    This is Part 1 of 2 videos I show you how to get started on cleaning your Cuckoo Clock. The basic needs to get your clock going again and more.
    Taking your Cuckoo Clock apart, step by step. Start with a cheap Cuckoo Clock so if you mess it up, at least you learned something from your experience and still you can fix what you might have messed up on.
    Now that I am retired, I just might show my life and some of the towns around me. I enjoy working on Cuckoo Clocks and clocks in general, How to repair vacuums, fans and things form the thrift stores, besides the thrift store finds, and working on houses. Time Lapse, Bird & Sky watching along with gardening. Helping my Dad with things he loved to do, along with taking dad and his wife to breakfast.
    My Brother and Dad, live on the same Dead End Road and yea, maybe we just might get into trouble a little, but have fun doing it. It is time to start smelling the Roses on the way instead of looking at them and passing them by.

    Hi Mike, my son just recently gifted me the exact same build of this clock, with the exact same outer carvings (3 birds), though some small differences in the outer doors and strike. Mine is also in pretty good condition, but needs a bit of attention. My son told me that he'd paid $50 Aussie for it, so it was great value. I'll restore this though my wife suggests that I keep it in our garage = really is a family joint venture :) Many thanks for this excellent tutorial vid. It is a great reference for me and the heir. I must mention that the biggest enemy of these clocks is weak wall mountings - gravity will win if the wall mounting can't take the weight. It will destroy a perfectly good clock.

    • @justmike57
      @justmike57  29 дней назад

      We have to remember to find a stud in the wall to hang your clock up. Besides the weight of some of these clocks, when winding the clock, it is like a mini jackhammer. Each time you hear the clicking as you wind your clock, it adds vibration through the clock and to the hanger. It's always a great day when you can find a clock for a good price and to learn from it and get it running again is a joy and a warm feeling in your heart. It is sad that most wife's rule over the décor of the house and the after the hunt clocks upset them with dead animals on the clock.

      Sorry to hear that and it is good you are going to oil your clock before it stops. Maybe get a can of Air and blow the movement out before you oil the clock. Check your bellows while you are in the clock for holes or the hinge area for loose paper. If you need to replace the bellow, I have two different videos on how to do that. 1 would be just replacing the bellow, 2 replacing the paper in the bellow with Tyvek. Good Luck.

      @@rtcfrtcdana If everything is working, just blowing the clock out will really help, but you will be oiling one side of the clock and both sides should be oiled because the gears go through too each plate. This is what most people do is only oil one side and the inside plate starts to drag and gum up. The book says to oil your movement every 3 years and you should be good to go. Do you want to risk the inside plate to gum up? Just take a deep breath, take notes or pictures of how you take the movement out so you can get it back together the same way. How about just using gunk or degreaser, then soak and rinse the movement and blow dry, then thoroughly lube all points and gear and arms where metal to metal contact is made? To take the movement totally apart is beyond the scope of most people, almost like taking a mechanical watch apart! My movement was very dusty but was able to clean with just air an Q-Tips and re-oil. Thanks for your help Mike, I was able to do it all with your help & my parents had the same clock back in the early 70's!!

    • @justmike57
      @justmike57  4 месяца назад

      You just have to remember, what ever you use has to be safe for brass as so it does not tarnish the metal. I have had some clocks come in with W-D-40 sprayed all over the movement. The movement after sitting until I got it helped clean the brass. Don't know how well the sprayed the pivots out, but still I ended up taking the movement apart to clean it right and remove any oils left behind so the dust would not be as tracked to the movement. They do make a spray for cleaning movements and another spray you are suppose to use to wash all the cleaner off. The total cost was around $25.00, not counting shipping.
      Like I always say, it's your clock, so do as you please, and if you mess it up, you can now try to fix that problem and learn from your mistakes. Clocks are always a learning experience.
      It sounds like you had success with your movement and now to see how long this last. Thanks so much for your story on cleaning the movement and thanks for watching and learning.

    • @justmike57
      @justmike57  2 года назад +1

      Good to hear it is running better than years ago. Depending on how you cleaned your movement, sometimes you still have to restart you clock every time you walk by it for a few days. Do make sure you listen for the even tic-tock sound and if you can keep it running without the pendulum, leave it off for a couple of windings to help the clock work out the possible old oils and dust that still might be there. Fresh oil thins what might be left. Also you might have to re-oil it in a couple weeks on both sides, depending how you cleaned your movement.

    • @justmike57
      @justmike57  2 года назад +3

      Most the music box clocks are just a lever that gets tripped. I have some old clocks that have a trip wire that is really hard to slightly bend the wire for the music to trip. I might have one out now, but maybe not really explain the stops on the wheels that keep the music from playing until the cuckoo is done. For the newer clocks, it's all about the levers outside the clock and how to adjust them. We will see if I get in another musical clock and make a video on that.

    • @justmike57
      @justmike57  Год назад +1

      Some of the clocks will get stuck, possibly because the clock might have had the minute hand turned counter clockwise. You can try moving the minute hand, 5 minutes past the hour, then slightly pull the winding chain and tug on the weight side quick after letting the winding side go. If this does not work, you might have to remove the movement and on the front you will see a snail looking gear that moves the hands. There will be a lever that is suppose to drop onto the snail that will count the hour. That lever might be stuck behind the snail. If it is stuck, just lift it up so the pointer can rest on the snail again.
      If you go to my channel and look for the "PLAYLISTS" you will find a list of the cuckoo clocks I have worked on. I normally show how to take the movement out of the clock and explain how the cuckoo knows how many times to cuckoo. These videos should help you out.

      It sounds like the timing might be off a bit, and or the spring to the bird rod is too loose. Also if you have a count wheel, like on older clocks have that are made before 1950, you would have to adjust the arm that triggers the cuckoo. Look to see if the spring wire is still on the rod or may need an updated spring to replace it.

    the pendulum swing? My right one works with the Cuckoo. Not sure what the left one does. Thanks.

