This is what my dream apartment would be like. Not too large, in a historic building with lots of character, full of mementoes reminding me of my time on earth. I'm a sucker for nostalgia. I'm happy for people who like minimalism but it really isn't my cup of tea. I like to surround myself with joyful chaos that inspires me.
I suggest you look up “Hamish Bowles - Vintage Bowles” if you haven’t already, he did a series on RUclips for vogue 10 years ago where he would go to thrift stores in Europe and talk about his findings. Its so sad it got axed.
I don't think I knew Hamish until I watched the live metGala coverage this year. Now I'm obsessed. He's so well spoken and has such interesting, intelligent things to say.
I find these homes filed with mementos and culture, so infused with the owners personality so much more beautifull and welcoming than the modern homes that are empty and white and beige, no books on the shelves just "aesthetic" decor and those dumb beads
The beads lol. Let's just say someone pointed out to me that they looked like another kind of more personal beads, and I can't look at them without laughing.
When he laughs, I laugh. When he smiles, I smile. Lol, he is so adorable and unique. He's such refreshing to the eyes. Hope, Vogue you will keep on covering stories and lives like Mr. Hamish Bowles.
11:22 this gave me goosebumps! Can I listen to this man talk for hours and hours on end? I enjoyed him so much in this video. Such a beautiful, colourful and soulful person. Stunning! ❤
That was fun to watch. When I was a kid growing up in NYC, it was packed with men like Hamish. Men with exquisite taste, who were quirky and intelligent and refined because they educated themselves in the arts. We have lost so much in our connection to why aesthetic works and how one celebrates their own joys it makes me sad. I do not think we will ever comprehend what both AIDS and Vapid Celebrity has cost us as a culture
That moment with the portrait of Capote and the story of the nail was Everything!!! And I adore the decaying splendor of the apartment. Which is a nice way of saying, You're hoarding some awesome stuff❣❣❣
He’s adorable and humble men with a unique sense of style that we rarely see these days. Hate those stupid boring minimalist or modern deco theme. This place has a character and feels warm and welcoming
I have fallen utterly and completely in love with this man. The way he talks with so much wisdom and reverence about the people he admires, the things he's experienced. How his hands seem to want to caress everything he shows off (and often do!). I love homes where every item is waiting for its story to be told, and god does he have some stories for his things!
Yessssss I LOVE homes overflowing with personality. Curated bits and bobs, books, textures, lighting, layers. The "chaos" is much more warmth, and nooks to get lost into. Absolutely beautiful.
I've always been curious about him...he was always a quiet presence through my fashion journey ..through magazines ...fashion weeks..its good to see this side of him...he's adorable.. always knew he was eccentric...but his anecdotes give dimension ...a dying breed
this little darling is so eloquent, and flamboyant. truly a treasure. bless your sweet heart. i find it comforting that when i hear an english accent, i don’t even consider their accent; since it’s so natural to me and all i hear.
Sensory deprivation tank - spot on! I love stories like these - of real people with character who make their living space their own, instead of the nouveau riche (athletes, youtubers, Tiktokers, you name it) and their ridiculous mansions.
That is insane, the story of the framed drawing of Capote .... the apt with the lamp ... and nail on the wall. I love stories like this... proving that life IS stranger than fiction. Wonderful.
I was moved to tears by the story of Truman's portrait's return to its nail in Dunphy's apartment. Thank you so much for sharing your marvelous collections and your passion for those who have inspired you.
This is my favourite episode ever. I love the passion and joy he has when talking about his belongings. He also comes across as refreshingly down to earth, like showing himself authentically without hiding the messiness. I love it!
What an incredible tale of the Capote portrait finding its way back 'round to its former haunts...my goodness how wonderful. May Mr. Bowles' new London digs bring him many more years of maximalist joy.
Not only Hamish is true gentleman and a dandy he also was the one whose passion and intelligence truly shined through every single word he ever wrote for the publication. In Wintour-era Vogue there were only two people who were writing magnificent pieces so brilliantly and knowingly - and it’s Hamish (on fashion/history/design) and Jonathan Van Meter (with his excellence in profiling famous people)
I enjoyed this so much with a cup of coffee. Glad he was open to share his place before he leaves. He is so inteligent and gentle. So fascinating how he knows so much about fashion and other things.
I love Hamish, we truly have exactly the same sensibilities when it comes to collecting. The value of an object is found in the story and the journey you took for it to then become part of your history. His apartment is warm, inviting and genuinely interesting just like him.
Omg this was amazing! I would love to see more homes like this - people with stories and meaningful possessions rather than just bland homes (coughlikeKimKardashiancough). It would be fantastic to see more Vogue staff in this type of video!
Fabulous and so unpretentious. His love of Capote and Beaton is so heartfelt and his life stories so captivating, I could listen to them all day. His style is exquisite. He is everything that is good about fashion and style.
I have read Hamish Bowles articles in Vogue for years. This video is a wonderful snapshot into learning more about him. The story about Truman Capote picture is incredible.
Good luck Hamish on your new chapter! NYC will surely miss you! I hope we get to see your new place filled with these treasures. You sure have inspired me with stories in Vogue through the years. Looking forward to photographing your true gentleman style in all the Fashion weeks again soon!
He is so cool! Immaculate vibes and I’m the type he mentioned in the beginning who likes when there are as few things as possible but his place looks super cozy. Maybe I should get some little bits and bobs to add some joy. What a lovely interview!
My mama said if you can't have children you should surround yourself with beautiful things. SOOOO TRUE. Marie Antoinette's taste ooh LA LA! OH TRUMAN CAPOTE a literary legend loved the boy. Thank-u Hamish ❤
Love, love, love Hamish’s abode….must be like being in a very stimulating illustrated book of short stories when you’re in it….with all those chic objets ….must be nostalgic……I also love the music score especially the piano ❤️❤️❤️
As soon as I saw the portrait of Truman Capote in the opening scan of the apartment, I knew who it was. The portait is a play off the famous photograph that graces his debut novel 'Other Voices, Other Rooms.' And of course, I love the story that is told. Especially as it pivots around the narrative pun...of Truman Capote...getting 'nailed'...not once but twice...in that apartment.
Howling. The Curtain Exchange and Marie Antoinette in one sentence. Oh, this has made my night. Bravo Hamish, on a wondrous apartment and some absolutely (for all the various, fabulous reasons) exquisite treasures...
Love this gorgeous, treasure filled space!! But I enjoyed Hamish’s stories even more! My favorite was the the history of the Truman Capote portrait. How incredible!
WHAT A DREAM APARTMENT! I am obsessed with all of the details and how each item has meaning to them. I want to try to re-create this in the future, since I love nostalgic items and being surrounded by art!
I could listen to him talk all day...fascinating human, I wish him the best of luck in his new endeavors and look forward to seeing the interiors he spotlights...Bravo.
What a delightful person with such an intriguing life. The Capote portrait story alone-amazing! The thought of packing up and moving all that gives me hives. I subscribed to the World of Interiors for awhile. Each edition is like an enormous buffet of delicacies and exotic dishes…overwhelmingly rich and delicious!
its so refreshing to see apartments like his so rich and full of details much in the style of Anna Sui who also disregards the already so common and boring open space concept. these people make their living spaces magical warm nests. :)
I could have listened to him forever! What a kind and fascinating soul. Hands down “the” most interesting video in the series. Thank you for sharing! More please.
Love the fake door-hinge, feels very Scooby-Doo where its filled with secret tunnels and passageways. You can see how creative he is, I would love to live in a space like this.
Such a trip down memory lane. I met Cecil Beaton outside the V and A years ago after his lecture on fashion photographes. Plus I have my mother's autograph books with, Gladys Cathrops, Noel Coward and Elisabeth Welch's autographs. I Loved this apartment, so much to see, so many stories.
I love the colors and objects, such a warm and welcoming space. I agree- purple is underrated. So charming to have a tour of a wonderful space, thank you.
I just wanna say this dude could be Wes Anderson’s next main character.
I'm pretty sure wes Anderson apartment look similar.
He’s been programmed by Wes ...
Nah you clearly don't know wes Anderson very well I'd you think that

