserves a deeper introspection and analysis and even though I liked this video, I still feel that the intellectual grandeur of this series hasn't been really well explained
I was totally noticing that too. Far too many S4 clips when discussing Harmon. I did wonder if it's because Harmon's writing tends to have longer set ups and is therefore harder to use as bite size clips, where as s4's writing is basically made for canned laugher. Buuuut I've seen other video essayists use other clips so I doubt that's the reason.
Wow! I would have assumed it was a reference to how we all return to comfortable situations rather than taking risks and seeking quality relationships. Our communication in society is very challenged by our casual references to stories that we all understand differently. This just got even more meta for me!
Quick note, the Jeff/Annie thing was mainly fueled by online fandom reactions to the couple. It wasn't necessarily as deep as subverting expectations vis-a-vis Jeff/Britta but still meaningful since it involved a kind of collaboration with the viewer. There's a lovely quote of Dan during a panel saying the way the story progresses and the way fans react to something organically creates relationships.
Just finished this show and absolutely loved it. Put it off for ages as I heard there was a massive drop in quality, tbh I enjoyed seasons 4-6 just as much as 2-3, the whole thing is amazing.
The point of a clip show has always been for the cast and crew to pretty much have a week off, by using clips of old shows instead of filming a whole new episode. Community not only subverted the clip show trope by "remembering" things that hadn't happened on the show, but they used their clip show to run around the studio lot filming ENTIRELY NEW 20 second scenes, changing sets and costumes to reflect all the old episodes. The Community clip show is the hardest they worked in the entire run, and the joy they express when talking about that episode is everything you need to know about why I love this show so damned much.
Community is by far one of my favorite shows, and I feel that it's completely underrated since the only people I meet who has even seen an episode, are online, in person it's like nobody has ever heard of the show
Someone obviously never watched Carl Sagan hosting Cosmos, or Bill Nye, or Sesame Street, or Mr Roger's Neighborhood, or even more modern stuff like Blade Runner or Ghost in the Shell or other bits of science fiction intended to make the audience introspective.
It's sobering when you realize you miss the Community characters and wish they were still with you or that you could be with them and though you might like to think of yourself as a Jeff or a Brita, you're actually closer to Abed.
Community was referenced in their video on references in rick and morty. There was also a video by leo ashe on the philosophy of community with wisecrack hastagged, that could be it.
I just finished watching community for the first time a couple of weeks ago so I happy you made this video now. The show was awesome, totally different for other sitcoms making it a great change of pace. Liked you analysis of Abed, him and Troy were what made the show great. I really missed their silly ending when Troy left.
This show was so good it makes other shows less funny. When you see what's possible, everything else starts to look lazy. The fake clip show is my shining example. A traditionally cheap and easy episode to produce becomes one of the hardest most expensive. It's genius.
I mean if it helps, that’s not really a writer-intended plot point that’s being foretold, it was just the actress exiting. The only thing that’s being “spoiled” is the disappointment you may feel when her character doesn’t come back. if you know about community then you won’t get far without hearing about all the struggles it had as it replaced its cast, been almost cancelled, and had transformed by the end
Thanks for bringing up my man Bertolt. My German highschool was named after him and you basically couldn't not see some of his work. Gets quite meta which is refreshing when coming from the classical drama.
I feel that ‘Spaced’ explored themes in a similar way. Using pop culture references and cliches coupled to a meta commentary exploring it relationship with those references. As well as being hilarious.
Are we all a bit like abed? Yes. Our whole cultere seems to digress into tiktok and instagram making memes (references, and references on refeerences) the only way we communicate...
That's literally how all language works. Words, and their meanings, don't exist "in nature". Certain sounds or squiggly lines become words when they are given a meaning by reference, or in relation, to an existing word or concept. Even the original words, in the oldest languages, were just abstract references to things that did exist "in nature" (i.e. trees, animals, water, a day, coldness, pain, etc.) References on references on references isn't a digression; it's what's been growing and evolving human communication since the dawn of civilisation.
So... Abed is the archetype for Wanda in WandaVision. If Abed is in grief and has the power of Wanda Maximoff, I can totally seem him hold an entire town stranded and play out TV plots in his mind.
Community was the show that I was waiting for my entire life without ever knowing it. It gave me the ability to recognize the mediocrity that exists in "hit shows." My media consumption has been impacted ever since.
