Ya know, I'm one of those that love seeing Chris' live streams (favorite still, the now deleted, 30th bday one). Ever since his and Pete's podcast has come to RUclips, it very much reminds me of those streams in the best of ways. The face cams absolutely make all the difference!
Just wanted to give some appreciation to you guys being on RUclips. Thank you two for everything you do 👍

Chris, don’t waste your time in lengthy responses to the nay-sayers.
The quality of your videos and the success of your channels speaks for itself. The hard work and dedication you put into your content really shows.
Are you qualified to have an opinion about life in Japan? Absolutely! Everyone can have an opinion. Is your opinion worth listening to? Over 3 million subscribers (and counting) say “Yes!”
So keep doing what you do, and don’t worry about the occasional negative comments by a handful of grumblers jealous of your success.
As a longtime follower, I look forward to your videos every day (especially the travel videos).
I dream of the day when I can travel to Japan and see these wonderful places and meet the wonderful people for myself.
Thank you for allowing me to live vicariously through your work.

There are cases where responses to nay-sayers are desirable, either when they have a large audience of drone-like followers that would become a nuisance, or when a reasonable response would convert someone to being an ally. Speaking as someone with fair typing skills and an affinity toward long-form content, the lengthiness is not necessarily a problem, and in my experience is preferred over not responding and thinking about it for longer than it would have taken to just respond and get it off my chest. That said, I agree with the sentiment however, that he need not overly worry about the negative personalities online, because there will always be a fresh spring of those popping up.

I used to be a manager at a well known pub chain in the UK which also operates a number of pubs within airports. The knives used in the kitchen at any of the airport locations were chained to the prep surfaces, and staff working there had to undergo thorough security checks before starting or finishing a shift. It's quite impressive how security and safety focused air travel is across the world.
I don't use Twitter much, but I am not surprised that someone decided to attack you, Chris.. There are always going to be bitter or misinformed people casting judgment upon others on social media. Perhaps this person was simply looking for easy exposure, who knows... As you said yourself, people who actually watch you and know you, know better!

I'd say Chris is qualified to speak on living in Japan in the same way a doctor is qualified to speak on a disease they've never been infected with, just because you are viewing something from a somewhat outside perspective doesn't mean you have no insight on the topic, Chris has more experience living in Japan than any of these people who are saying these awful things about him

    • @nicholasammon4790
      @nicholasammon4790 4 дня назад +5

I am sorry but just living somewhere does not give you insight into anything except the surface level. Let’s put it bluntly his Japanese about late elementary school level at best. He admits he does not read Japanese. He does not have academic study background in Japanese cultural studies or language or society. He admits to using Wikipedia for everything fact in his videos. He is aware of western media about Japan (example the “no press freedom comment”) but does not in fact read anything in Japanese about the issues he pronounces his “insights” about. Therefore his opinion is not nuanced nor in depth.
So let’s put it in a different context, say you have an immigrant to the US from any country who can’t speak very good English, who reads everything about US in his native language, makes pronouncements about understanding the US but never points to English or natives perspectives on his opinions because he can’t read them. This is your “qualified” RUclipsr

    • @user-hx7yz2sy9p
      @user-hx7yz2sy9p 4 дня назад +31

@@nicholasammon4790First of all, you are not sorry.
I have been watchin and listening to the podcast for many years and to say Chris has no insight and only a surface-level understanding is demonstrably false in every possible way.
He has been living in Japan for 12 years, documenting, interviewing, and thinking about the country. He is deeply embedded in the culture and connected with the people, especially during his time in rural Japan.
"His Japanese level is elementary school level at best."
No, it is not. If you had even the slightest understanding of Japanese, you would know that children in Japan can barely read kanji, much less talk about politics.
While Chris may have been slacking off on learning kanji, his comprehension and conversational skills are much better than those of an elementary school child.
He admits to using Wikipedia-so what?
That does not mean he gets all of his facts wrong. He puts himself out there, engages with locals, and genuinely cares about important issues making many documentaries and putting a lot of work and thought into them.
Your comment is utterly condescending and not constructive in any way. To say, "This is your 'qualified' RUclipsr" is very strange-if you think so, why are you watching?
Chris has done more for Japan and its culture than any other non japanese RUclipsr. Even if he occasionally makes mistakes, that does not mean he is unqualified to speak.
Since when do we need qualifications to share our opinions on podcasts? That would be mental. Given your superficial exposure to Chris, you are the least qualified person to judge him.
      You are simply being sour.

I don't think Chris would claim to be an expert in Japan. He documents his experiences living and travelling as a foreigner or on topics that interest him. His videos have been watched hundreds of millions of times. As for his Japanese, I am not in a position to judge, but I have seen videos on youtube where highly educated native Japanese speakers have complimented him. To me Chris comes across as a genuine, modest, talented film maker who works hard, takes risks and thoroughly deserves all his success.

