Bart Star was my childhood idol and was not only a great QB but an outstanding person. He is under rated and always has been...Think about this, with all of the rules favoring the offense these days, especially QBs and all of the passing schemes which virtually guarantee any good QB wil have a high completion percentage, large amounts of passing yards and probably at least 2 passing TDs every game, Bart Starr still holds the NFL record for highest Postseason Passer Rating of all time, and he went 9-1 in the postseason, as the Packers lost in their first championship game in the Lombardi era, but never lost again. He led his team to 5 World Championships in 7 years including 3 straight in 65, 66, and 67 and was MVP of the first 2 Super Bowls. He was clutch.
Very good piece. You have done an excellent job of documenting why Bart Starr is the greatest Packer quarterback ever. Bart was the greatest big game quarterback there has ever been. Greatness is measured by how you perform under pressure and no one was better than Bart. The last drive of the Ice Bowl exemplified what Bart was all about. Unlike Favre who has thrown interceptions when its matter most, Bart could be counted on. I've had the pleasure to know Bart Starr and he is nothing but class.
Starr was my childhood hero but my all time favorite player Is Brett Favre. What a joy to watch. He made throws, and plays no one could. He was the toughest QB in history, had the most fun and was a winner. Held every significant passing record when he retired...and as he says " good and bad" lol. People knock him for the INTs but his interception percentage was actually below average and when compared to the amount of TDs he threw, actually low. He knew he could make every throw on the field so he went for it! A true gunslinger with tremendous confidence. He wasn't the smartest QB, but his will to win and his belief in his ability, and that golden, rocket arm, are intangibles which can't be measured. I have been a Packer fan my entire life and the only time I ever pulled against them was when they went against Favre in Minnesota those 2 games his first season there. I love Brett Favre.
If I wanted to watch a player for the sheer joy of seeing someone with amazing talent give his all, I would pick Favre. If I wanted to watch a quarterback cut up a tough defense and win an important game, I would pick Starr.
It's difficult to compare stats from one era to another when the current rules are so conducive to the passing game. In Starr's era there were a lot more things the DB's could do to disrupt patterns and the passing game. However there is one stat that's always good: 5 championships to 1.

Bart Starr played in an era where QBs weren't as protected as they are now and receivers didn't get the same kind of interference calls they do now. Also he called all his own plays and was one of the few who could stand up to Lombardi.
I TOTALLY agree with this list, from 1-5. Good to see Majik and Dickey again! Favre was great, but Starr was CLUTCH. A great and modest leader among great players. Favre absolutely choked in the post-season from 2002-2007. But he was money in the late 90s.
Excellent analysis. There is a lot more to being a great QB than statistics. Bart Starr was the greatest leader I ever saw. He was clutch and never made the bone head plays that Favre made. He is also a "class" individual which is a lot more than can be said about Favre.
Finally, someone did their homework and recognized Tobin Rote. He is the only QB to win league championships in the NFL (Lions 57), AFL (Chargers 63) and the CFL (Argonauts multiple times). He was as tough as Favre and had to be on the mediocre teams he lead. As a kid going to high school near old City Stadium he was gracious to us when we asked for his autograph and would throw passes to us on occasion. A class act all the way.
I really like your insight on this, and to be honest, I can concede to your #1 spot going to Bart Starr because of his Post-Season stats in which his QBR and Int % is still an NFL record even today. If I did choose though, it would be #4 at #1 simply because he was a more dominant player then Starr but with less overall talent. His prime during his 3 MvP tenure is one of the greatest runs I've ever seen. Regardless I like your post, however obviously #12 now belongs on this list at #3.
There was no doubt who would be number one. But in 2018, who would get bumped off? Majik or Dickey? Anyway, I remember as a kid, nine to ten years old, going to the library and reading books about all the football teams and the 60's Packers dynasty, led by Bart Starr, always stood out. Nothing flashy but he had a cool name and he seemed like a guy you would follow to hell and back. I hated when the Packers trotted him out for the Favre ceremony; it was sad seeing him that way. But we will always have the footage of him being great.
Majik was a big story hrer, because he was from nearby DePew New York. As a Bucs Fan, I always had respect for Dickey, and happy to see him on this list. FYI, Dickey's bckup was David Whitehurst, father of current Seahawks QB Charlie Whitehurst
Aaron should hav been on that list... after only starting for a year? Dude did his homework and made some interesting observations. Although I would have rather seen Heber on there instead of the Majik Man. Jon, do you have any more clips highlights of Tobin Rote?
