    You can hear him running out of steam even before the end. I wonder if the little tap from Mark wasn’t just encouragement but, “Don’t try it.”

    I would rather listen to Kurt Young's voice crack all day, than to listen to the music of the world.

    There are a lot of people commenting here that have never sang Tenor in a SG group. I have sang in 3 regional groups for 20 years. (not comparing my level of expertise by any stretch, but I've been around a while) Things like this don't normally happen to most singers that know how to use their voices. However, when you come to that split second when you have to hit it or not even sing at all and you have a piece of phlem pop up on your vocal chords, this is what happens. It's easy to armchair quarterback. Speaking from experience, he should have got out of his mic, did a quick throat clearing push and then hit it again. If I had a dime every time I saw Danny do that........... That being said, I understand from people in the group at the time, this wasn't the only reason he was replaced. Matter of fact, I understand that Ernie almost didn't make it because of the high hard singing that was required. To his credit, he got some training and adjusted. Lucky guy!

    I've been a cathedral Quartet fan for years, since the late 60's-early 70's. However, I
    never knew about Kurt Young singing with them. Probably for the best that he didn't
    last very long. After Ernie came on board, they got a lot better again.

    Definitely not the worst tenor note I've heard from a major group. As another poster mentioned, I hate that many people will only remember Kurt for this one note. He actually has a nice voice.
    In my opinion though, this is just more evidence that most groups don't have a clue what a real tenor is supposed to sound like. And just because a note CAN be hit doesn't mean it SHOULD be hit.

    Friend i never heard this formation with Kurt Young before.....but, in fact, he dont hit the final note and his voice is more softly, more weak than the other sg tenors, what is more suitable for songs like "Im telling the world" and others that not demand strength tenors. For sure, Danny is a mark on Cathedrals road to glory, a parameter of how the sg tenor need to be, and, of course, Ernie Haase has his achieves to....

  • @grayja1
    @grayja1 15 лет назад +1

    Exactly Ernie is letting a whole new generation enjoy SG. Its almost as bad as the older generation thinking anyone who sang in a quartet like the cathedrals couldn't be saved and are tearing down Gods name by there performance... When really the question is are they Glorifing God... Yes they are.

    • @philgillfan
      @philgillfan 6 лет назад +1

      grayja1 I totally agree. I know someone who says they love some acts in one breath and then badmouths them in another for wanting to be paid just because they are in a church. This is their fulltime job and they have bills to pay. The wrong is when someone takes advantage moneywise. I read a book written by Glen and George and they seemed like genuinely Godly men. It hurts to see people say things like that.

    • @philgillfan
      @philgillfan 6 лет назад

      grayja1 And about the Ernie thing, this is what I wrote in a comment to someone that was tearing Ernie down: Who is to say how the Lord want's someone to dance? Like a godly man once said, what may seem flashy to some is someone else's baring of the soul. That's just how he praises the Lord. And if it brings just one more soul to the Lord, didn't he do his job? (It was easier to cut and paste)

    I absolutely plan to post the NN performances. I'm just not sure how long it will take me to get to them. The other two songs are "In The Depths Of The Sea" & "I've Just Started Living".
    BTW, I really enjoy the 2 Priority cassettes that I own that feature Kurt.

    But notice that Kurt does eventually hit that note at the end. Just missed it coming in. The fact that he found a way around hitting this note this way after this just shows he wasn't a bad singer.

    The "Gospel Jubilee" (GJ) that bubers2007 is referring to was a show on TNN in the early 1990's. I don't know that the Cats were ever on GJ with Kurt Young. I do have a video of them singing "This Old House" & 2 other songs with Kurt on Nashville Now (NN). GJ and NN were both on TNN, so maybe that's where the confusion came in.
    I'm pretty sure the NN performance was just a day or 2 before the Dove Awards that this is from. NN booked the Cats because they were already in town for the Doves.

    It doesn’t help that Kurt’s mic was hot too. Whoever mixed the show wasn’t paying attention.

    I agree that the audio mix on this is bad. Trust me, this is how bad it sounded on the live broadcast. I watched it live on TV and have watched the video several times since.
    Nothing has been edited or adjusted.

    Other than the last note he hit, I think Kurt aced the song. I personally preferred the lineup with Ernie a little more, but this guy is still a great tenor. I'm not going to diss Kurt for the high note because I can't get anywhere close to hitting it period.

  • @thequartetman
    @thequartetman 16 лет назад

    Emelton, I remember Garry talking about not wanting the Kingsmen job to be the one he got because he wasn't the type of tenor that they liked. However, he modified his voice and style to become one.