I can listen to Hamish all day, all night. Love it when he's talking about history and fashion. Such a genius. Protect him at all cost!!!!
Yes!!

I agree.
I just adore Hamish; so glad he shared his gorgeous space before leaving NYC. The Vogue in the 1990s podcast hosted by him is exceptional.
I will have to check that podcast out- thank you
@@dotink highly recommend! And it's officially called "In Vogue: The 1990s"
@@hellobecky84 I'll search for it too

Lol idk why the dumb beads part is cracking me up! I completely agree 😃
Totally agree! Hate modern minimalism soooooooo much!
Right 😘😘 @Rita

The story of the Capote painting is just remarkable !
Right! That is insane
“Sensory deprivation tank…” hahahahaha, what a great description to the sea of white and beige that’s so popular.
He’s adorable and humble men with a unique sense of style that we rarely see these days. Hate those stupid boring minimalist or modern deco theme. This place has a character and feels warm and welcoming

I need more of Hamish! I can listen to him describe outfits, homes, architecture, ballets and storytelling on a weekly basis!

Love everything. Would. Love to just have dinner with him and listen to more stories ❤️
Omg saaaame!!

What a pleasure to listen to someone speak clearly and coherently! I miss articulate people.
Sensory deprivation tank - spot on! I love stories like these - of real people with character who make their living space their own, instead of the nouveau riche (athletes, youtubers, Tiktokers, you name it) and their ridiculous mansions.
How wonderful this purple living/loving guy is. Thank you
I could take such a good nap in this room. I love it, it’s so comforting, the colors, the objects, the lighting, LOVE
That is insane, the story of the framed drawing of Capote .... the apt with the lamp ... and nail on the wall. I love stories like this... proving that life IS stranger than fiction. Wonderful.
Hamish is a pure joy. I could listen to him all day. This world needs more Hamish Bowles---love the apartment by the way!!!
I was moved to tears by the story of Truman's portrait's return to its nail in Dunphy's apartment. Thank you so much for sharing your marvelous collections and your passion for those who have inspired you.

