He was great man and F1 commentator. I didn't realize he served his country until this interview. Everyone should respect and admire him for his service. God bless him!
Also his involvement and part ownership of an Indycar team. I used to like watching his show to see the diverse guest list and crazy stunts/gimmicks they'd do. Two I remember well were dropping things from the roof of the building to see what would happen to them when they hit the road, the fluorescent light tubes smashed but stayed in a straight stick pattern after smashing, so from the roof it looked like a bunch of white toothpicks laying scattered below. The other was a massive catapult which they put pumpkins in one at a time and fired it to see how far down the street they'd go. He's had Sebastian Vettel, David Coulthard, Juan Pablo Montoya, Eddie Irvine, Murray Walker, Jacques Villeneuve, Alex Zanardi and maybe even more of F1's personalities on his show 😎
I loved listening to the late Murray Walker as a kid. I found his enthusiasm infectious and his interactions with the drivers funny, genuine and endearing. Rest in peace.
This is something I haven't heard mentioned much. His commentary gave the F1 97 era PSX / PC games a whole different sound concept. His style even matches the clunky way it worked in game back then
I first heard his voice in Formula One 2001 on PS2. I didn’t watch F1 in my elementary school days, so I really didn’t know anything about it. Both that game and F1 2000 on PS1 were gifts from my dad, as he was somewhat interested in the sport.
*The greatest commentator in history of ANY sport, and don't you even DARE to disagree with ME!* Seriously though, the man was one of a kind, when he was forcibly retired it was for me almost like another unnecessary F1 driver fatality, his voice sounded like the language of the F1 engines if they could have found a way of communicating with us.
A brilliant commentator and a genuinely lovely man. He made F1 captivating and exciting for so many people and his voice covered so many memorable races. We hope he's found peace ✌ wherever he's chilling. Thanks for the entertainment Mr Walker ❤ 😊
I miss Murray. His was THE voice of motorsport for me growing up, especially F1. Always entertaining, if not always entirely accurate! A lovely man and a gentleman too. RIP Murray, from a big fan.
That was nicely done: Letterman is moving on blah blah - and one more from Murray that is a journo and presenter right there. I see the game, I watch the game, I AM the game. To Murray Walker, voice of a generation
I still watch the old races with Murray and James. The dynamic between them is unique. Murray is keeping the pace and form and James is spicing it up with his personal reflections. They really made watching F1 better. And that was during the golden F1 years.
As a Xennial PS1 generation, Murray Walker was a huge part of my growing up. "I cannot believe this, he's actually driving round the track the wrong way" 😂😂😂😂
If every country put forward one person to represent the very best of themselves. I would want either David Attenborough or Murray Walker representing England.
I had always been familiar with the Brazilian pronunciation of "ah-EER-ton", so when I recently started watching old F1 broadcasts for the first time, I was amused by Walker's "EHR-ton". And then I watched that 1994 broadcast, and immediately noticed that Walker had switched, but I didn't know that he then switched back after that! It is also ironic that the name Ayrton is of English origin, so arguably "EHR-ton" is correct and the Brazilians corrupted it.
RIP murray... absolute legend! i'm so grateful to have gotten to watch murray's live F1 broadcasts
i still watch the old F1 races
@@thetruecrazysyrupguy can't beat murray enthusiastically yelling IT'S HAKKINEN as a glorious V10 screams past
I like the fact the audience respect him and clap. Then hear he served and clap with even more respect. What a great man he was
He was great man and F1 commentator. I didn't realize he served his country until this interview. Everyone should respect and admire him for his service. God bless him!
@ 8:31 you can see just how touched he was by the audience's reaction.
I'm not a fan of Letterman but I do respect that he is a fan of motorsport and brought people from the motorsports world into his show like Murray.
Also his involvement and part ownership of an Indycar team.

So weird to hear Murray say "Michael Schumacher five-time world champion"
Yeh Murray Walker idiot didn’t even get it right 😂
But that’s what he was at the time
Actually it isn't
Turned 80 two weeks later! We were lucky to have him around for so long.
ayrton senna died 24 hours after that conversation with murra sadly. Two greats, may they RIP
Murray will forever be THE voice of formula one, forever sorely missed.
Growing up with Murray was epic, him on the f1, John motson on the football and Peter allis on the golf - ultimate trifecta of commentary
Geoffrey Boycott raging on the cricket commentary too
Bill McLaren on rugby union.
Whispering Ted Lowe for snooker
I loved listening to the late Murray Walker as a kid. I found his enthusiasm infectious and his interactions with the drivers funny, genuine and endearing. Rest in peace.
"the late Murray Walker"
... it's even painful just to read that :(
Murray was a national treasure to us Brits! 👍🇬🇧 RIP Murray.
I'm Irish . He was a national treasure to me too .
He was 78 at the time. F1 kept him going and long after he retired he would watch every race at his home with his excitement.
Letterman always let rip if he feels the guest was boring or disappointing. Here you can feel he really does like Murray and it's a good atmosphere.
The last question about Senna shows that Letterman was (and is) not only a fan of the Brazilian driver, but F1. Murray will be missed.
R.I.P. Murray Walker. My first introduction to him was through the early Formula 1 video games.
This is something I haven't heard mentioned much.

