Just did this on my daughter's 05 Beetle. You're right, the rusty lower bolts are the only issue. I replaced mine with new 10 mm bolts and nuts. Had to go to a hardware store to get those. None of the parts stores (Auto Zone, O'Reilly's) had any in stock. Make sure you've got WD40 and a brakeover bar handy.

Haha, that's it? I need to get mine done... It's loud as fuck and getting harder to drive... Bouncy back end... My brother abused this car...

I actually have the parts in the car, but putting it off due to floor jack. Random, but you think I could get it done without taking the wheel off or lifting the car?

What size is the top nut? 14mm?

The nut on the top of the shock should be a 16mm, but your vehicle may differ. I left it out under the assumption that having used the 16mm previously during disassembly it would be available given it is the same size. Though your vehicle may be different if it has been worked on before or could have any modifications added.
