I live in the village only a few minutes from Murrays home, and often saw him out and about in real life. And he was a true gentleman to little kids who recognised him, old fashioned ladies first, holding doors open, and on a personal level, as being disabled and having mobility issues, he would step aside and give me an encouraging nod and smile.
For a world wide sports celebrity he was an unassuming, classic english gent in his local comunity, and never carried airs or graces. As a local figure, by god i will miss the man.

I remember at 13 I was having a horrid time, I had no friends, no motivation and no interest in anything. Then i randomly put on a grand prix. Think it was France in 95, there in 90 minutes I got hooked due to Murray Walkers enthusiasm .
25 years on, I am still hooked. I never met Murray Walker but he came across as a genuine, honest human being and in some ways helped me gain a passion for a sport that has not gone. As Martin says I wish we could just say Sir Murray and I really hope in Bahrain in 2 weeks we get an appreciation there.

  • @jameznash

What a great person. He enjoyed ever single aspect of the sport. The people, the engineers, the fans, EVERYONE. He loved passing his passion on to others.
I was always a big BTCC fan from very young - so for me, thats what i remember the most.
But also as a massive F1 fan and Motorbike fan - I love the fact he followed club level races - all the way up to the top.
He could spot a talented driver from 1000 miles away. Yet would travel the country to follow them and see how well they did every weekend.
He really is British Motorsport from club level to world champion. I will really miss him.
    Thank you Murray.

Oh man, "that's not the programme we have for you tonight" - almost verbatim how Steve Rider introduced the 'highlights' of Imola '94. Good touch, really conveys the gravity of Murray's passing. So sad, he was so unerringly joyful.

That brought a tear to my eye. Thank you gentlemen for a very sensitive tribute that resonated perfectly with my memories of the sport from 1981 onwards in NZ then much later in the UK, with Murray Walker as the voice of the sport and the entire genre in the English language.

I later moved to Switzerland in the early 2000s and enjoyed a similar history with Heinz Prüller on Austrian commentary on ORF in German (because of course the English commentary was not available across 194 cable channels in 18 languages!). Thank you Murray and Heinz for helping me improve both my English and my German!

He deserved SIR honour more than Lewis did.
Also I'm in my 20s so ofc I didn't experience him live but Martin & Ted you guys did Murray justice. R. I. P MURRAY ❤️

Great tribute by two great communicators of F1. A giant of the sport and the first voice I heard from a place called Silverstone as a 7 year old boy in 1994 watching my first ever British GP.

He is 100% the reason I'm into F1. I loved him for his exuberance, and the most phenomenal commentators curse in history: "Surely nothing can stop him now... His engine's exploded". What a star

One thing I’d love to see, is at the start of the first race of this season, instead of “It’s lights out and away we go” They use a clip of Murray shouting “GO, GO, GO!” I feel like that would be a fitting and very welcome tribute.

Ted's Ayrton impersonation 😆, I was only 14 when Damon Hill became WDC, and I still have a smile when I watch Murray stopping him after the podium at the bottom of the stairs in Suzuka, putting his hands on Damon's shoulders, "Damon Hill, World champion......" such a personalised chap, and he was just as excited when Micheal Schumacher won in 2000, "YESSSSS!".
Great tribute Ted, Martin and SKY, thank you, RIP Murray, you will be sadly missed.

Remember Murray from my first watching GP in early 80s and watched nearly every race he commented and let us not forget has a golden brick from the Indy 500 track which has very rarely given to those not part of that race

When I was 10 years old and trying to watch as much racing as I could find on Canadian and U.S. TV it was the BBC feed that we got in Canada with Murray and James that really stood out. U.S. TV commentators were boring, Murray and James were hilarious, even if the races were boring they were awesome.

I first heard Murray & Hunt commentating when Gilles hit the scene. neither Villeneuve nor any other drivers would have been so great without Sir Murray's involvement.
