Overwatch: When to SWAP OFF Healer

  • Happy 2017! This is a new series from Your Overwatch called "Your Coach" where we review submitted gameplays. In this first episode, we look at the demise of a team on Anubis. 2CP takes a ton of coordination (or luck) to win out on point B and in this video we'll discuss the errors of the team and possible swaps that could've gotten more value than the public-matchmaking-meta-approved 2-healer combo. Knowing that you MUST get speed boost value on Lucio is a huge information advantage. If you can't coordinate it, likely you'll simply have more impact on the team doing something else, even if it tilts the team by having only one healer. A tilted team with a chance to win is better than an approved team comp that sadly loses, in my eyes anyway. -F

    Being the support implies that you should have more game sense and don't tunnel vision as much as your teammates, so, if your support recommends grouping up, backing up, etc... then at least consider the option. Remember, your support is always watching you through the walls (creepy) and clearly sees your mistakes, so don't take certain commands in the wrong way, he's not trying to be the leader or something, he's only doing a part of his role, building an strategy where you can get the most out of you team (at least that's how it should be, then everything falls apart in solo q)

      Usmle12 Support always thinks they're better than everyone else, eating up those "thanks" emotes and shrugging it off as they get all the votes for card. Support is the cancer of overwatch.

    learning lucio
    step 1: if you want to move, speed boost. if you dont move, heal.
    step 2: amp when shit goes down
    step 3: boop
    step 4: ult when shit goes real, also speedboost since the temporary armor compensates for healing.
    but thats just what goes through my head when im lucio.

      I disagree with the speedboost in step 4, if your team is low, after the shield goes away they will still be the same health, so it's dependant. always speeding is not a hardset rule

    • @oicmorez4129
      @oicmorez4129 7 лет назад

      well you should ult before they are "almost dead"(start ulting when ur team gets below 130 hp, you should fall on the ground with the beat before they die) , then heal them to "fine" amount of health (above 130) and then speedboost so they can dodge stuff and things like d'va/symmetra/reaper/rein can be more effective

    Here's what I see when someone's the last to choose healer in comp: OMG MY TEAM SUCKS, I'll switch to DPS after two failed pushes and kill the whole team.

    • @sillybobby5189
      @sillybobby5189 7 лет назад +4

      the most ironic thing is that they usually do the same amount - sometimes worse - of work as the dps when they switch. Most of the time it's just the support has crappy positioning

    • @joshuajenkins9263
      @joshuajenkins9263 7 лет назад +4

      john west I play healer up to the point where my team expects me to heal everyone and get kills. then I swap to symettra. if you expect me to play support and kill them that is what I will play. otherwise protect the support.

    • @JunipurrPaws
      @JunipurrPaws 7 лет назад +5

      Haha yess :-( And usually the problem is either 1 tank, no tank or people not grouping with the tank so dps aren't getting the kills. So people assume that more DPS will fix the problem lol

    • @Marki9029
      @Marki9029 7 лет назад +2

      I stay healer because I know not everyone is good enough to play Mercy effectively. Even if we're losing, I take the loss because clearly what I'm doing isn't working, though the team could use some work most of the time.

    • @zed20xx53
      @zed20xx53 7 лет назад +1

      You gotta be able to use that Speed Boost somehow, especially since Heal Mode is nearly useless when you Sound Barrier. If you don't utilize it, you'd probably get more Healing Per Second with any other healer since Lucio's HPS isn't very good as it's more of an "aura effect."

    • @TioMegamanX
      @TioMegamanX 7 лет назад +1

      You would be surprised, I have been blamed for a loss because I was using speed mode even when the situation calls for it.

    • @hayanyang
      @hayanyang 7 лет назад +1

      VanFanel1980mx well, they were wrong. I have experienced that playing Lucio at lower part of ranks is extremely frustrating because nobody knows how to utilize his speed boost & Lucio can't frag as much unless he boops enemy to death. I'd rather use heroes like Zenyatta or Ana, who actually has potential to get frags (kills) in a 1v1 fight.
      P.S. Use voice chats, add friendly skilled players and party with them, watch as much Overwatch guide videos as you can.