@ilovejourney1 Kramer was great, don't get me wrong, but Starr has so much charisma. Every time they announce Packer alums at games, he gets the loudest and longest applause.
Aaron Rodgers won a grand total of 1 Super Bowl ,AND the only thing he cares about is HIMSELF . He doesn't belong in the same paragraph as Bart Starr , who was truly a great quarterback, leader and man /role model .
I agree totally with this film. However, I thought for sure Aaron Rodgers would be part of it. Possibly because he hasn't retired yet. Anyway, Bart Starr was tremendous. I thought I heard in one of the NFL films, he threw 194 passes without an interception. I believe he went an entire 14 game season without a pick. If my memory serves me correctly, that's just incredible!
Favre was a system QB when he had success. The system is what stacked up his completion %, TD's, and yards. When Favre tossed the system aside, things went poorly, and that's where his high INT % comes from. Favre had a very short yards per attempt yet had a very high INT %. Holmgren tailored the O to limit Favre's bad side, and it worked. Favre got a high comp %, and the receivers got a lot of yards after catch that all went into Favre's stats. But when Favre needed to come thru, he failed.
Excellent and well researched video. Funny thing is that Starr was almost not the Packers QB. Lombardi was high on a kid named Joe Francis. Starr had terrible preseason performances, and Francis looked like a superstar. Vice Versa, Francis was also slow to absorb football knowledge, whereas Starr was a film rat, and that would give me the edge to secure the starting job midway through Lombardi's first season as coach.
Of course, this list will have to be modified to accommodate Aaron Rodgers, but I too believe that Bart Starr is the greatest quarterback that Green Bay has ever had. God Bless.
Wow, good list, you made some good points. But here's where I agree & disagree, "favre lost some games because of Int's"... That maybe the truth but you can't leave the fact that "if it wasn't for favre & some crazy throws, the team wouldn't even be in the game."... It was because his "never say die" attitude did Green Bay do so well. If Holmgrahm would've stayed in Green Bay instead of going to Seattle, then I see Green Bay not only as a Super Bowl winner but they would've been very dominating. My list is this 1) Brett Favre 2) Aaron Rodgers 3) Bart Starr 4) Don Majkowski 5) Lynn Dicky Because star was good but he also had hall of famer Jim Taylor at FB, Hall of Fame guard Jerry Kramer, Paul Horning & Ray Nitschke, that was a great team in general... To bad Ahman Green wasn't the backup the first time Levens went down, you would have seen a much better team. I miss the old days & I loved watching the Green Bay packers. There will never be a greater player then Brett Favre.
I agree with this list and I agree with Starr over Farve, but if this list was updated, even now I'd say Rodger over Farve. I know Farve at least got them to the Super Bowl twice and only won one, and Rodgers so far has only gotten us to one (and won it of course), but I'll never forget the 2007-08 NFC Championship Game, Farves last game as a Packer, and as stated here, and as I'll never forget we lost on an interception Farve gave up. Our loss in Seattle in the 2014-15 NFC Championship Game, that was do to first letting the Seahawks recover an onside kick, then our defense being unable to adapt to the Seahawks switching to a running game rather then a passing game, not to mention two fourth down fields goals when we had the ball in the redzone earlier in the game when we should have gone for the touchdown on at least one of them (the first one was less then a yard from the redzone for fuck sake), but Rodgers did his share to win us that game, and the offensive line did one of the best jobs I've ever seen to protect him since he was playing injured, it wasn't his fault we lost, and just in general Rodgers is known for not throwing interceptions considering it gives everyone a heart attack when he does give up one. Farve is a legend, but Rodgers is more like Starr in general I feel.
Favre singlehandedly won the Seahawks game before the Giants game in 2007. Everybody forgets that. Rodgers wouldn't have brought that team back on his best day.
IHCTerra Grant has since been released because he was so useless. He only came on in late 2007 because the Packers had completely sold out to the pass. Then the first team (Seattle) that came out in run defense destroyed him. He had 2 fumbles in 2 carries and it was 0-14. Favre took over and brought the team back then Grant got yards in garbage time.
