Hey homies! Quick update: The statement of purpose can be found on the highlights reel on my Instagram page @queen_tomi_ Additionally, I unfortunately DO NOT under any circumstances correct statements of purpose. Between working full time and trying to keep my creative passions alive I honestly would not have the time to do the job justice especially with the overwhelming amount of requests I get every application season. I'm really sorry guys but I'd be stretched way too thing 🥺🙏🏾
Hey guys, I just wanted to add a few points about the statement of purpose. I am an incoming shortlisted JET. I’ve made SOPs for both JET and AEON and got into both with flying colors. This is an extremely helpful video, so you should listen to Tomi and be honest in it. Even if you like Anime - I would talk about it. The thing that would make you stand out is your STORYTELLING. Whatever it is that got you into Japanese culture, recall it and talk about how it made you feel. If you have any other skills, talk about it and how you want to use it in Japan. It can be something totally unrelated like how much you love bike riding and want to start a bike club in your community or want to go on a bike riding marathon through japan lol. If you truly love Anime, talk about possibly forming a club or sharing cartoons from your own country in an attempt of culture exchange! When you finally complete your SOP, READ IT OUT LOUD. This is SO crucial. Read it out loud before even letting someone else revise it. You will be able to better pinpoint awkwardness in your SOP and straight grammatical errors. Also download grammarly to help you solve small grammatical errors. I use grammarly for EVERYTHING. Wishing everyone luck that’s applying
Hi. I will come to japan because you are beautiful inside, and I like people like you. could you give me your instagram account ? or facebook? I want to became your friend.
I am applying right now, and while I am nervous, I feel a bit of confidence, too. It's strange. I guess I've grown so much during university that I am prepared for it.
Nerves are important it means you care ablot about what you are doing and confidence is also important because it means you know you got this so i think you got this!
This video is very informative. I'll watch your SOP after drafting mine. Thank you for sharing your experiences. Stay safe and GODBLESS you from the Pearl of the Orient of the Seas, PHILIPPINES!
hi tomi, i started watching your videos recently and i love your personality! the way you share your experience and advice is really helpful and easy to follow. i'm applying this year and your video was my favorite on the application process by far. thank you so much and hope you have a lovely day!
girll, what is the dress code like as a ALT? Also what kind of hairstyles are allowed ?? I have a feeling I cannot show up to work in an afro 😂 and do you teach at a mixed school or a boy school because when i watched your video about the craziest things youve been told, a lot of the weird questions you got in class sounded like they came from male students 😷 love from trinidad 🇹🇹🇯🇲
hey babe! The dress code is different for everyone but for me i wear pretty professional things everyday. Some elementary and junior high school teachers wear p.e comfy wear. and girl yes you can wear that afro! Also my schools are co-head.
Hello. I love your videos and the JET Programme related ones have helped me so much. I'm a fellow Jamaican in my final year at university and I'm applying for the JET Programme this year.
I can’t wait for the video! I am currently doing the application and for some reason I am stumped on the personal statement portion. I’m not liking anything I write 😭 I look forward to all the tips! Thanks in advance for making this video😁😁
Tip* You could start by telling a little about yourself. How do you view this opportunity. What do you hope to give instead of stating what you hope to receive. You should always give more than you want to take. For eg. As an aspiring JET I see this opportunity as my way of sharing with the Japanese people the experiences I have gained through travel. The people I have met and the experiences I have had has made me realise that the glass is always half full and never half empty. It is with this mindset that I hope to tackle............(you get the idea)
Im so excited for your next video! I just found your channel and I shouldn't really be worrying about this at my age but what college did you go to? Thank you so much! I love your channel!
Please can you tell me how much money I need to take with me to survive my first month there... Like theres probably expenses and things to buy after arrival. You can tell me in Japanese currency and I'll convert it to my currency. It would make no sense to apply if I won't be able to afford living there before I get my first pay cheque.
I am not from an English speaking country. I also didn't study in an English medium school. But I'm good in English. I also have a good accent. My pronunciation is good too. If I only have a degree in English can I apply for ALT in japan?
Thank you for super informative and time video, Tomi! p.s. That make-up look is🔥🔥😍😍 Am I the only one who paused the video to get a pen and some paper especially at 14:15-14:43 ?🗒✏
Hi Tomi! I'm from T&T and I am glad to see a Caribbean girl talking about JET. I plan to apply and I am not into anime or manga like you said. I haven't looked at your SOP but do you review others? I would love to have you look at mine.
I mentioned anime on my application and made it to the interview. The interviewers even asked what anime I liked and they talked about the animes they liked.
Thank you so much for this. I am busy working on my application. Can I ask a personal question? Its about the medical tests and all that. Did you have to do all those tests? The Xrays etc? Because as someone who doesnt have medical aid, its pretty expensive. Please let me know
Hello. So I'm thinking of joining the 2022 JET PROGRAMME. So I have the application form already as a draft before printing another one for submission. Is it safe to put "Not Applicable" to some parts of the application or better leave it blank? I've heard that even on forms they are very detailed-oriented.
This is the one thing I am firm on. Yes, you don't need Japanese, but why wouldn't you want to know the basics? Why go to a country where 99% of the population speaks Japanese and then not bother to learn anything? It's very isolating and depending on where you live it can be an absolute nightmare. If you live in Tokyo or don't mind being alone then it's not an issue, but if you are in an isolated area and you are an extroverted person who loves making friends then you better hope you make some good Jet friends because no way you are making friends with the locals unless they know English themselves. You don't have to be fluent, but please learn the bare minimum like how to say hello, goodbye, men, and woman. How to understand emergency announcements, etc. This is just my personal belief, I think it's something that makes life there more enjoyable and less stressful, but everyone is different.
Would it be good to mention something about Black Women Experience in Japan? In terms of likes or dislikes,,,for example only thing Im worried about Japan is the stares from others but I know it's because they don't see ppl like me often.
Hi Tomi, you said you didn’t have any experience with Japanese prior to the program so does that mean that when you were completing the application, you put none for your level under the Japanese language proficiency (reading, writing, speaking and listening) part of the application?
a few quick questions.... How much Japanese do you know? or what kind of base were you before you first came over to Japan? Are you learning Japanese whilst over there?
me, not even in college yet "surely videos on doing well for the interview are useful to me. now" lmaooo I start this upcoming spring.. got some years away oops
I hope you see this question 🤞🏾 but can you tell me a little more about the kind of questions they asked you in the interview? Also, does it prevent you from being accepted if your degree has no honors?
lol i think i answered you in my dm's on insta but i'll answer again just in case anyone has the same question. I will be doing a video on the interview to be uploaded next Thursday and also i think honors would give you a better chance but a degree is a degree!
How is JET about tattoos? I know I will have to keep them covered but do they ask about them? One of the smaller companies I saw asked about them so I was wondering if it was a big thing
You can definitely have tattoos and still come on JET! They might ask stuff like 'are you scared that people will stare' 'are you ok with not being permitted into some onsens?' but other than that you're all set!!
Thanks for the helpful tips; it made me feel so much better! c: I'm applying this year and am so nervous. P.S. I love the cute Halloween decorations you put up!
I was going back and forth between the JET program and the EPIK program (South Korea) and then I realized japan's cost of living is higher and they don't pay for your rent :/