  • @volscot
    @volscot  16 лет назад

    Kurt sang with Priority before joining the Cats. They may have been a trio at one time, but they were a quartet on the two cassettes that I own. Your stylistic comparison to the Booths is accurate.

    None of the guys sound good on this clip and I remember it quite well. Wasn't Kurt's fault, it was the mix. When a singer can't here the quality of sound they need a lot of bad things can happen, even to the best. George sounds like he's pushing it. Did not know Kurt, but I hate it that he will be remembered for this one bad note. I liked his voice.

      Também achei muito estranho a apresentação do George Younce, achei que não estava 100%... parecia que estava alguma coisa errada e tapinha nas costas que o Kurt recebeu, já era um aviso do Mark que as coisas não estavam indo bem.

  • @TonyRush
    @TonyRush 16 лет назад +4

    In my opinion, the "screaming tenor" is a large reason why SGM has never become a mainstream genre of music (regardless of what the fans think).
    Andrea Bocelli is a natural tenor.
    Vince Gill is a natural tenor.
    Steve Perry is a natural tenor.
    David Phelps is a natural tenor.
    Heck, even Meat Loaf is a natural tenor.
    Men that sing in a shrill voice aren't tenors. They're just annoying. :)
    Tony Rush
    former pianist for the Anchormen (responsible for more screaming tenors than most other groups)

    • @4themusicman
      @4themusicman 4 года назад +1

      Completely. Agree. I know many professional musicians/singers that just can't stomach SG for that very reason. GVB and EHSS are about as far as they can handle because Ernie can hold his own and Gaither typically has quality tenors. This dude either didn't warm up properly or his nerves were getting to him because at 2:10 he cracked on "ain't" and again at 2:19 he cut short "longer". It was obvious he was headed for an epic fail. Feel badly for him because he did it on live television. But he seemed, at least on this night, out of his element.

    I have some old Statesmen live recordings with Rosey, and I've heard him miss a few. Everybody misses sometime. This was just a really bad concert to miss a note on. Also, I think Kurt's voice may just not have fit them at this time.

    Tony, Perry, Gill, Peter Cetera, Groban, Phelps types are lacking in SG. The GVB has had some. I loved the Funderbruk screaming sound. :) I hadn't heard ANY SG tenors until then who didn't sound like they weren't on helium. Hearing Funderburk nail the Db on this song on Jubilate '88 was radical to me back then. What passion and strength. The Jason Crabb of tenors I'd say. :)
    Bill Baize was great in the '70s. Murray has a nice smooth sound. Larnelle does too, but not SG. Hampton's good too.

    Continued:
    I do find myself liking some tenors I might not have as much before I got into SG. Ernie Haase (who at times has a nice sound) & Steve Ladd are two. I never got into Garry Sheppherd's voice (now there's a screaming tenor), but I loved him on The Judgement though. :)He was fun in the really high stuff he would scream. Booth does well. I'm sure I am missing some. :)

  • @carolnelson1126

    I just listened to this for the first time just now, I am SO thankful that Ernie replaced him. Although that guy has a good tenor voice, it overpowered the rest of the group, which when Ernie joined, he blended right in.

  • @brianrayburn2125

    Those who have never sang semi or professionally are quick to judge. I have seen many groups over the years and have heard the highest quality tenors voices crack at the wrong second. It has happened to me as well (NOT a professional but nonetheless embarrassing). Kurt was not a good fit with the group on stage and I think behind the scenes as well.

  • @DA-xh3tw
    @DA-xh3tw 5 лет назад +1

    Bad sound mix. George sounded like he was trying way too hard . Never liked the song anyway nor cared for George’s performance of it . Bad note for sure. Cathedrals hired him though and unfortunately had to part ways. Kurt wasn’t bad.. group should have known to make adjustments or picked a different style tenor.

      Robinhood179 probably thats why he didn't even recorded and soon Ernie Haase took his place... even Steve Lee stayed more time with Cathedrals than Kurt Young(well, Steve recorded 3 albums with them and was a good baritone after all)...

    • @pastorstevenridings
      @pastorstevenridings 6 лет назад +2

      Kurt was a fine vocalist but he was trying to carry songs recorded and staged by a much different tenor. If the Cats would've adjusted to his style and range he would've been a great fit. He can harmonize better than many tenors out there. However, he just wasn't a good fit for the Cats and the songs they staged/recorded with Danny.