You'll spin anything into a Favre hatewagon. "2nd scoring drive" to conveniently leave out the 2 Grant fumble drives and Favre TD drive. Garbage time was way before the 4th Qtr in that game too, and Grants yards came after the D had sold back out to the pass (like all season). The backup RB who was benched even had a long play in that game because of that (forgot him name).
It's a spin. You conveniently said "2nd and 3rd scoring drive" and said nothing about the 1st 1 where Favre scored or the 2 nonscoring drives before that where Grant fumbled. Had Favre not engineered that 1st drive which ended on an improntu pass call that he called, that game was over. The new TD record holder is going to join Favre in the 10 most INTs record list as soon as he throws 13 more. That list also includes Marino, Blanda, Johnny U and Tarkenton. I guess there are also 40 quarterbacks better than them too.
IHCTerra I'm beginning to think you never even watched the Seattle game. That game would have been 0-56 without Favre taking over. Nice try on the little Manning "spin" (another spin failure). You know that's not what I meant.
I'm not thrilled with Favre's schenanigans but I gotta put him at number one even though I've never seen Bart Starr play. Favre is a living legend. Starr was a hero. As the saying goes, "Heroes will be remembered, but legends never die"
I can't disagree more. Starr's name will also far longer than Favre's, and I hope they both last forever. Starr was at his best when the stakes were the highest, and no other QB has been better in those situations. Favre was not. He could throw the ball through a wall, but not always through the defenders when it had to be done.
@soadpwnsyou You're right. A defense should be able to withstand the 6 INT's in 2001 playoff game. Or the two INT's and a fumble by their QB in 2002 playoffs. Or the horrible pick in 2003. Or the 4 INT's in 2004. Topped off with a backbreaker in 2007 and another in 2009 (thank god for Vikings). Favre was great when he had Holmgren and/or there was no pressure. Turn up the heat and he would collapse. He had great abilities but no work ethic to go beyond them. He couldn't handle the elite.
Last time I looked a quarterback's job is to win championships, not passing titles, not most tds, etc . . . Puzzling that so many people seem not to get this. Ah, well. Cheers!
As a Packer fan, I think Bart Starr has contributed way more to the organization than Favre. Favre did return the Packers from mid level amateur hour to a playoff contenders, but (despite Ted Thompson kicking him out) I do feel like he stabbed us in the back when he went to the Vikings. Starr was the former glory that the Packers were trying to get back.
Starr is #1 period! Yeah, Tom Brady has won more Super Bowls, but Bart Starr didn’t have to CHEAT in order to win at least three of his championships, as Brady & Coach Bill “Belicheat” have! The Brady Bunch has been convicted 3X by the NFL! #2 Rodgers it’s hardly fair that the overtime loss to the Cardinals in 2009 was blamed on the Rogers called “fumble“. If you look at the replay, you can see that Rodgers was clearly facemasked on the play, so the touchdown should have been nullified had the refs called the play properly. Good defense would also have given Rodgers a shot at more SB rings. #3 is Favre Too many INTs in clutch games. Many people discuss the way far as quarterback for the Vikings beat the Packers twice in 2009. What isn’t mentioned is that the Packers beat Favre’s Vikings twice in 2010. First game 28-24, decided on a Favre “Pick-6” The last game was most definitive: Rodgers/Green Bay 31 Favre/Minnesota 7.
Majik Man's Injury was caused by a brutal illegal tackle according to today's standard...just saying....also i was born in GB in 71, i lived over 20 years of my early life before i saw i winning season...but now we rock and i inherited season tickets...i love karma
i can agree with Bart Starr. The only thing I can say for Favre is that if we didn't have him since 92 we could have been one of the worst nfl teams in the for a stretch of 17 years. God knows how it would have turned out if we didn't have favre. He gave us a lot. But unlike Favre, Starr always came through (on the field, not so much as a coach lol).
Excellent analysis. I totally agree with your reason for why Favre is not #1. Starr seemed to do no wrong in he playoffs. Favre? Well...let's just say I lost my temper watching him play more than a handful times in the playoffs. That said, I don't think Starr would be able to be a "Starr" in today's game, so I would draft Favre over Starr. But, when we compare how Starr performed in his era to Favre, you got to go with the Alabamaia rather than the Mississippian.