    • @TioMegamanX
      @TioMegamanX 7 лет назад

      Hayan I am probably a permanent resident of Silver tier (maybe is my true skill rank anyway), sometimes when I play Lucio I get some decent kills but it certainly hurts when people expect you to be a top notch healer AND be able to take care of yourself all alone.

    Nice video, but I feel it's a bit deconstructed to be helpful. What I mean here is that it's 20 minutes long with no clear markers. You talk about it as a whole (and do it well) but for people who don't already know all that it's hard to follow and remember.

      No, thanks for the feedback. Maybe next time I'll try to segment sections more clearly. Issue is, in an actual game it plays fluidly, so I may have to toy with the chronological order or pacing in order to mold it into points. -F

    Feels bad when your Dva is just a Genji/Tracer main in disguise.
    (I really like your slight twist on the coach video by giving overwall advice to everyone and not just the player in the video)
    Edit:
    Short version: Switching to a surprise counter hero works extremely well late game.
    long version:
    OMG BEST ADVICE. This is why I try and keep a big hero pool (even if its a shallow pool). I stole a 2-2 KOH game mid game 5 by switching to Reinhardt and playing it as DPS Reinhardt and charging the other team and swinging madly on every spawn in. I would usually hit the Lucio (there solo healer) somehow and get hammer shots on the Tracer and she had to back out of the fight and my team always cleaned up because of that during my death. I had tried all the tanks during the match, I think I started as Ana first game and said fuck it this team couldn't use nano boost. We came back down 0-2 and we were getting stomped in game 5. It was amazing, a charging Reinhardt fragged at least 1 person and just damaged there team (which was grouped up well), Instead of discording or keeping there health up I was able to lower the health of at least half the team and make them killable. I could of shielded but yet again my team wasn't good at grouping up. But they were good at bouncing on potential kills. It hurt the other team so much they pulled out a charging Reinhardt and I met him mid-charge to let him know what was up.
    I once lost a game on that there castle map because in the last 60 seconds the opposing team pulled out the attack symmetra and no one on my team could deal with it.

    I like this. Flex picking for the sake of your team is where it's at. Too many times I see people get way too committed to their pick because they're "in the meta" or switch 50 times because they think they have to carry the team. There has to be a balance between playing whats "meta" and playing what's needed for a given situation.

    I like this format for several reasons. 1 explaining "basic" knowledge to the general community increasing the overall play. (Yes I realise not every player watches this but you get my point I hope). And secondly, infinite content! There's always going to be someone in need of coaching, or having a question about a certain map/hero/ability whatever... So a lot can be done with it. I forsee a growth in vieuws for this awesome channel.

    Good video, really like this kind of thing!
    If I can request something I know I'd really like a video talking about when it's best to switch on to certain heroes if your losing i.e. if your team is getting destroyed by character X or character Y, then you should switch to character Z; or if your team is losing because they're not doing thing A or thing B, switch to character C. I think that's the kind of knowledge that's useful at all skill levels and in solo-queue and six-stack, but obviously I appreciate that it's a very difficult video to do and especially to keep timely in the event of patch changes, but it's something I'd really appreciate.
    Hope you guys continue to do well in the new year, I for one find it surprising that this channel and Overwatch itself aren't even one year old yet, it all feels like it's been around for so much longer, much kudos!

  • @Inqway

    Some things i noticed (as another Lucio player): 1. Use the wallride! Instead of being on the ground with your team use the walls and pillars to zip around. You wont get hit by stray bullets aimed at your team and if you get good at it the enemy will have a hard time even finding you (good example is DSPStanky). You will also get the top-down perspective which is really useful as the shotcaller. 2. When you see a D.VA nuke go off like at 7:30, switch to speed; it might just give you and your teammates that extra boost needed to get into cover. 3. As Freedo said: prioritize speedboost more. Something i se alot of people including myself do as Lucio is switch to heals as soon as someone has taken any sort of damage. Don't do this, especially if you aren't the only support. The speedboost helps 4 other players apart from the one who took damage and may help them secure kills etc. Sometimes (as in the example with Genji in the video) switching to speed to let ppl retreat to safety is better than trying to heal them out of a tough spot.

