Great Video man👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼Thank you I have some pleco babies now and would definitely buy this Breeder Box...
Can I use it for angel fish too??
Take care stay safe
Alan
I have been using one for a few months now and love it! Also, when not in use for fry, it can be filled with plants or moss to enhance nitrate consumption.
Nice idea!
I really appreciate your down to earth and open education... Thanks for what you're doing.
I have them also. I also put a sponge in the output to stop from losing fry. I also put a fluval edge pre filter in the intake because the debris from the main tank was being sucked up into the breeder box.
Nice idea!
And it works as a less efficient sponge filter!
I really liked my breeder box but the first time I used it, all my guppy fry slipped over the waterfall, right into the waiting mouths of the other guppies. The sponge trick is great, just make sure not to restrict the flow and you are solid. Great tip, thanks man. The box is way better than setting up a grow out tank with heater, airflow, filtration, etc.
Thank you!
I know this video is old and you probably won't even see this comment but I have only been in the hobby for 6 years. Finally got one of my bucket list fish, multies, thanks to your beautiful videos on them. Anyway, now I have more fry than I know what to do with. So I've been able to sell some (and could absolutely sell more!) I'm in the OKC area and plenty of people want them. Problem is, I had such a hard time getting them out. I wish you would do a video on what to do with multi fry, any tips you might have on getting them out of the shells, anything. Would be so helpful to me!! Multies are highly sought after and none of the fish shops here get them often because they just don't ship well.
I will have to do a video on that!
I have either a medium or a large on the back of every tank. I put a piece of poret sponge or a prefilter sponge directly under/over the inlet and bio media in the bottom, under the slotted V shaped tray. I fill the rest with Pothos or Peace Lily and have a nice biological trickle filter. The sponge keeps out most of the detritus, the bio media have the slow trickle to hopefully get a complete nitrogen cycle, and the plants suck up nitrate. If I get accidental babies I suppose I can temporarily toss that stuff somewhere else and use the box for its intended purpose 😂
Thanks for another great video 🙏
Want to say this is a great video. I haven't tried the Marina HO breeder box but I have tried the Fluval HO breeder and ISTA IF-648 breeder box. By looking at the video Fluval and Marina look almost the same but very different in price. Take care.
Thank you!
I just picked up the large size at a recent swap meet and just keep it running since I've had some incidental breeding go on in a show tank with some julidochromis transcriptus and petricola. Works like a charm.
Good to hear!
A sponge from AquaClear 110 fits inside perfectly or will hold a large amount of poly-fill, if that helps any one visualize the available space inside the size large breeding box. They are very adjustable to fit on any aquarium, as thin as a glass rimless and even fit easily on my old Oceanic 125 (not much fits over that width of aquarium edge). I thought about using these to grow terrestrial plants such as peace lily, cherry tomatoes, butter lettuce, and so-on. These plants would enjoy the goldfish water, and maybe help make a dent in filtering. It would be a much cleaner look than using pond planter baskets.
I have a large one that I've been using for a while first I kept 2 male guppies there together for about half a year hanging on my 120 gallon south american severum tank then I have 2 colombian tetras breeding in there, then I didn't need it so I put a small later of sand and some javamoss and a very small bit of driftwood and I put about 10 blue cherry shrimp in there and they lived there for about 1 year and have some babies then I gave them away, now thinking of using it again for something it's pretty cool if you want to keep 1 or 2 small male guppies or a few cherry shrimp.
This box is also "Cat safe".
Both because of the lid with fasteners, and also due to it beeing a sturdy construction (it easily supports a curious cat, standing on it).
Thank you for this video! I ordered the box right after viewing it and now have around 40 Electric Blue Acura fry swimming in it. Mom and Dad Acara have had 3 previous batches of fry that all disappeared around 2-3 days of free swimming. This time I took about half their batch and hopefully will be able to raise them.
That is so cool to hear! Congrats! I hope they all turn out great. : -)
I also have this item...and yes...I love it. I had a sunburst lyre tail molly give birt to about 40 babies and it saved every one!
Good to hear!
Nice review Jason. Very well explained. These breeder boxes are inexpensive and they work great. Perfect for any fish room.
Glad you like them too!