My buddy and I often cite Community, not only for its witty humor, but its meta commentary. He and I believe Abed is actually the show "community" in human or cast form. While we haven't delved this deep into it, I feel we hit the same nerve you guys over at Wise Crack have. I feel like you guys hit this one right on the head.
The concept that some of life's problems comes from internalizing the media we consume would explain why people who watch a lot of reality TV tend to have an impossible time navigating simple disagreements without dragging it out for weeks on end.
I’m giving a second view on the show because the first time i’ve get stucked in season 4, somehow i felt like the group changed from comunity to scooby doo, now i will go to all the seasons
Community and Parks and Rec got me through college. It was amazing to watch them every Thursday on NBC. Watching season 2 of Community with my friends back then was such a great experience. Sadly the show died after Season 3. Even when Dan Harmon came back from the grave...
I personally love when people try to act like the media they consume doesn't affect who they are as people when you can actively see how it shapes them kind of how people say one thing but then do something totally different
I remember as child that many of the other children would _coincidentally_ also sometimes act like people on TV: E.g. Girls and boys sought partners, everyone was spreading rumours about who was together (or more like who they *thought* were together), and the people who were the best at using violence were seen as cool and got respect for it. I must have assumed all along that this tendency just dissappeared as people grew older but now I see that some people continue to do it even though they are _ADULTS_ even though others depend on them being in touch with reality.

Community was a pivotal point in my life. I felt like Dan Harmon after attending my community college and having an ENG class that was VERY similar.
I'm so impressed with the way they incorporated Bert Brecht into this video essay. These are always so clever, I love it :)
Community needs to be as known as the office smh
Community > The Office
Why?
@@LuisSierra42 If you need to ask, you are streets behind
@@GoN54L0 hehe, i have never watched it
@@LuisSierra42 Its on Netflix, really worth the bench :D
Community is by far one of my favorite shows, and I feel that it's completely underrated since the only people I meet who has even seen an episode, are online, in person it's like nobody has ever heard of the show
Tv don't make us smarter but surely makes us feel smarter
Like Rick and Morty
They show documentaries and educational programmes on tv. Also, eat shit for spewing it.
@@LuisSierra42 crazy. Like it's the same creator as community😂
If tv doesn't make us smarter books certainly don't
Someone obviously never watched Carl Sagan hosting Cosmos, or Bill Nye, or Sesame Street, or Mr Roger's Neighborhood, or even more modern stuff like Blade Runner or Ghost in the Shell or other bits of science fiction intended to make the audience introspective.
It's sobering when you realize you miss the Community characters and wish they were still with you or that you could be with them and though you might like to think of yourself as a Jeff or a Brita, you're actually closer to Abed.
I could've sworn they did a Community episode before. Do I have Changnesia?
You wish you have Changnesia, that way you could watch Community all over again as if was the first time.
Community was referenced in their video on references in rick and morty. There was also a video by leo ashe on the philosophy of community with wisecrack hastagged, that could be it.
Me too. Something about referencing. Or maybe that was another video essay
No, I deandn't think so.
I just finished watching community for the first time a couple of weeks ago so I happy you made this video now. The show was awesome, totally different for other sitcoms making it a great change of pace.
Liked you analysis of Abed, him and Troy were what made the show great. I really missed their silly ending when Troy left.
I talk to “the audience” like Abed.
Just to make sure that if this is a show that at least it will be an entertaining one.
I'd say Community and Arrested Development are in a league of their own, there will never be anything like it again
I envy the person who had to find and edit all of these clips from the show .
Are you not allowed to watch the show?
@@SuperMrDelgado they probably wouldn't get paid for it tho
This show was so good it makes other shows less funny. When you see what's possible, everything else starts to look lazy. The fake clip show is my shining example. A traditionally cheap and easy episode to produce becomes one of the hardest most expensive. It's genius.
thank you for putting a spoiler warning....
after you've already said Shirley leaves....... ;)
If it's any comfort she gets worse every season, and she only leaves on the last season
Some time ago I had Brecht in school while watching community at home
and I was like: Is that the thing?
It seems to be
I spent 1 h at the office. Most of the time im home. THATS WHY I NEED EARBUDS
I haven't clicked faster on any video.
same same
This
Literally said "yess" out loud when I saw it
I thought it was a mirage
"He struggles to deal with his buddy leaving to explore the world by boat with the host of Reading Rainbow." I lmao'd XD
Also since I’m on the spectrum I can identify More with that character than almost any character from any show ever
Good for you.