  • @DerLaberheld
    @DerLaberheld 7 лет назад +3

    In Solo Q I use my Support ults before we even engage, because it is the only Option to get some people to push. Soundbarrier is the one Signal everyone gets, most of the time... :D
    Something else: In a Team Fight i mostly use Heal Boost and just Switch depending on the situation. Of course i use Speed Boost for engages, but once the Team is on the Spot i prefer healing even if it only means, I Survive longer, but i still have the feeling it increases the Survivability of the whole team.

    XFreedo I like how you used the example of a Lucio speedboost not getting value to show when it's appropriate to swap for something that would counter an opponents position. It's important to know when and why you should switch, because it helps other get a better sense of the game and come to know what actions you take can help or make a problem worse. For the uninitiated this video may not make the most sense but for someone of average skill this was pretty informative. Didn't think about the Zenyata as the single healer in that sense, being better at healing certain targets, for example. Thanks!

      Hanzo , Genji , Mccree and Widowmaker are the best healers since even though it says "no healers" on the little thingy on the right most people still prioriteze picking these I suppose to Lucio , Ana and Mercy.

      This game is so unbalanced how is Ana supposed to function in a metagame dominated by healers like Torbjorn's turret and pilot D.Va

  • @LibriumMusic
    @LibriumMusic 7 лет назад +8

    IMO DVA is better at providing protection for her team than winston is, hence why I think Dva is a real tank, although I'd always want a rein, except maybe on certain koth maps.

    • @emlun
      @emlun 7 лет назад +1

      In some ways, yes, but it depends a lot on play style. D.Va needs to actively spend time on blocking damage, while Winston can simply push a button to block the next 600 damage. A D.Va focusing first on tanking can definitely tank more damage than a Winston doing the same, but it's hard to get a solo queue team in a formation (i.e. deathball) that maximises the benefit.

    • @LibriumMusic
      @LibriumMusic 7 лет назад

      Emil Lundberg True, but I play 6stack so it's a lot easier to utilise defense matrix.

    • @Peteru69
      @Peteru69 7 лет назад +1

      D.va does it better than Winston. Winston is a disruptor and great at fucking with snipers and healers. D.va can do the same, but she's still better in the front of a group fight than him. Rein instead of D.va or Winston would've probably won the game. Easier for the healers to heal, since he blocks a lot of damage thrown at your dps.
      But Platinum is just a fuckfest of players who play too passively and then they split up in the middle of a push. I'm glad I'm out of plat.

  • @urfork1
    @urfork1 7 лет назад

    The tips you gave are exactly how I've come to learn to play. Starting off my entire overwatch career at low silver, in under a month I developed a play style to switch to what I can carry with. If things in solo q aren't working then I switch to zarya, (I have a 80% win ratio as her, and I play mostly solo.) but when playing in a team I can play her just as well, but more team oriented. I like this new series

      The only difference is more communication. Both bad and good.i Went through a hundred levels and season 1 on PS4 and since then I played on PC. There are SOME instances where skill on PC dominate but for the most part it's around the same, just easier to aim on PC and easier to communicate since you can type

    i disagree with the choice of reinhart in such unorganized team. reinhart is very easy to be killed with only a zen with him. if the group is already organized the existing team comp in this video could already be working long before the game ends.
    speed boost is nice with a lot of protection but lucio is very squishy in that mode. unorganized team will not care enough to protect a lucio in speed boost.

      matthew evans I play mostly solo too but I personally think no tank is a lot worse. Tanks help you get in the fight with taking the damage and not dying; yes, you're getting healing to stay alive but if they have tanks there is gonna be no way to get a good enough amount of picks to turn the fight your way. On the other side, if you have no healers but tanks, there is a chance some people can solo heal. They can rely on their self while as long as the DPS get picks the tanks can push in win the fight.

    • @Chris0830.
      @Chris0830. 7 лет назад +1

    • @aliciacarr9014
      @aliciacarr9014 7 лет назад +8

      No Tank probably. A lot of the more used heroes have self heals or soldier even has a group heal. Plus on payload maps, the payload itself has a low level healing effect. Of course having just a Roadhog is as bad as having no tank as he has no way to protect other team members. Even Zarya can protect one other for very short periods of time.

