  • Mormon Stories Podcast guest, Lauren Rogers, sits down with John Dehlin and Carah Burrell to discuss her difficult LDS mission experience, and how the strict lifestyle of her mission led her to develop a serious illness called Myalgic Encephalomyelitis or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - a long-term illness that has since rendered her legally disabled.

It took me 11 years to get a diagnosis of ME. I’ve been living with it for 40 years now.

I was Promised if I "just joined the Church and got Baptized, Heavenly Father's Blessings would Rain Down and all my legal troubles with my Litigation Dispute Would 'Miraculously' be 'Resolved'" . Exactly the Opposite happened.

Don't forget the story of Job. His entire fortune and all his family were killed after he served God his best. Then Satan came and told him to deny God for abandoning him. Job refused to charge God foolishly. Because he passed the test God blessed him 7 times more. Joseph in Egypt was falsely accused and thrown into prison. After the trial of his faith the blessings came. The point is to be blessed by God don't blame God or man but endure to the end. After your trials then come the blessings. This anti Mormon video aims you toward blame and reasons for holding resentments for ones trials.

The Mormon church is a master of manipulation of natural human needs, both physical and mental.

When I first got into my mission in Guatemala I lost a ton of weight. I was a star athlete in highschool and just shy of 6 feet tall. and I dropped down to 127lbs. Either the food was so bad that I could not eat it, or the food would make me sick. I stayed at that weight for the entire rest of my mission. Other elders used to joke then when I walked it looked like my pant legs were just flapping in the breeze because my legs were so thin. My mission president never once ever asked if I was getting enough food.

When my sister (still a mormon) first became a mormon, she was told she had MS and would be in a wheelchair within 5 to 10 years. She is still NOT in a wheelchair. This was 30 years ago. Men in the organization (I don't believe this is a church) don't have the ability to "bless" anyone.

Not true, my daughter had a head on collision with another biker and had a huge brain tumor where she was life flighted to IF for immediate brain servery after her hospital ex ray showed a bleeding tumer. She was given a priesthood blessing and the second exray showed the tumor was totally gone as if it had never been. The doctors said it was impossible and sent her home.My daughters l massive head ache was also gone and never returned. Remember Job where he was tested with terrible sickness and loss of everything. Satan tempted him to blame God and his church. Job replied, I will not charge God foolishly. Because he resisted blaming God or man he was blessed 7 fold greater than before. The worst thing you can do is go on an anti Mormon program and complain about any trial. Especially a program designed to gather negative stories destroy people's faith.

This is outrageous. It seems that the Mormon church spends much of its time, resources, and intellectual capital in seeking new and creative ways to sanctimoniously control, manipulate, and abuse its members. That it does so to its own volunteer missionaries is positively demonic. I’m so sorry you’ve suffered with this. I live with the same debilitating diagnosis, which tough living conditions and health issues on my South American mission helped trigger. Of course, multiple priesthood blessings were utterly useless.

I just got confirmation this week that the church has accepted my resignation. I thought that I would feel some kind of way about it, all I feel is BYE! That it's time to move on. IMO if you belong to an organization that does things that deeply go against your belief system, you should leave. By padding their membership numbers, I felt complicit. I spent 50 years of my life being a Mormon. No regrets, whatsoever, about leaving.

I broke my collar bone on my mission and the church refused to help me get it fixed AND I was still was expected to ride my bike around our area. I was in so much pain all day for weeks on end. Now my bone has not heeled properly and I have a weak upper body. That is a life long sacrifice of my body to the church. Thanks!

Jesus, in the Marine Corps, even in Iraq we had 3 meals a day. The only exception was one month where we were eating only 1 MRE a day, but command was freaking out about that and figured a way to get us more food. It was a priority.

I would honestly love to be on this show at some point and talk about my mission, and how my mission president forced me to baptize a p*dophile, and how we almost starved to death bc the church wouldn't give us any money to buy food. I almost got sent home from my mission because I didn't want to baptize a p*dophile. Numbers numbers numbers
Edit: I could also talk about how my second MP vented to me and some other zone leaders about how the Apostles would call him up on the phone and scream at him because his numbers were dropping compared to the pres who forced me to baptize a p*dophile
Edit #2: My first pres also forcibly took away our passports so that no one could go home, all bc he wanted to make a good impression on the apostles so that he could become an authority member someday. A handful of people almost died because he wouldn't let them go back to America and get medical treatment

I was discriminated against on my mission by white privileged kids that had never been outside of their Mormon Utah bubble (other than cruises) Besides that, my presidents prescribed me marriage even though I told them I am gay. Glad I never followed their “inspired” advice.

While that may be partially true, it exacerbated it to the point that it became full blown. If she would have rested and had proper nutrition it likely would have never reached that degree of severity.

In the Bible the apostles tried to heal a man and the man was not healed. Jesus told them that this kind of cometh not out except by fasting and prayer. Then, is it not true that many are healed and some or not. Why? Perhaps if faith isn't tested then it doesn't have full value. Sometimes we just don't know. My daughter was instantly healed by the priesthood of a dangerous brain tumor after a bike accident. The doctor was amazed beyond belief. Others I know are not healed and died. Only God knows. Sometimes leaders are not in tune and take upon themselves to their own will rather than God's. If it doesn't happen maybe healing is on God's schedule, not ours. Regardless, I would never take my personal trials on an anti Mormon program to feed into the negative narrative of anti faith.
