On one hand, I can genuinely believe that the people in charge of the show believe in the messages they're trying to put out, it's just unfortunate that literally the only way to spread that message is to work with the type of people they're criticizing. Basically the Starlight situation. Trying to do as much good as you can even if you're working with people who don't share those intentions.
But on the other hand, the fact that Amazon can approve of an anti-corporate message is indicative of the fact that they know they can spin that message for profit, which they are.
The real question to consider is whether all this does more harm than good.

It’s almost a perfect mirror image of what happens in Hollywood.
A monster is initially exposed, no one in Hollywood says anything at first, then more and more people come out with similar accounts, then a bunch of people in the industry try to “disprove” the rumors, then more and more people come out after that. Eventually, the outpour of accounts is just too heavy for the lie to hold and they’re ousted from the industry. People then forget about all of the people who defended the culprit and life continues on as normal until the next big person is ousted.

I remember that one scene where they show Queen Mave and her ex-girlfriend the designs for their outfits and they say that one of them had to wear more masculine clothing since they were trying to paint their relationship in a more hetero-normative picture. It shows that a lot of big companies like Vought don’t really care about representation or being progressive but rather it’s all just a plastic facade they put up for the sake of boosting their image among the media.

Also i think ur a bit ignorant to the millions of people in the U.S. (black people, other POC, and LGBTQ+ folk) that ARE right now treated as "foreigners" in this country. There are people that have less access to food, healthcare, and opportunity than the majority of straight white people who get to live their lives never worring about things like discrimination and being outcasted. Most people just want to provide for themselves and their families. I dont think we"re on the wrong side here man but the enemy is not "the left" the enemies are those who wish to exploit us and take our individual liberties away. (i.e. corporations, politicians )
we are all just people, doing whats right is making sure EVERYONES children get to grow up in a better world not just our own. Thats what people like BLM and antifa and most on the left fight for. Its good to think about your own children for sure, but that is a purely selfish desire to harm others so your kids can be happy/safe. I would love to have kids one day, but if they cant grow up in a free and safe world than my soul will be crushed.

The motif of Homelander solemnly saying “You’re the real heroes.” Is so brilliant because, in addition to virtue-signaling using patriotism and Americana, he’s exploiting our ego and desire for undeserved praise. Even though the adulation Homelander receives is just as undeserved because he was created in a lab. His abilities were given to him and could’ve been given to someone else had Vought chosen to experiment on a different woman. It’s subtle elements like that line that make The Boys such a great show.

By that exact logic though, DC comics Superman is also not a real hero. Superman is just a random man from the planet Krypton who gets superpowers under Earth's yellow sun. The planet Krypton orbited under a red sun. Every single Kryptonian that ever existed could have gotten superpowers and become a superhero if they had come to Earth. Also by DC comics universe logic, any human from Earth could become a superhero if they went to a planet with a blue sun. (In one DC comic that actually happened when Superman's adopted dad Johnathan Kent went to a planet with a blue sun and temporarily got Superman like superpowers.)
I agree with your main point though. Homelander is only loved and respected because he has superpowers and because he lies about fighting to defend America, not because of anything he actually did.
Also I also think it's true that many people really do enjoy and appreciate empty compliments.

To be fair, Wanda was the most powerful one in that shot. Thanos smacks around Danvers, and barely registers her photon blasts, but he had to activate an emergency bombardment because Wanda was about to singlehandedly kill him and he couldn't do a thing about it. Also, Wanda is the far more interesting character. We see her face adversity and loss repeatedly and keep rising above it, and developing. With Captain Marvel we get "Oh look, this woman is super powerful, and a woman! Look how bad ass and self assured she is! And she's a woman! And now she's even more powerful! Have we mentioned she's a woman?" We're told she's struggled against adversity all of her life, but never really shown it in a meaningful way. I can't remember who did it, but there was a video that broke down how they could have re-edited that film to make her story much more interesting and actually shown her growth. But as presented, we had a movie that broke one of the cardinal rules of telling a good story, Show, Don't Tell.
Given her power levels in the comics, I hope they aren't as ham fisted with Monica Rambeau/Spectrum. It would be far too easy to fall into the same trap, except this time it would be "Look how powerful she is, and she's a Black Woman!", especially after the passing of Chadwick Boseman meaning they have to re-examine any plans for Black Panther and Wakanda. Yes, I'm being cynical but I can easily see a suit in an office saying "we lost the original black headliner, let's push Spectrum into production to make sure we hold on to that demographic" (If they really feel the need to do that sort of virtue signaling, and make sure they have a black lead for a movie to push forward right away, Sam becoming Cap would be best and feel the most natural) With both Tony and Steve gone, if they do a Spectrum movie it should be building her up and ending with her being the new leader of the Avengers (which she was for a while in the comics), or at the least setting that up for her next appearance.

It shows even when media is like, here, we're representing you, they do it in a way that says there's a right way to be gay, or even straight or a minority, etc.

The superhero genre is a modern elaboration upon mythic fable tropes. It is rarely concerned with what is 'logical,' and never with what is 'necessary.' Its power comes from abstraction and estrangement. Try to look for what a scene means and represents, not how believably it plays out; start in on the story logic, and you're ice skating up a hill, Bud.

