Hey Chris and Pete. I live in Japan for 25 years and here is a funny story from about 15 years ago.
I was taking the train home from work. I shared one bench with a younger woman and across sat a salary man half asleep. At the stop before my stop something happened I never forget in my life.
The train stopped and the doors opened. Passenger got off and on. The usual. Then the doors closed. And you know the doors closing can make a big bang sound, right? Bang, the salary man across from me woke up in surprise, watched out of the window realising “Holy, fuck. This is my stop!”
He stood up on the bench and opened the window. (The windows on the trains can only be opened half. So the hole is about 1m30 wide and 60cm high. )
Then he used the bench as a trampoline and perfectly in Bruce Lee fashion jumped out the window with his body in a horizontal position. Landing horizontally with a big smack on the station platform while the train already had started rolling out the station.
I looked at the younger woman next to me and she looked at me. We started laughing but did not exchange any words.
Btw the man stood up and walked away as far as I could see.
    Something I never will forget.
The kung fu master salary man.

Living in Japan since 2019. This summer was pure bs here around Tokyo and Chiba pref. Only this week began to drop to slightly under 30Celsius, last week every single day it was still 34. The heat came surprisingly late, at mid june, but it was constantly above 34 Celsius from 9am(!!!) since. AC-s wore down not only in many houses and apartment complexes, but in the shopping malls aswell in many places. Even the fan vests/jackets were barely enough to prevent heatstroke, while drinking constantly COLD ones. I work outside a lot for food delivering, but this year i skipped most of the lunchtimes at the summer, AND many of the dinnertimes too, because it was still above 30Celsius easily until 9pm, with 90%+ humidity. Got heatstroke once, and got near to it 2 times too. Summer in Japan is no joke, and anyone who living in a non-tropical or non-mediterrean climate, should straight up avoid it at all cost

That humidity and those temps sound insane. I live in the SW here in the U.S. but its a dry 115F every summer here. I would take that over 34c/90+ humidity any day. Stay strong my dood and get those electrolytes.

Regarding the Japanese taking pictures stereotype, on my parents' wedding day in the early 80s someone with the church approached my mom before the ceremony began and said there were a bunch of Japanese tourists in town who wanted to see an American wedding. My mom thought it was kind of fun, so she agreed and so while she was walking down the aisle a bunch of Japanese tourists in the back row were taking a ton of pictures with their huge cameras.

Just got back from Japan and my goodness I have never sweated this much in my life. I don’t know if I’ll be prepared when I move to Japan next years. The high heat plus humidity was the worst. 25degree weather early in the morning plus 85% humidity was not helping! I was in Fukuoka the only place in Japan that I visited which I hope the rest of Japan does it is add ac inside of their train stations. It made the heat a little more bearable

The first time I went to Japan was in August of 2013 because my friends wanted to visit the summer Comiket. We weren’t prepared. The short walk from our hostel to the train station was enough to drain me with sweat every day. My friends who went to Comiket had to wait in line outside to get in, and they were lucky they didn’t heatstroke. Props to the many vending machines for keeping us hydrated though.

I thought last summer was worse - this summer had quite a lot of days with thunderstorms - normally they just effect near the mountains but this year they came to the Tokyo area quite frequently. Best to avoid Japan in August and first half of September unless you are planning to spend most of your time in the mountains or in Hokkaido. Late September to early December and late March to early June probably the best times to visit weatherwise.