No one to disagree. What you stating is facts
I disagree
His voice was definitely in tune with the engines lol. You miss his commentary even now.
"I should imagine the heat in that car is unimaginable." Murray Walker the voice of Sunday afternoon 🏎
So cool to see two absolute legends of TV just chatting like two old mates.

Thanks for this, and thanks to Letterman for conducting a nice respectful interview with our boy.
Many thanks Don from Wales, UK.
Cheers from Dallas Texas
What a lovely man Mr Murray Walker was. Rest well good Sir.
Thanks for sharing. I lived in the UK for thirty years and he was always a pleasure to see in action. He was the voice of F1.
Top bloke Murray. Can remember always hearing his voice on a Sunday in the 90s
What a legend! I loved watching F1 on TSN here in Canada just to hear his commentary! I still do to this day!
sadly, no longer with us, we lost a true legend when he saw his final checkered flag. R.I.P Murray 😢
Thanks for everything, Murray. RIP!

Thanks Don, it was really nice to hear this interview.
Murray was a great man. Americans won’t ever realise the impact a commentator had on a sport. A true giant of a man
What a pleasure it is to hear Murry recall old times.
Murray and Martin. Can't think of F1 without them.
Fantastic interview this
Fantastic man and certainly won’t be another like him

Great interview rip Murray Walker
Murray Walker died at 97 years old a couple of of years ago . Bless his memory .
Missed dearly by so many.
I miss Murray a great deal, THE voice of F1 and no one will come near!
So glad Letterman allowed him to speak
It’s with great sadness that Murray Walker is no longer with us he will be desperately missed by millions of fans who are always there to support him
Thank you for the upload, Don. Greatly appreciated.
God bless you Murray...Rest In Peace. Loved your F1 commentary… Didn't realize you served in World War II. Thank you for your service.
Thanks again for posting this, Don!

Very good. Thanks
Letterman is a man of racing, obviously he wanted to hear Murray, he never interrupted.
A bit over the top but as a watcher of Murray since about 1981, he was the best racing Commentator I have seen. The current BBC team are just bad.
Legend.
Pure class.
It just dawned on me how perfectly i understood the Murrayisms. There is a distinction to whats being said to that of whats being heard.
RIP Murray Walker, F1 would not be what it is today, if not for his unique voice and talent.
Rest in peace Murray. What an amazing life he had.
Simply the best
That weekend Ayrton spoke to Murray about his name was the one he sadly passed away on.
R.I.P. Ayrton Senna da Silva

What a man, RIP Murray
Beautiful.

"I cannot believe this, he's actually driving round the track the wrong way" 😂😂😂😂
I’ve a lump in my throat as I watch this show
Americans loved him too.
He was 97... That's 3/10th's short of 100 lol
👍😎🏁
Master at his game. RIP Mr Walker.
RIP Murray Walker 1923-2021
Murray Walker was just the best
I have to say, Murray’s comments about Indianapolis in F1 being a giant success, aged like milk
Well, who could forsee that?
No one could have predicted the 2005 farce
Rest in peace, Murray. Thank you for your service in WW2 for our once great country. God bless.
Our country is still great Ted, just not as great as it once was. People like Murray made it greater.
Lovely man
Thanks, Don.
What a great man.
Only finding out In 2021, good old Murry was on Letterman???!!!🙂👍
we lost more than a man with the passing of Murray. I am still choking up thinking that he is gone.
It’s a pity there was nobody on the show staff to tell the band to play “The Chain” as the entrance music.
RIP, Murray Walker ( October 1923 - March 2021 ). Legendary Formula 1 commentator.
Murray also worked calling Grand Prix motorcycle racing back in the 80's. He will be missed.
And BTCC too

I would have guessed the FW14B.
Fair play to Letterman, he knows his motor racing.
Happy 100th birthday Murray
2 legends ❤
He’s probably the only one who’s sitting the right way on the show.
A shame letterman didn’t play clips of him saying the weird things instead of reading them. Much funnier.
Would have taken too much time to set up.
More likely Bernie wouldn't have given Letterman the footage for free.
footage costs money
My favorite Murray Walker: (two cars collide) “that’s fantastic!”
Murry did the old Psygnosis F1 games on playstation one. Loved him and F1 ever since.
Yeah did like his F1 1999 on the ps1...
"You're right there, Murray!"
God speed Murray

He really deserved a knighthood
He was the British John Madden

look at his little face!

Perhaps because they're sad that he's dead