@user-hx7yz2sy9p (youtube didn't post my last comment) read the guy's other comment he left by clicking on his profile pic, he's extremely misinformed, and his views on the abroad in japan channel seem pretty skewed.
According to him, chris won't say anything negative about japan or claim japanese nationality because "right-wing weaboo's" and Japanese nationalist racist will dogpile on him.
which doesn't make sense as chris has been pretty vocal about the things he dislikes about japan and the difficulties he's faced being a foreigner in japan.

Someone asked about food on the podcast, didn’t they? These days, sandwiches from Japanese convenience stores are quite famous, but if you’re open to trying traditional Japanese home-style cooking, I recommend "Yayoi-ken". It's a chain restaurant, but you can enjoy typical Japanese "teishoku" (set meals) at an affordable price. A teishoku usually includes rice, miso soup, pickles, and a main dish of either fish or meat prepared with home-style seasonings. Just a little tip from a Japanese person!

  • @elementneon

Regarding the first segment, about waking up and checking Twitter, I honestly think people see a title & a thumbnail and think of a comment based on that more than the content itself. The person Chris is mentioning did not even care so much as to check literally 90% of the reviews on the bar that say a typical visit to the bar ran them roughly $20-30, which for 2 or 3 drinks is quite reasonable. They just assumed that because the images of the drinks and the decor of the bar looked fancy that they would be overpaying.

Forget the gits Chris, just because you aren't Japanese, or don't work in a supermarket, it doesn't mean you aren't capable of commenting on your experiences of Japan. We once grounded 3 aircraft for a day as a person not involved in aircraft maint took a torch and left it in another building where he was looking for something....

It's rather weird to have people defend a country they've never lived in against somebody like Chris who's lived there for so long and has spoken with so many native people. I find it's usually anime fans who over-glorify a country that just don't even bother to watch the video and go ballistic over the idea that their fantasy isn't perfect or realistic.

And I understand the issues with television licensing. That being said, the two best scripted dramas I've seen in this past year were produced by NHK. From our perspective as Japanese citizens, NHK appears to be in a rather chaotic state at the moment. Of course, there have always been some excellent documentaries, and NHK remains particularly reliable during disaster coverage, offering more accurate reporting than other networks. However, when it comes to general news reporting, more and more Japanese people, across generations, feel that it lacks the objectivity expected of a public broadcaster. A recent example is the serious broadcasting error caused by a Chinese employee of a subcontractor for NHK's international service, which is just one case in point. There have also been reports promoting questionable Chinese e-commerce sites, raising concerns about the credibility of the news.

People are far too quick to pass judgment in absence of the facts nowadays. A reasoned response from Chris seems a fair thing to do. Still, it's unfortunate that he was put into that position.

I do like how the person who hatemailed Chris on Twitter said "he doesn't know what it's like to be a normal person [in Japan]!". Yeah, no shit Skippy, he's a British youtuber living in a place that is decidedly _not_ the UK doing what is (at least until very recently) an unusual job - he's obviously going to have a different perspective from the locals. Imagine if I got mad at every American who's ever been charmed or smitten with something about England, and angrily replied with "u dunt know wot its like 4 normul Binglebonglelandurs!" As a "normal" English person I'm going to have a rather different opinion (potentially positive or negative) of the country I was born in, than someone who arrived later who is inevitability bringing an outsiders perspective.
The level of arrogance it must take to accuse Chris of being privileged is beyond my comprehension.

I live in Kagoshima. There are things to do here. Unfortunately a lot of travel RUclipsrs tend to turn and burn. Maybe they are tired from their own mad pace by the time they get here. They get a video of the volcano and the streetcars and get back on the train. Or at least it looks that way because they show no content of value

Chris's comparison of Sakurajima in Kagoshima to the artificial volcano at DisneySea was a unique perspective. I’m a Japanese person living in central Japan, and when I traveled to Kyushu and saw Sakurajima and Kinko Bay from the plane, I was completely overwhelmed by the stunning scenery. Kyushu also has many unique sightseeing trains, making it well worth a visit.

I agree that you have to fight back, people who say "just ignore it", I get it, it is the most least confrontational, reasonable thing to do, but if the reasonable people shut up, what's left?... there you go.

There‘s one thing I find particularly amazing about this episode: Listening to Chris talking about how awesome it is to be in Kagoshima, then looking out of the hotel window with a smile on my face, seeing the lights of the city Chris just mentioned, nodding silently, knowing Sakurajima is just about ten kilometres away on the other side of Kagoshima Bay. What‘s even more amazing: The perfect view of the volcano I have from my hotel room during the day. 😎

That twitter guy seemed to be in envy of you and what you achieved. It was a subtly spiteful and quite a stupid post from him. Anyone with a functional brain would take anything with a salt of grain so attacking you personally and saying you don't represent everyday Japan does not contribute to anything besides, obviously, taking a shot at you. It is the usual twitter garbage.

I'm disappointed and performatively outraged that having now become a world famous author, and is recognised as the foremost experiencer of that one North Korean ballistic missile that one time, Chris - suddenly, almost violently, and with no warning or explanation - hasn't noticeably changed, except for the natural personal development that might be expected of a well rounded individual who has found success through hard work. Walkng around being all relateable and shit. Makes me sick.