Same
*STREETS* *AHEAD*
I watch it Start to End about 3 times a year. It really is a great show that, like Newsradio, was screwed by the network but STILL succeeded
Are we all a bit like abed? Yes. Our whole cultere seems to digress into tiktok and instagram making memes (references, and references on refeerences) the only way we communicate...
Hence the development of metaphor; have we always been like this, digressing into reference? Why?
That's literally how all language works. Words, and their meanings, don't exist "in nature". Certain sounds or squiggly lines become words when they are given a meaning by reference, or in relation, to an existing word or concept. Even the original words, in the oldest languages, were just abstract references to things that did exist "in nature" (i.e. trees, animals, water, a day, coldness, pain, etc.)
References on references on references isn't a digression; it's what's been growing and evolving human communication since the dawn of civilisation.
oh man that last episode with Donald Glover was rough to get through. Enough tears flowed for the Reading Rainbow guy's boat.
It's one of the most awaited video. Community my one of the favorite show. Kinda wanted Jared to do it but this is also pretty good.
I did it first though! 😂 ruclips.net/video/VQI-_cxd_Kw/видео.html
So... Abed is the archetype for Wanda in WandaVision. If Abed is in grief and has the power of Wanda Maximoff, I can totally seem him hold an entire town stranded and play out TV plots in his mind.
I can’t believe you show a clip of Chidi and Eleanor from Good Place while covering couples that needlessly get together. Know Your Shows!
I literally just finished watching community for the first time. Thank you wisecrack
I watch Fox News, TLC and Lifetime and I can feel that I’m at super saiyan genius god level....yep.
Tier 6 Lotus
Community is pretty young. We try not to philosophize it.
I'm a simple man, I see Community, I click.
Thanks wisecrack! You once again proved that this is one of the most important RUclips channels around. Keep up the good work.
This show slaps watched it multiple times still fire
Fuck yeah
Community was the show that I was waiting for my entire life without ever knowing it. It gave me the ability to recognize the mediocrity that exists in "hit shows." My media consumption has been impacted ever since.
One of my very favorite channels talking about one of my very favorite shows about one of my very favorite topics; what could go wrong?
Technically, and not specifically about that, a lot.
This video is amazing. When I studied theatre, Brecht was my favorite playwright and community was my favorite show. I never made the connection.
30 years from now I'll be pestering my grandkids to watch this show
check back to see how it goes
Look to avoid black ice.
Tell them about the D&D episode... then watch them freak out trying to find an illegal bootleg of it on the dark web.
Basically: Dan Harmon > Disney
The concept that some of life's problems comes from internalizing the media we consume would explain why people who watch a lot of reality TV tend to have an impossible time navigating simple disagreements without dragging it out for weeks on end.
#AndAMovie before I get struck by lightening and die...
I’m giving a second view on the show because the first time i’ve get stucked in season 4, somehow i felt like the group changed from comunity to scooby doo, now i will go to all the seasons
BLESS THIS TIMELINE FOR WISECRACK MAKING A COMMUNITY VIDEO
Love to see that people are still making videos on the community
OH MY GOD THE DAY IS FINALLY HERE! MY FAVOURITE MEDIA ANALYSIS CHANNEL HAS MADE A VIDEO ABOUT MY FAVOURITE SHOW!
Community and Parks and Rec got me through college. It was amazing to watch them every Thursday on NBC. Watching season 2 of Community with my friends back then was such a great experience. Sadly the show died after Season 3. Even when Dan Harmon came back from the grave...
If you’re in the comments, you’re a little bit like Abed
I personally love when people try to act like the media they consume doesn't affect who they are as people when you can actively see how it shapes them kind of how people say one thing but then do something totally different
And please do not call Community "the other show". I love Rick and Morty, but Community is streats ahead of it
Yeah agreed. Rick and Morty is a bit "meta", but Community is on another level
Finally the Dan Harmon show I actually like.
Others: I'm a nerd so I watch Big Bang Theory.
Me: real nerd watch Community.
true
I remember as child that many of the other children would _coincidentally_ also sometimes act like people on TV:
This show is streets ahead.
You didn't warn me for spoilers of HIMYM... I didn't know T&R ended up together :(
Honestly It stopped interesting when the lawyer guy went back to teach, and the cast dramatically changed.
The final season & the final episode specially was a well done conclusion giving the (characters bleed) circumstances like they said in the show .
The way that Abed boils everything down to TV/movie archetypes is quite Jungian as well
The way Abed was raised by television makes his obsession with being embedded in TV situations Freudian as well.