    • @justmike57
      @justmike57  Год назад

      Did you just buy this clock somewhere or take it out of storage? The book says you should oil your movement every 5 to 7 years and blow out the dust. Also, if you clock stops working because of not oiling the movement, it would be best to take the movement apart all the way, clean and oil the movement to give it a fresh start.
      The old oil will start to gum up and the fresh oil will prevent the old oil from drying up to get gummy along with the dust it takes in. You could try a short term fix by using clock oil on the pivots, front and back. Pivots are where the gears come through the plates.
      You said you straighten the pendulum wire. Unless it fell off the wall, this might not be a good thing. Start the pendulum and listen for an even tick-tock sound. If the clock does not have an even sound, tilt the clock to the right and listen. If it gets worst, then tilt it to the left until the sound is right.
      There are times that you have to move the Leaf, Bob) up to get the clock to run faster when the clock hasn't been oiled. (Doing this is for when the clock starts to gum up inside and slow the clock down.

      On most of my cuckoo clock videos, I normally show how to get the chains back on the clock. In your case, You can wrap the chains that are still on the winding wheel so they don't fall off, turn you clock upside down and try to fish the chain back around the sprocket.
      As for the wires too the bellows. If both wires fell off, normally the back lift arm would go to the high note bellow... the one that lifts the birds tail. Just slip the wire into the bellow U-nail and then with the other end bent like an "L" shape, slip it through the arm hole then bend it back like it was.
      Watch my video on how I take the wire off but you are doing this in reverse. Normally if you plan on shipping or just putting the clock away in storage, you would secure the chains with a bread tie or pipe cleaner. Also the bellows need to be secure so they don't flop open. This will hold the wires in place and also the bellow will not flop open for a long time and get stuck in that open position.

      @@wildflowersnhoney209 Extra weight means the clock is in need of oil on the Front and back where the bushing are for the gears. This would be a good time to use can air to blow out the dust also. They say if your clock stops.... then it is time to take it all apart and clean all the parts from the old, gummy oil and dust. The fresh oil, loosens the gummy oil and keeps it from drying out. Not sure what you meant about a Cone.

      There is a chance that the bellow wires are on the wrong bellow. With your clock on the table and the back open, see how far the clock is trying to open the bellow. The MAX. you want them to open is 3/4's. If the Bellow opens all the way, the clock is normally in stress and can't finish it's job. Also watch your lift wires so they are not rubbing on each other or hitting the pendulum wire.

    Hi Mike
    My granddaughter has shown an interest in a clock. I am from UK have you any tips for what to look out for when looking for a cheap clock to start out with. There are many on EBay but I want a half decent one. Thanks.

    • @justmike57
      @justmike57  8 месяцев назад

      The number one thing is a 1 day clock that is cheap. This way it doesn't matter if you mess it up. And if you mess it up, you can try to fix that mess up as well.
      You decide what you really want. A clock without a topper needs to go cheaper than one with a topper. A smaller clock will also go for cheaper. I would also say to get a clock that has the weights with the clock.
      When looking for a deal, and I don't know how well that is for the UK, but watch the Goodwill auction site. I just typed in cuckoo clocks and copied the link. shopgoodwill.com/categories/listing?st=cuckoo%20clock&sg=&c=&s=&lp=0&hp=999999&sbn=&spo=false&snpo=false&socs=false&sd=false&sca=false&caed=11%2F2%2F2023&cadb=7&scs=false&sis=false&col=1&p=1&ps=40&desc=false&ss=0&UseBuyerPrefs=true&sus=false&cln=1&catIds=&pn=&wc=false&mci=false&hmt=false&layout=grid&ihp=true
      You might get better deals here on the Goodwill sight. Also, don't bid right away. Some people get caught up in the bidding war and will end up driving the price up and be on the price the clock is worth.

    Hi Mike - Great video. My cuckoo clock is a 7 day movement. Sometimes it will run for 5 days without an issue, but when I wind it, it will sometimes run only 5 minutes. Can't find a common factor as to why it runs great for a while and when it doesn't run well. I read a post below and your response about removing the pendulum and letting it run without the pendulum for a while. Do you think that may help get the movement going better in case there was some dust/gunk in the movement?

    • @justmike57
      @justmike57  3 месяца назад

      The book says to oil you clock every 5 to 7 years to keep the oil from drying out. Also use a can of air to blow out the dust. When you oil the clock, you have to oil both sides of the movement. The book also says if your clock stops running, it might be too late and the movement should be taken all the way apart and cleaned. It sounds like your clock is getting very close to cleaning it all the way.

      I know what you mean. Our phones are listening all the time and sometimes I think they have technology that can read our minds.
      The reason I say to choose a cheap, cuckoo only clock is so you understand how to time the clock. getting the cuckoo to start and stop and getting the sound of the gong and the cuckooing to start with the gong and stop with the last coo. It is easy enough, but your first clock will be a learning experience and If you mess the clock up, you have another chance to fix it because it is yours. Good luck and check my channel out in the playlist section and look under cuckoo clock repair for more helpful videos.

      Great to hear you got the chain on. Move the minute hand just past the 12 and pull the winding chain just enough to let the cuckoo gears wind backwards a bit, then pull the weight side and see if it will start cuckooing again. Sometimes the star wheel that makes the leavers work will get hung up and bind the cuckoo from working.
      Also if that don't work, you might have to take the movement out and check the front of the movement. Look at the lever that drops on the Snail looking plate that the hands attach to. The one that has all the teeth that the clock counts the hour and make sure it is dropping down for the clock to know how many times it is suppose to cuckoo for the hour.
