- This week's “Remake of a Classic” takes us back to May 1967 with The Hollies' hit, “Carrie Ann”. Released by Parlophone Records in the UK, and Epic Records in the U.S., it became an instant hit, reaching number three in the UK, and number nine in the U.S. and Canada. It also reached number four in Ireland.
Written by Allan Clarke, Graham Nash, and Tony Hicks, the tune was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in only two takes. It marked the first time steel drums were used in a commercial pop song; the use of which is odd since there's nothing really tropical about the tune at all. None of The Hollies played the instrument, and it's not clear who played it on the record. Still, inserting a steel drum solo where a guitar solo would normally go certainly makes the song stand out.
So, who is Carrie Ann? Actually, the tune is about British singer-actress Marianne Faithfull, whose most famous romance was with Mick Jagger, but who also dated Hollies singer-guitarist Allan Clarke for a short time. "Marianne" was changed to "Carrie-Anne" so it wouldn't be totally obvious. The group didn't let on that the song was about Faithfull until 1995, when Graham Nash spilled the beans in a documentary.
Eagle-eyed folks will notice that in the background there's a painting of Iron Maiden's mascot, EDDIE. I did this painting in 1982 for the release of the album, “Number of the Beast”. The band appeared in a local record store and I took the painting and had them sign it. It's signed by the entire band, including the late, great drummer, Clive Burr.
At the 1:39 mark, cool seeing you play the steel kettle drum on the keyboard. Great cover of the song.
This outrageous n I love it❤🌹🔥🔥🔥

I continued to be super-impressed Russ. The Hollies three part vocals are well covered by just you. Awesome.

I really enjoyed this!
very good
Thanks!
Just plain amazing, the way you hit those high notes and the great harmonies....loved it...awesome...! Like # 100...
Thanks so much...really glad you liked it!
Nice job! The Hollies are one of the hardest '60s groups to cover, because 1) Bobby Elliot's immaculate drumming, 2) Tony Hicks' layered guitar parts, and (mainly) 3) Graham Nash's high harmonies. So congratulations for pulling it off!
Thanks so much, Tim. I really appreciate it!
Hey Tim what about Allen Clarke?
@@jcheck6 Clarke's vocals were always great. My band does a couple of Hollies songs, so I was only pointing out some of the things that make them hard to reproduce. As Nash once said, (paraphrasing here): "No matter how high Clarke sang, I had to sing higher." But I love Allan's voice - even on songs that I still haven't figured out what he's singing!
Great stuff. Well done. Excellent production.
Many thanks...glad you like it!
Music from the summer of love! That was 1967 for you youngsters. Looks like the keyboardist caught the backup singer off guard lol. I really enjoy your videos and talent. Thanks Russ
I'm a "younger" (parents are baby boomers) so please tell me about the special Summer of 1967...I thank my parents time for knowing and loving 50s and 60s music 🎵
LOL. Thanks much, Andy...I really appreciate it!
Bobby Elliott says he wants to grow up and play like you! 😊
LOL......thanks!
Russ you would make Allen Clark and Graham Nash proud. Is Long Cool Woman next?
Thanks much!. Search through my videos...Long Cool Woman is already on there.
Awesome job Russ! The notes you post along with songs are so interesting. Marianne Faithful is so great. And cool story about the painting! Thanks again!
As always, many thanks, Chris!

Thank you kindly!
I so want to be in your band!
Many thanks for watching, and for the kind comments!
Man you’re really talented. Love your music and your take on all these songs, God Bless!!!
Thank you so much...I appreciate it!
Did Bruce Dickinson also sign the painting? Interestng about Bruce is that he is type rated in the Boeing 747 and personally flew the band when they toured. Before that he flew the B-757.
I painted that when Number of the Beast came out and Maiden came to Cincinnati. It's actually signed by all of them, including Clive Burr. After I shot this video I actually gave the painting to a great friend for his 50th birthday. He's a big maiden fan, has cancer, and I wanted to give him something special for his milestone birthday.
Very nicely done Russ! Not an easy one although you make it look so……Thank you. Your talent and take are appreciated to this newcomer to your videos! 👍🏻
You are very welcome...thanks so much for all the kind words!

PERFECT!
Many thanks for listening!
Hey Russ,
I was fooling with this song a little and got to the crazy steel drum solo. I was surprised that I'm having a hard time finding the synth for it.
Are you doing that thru your DAW?
Hi Stan. The steel drum sound is actually in my Yamaha keyboard...it's a factory setting.

Absolutely! He has the best covers on RUclips!!
Thank you so much!
Aw, thanks Chris!
Tall order, but you filled it … extremely high for a male voice staying out of falsetto and keeping in your head/chest voice ..anyone tasking themselves with doing a Hollies cover better have their homework done, and you get an A.
Thanks so much...it was a ball buster, for sure!
