- When it comes to decorating for Christmas at their cottage in Gloucestershire, Duncan Campbell and Luke Edward Hall favour a more-is-more approach, adding further layers of colour and visual interest to their jewel box of a cottage. We went to visit them to see the duo (and their whippet Merlin) in action, decorating the tree, setting the table, and getting ready for some festive merriment.

This is why I can't be a total minimalist...colorful items and seeing other's collections make me so happy.
And, it makes me nervous and anxious!!!

Put a duvet/comforter under the tree while decorating and putting it down. Precious glass ornaments fall to the softened ground and don't break :)
The room the tree is in looks like it has carpet, or at least rugs, so I'm guessing breakages aren't necessarily from things being dropped on the floor. I have some tree decorations that are 50+ years old (old family stuff), and the glass is so old, thin and fragile that some years one or two literally just shatter in my hands as I'm taking them out of their packaging.

Actually your idea is brilliant. I would cover it with some sort of plastic and throw a fabulous tree skirt over it. I’ve lost too many old ornaments falling off and smoke aching on the floor.

I read Luke's column in the Financial Times first thing every weekend. I love their more-is-more approach - it suits them perfectly - even though it's not quite my style. They have great eyes.

Thank goodness for closed captions. I couldn't understand a word they said, but I love their house.
They do have eclectic taste and good eyes to spot fantastic items. Not everything is matchy match but it is a treasure hunt everywhere admiring whimsical or well design buts and bobs.

I was not prepared to love this so much. Sometimes this design approach ends up being oppressive, this is the norm, because it is over the top. What I admire here is that everything they do is light and fun.

How utterly delightful this home is… Like a jewelry box popped open and spilled out its contents all over the kitchen table! However, the filming is so quick and choppy that one’s eyes don’t have a chance to linger on all the goodness.

My parents are from what was known as the Gallic regions between Austria and the very tip of north east Italy. Yes, the celts occupied this region and then made their way to France. They still practice some traditions like il Fogolar (bonfires) during winter solstice. I was in Venice visiting, along the po valley regions, and elsewhere, many times as a child. I’ve seen so many artisan’s and such beautiful things over there. My cousin had a custom chandelier made in the shape of an octopus in his condo. I had some beautiful jewelry pieces which unfortunately got lost, due to the fact my mom not monitoring what I was doing with my stuff at the time. I’m still upset about that. I had a stunning necklace with beautiful multicolored, iridescent, faceted leaves, which I wore around my neck at the beach in Lignano Sabbiadoro, and was stopped so many times about it. Maybe I should reproduce one😀. Anyways, your tree is so whimsical. Absolutely adorable. Enjoy your holidays everyone.

I love them and their house and their dog and their drinking champagne out of proper coupes. But I have to be so American and say: where do people get money for a country house?? H&G needs a note: Trust Fund, Family Money, Alimony from a Russian mobster ex, etc. etc so I don't wonder why I don't have a country house.

They are from wealthy families. The wealth gap and glass ceiling in Britain are pretty high. Nobody needs a country house :) no need to feel inadequate. I will never have one, but I'm happy that I have food on the table and a roof over my head and that I can enjoy wealthy people's interior content on Insta 😅

@@nadjak3410it’s very much a cottage as opposed to a full scale country house I’m pretty sure! Country houses are huge in comparisons. Also I remember reading that they rent it, not own :)
