As an addict in recovery, I can relate to these people. It was me for a long time. It's very easy to judge these people who are either using drugs, alcohol or mentally disturbed . But we need to look at the root causes their childhoods and the systems that failed them. These people were bright eyed children at one point, and had dreams of becoming a doctors, policeman or athlete. The systems like DCF , education, Mental health services, Foster care failed these children and now they pay the price. So many children are abused , suffer unspeakable traumas and end up on the streets. Next time you see someone living rough, instead of looking away like they are invisible, buy them a sandwich or start a polite conversation. Your kindness can be an awakening for change.
Sad how America turns its back on those in need using their use of drugs and alcohol and they get what they deserve. Used and abused by the system and 5013c not for profits that bring in billions of dollars for those in need and those in need lucky to get a fifty dollar Walmart gift card. While the non profits and public authorities cruising around in Cadillacs living the life of fine wine and dining shop till you drop, going to hell in a hand basket blow a thousand dollars in a heart beat but not a dollar for those in need. Prisons and institutions big big business. Some of my friends survived their addictions some didn't. Child abuse, physical or mental it is well known the top reason for so called mental illness that's justified sadness for what they have been through fed all the drugs you could possibly want but good luck with food water shelter clothing and basic needs. Be a cold day in Hades before the government and non profits from the federal to local provide that. Shameful 81% of Americans in Gallup Poll say they believe in God and turn the other cheek to those suffering. I've lived here for 22 years, on the Gulf of Mexico. I'm from Philadelphia and I will tell you that I found a home here, that I never knew anywhere else. Life is slower. The sun goes down over the water, the birds, the colors, the plant life… Old Florida has its charm like nowhere else in the United States.
I found this quite moving. It's so easy to dismiss these people as rejects but they're very human. They were all someone's baby son at some point. There's probably a lot of trauma in their pasts but they keep fighting and keep going.
That's true. I grew up in Florida. Everyone obviously isn't like this. But a lot of us grew up in literal poverty. Some aren't strong enough to make it out. When you talk to them you can see the pain in their soul. Reminds me of some song lyrics "Pour out half a brew Cause it was a dead end For a whole lot of other dudes"
Sadly they are going extinct. Lived in Keys 40+. Lot of guys like these characters but they were GOOD at something whether fishing, painting houses, roofing etc. Now rent is so high those same men couldn't afford now. Now on boats it's 20+ yr olds with fancy boots, Eyewear & gear. But don't know shit or pay dues. The old Florida is fading fast.
The dude means he is dependent on alcohol, but not going to get blackout drunk and cause problems for the people around him (any more than a sober person). AKA, a functioning alcoholic.
As an Englishman currently living in, and watching from Sarasota Florida, I can say these gentlemen are EVERYWHERE down here. Generally very friendly and open to conversation. Hell I suppose I’m an honorary Florida Man myself at this point !!! Thanks for the doc 🙏
I live in Sarasota as well and I don’t know what part of town you’re hanging out in, but im over in lakewood ranch and I dont see anyone like this ever lmao.. It doesn’t matter what city or state you are in, it’s not hard to find beach bums or just your average every day bum at the nearest dive bar.
I can never see myself leaving Florida. Moved her in 94 and I love it here. It’s incredibly unique and my experience though weird, are not violent or dangerous. I’ve lived in Miami, Tampa, Tallahassee and Jacksonville. I’ve never felt in danger or afraid.
I love the southern laid back vibe of Florida, the real Floridians. I always wanted to live there. 🏝️🏖️🐊🍊 My parents had a vacation spot for 20 years, my father sold it when my mother passed. ☹️
That young dude with the tats... talking about working and doing everything he can for his family. He seemed to realize mid sentence that he was actually doing nothing at all to take care of his children.
I love when you linger with the camera longer than the subjects are comfortable with. It really brings something human out in them. Reminds me of Werner Herzog.
That's the moment I want to collect, then go back in time and show their child selves, like "hey kid, look, this'll be you some day..." see if that horrifies them so deeply that it snaps them out of it...
I started out feeling sad for them, and ended up feeling sad for all of us. This system we live in, grinds us up and spits out the bones. Florida, Arizona, Illinois, Maine .. its all the same story. Only the weather changes.

There was something very tranquil about that scene. Despite the absurdity of the whole situation. Two people, finding some respite, in two very distinct ways.
Nothing more in this world I want more than to be 65, retired in Florida, with no shirt on, jorts, my new balances on, cold beer in one hand and watching the sunset with the ol’ lady. “Look at that shit!” Lmao love that guy

@meow purr No, some probably have warrants for child support, but they are just being bums to avoid it. If there is one thing the government does well is collect child support. These guys ride bikes because they lost their drivers license because of unpaid child support, or DUI.

@Xxuzumaki07 _ I disagree. They get drunk and unpredictably stupid and it's not fun to be around unless it's a close friend. Random drunk strangers here where I live in Arkansas could be friendly, pissy or trying to fight you, sometimes all within a few minutes. I just don't like being around drunk super southerners lol I think they act stupid. @Rawnn dont forget the the crackheads
@erik iverson Everday someone like these ppl wake up, theyre fighting.
Truth, Neil. These folks can’t be blamed and condemned into improvement. The Love and understanding you’re expressing is the only solution
Or they are just lazy junkies
@@timgreen2426 that is also another perspective.
That's true. I grew up in Florida. Everyone obviously isn't like this. But a lot of us grew up in literal poverty. Some aren't strong enough to make it out. When you talk to them you can see the pain in their soul. Reminds me of some song lyrics
"Pour out half a brew
Cause it was a dead end
For a whole lot of other dudes"
Florida native here. This film could have been made back in the 1980’s when I was a kid. Beach bums are a part of Florida life.
True theres def not alot of beach bums in Florida anywhere. Or atleast I rarely encounter any and I go everywhere in this great state.
"I'm not a drunk, but I'm an alcoholic." That quote sums up this whole video
It's the difference of skilled, vs professional

The dude means he is dependent on alcohol, but not going to get blackout drunk and cause problems for the people around him (any more than a sober person). AKA, a functioning alcoholic.

Obviously theres people that handle their alcohol and are fun to be around but for the random drunks/people like the first guy, not so much.