As somebody who bleeds Green & Gold, I'm glad to see that you didn't commit the fashionable atrocity of ranking #4 over #15. Lynn Dickey couldn't get #12 retired, let's see if A-rod can. list of top 5 Bears QB's: 1) Sid Luckman 2) Sid Luckman 3) Sid Luckman 4) Jim McMahon 5) uh... never mind.
***** Don Majkowski was the best - no question. Look at the team they played with and what was accomplished. MAJIK led the Packers out of the middle ages. Favre would never even be known if Majik hadn't been injured by a referee and league allowed violation.
+Daniel Lockwood No he didn't, and his best season was his only good one. Now if he wasn't injured so often he probably would have had a better career but that isn't the case.
If you go by the STATS... Aaron Rodgers should always be right behind The General. The only difference is the back to back SuperBowls, with the 1966 trophy making it 3 in a row.... Rodgers QB stats are almost the SAME as Bart Starr... very few INTs and LOTS OF TDs. His public presence also mirrors Bart. Adding Rodgers will probably take MAJIK MAN off .... but he is still a huge FAV of mine!!!!
Correct. I was aware of that. And, I mentioned to the Author that it needed to be updated for 2014. PLUS.. as far as all the others that he left out... in Top NFL QB's versus Top GBP QB's ...two different debates.... I mentioned he should add that context to the discussion. Favre threw away more Championships than anyone else I have ever researched. He had the Coach, he had the Defense, and he had a great Offensive Line, especially in 2002,3,4 seeing the great play of the LG in Mike Wahle. There was no reason, conceivably, where Favre couldn't have studied Bart Starr's videos and brought a more concise type of play at QB. None. But, he was who he was. And, videos of him & Mike Holmgren in the screening room prove that. Him falling asleep, not knowing the terminology, not giving a rat's ass what the HC was trying to get him to see when it comes to opposing Defenses. 2001 - Packers were the Team to beat 2002 - they had barely lost any personnel from 2001 2003 - We were winning when a lot figured we were too dysfunctional. But having Gravedigger AND Grady at NT helped seal the opposing Offenses to very little success. FAVRE THREW AWAY that chance at going up against Fox and the Panthers whom everyone knew would lose against the Packers. It was a gimme SuperBowl run. 2004. well....Favre's antic in 2003 sealed the DC's fate and it was pretty much all over. Which is why the BoD and the GM felt it was high time to replace the HC and go back to Square One. At least someone had better sense than to sit back and let Favre run the whole Org down into the ground. I enjoyed Favre playing as much as anyone. BUT..Favre's stats in the Playoffs show the World... he shouldn't even be on the Team. Period. Regular Season is one thing. But the NFL is about the SuperBowl. And, Favre just wasn't the man to bring it home. Without REGGIE WHITE..Favre never wins any SuperBowls.
The number of SuperBowls is a reflection of the team organization putting the total talent package on the field around a talented QB. Green Bay is lacking in this area and is wastong A- Rod's brilliance.
@JMajik24 ... Probably as much as they appreciated the five fumbles by the rest of the team in the second half that resulted in 14 points for the Saints.
Nah. New List. 5) Jim McMahon. Two time Superbowl Champion. 4)Kurt Warner-beat Rodgers and Favre in the Playoffs. One Superbowl and Arena league hall of fame inductee. 3)Doug Pederson,- two time superbowl Champion, one with packers and one Coaching the Eagles to a Championship, more to come. 2)Curly Lambeau . They named the stadium after him. That is how great he was. Won between 6 and 11 championships, depending how you define championship. 1. Bart Starr. Greatest playoff Quarterback of all time only one playoff loss, six championships. Only Qb in nfl history to win three championships consecutively. Called all the plays on the field. The definition of class act. The embodiment of what it means to be a man. Played for 2 hours in minus 17 degree weather against the Dallas Cowboys and with 3 seconds left on the clock called the greatest play of all time. The right guard false start, quarterback sneak to win the game. The genius of the call is that it was too cold for the refs to blow their whistles, and after the touchdown, he knew the refs would rather just go inside and get warm rather than play one more down. However, mediocre head coach. Honorable mentions. Brett Farve. one Championship, Perhaps the greatest football player of all time(consecutive game streak) perhaps the toughest player of all time. And Aaron Rodgers-won a superbowl as a wild card team, Hail Mary thrower. All time highest passer rating.
