Thank you for the video! I’m coming to Japan in September (so maybe a month out now?) and I’m trying to get a rough “mock” budget in mind. This was super helpful! ✨
If possible, could you make a video talking about your travels while in JET? I hear from a lot of past JETs that they did get to travel and explore, but I'm trying to picture that in my head and I'm at a loss, like is it looked down if you take holidays? Were your out-of-country trips short? Girl I'm lost, I'd love to travel but I'm concerned about stepping on someone's toes..😅😥
Interesting idea!!! I’ve definitely traveled a lot so I’ll have to add this to my list 😳 I will say that you absolutely will step on some toes but it must be done 😎
Your videos are really help full and they make me less nervous to do the jet program!!😌 But i was wondering how you did all the little things? No one ever really makes videos on how they figured out how to get to school or how long you get till you start working once you move or how you learned to get around?
Ah that’s because it’s different for every situation!! Your supervisor will definitely help you with these things. You should expect to start working right away since you’re being paid, but for me that was going to “summer camp” and helping there since it was summer break!
Hi! You mentioned that there is a new law on income tax exemption and that all JETs have to pay income tax? What I know is that JETs from certain countries don't have to pay taxes for the 1st 2 years. Has the policy changed? Thanks!
Actually it might not be all countries! The policy has changed for American JETs as of this year and now they’re responsible for taxes like most other JETs have been, but there may be other countries that are exempt!
Is the salary always set and stone when you first start off in the jet programme ? Is it inappropriate to ask for a higher salary because I plan on getting a degree in education and I have experience in teaching . Also I did not understand what you meant about American taxes? You don't have to pay them if your living in Japan??
Unfortunately there’s no negotiation whatsoever, but you do get standard pay raises every year. If you have all these qualifications I’d suggest taking a paycut for JET for a year and start looking for better paying jobs after. Alternatively you may be able to find a job at an international school or something from abroad, but these jobs are highly competitive. 😔 And for taxes, I meant that you aren’t taxed on income made in Japan under a certain amount (forgot what it exactly is but it’s way more than teachers make)! You still pay Japanese taxes 😆 Sorry if I was unclear
My brain did a "record scratch" when you said that you have a car and didn't take pub trans. I get that you were in a country-ish area then but is that normal where you were?
Yes, it was required as I couldn’t physically get to some schools without one! Same for other rural jets. Some get placed near their schools, but you really never know til you’re there! Public transportation is actually pretty limited in the countryside 😭
@@AllisoninTokyo What university, if you don't mind me asking? I've been thinking about pursuing a graduate degree, as well. If that's information you want to keep private, I totally understand!
No problem, I'm open about it! I go to the University of Tokyo!! Actually my next video will be talking more about the application process if you're interested!
@@AllisoninTokyo Actually I was interested in going the track of JET->Grad School! I'd love to see a video as well if you make one, but a question I'm interested in was whether or not you had to take the GRE or some other test to attend?
That's what I did!! A lot less difficult than it seemed! Thanks, it will be out Tuesday :) Yes, I did take the GRE! But I did it in America before coming because I knew I wanted to go to grad school and if you're placed in the countryside far from the major cities it will be wayyy more difficult 😂
You dont but if you do it may help with your application as they need alts who know how to drive. However you need to have a graduated licence with no restrictions so keep that in mind if youre applying this year
Wait so u could have probably afford a really good apartment I see people who work in the same company some people have apartments for 120,000 yen and others 60-90k yen it seems like those are the people who love to have spending money or save up money
yes! I have met male jets with very long hair (down to their waist), so I don't see why the opposite would be a problem. Piercings and visible tattoos are a problem, but any hairstyle (as long as it's a naturalish color) should be fine!

3 yrs ago the USDJPY was quite alright. Now it’s less than 2k a month with the yen dropping to 157 yen per dollar.
Can you make video about renting a car in japan and all the costs

What are you getting your graduate degree in? And did you have to apply to a program that's taught in English?
International studies! And yes it's in English! :) My Japanese isn't good enough for a Japanese course 😅