@@benmarton7849 Yes but it also relies on a willing suspension of disbelief. And It's hard to believe that in a critical moment like that, ONLY the females would be in that scene without some kind of setup from previous scenes. They could have even made it more organic by having females intercept while she's flying, but adding that group close up scene was just so unnecessary and distracted from its real purpose.
Like that scene in The Boys when they beat up Stormfront, no team poses, no girls get it done, just a straight up brawl. It didn't pull you out of your suspension and kept you immersed in the fable. Which is kinda what people tend to complain about but can't articulate completely. It wasn't the girl power that was jarring, it was that it pulled them out of the story because it was clearly a pr scene.

@@kyoken8691 I understand your concern, but at this point, it's down to expectation, context, and buy-in. I certainly had no trouble willingly suspending any disbelief, and I'm a forty-eight year old man who has been reading superhero comics for well over three decades (and appreciating good cinema almost as long). I do know this: the roar that went up in the cinema was evidence enough for me that the moment worked, and my teenage daughter still smiles to remember it. I felt the joy, I felt the power, and I was really happy for every person who saw that moment for the wink at the audience it was and still let it in.
'The Boys,' on the other hand? Meh. It feels a far more cynical exercise to me. Because I don't buy in. The truth? 'The Boys' is what alienates me.

Do not downplay the roll of beliefs and ideology.
For a time ISIS had its own magazine named Dabiq. It’s polish and and editing was on par with any Madison Avenue publication (at least it was until all the editors were killed). They published an article entitled “Why we hate you and why we fight you.” They list the reasons why with the first two being:
“We hate you, first and foremost, because you are disbelievers; you reject the oneness of Allah - whether you realize it or not - by making partners for Him in worship, you blaspheme against Him, claiming that He has a son, you fabricate lies against His prophets and messengers, and you indulge in all manner of devilish practices. It is for this reason that we were commanded to openly declare our hatred for you and our enmity towards you. “There has already been for you an excellent example in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, ‘Indeed, we are disassociated from you and from whatever you worship other than Allah. We have rejected you, and there has arisen, between us and you, enmity and hatred forever until you believe in Allah alone’” (Al-Mumtahanah 4). Furthermore, just as your disbelief is the primary reason we hate you, your disbelief is the primary reason we fight you, as we have been commanded to fight the disbelievers until they submit to the authority of Islam, either by becoming Muslims, or by paying jizyah - for those afforded this option - and living in humiliation under the rule of the Muslims. Thus, even if you were to stop fighting us, your best-case scenario in a state of war would be that we would suspend our attacks against you - if we deemed it necessary - in order to focus on the closer and more immediate threats, before eventually resuming our campaigns against you. Apart from the option of a temporary truce, this is the only likely scenario that would bring you fleeting respite from our attacks. So in the end, you cannot bring an indefinite halt to our war against you. At most, you could only delay it temporarily. “And fight them until there is no fitnah [paganism] and [until] the religion, all of it, is for Allah” (Al-Baqarah 193).
We hate you because your secular, liberal societies permit the very things that Allah has prohibited while banning many of the things He has permitted, a matter that doesn’t concern you because you separate between religion and state, thereby granting supreme authority to your whims and desires via the legislators you vote into power. In doing so, you desire to rob Allah of His right to be obeyed and you wish to usurp that right for yourselves. “Legislation is not but for Allah” (Yusuf 40). Your secular liberalism has led you to tolerate and even support “gay rights,” to allow alcohol, drugs, fornication, gambling, and usury to become widespread, and to encourage the people to mock those who denounce these filthy sins and vices. As such, we wage war against you to stop you from spreading your disbelief and debauchery - your secularism and nationalism, your perverted liberal values, your Christianity and atheism - and all the depravity and corruption they entail. You’ve made it your mission to “liberate” Muslim societies; we’ve made it our mission to fight off your influence and protect mankind from your misguided concepts and your deviant way of life.”
The author leaves the foreign policy of the U.S. and other western nations for the final bullet point. As if to make it any more insultingly clear the author goes on to follow up their listing with:
“What’s important to understand here is that although some might argue that your foreign policies are the extent of what drives our hatred, this particular reason for hating you is secondary, hence the reason we addressed it at the end of the above list. The fact is, even if you were to stop bombing us, imprisoning us, torturing us, vilifying us, and usurping our lands, we would continue to hate you because our primary reason for hating you will not cease to exist until you embrace Islam. Even if you were to pay jizyah and live under the authority of Islam in humiliation, we would continue to hate you. No doubt, we would stop fighting you then as we would stop fighting any disbelievers who enter into a covenant with us, but we would not stop hating you.”

“Virtue signaling” is just the modern name for something that’s been going on a very long time. I was born disabled, and when I was a little kid and would see another kid in a wheelchair on Sesame Street or wherever, it was always as part of a group of other kids, and they’d never focus on the wheelie kid or have them speak. Even at that young age, I remember thinking “Wait, why are they showing a kid in a wheelchair? They never show kids in wheelchairs. Oooh, they’re just trying to make themselves look good by acting like they care about wheelchair kids.”

The Persona series actually makes me think about this issue in a really interesting way. The metaverse in the world of Persona contains "shadows," in the very Jungian sense, which is the part of you that you don't acknowledge. That could be said to be the thing you are hiding by performing virtue. In this way, virtue is an action and not necessarily an essence. And the people who turn evil are the people who are, in a literal sense, refusing to acknowledge the parts of themselves they don't like because they're bad, dangerous, etc. That allows the shadows to control the real person.
But it's made explicitly clear that killing the shadow kills the person, so that's not the solution to becoming better. The heroes become powerful not by destroying their shadows, but by listening to them and making agreements with them. So the strongest people are those who can acknowledge the good and bad parts of themselves and not hide them from the world. I like that interpretation, I think it can be helpful in thinking about how to be a better person.