With fish where the female is likely to get beaten up before she's ready to breed (bettas, Africans), try keeping her in the breeder box while you condition her with live foods. Then when she's fat with eggs, release her into the main tank with the male and monitor the activity. Breeder boxes also save you from having to flood a whole tank with food to reach all the fry that are scattered throughout the tank. With the box you can surround fry with food and minimize the total pollution in the tank.
Very good points!
I love breeder boxes... especially the HOB ones.
yeah the net breeder boxes they change the design and put suction cups on. I had to search all over and I ended up finding a place with 7 of the old design with metal on them, so I bought all of them
Thanks Jason. We will look into it. And yeah... aquarium suction cups, suck.
Fluval now sells this or imitates it. The biggest flaw I see is the rubberband can break easily while assembling, meaning you don't have a seal to fee in water. It also can pop up your lid too much if you have some aggressive jumping fish.
What is your opinion on placing the pregnant female in the box? I have one of the boxes with 2 compartments. One part is for the fish and the other for the eggs to full down into.
You can certainly do that.
Looks like a great tool. Is the large big enough to put a pair of barbs or kribs in for instance? I know they can get a little aggressive while mating.
I have the medium one and used it to great success for my guppies. Awesome product!
Very cool!
I like you said if the fish accidentally breed like
“Oops honey I just laid these eggs on accident. It’d be a shame if they were fertilized”
“Oops, looks like I accidentally fertilized those eggs you were talking about. I guess we’re parents now🤷🏼♂️”
Lol really cool breeder box though and good information as usual.
Nice : -)
Neat. On a side note, I think of the gourami fry that accidentally ended up in a holding jar for plants, survived there for 2 months unattended, and once rediscovered came back to become the queen of the tank (Floo the Flowerhorn). Seems to me a little plant matter in those boxes could be a really good thing. What do you think?
For sure!
Hey Jason... I kinda know the answer to this but i kinda don't. Do I have to put my clowns in the breeder box or is there a chance that when the eggs hatch a few of the fry might get pumped into the breeder box saving my clowns from being put in the box and never laying eggs in it anyway?
You'll have to eventually get the fry into the breeder box. There is a screen on the intake that prevents fish form getting in.
Great info! Just started working with guppies. Was going to set up another aquarium for fry but this will really help in the meantime. Thanks
I think it will definitely help.
Hi I know this is an old post but just wondering do these fit tanks with the glass lip just inside the rim inside inside the tank ??
I’m not sure?
I’m wondering if the throughput on this would be sufficient to use it as an external K1 media filter.
Thoughts?
Probably not - it is very low flow.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics that’s what I thought based on the video.
I have ordered one, as well as a small adjustable water pump to give better flow.
Worth a try!
Awesome video dude. You really sure do have some good info
Thank you! Appreciate you watching.
Should I worry about water changes on these? Or left over food ? Other than trying not to feed too much.
Water changes no because when you water change the tank it's just sucking in that water. I would try to remove uneaten food though.
What do you think GPH on that? I have it on my tank for pothos and was wondering if it's adequate.
For us with max air maybe 1-2gph?
Use mine all the time, have to agree best breeder box on the market
Makes life easy!
Great video was looking at breeder boxes. Thanks for helping me decided which one to get.
Hey Lori! Hope you enjoy it. : -)
This is a great product, I have enough fry tanks at the moment but if my females start going crazy and giving me more fry then I can handle, I will buy a few of these boxes for the added space like you say
They do come in handy. : -)
Looks like this product isn’t available online anymore. Do you know where I can get something similar to this in the large size???
There might be one made by Ziss?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics do you know the product info or have the link?
I use several of them!! Mostly for bn pleco fry but they are great
Glad to hear they are working for you too!
We have our first cichlid tank. My wife had them years ago, and I used to have a simple freshwater setup, but cichlids seem to be their own specialty..... We had some of those 'accidental' fry recently, and two of them survived and are big enough to take care of themselves now. We're pretty sure another female is holding. Our local pet store had the small version of the Marina tank, but she seemed pretty freaked out in there, so we let her back in the tank. You referenced grabbing the fry and putting them into the breeder tank, but what about putting mom in there before she lets go? Is that advisable or not? I really don't want to force them out, but I want to try to protect them too. Should we just keep a more watchful eye for the little swimmers?