      I always pay attention to teammates in open spaces, with roadhog so frequently picked this season, it's easy to get charge by messing up his hook combo. Think about who the easiest target is on your team and keep an eye out for them, and remember if in a team fight you can use your own bubble to body block a teammate who's getting focused down if your ally bubble is on cooldown. but I'm sure YourOverwatch has some better pointers to give o7

    The analysis of zenyatta as a squishy healer at around 10:30 is spot on. I ran Zenyatta for maybe 70 hours as solo healer in my IRL friend group, about 20 of those prior to his shield buff/discord nerf.
    Genji might not be a 'meta pick' right now, but much in the way that mercy can pocket pharah, Zenyatta can pocket flankers from a much greater distance with both harmony and discord

    One thing happening at a payload map: I filled as a second healer. The team went all flanky, even tanks and the other healer. Going all around the map not giving a damn about the payload. Minutes went by, and suddenly there's like 3 seconds left. "Oh damn, we should push!" Pushed 90% of the way on overtime, giving the enemy team "hours" to work with on their turn.

    My dreams of Diamond are gone... I was, in the good times, 2750, but then we lost a few. "No big deal" I thought, "I can rise again. I'm only a few levels South." But then, the bad times. Loss after loss came to me. I thought we didn't have enough players but after seeing my almost all gold team pitted against diamonds again and again, my hope faded. Down to 2550. Then I thought, "Well, it can't get much worse, might as well play solo queue. I know a thing or too know thanks to channels like this. I think I can at least have fun." What a fool I was, you see the more you lose, the more ranking you lose. I lost one game at the top of my team and watched, in horror, as 50 rank points were shredded from my score. Game after game after game I watched, astonished, as I was pitted against Platinums and higher due to my rank, but was teamed with Golds due to my score. It was so low on the scale I was once again finding Hanzos! And now, after coming on top (almost) always of my team, and doing my best to balance out what my team needed and what I could do to carry them, I have lost about 5 games and my rank falls to 2347, 400 points from where I was and 700 points from my dream. Goodnight sweet Diamond. Maybe next time

    Im a lucio main who just hit masters only playing lucio in soloq. Ur doing pretty good! However, you can improve by using speed boost a LOT more. Also, I know wallriding can be intimidating, but if you really wanna improve, go into skirmishes (yes I know turn it on haha) and try and escape from the enemies for as long as possible, only wallriding and songswapping. This method of practice pushed my lucio out out high plat and up into masters, it's great for your wallriding and other movement mechanics! Best of luck!

      Jack McGillion You seem to be rather agitated by my first comment which was not directed at you. I assume you are upset because you are underage as well. Rather than using this youtube app, please use the child version. You haven't even finished your education so please don't try to mock someone for their lack of education.

    Awesome video. Really great insight. If you get a chance to read this I suggest a few small tweaks. Please make a playlist on your channel that all these videos will go into. That way people who are new to the channel as well as veterans can go back and watch all the videos. Since you release so many videos these ones will get buried over time. Also Putting "Your Coach" in the title will make it easier to search as well. This channel is the only reason I still play overwatch. Ive gotten so much better by watching and implementing the techniques from here.

    One time I was solo queue Ana healing around ~2,400 on Ilios. After I died the enemy Reaper ran towards our spawn and intercepted me. I think this happened two or three times before I rage swapped to Mei. My logic was pretty simple: if I wasn't going to be contributing as a healer then I may as well switch. Here's the thing, my team didn't seem to care enough to help me out, but they cared enough to flame me for switching. The other healer said she wasn't going to heal me (how backward is that?). I ended up dominating as Mei. We won the round. Some of this was my fault for losing to the Reaper; however, as far as I am concerned, switching was the correct decision.

    One hero that you neglect to mention in this video, probably because she's a support: Symmetra. A shield generator would have helped the uncoordinated team stay alive, since they lacked a roadhog to get those cheese instagibs. It also would have baited the enemy carries into coming hunting for it, which essentially amounts to a pick since there's great nest positions for symmetra to build in outside the temple gate. Yes, the shield generator doesn't have as much impact as a Rein ult or roadhog ult, but the shields are amazing for simply staying alive - something you stressed as vital for capping the point.

    I once had 1:00 left to cap on Anubis with my team. we rushed in, capped A in 30 seconds and then rushed to B and withput too much struggle capped it too. that was 1 insane match

    As a main rein in plat I would say that picking rein with just one healer which is zen - 100% mistake. U can't sustain as rein without good healing. Ana is pretty much must for rein to be viable. So I would say - never pick a Rein if you dont have ana or mercy at your team to heal you(esp with 6 random dudes).