What a treat! I could listen to Hamish talk about anything !! A true icon of culture
I love Bowles's sense of humor and self deprecation. He clearly loves what he does and his enthusiasm is contagious. Such a pleasure to watch.
I love Hamish, we truly have exactly the same sensibilities when it comes to collecting. The value of an object is found in the story and the journey you took for it to then become part of your history. His apartment is warm, inviting and genuinely interesting just like him.
He’s sooooo cute I love that he wanted something playful. Civilized playful is SUCH a setting! I totally get it.

What a lovely and fascinating man. I love his "Objects of Affection". And, he has a beautifully soothing voice.
I have read Hamish Bowles articles in Vogue for years. This video is a wonderful snapshot into learning more about him. The story about Truman Capote picture is incredible.
Hamish is the most wonderful treasure in his apartment of wonderful objects. ❤️ Also, that story about the drawing- incredible!
Amen.
What a fabulous fantastical story about how the Truman Capote drawing made it back to the very same nail. It was fate!

That Jack Dunphy story is mind-blowing!! I love that!!!

He is so cool! Immaculate vibes and I’m the type he mentioned in the beginning who likes when there are as few things as possible but his place looks super cozy. Maybe I should get some little bits and bobs to add some joy. What a lovely interview!
For every 20 videos of beige boutique hotel homes I feel compelled to rewatch this one more time !

He has impeccable taste, you can just tell
what a delightful man. Such elegance in dressing, too. Can't get enough of his outfit.
He is wonderful, and his apartment is fascinating. I love his slightly bashful enthusiasm for collecting.
I just love homes like this where everything is unique and has a story and there’s color and pattern everywhere!
Well that was pleasant. Let's hope his flair for decency is highly contagious...
Yes, Hamish, Hamish all the time. Such a learned and substantive artist enjoying his objects of affection. Each has a story.
I love him. He's one of the truly cool editors.
Wonderfully New York. Never a dull moment in that ornate and abundant flat.
What a beautiful man with all his precious momentos, how I would love to meet him and hear more of his stories. x
Love, love, love Hamish’s abode….must be like being in a very stimulating illustrated book of short stories when you’re in it….with all those chic objets ….must be nostalgic……I also love the music score especially the piano ❤️❤️❤️
This apartment is exactly what I dream about since I was 8, a lot of stuff but with so many good books and art collections.
This is my first experience of Mr. Bowles. I think I'm in love with him and his style.

I like his suit. Very Willy Wonka esque.
Howling. The Curtain Exchange and Marie Antoinette in one sentence. Oh, this has made my night. Bravo Hamish, on a wondrous apartment and some absolutely (for all the various, fabulous reasons) exquisite treasures...
In the first 10 seconds... I knew I adored him!

This man looks like a book character!💖

WHAT A DREAM APARTMENT! I am obsessed with all of the details and how each item has meaning to them. I want to try to re-create this in the future, since I love nostalgic items and being surrounded by art!
Rich and luxurious and hectic and too busy. An assault on - and treat to - the senses. It’s perfect.
What a wealth of histories, culture and stories! Please let's bring back this level of sophistication and grace, Vogue!
I could listen to him talk all day...fascinating human, I wish him the best of luck in his new endeavors and look forward to seeing the interiors he spotlights...Bravo.

i dont know how but this interview makes me want to fall in love with his personality. so marvelous
This could be a series! Wonderful and leaves me wanting much more!
You mean a series on Hamish?
I would love to hear more about his collection as well. 😊👍💓
Finally - an exterior shot of the building. This should be a feature of every episode that showcases a townhome, condo or apartment.
What an amasing person! He is so clever! He remember the name of all the person that did something artistic in his flat at New York City!
its like a mini museum. pure artistry
Would love a part 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That tour was beyond hilarious and informative. I have absolutely no words to describe how much I enjoyed it!!!
Hamish Bowles is one of my new favorite things
its so refreshing to see apartments like his so rich and full of details much in the style of Anna Sui who also disregards the already so common and boring open space concept. these people make their living spaces magical warm nests. :)

My *OCD* can't handle this. But my heart and artist mind love this apartment 😍
I’m with you ✊
Love this.. It’s like I’m watching a Wes Anderson documentary on Hamish Bowles.
That was a marvelous trip down memory lane. A house full of life just like its host. Wonderful !
I love this guy and his apartment! He is so affectionate and honest, wonderful! 💗💙
Such a trip down memory lane. I met Cecil Beaton outside the V and A years ago after his lecture on fashion photographes. Plus I have my mother's autograph books with, Gladys Cathrops, Noel Coward and Elisabeth Welch's autographs. I

This is MAGICAL
I love the colors and objects, such a warm and welcoming space. I agree- purple is underrated. So charming to have a tour of a wonderful space, thank you.
If he was editor of American Vogue, I never would have let my subscription lapse. Love you Hamish!
Omg! Was just looking at photos of Malcolm Forbes 70th in Morocco. There was Hamish reclining on big Turkish pillows 🌞
What a glorious person Hamish is....