We generally do one of two things. Take the holding females out and place her in a 10 gallon tank so she can spit the fry out when she is ready, or remove the fry from the female after a couple weeks of holding and place them into a breeder box or their own tank. Both work well. It might be hard to out a medium sized fish into a breeder box though (stressful). Good luck!
Hi, how does this affect the water temperature in the box
For the most part it is the same as they tank since it is tank water that is circulating through the box.
I have the breeder box...only problem is the it keeps my fishtank cover open...which makes water cold and fish and snails can escape. ..
Lflower1 Stars Ya, that can happen. I’ve been able to slide the lid back and use the plastic insert that comes with some lids in the front.
I use two of the medium sized to culture black worms
Very cool!
Thank you
Can you please tell me what size air pump should i use ?
Anything that would be sized for a 5 gallon and up should work just fine.
I use these. Highly recommended.
Brian Wirtz Glad you like them!
I usually keep fry in empty ice cream containers, but never really had many at a time. But this week I pulled Dario Dario fry and I found 17 of these little guys and now I wish I had one of these boxes
Congrats!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks :) I'm quite scared that they won't make it, supertiny fry - 21 now ^^
Looks like it could be converted into an air driven HOB filter pretty easily too. If you're into that kind of thing.
I suppose it could. : -)
My smallish tank has a lid because I have a cat. Can this breeder box still be used on my tank because of the lid?
Yes, but you have to push the lid back a little.
Excellent idea, thank you!!!
Yup I have one myself I love had success and not so success
I had one but the temperature in the breeder box was a bit cold. Which airpump do you think is good enough to provide this? Ps love your video's
schaapjes kudde Almost anything rated for a five gallon and up should work if the air line isn’t too long.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you! You are an Nice guy😁 i am from Holland btw
Buying one, I breed guppy’s a Coryadoras , this looks awesome.
I hope you enjoy it!
Great video 👍😉🙋
Thank you!
Great video. Thanks for the info😃
Thanks for watching!
I have 3 of the medium size, they work really well on the side of a 10 gallon.
Glad to hear they work well for you as well!
Could also use those to add a little extra filtration too
Absolutely!
Can I raise zebra danio fry in here until they grow large enough not to be eaten by adults?
It might be a little small for that, but then again, the fry are tiny too. It might be worth trying.
Would these work for baby axolotls?
I don't see why not - they have different sizes to fit just about any need.
great tool. i have two and love them!
Good to hear!
Great video... just what I wanted to see... thanks 👍
Thank you!
Has anyone used this for angel fry?
Is there an extra bottom so that fry are not eaten during birth
I don’t recall there being one?
The air thing tube on my breeder box is very slow
I guess it depends on your air pump and how much capacity it has?
I hate mine. I mean it works, but immediately found out how LOUD it was. With the air driven intake tube, I cant use it in my aquarium in my bedroom. Its just too loud.
That's not something I thought about since I have it in a fish room. I don't really hear it.
I have used that breeder box to house my plants so fish won't nib the roots
Interesting ...
Awesome Video Thanks for Sharing FishFam NJAE19
Know he said it already ,BUT !Don't use the mesh boxes ,asking for all the fry to get randomly eaten, during the night as that when the suction will likely come loose, its just preparing the table to dinner.
Great.
I just bought two large ones so when my Zebra Plecos spawn I can go them out. Fingers crossed.
I hope they do!
That can also serve as a hang on back filter haha
Yeah I grow Chaeto in it
Informative video… look a lot like bill burr
That's so funny. I JUST started using the same one past two weeks ^_^
I've been thinking about getting a small one for keeping Pothos & other plants.
That's awesome! : -)
kool share brotha
Thank you!
Its garbage when you have a lit build into your aquarium, in europe there are barely any tanks without a lit..
err, it looks like a HoB filter with no media & using air instead of a pump. :)
Doesn't look like it would work for rimless tanks.
your link is to Fluval Multi-Chamber Holding and Breeding Box, Large ...NOT the MARINA Fish Holding & Breeding Box, Hummmmm
Same thing - they must have changed the name?
Did you remember my channel 😛
Nice to hear from you again!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks man, you remembered my channel, it just made my day.😁😁
Not cheap enough for me, especially when I don't have an air pump already...
You can always get the ones that float - just watch them because they don't always float the way they are supposed to.
Biggest downside is the noise. That gurgling sound. Haha.
Good point. There is some noise when turned up.