    Hello guys, nice job with the channel. There's something that I have always wanted to discuss with you and with this video now on the table i think that its is the moment. First of all, I've been main healer (Ana, Zen & Lucio) all the time in Overwatch, and I feel that a good performance by me, is a necessary condition to win, but not an enough one. And by that i mean that, if i die my team most likely is going to loose, but if I perform well, I still need my team-mates to do their best to win.
    It has been discussed in this channel that the more skilled player in the team should be the DPS, because they are the "stars" and the ones who win the games, but i don't agree much with this.
    I keep playing games and games with a really good performance, great sustained healing, preventing my tanks or DPS players from dying but, in the end if they aren't doing anything, I'm going to loose the game. And that is frustrating for us healers, feeling that very few times we get the "reward" we think we deserve. I feel that the better way to rank up is mastering one DPS like Soldier or Genji in SoloQ/DuoQ, and that is pretty unfair. It is way more easy to carry games being DPS almost impossible to carry games playing Ana or Lucio. (unless you are a bloody master with them)
    What do you think? Perhaps is a good topic to discuss in a video with the comunity. Leave me a message with your thoughts okay? Thank you guys!

    I'm actually surprised this person is plat. I guess understanding team fights/regrouping/not trickling in is enough to get out of gold, but her movement and positioning on Lucio feels atrocious to me. I don't think she makes herself hard to hit once and often seems to lead charges while trying to shot-call from the backlines (it's weird--like she's hyper passive in between fights then hyper aggressive during a push). This is not really a knock on her, but more questioning my own ability to not get out of plat--I might have to send in a replay lol. I think my aim/positioning/movement is far better, but I'm guessing I'm not as much of a team player (speaking when I play Lucio). Good vid, a bit long, could have been broken up a bit better, but I learned a lot and subbed. Thanks!

    On a match on Dorado in Competitive: I was Lucio, my team was on attack and we couldn't even get to the payload from the point without dying for ~3 minutes...
    I change to Bastion, instantly I get 10 000°C flame from my teammates for "throwing the game away playing that robot"...
    I don't care, go on the second level on the spawn, reap the enemy team who was only paying attention to the floor level, and change back to Lucio, pushing the cart at least to the first point and a bit beyond.
    We still lost that game, as my team was crap and the enemy team got to where we were no problem, but without that change, we wouldn't even leave the point...

    I know it's a team game.
    For solo queue, my last resort (2 mins remaining) is to pick roadhog, and try to get a killing hook off every 6 seconds flat. In an ideal world, you can get off a free kill every 6 seconds, and it isn't that hard in lower elos. If you're smart or lucky, you might be able to get some more one-two shots with the scrap gun.
    It's solo, it's un-co-ordinated, and it doesn't always work, but sometimes, you can nail three people in 18 seconds, maybe even their "problem players" that nobody was dealing with, which allows your team to 6 vs 3 or 6 vs 4, making the pace of the game throw in your favour, and the difficulty in your allies staying alive and making plays, lower, so they in turn kill more themselves.

    Love this video. Everything you said is exactly what my buddies and I face when paired with randos in comp. I love the honesty and straight forwardness you give in the video too. Especially comments about not using Lucio for speed boost. Bravo, keep them coming! I would love to see a video regarding combating stubborn teammates who continue to play the same shitty heroes. Like, what can we do to counter a shitty hanzo or genji on our team?

    As someone who spent an entire comp-season as Lucio, wall-run should be used more. It provides more movement options and more importantly (with a team that dies a lot at least) you stay out of most enemy's crosshairs aimed at your teammates.

    Agree with the Roadhog alt pick, but not so sure about the rein. I've tried to do just that, and like you suggested at the end of the video...Rein's benefit really only works if your team stay with you and make use your shield. The team in the video (plus most people I play with) was all over...some went right, some left. Roadhog still #1 choice, but I'd go Zarya over Rein and try to get some bubbles onto Winston as he dives in. Plus Zarya with a bit of charge can do some work on dva.
    Nice work on the video! Looking forward to more of these.