Great pick. Bart Starr is not only the greatest Packer QB, he is the greatest Packer ever. Starr is precursor to other excellent game managers such as Joe Montana and Tom Brady --- and it appears Mr. Aaron Rodgers. Those QB's didn't always put up gaudy numbers but they were winners and that is the ultimate measure of a QB.
As much as I hated him in purple, I gotta put Favre at number 1. He resurrected a dead franchise. But I will admit his playoff mistakes give Starr an edge. I'm just glad we've had such great quarterbacks throughout our history and it continues to this day.
Bart Starr had an amazing team and the greatest coach ever, Also Brett Favre has been called the greatest quarterback ever, so if you say bart starr is better than him you are saying he is as good if not better than joe montana dan marino and so forth, i love bart starr and i love his 5 championship seasons, but i have to say brett favre is better by a landslide.

Bottom line? Get it done. Starr, a nobody out of college, took Lombardi's offense and drove it home.
Mr Starr is also a class act. One true gentleman! You'd say the same if you ever get the chance to meet him.

@WarEagle140 yeah true thats a hell of a list
Aaron should hav been on that list... after only starting for a year? Dude did his homework and made some interesting observations. Although I would have rather seen Heber on there instead of the Majik Man.
Jon, do you have any more clips highlights of Tobin Rote?
@emantabrizi how much did they apreciate that interception at the NFC championship game?
I still cringe with I see Majik go down in Arizona. The hit changed everything.
And also your videos are awesome jonspike87
Lynn Dickey was such an underrated QB. If he hadn’t suffered injuries, he would have been one of the best in the NFL during his playing career
Favre was good at throwing picks in the playoffs. He's #3
Favre got them to the playoffs and has a better winning percentage than Rodgers.
@ilovejourney1 Kramer was great, don't get me wrong, but Starr has so much charisma. Every time they announce Packer alums at games, he gets the loudest and longest applause.
This video was made long before Aaron Rodgers ever showed his greatness in 2009 Rogers has had many great years since then but before
So Favre and Rodgers can fight it out for #2. There is no question who is #1.
Aaron Rodgers won a grand total of 1 Super Bowl ,AND the only thing he cares about is HIMSELF . He doesn't belong in the same paragraph as Bart Starr , who was truly a great quarterback, leader and man /role model .
i was cofused until i looked at the date
The Brick master same
Yoooo saaaaame
Same
how do you get all this old footage?
I agree totally with this film. However, I thought for sure Aaron Rodgers would be part of it. Possibly because he hasn't retired yet. Anyway, Bart Starr was tremendous. I thought I heard in one of the NFL films, he threw 194 passes without an interception. I believe he went an entire 14 game season without a pick. If my memory serves me correctly, that's just incredible!
This was made before Rodgers got his chance.
Bart Starr you are number one in may book
Favre was a system QB when he had success. The system is what stacked up his completion %, TD's, and yards. When Favre tossed the system aside, things went poorly, and that's where his high INT % comes from. Favre had a very short yards per attempt yet had a very high INT %. Holmgren tailored the O to limit Favre's bad side, and it worked. Favre got a high comp %, and the receivers got a lot of yards after catch that all went into Favre's stats. But when Favre needed to come thru, he failed.
Tobin Rote (1950-56) is the cousin of New York Giants star halfback Kyle Rote.
Lamar McHan was originally the starter, I think, for Lombardi.
Of course, this list will have to be modified to accommodate Aaron Rodgers, but I too believe that Bart Starr is the greatest quarterback that Green Bay has ever had. God Bless.
This needs to be updated. I agree to this list Pre super bowl 45
If Lynn Dickey had played under Bill Walsh and the 49ers in the 80s, today we would be talking about how Dickey won 5 Superbowls.
My list is this
1) Brett Favre
2) Aaron Rodgers
3) Bart Starr
4) Don Majkowski
5) Lynn Dicky
Because star was good but he also had hall of famer Jim Taylor at FB, Hall of Fame guard Jerry Kramer, Paul Horning & Ray Nitschke, that was a great team in general... To bad Ahman Green wasn't the backup the first time Levens went down, you would have seen a much better team.
I miss the old days & I loved watching the Green Bay packers. There will never be a greater player then Brett Favre.
@metalmaniac1993 I agree. He's young and hopefully we've only begun to see his talent.
Rodgers will be #1 packers passer of all time, by the time he retires.
My top 3
1. Brett Favre
2. Aaron Rodgers
3. Bart Starr
Aaron Rodgers #1 best td to interception ratio in history no one will ever beat it
@DrDeath26 Couldn't agree more.
Anyone know the songs that played during Brett Favre and Bart Starr?
Bart Starr won when the pressure was on! He didn't fold in Championship games, that'd why he's the greatest ever!
Ah, before the a rod era
@soadpwnsyou You're right. A defense should be able to withstand the 6 INT's in 2001 playoff game. Or the two INT's and a fumble by their QB in 2002 playoffs. Or the horrible pick in 2003. Or the 4 INT's in 2004.
Topped off with a backbreaker in 2007 and another in 2009 (thank god for Vikings).
Favre was great when he had Holmgren and/or there was no pressure. Turn up the heat and he would collapse. He had great abilities but no work ethic to go beyond them. He couldn't handle the elite.
1 Starr 2. Rodgers 3. Favre 4. Dickey 5. Majowski
this needs an updated version with arod
and a pop filter
yep
macheath77 lol true
Kree a rod #3
He's good, but needs 3 championships and 2 Super Bowls(with honors) to catch Starr.
That's the second time the Packers had three championships in a row, btw.
Some forget about the earlier set.
Only team to do it once, and twice.
I still have to love my man Brett Favre, in my opinion he's #1 (a position that Rodgers will soon take)
I'm a die hard Packers fan. But am so ashamed of myself, that I have never heard of the other 3 guys.
I was about to go nuts, then I saw it was published in 2009. I think maybe it's time to update this.
Aaron Rodgers will be hands down the best quarterback in Green Bay's history when all is said and done.
Bart Starr will always be the greatest packer to ever touch a football
Packers everyday twice on Sundays!!!
First game 28-24, decided on a Favre “Pick-6”
The last game was most definitive: Rodgers/Green Bay 31
Favre/Minnesota 7.
Majik Man's Injury was caused by a brutal illegal tackle according to today's standard...just saying....also i was born in GB in 71, i lived over 20 years of my early life before i saw i winning season...but now we rock and i inherited season tickets...i love karma
yeah he is
i can agree with Bart Starr.
How does its named the soundtrack piece of Brett Favre??
Me: "Favre holds more records than ARod?"
*Looks at date*
Favre is the best
Lynn Dickey couldn't get #12 retired, let's see if A-rod can.
list of top 5 Bears QB's:
1) Sid Luckman
2) Sid Luckman
3) Sid Luckman
4) Jim McMahon
5) uh... never mind.
My favorites are definitely Brett Starr and Bart Favre. I like Bart the best though.
Now if he wasn't injured so often he probably would have had a better career but that isn't the case.
ive touched Barts old jersey. i gotta say those 2 are interchangable at #1
If you go by the STATS...
This video was made in 2009
2001 - Packers were the Team to beat
2002 - they had barely lost any personnel from 2001
2003 - We were winning when a lot figured we were too dysfunctional.
Time to update with Rodgers. Cheers 🍻
Nah. 2)Curly Lambeau
This was BEFORE Aaron Rogers? Has to be. 4 time NFL MVP, super Bowl Champion, MVP
Rodgers is already #2 on this list and quickly closing in on the number one spot!
I wish I saw Bart play I want his jersey so bad
Need a top 6. Where does Rodgers rank?
6th.
As much as I hated him in purple, I gotta put Favre at number 1. He resurrected a dead franchise. But I will admit his playoff mistakes give Starr an edge. I'm just glad we've had such great quarterbacks throughout our history and it continues to this day.
i think rogers should be in there
but any way that was a really good vid
2009. It's time to update because Rodgers is up there near the top. Maybe even #2
Tobin Rote is the cousin of New York Giants great Kyle Rote.
Wow this video was made back in 09, there is a new sheriff in town,
Bart Starr had an amazing team and the greatest coach ever, Also Brett Favre has been called the greatest quarterback ever, so if you say bart starr is better than him you are saying he is as good if not better than joe montana dan marino and so forth, i love bart starr and i love his 5 championship seasons, but i have to say brett favre is better by a landslide.
GO PACK GO!!!!!!!
