I doubt it is though, as the strategy seems to be to try and downtalk the reality of how (un)competitive f1 is, once one team produces a signifiicantly superior car to the others.
Hard to believe that Liberty, Formula One Limited & the teams themselves accept the sub-standard & dated yawnfest output of Sky F1 as the way to broadcast & represent their sport...

They've levelled the coverage into something that they could sell. Lots of "content" not much real action.
James was the simply the perfect foil for Murray; they could make even the most boring race worth watching. I’m so glad that I got to listen to them season after season growing up. It was never the same after James went to the commentary box in the sky. (No offence to Dr Jonathan Palmer). Murray was great, but James made him better.
It's why Eurosport's coverage was the top drawer for me because Palmer just sounded like a muffled parrot next to Murray. There needed to be that contrast in tones to make it work.
I could listen to Murray and James talk F1 all night. Those two guys were brilliant! James was taken way too young and I missed his input during the races. Great video and I will save the video and watch it to remind myself how presenters should be like
Totally agree. I u tube watched recently the pre amble to the 1993 British Grand Prix. It was concise , informative, interesting and leagues better than the current Sky stuff.
Murray and James were perfect. If the race was a bit boring, they would spark off of each other, and if it was a good race, it was pure entertainment. I miss both.
I've been looking for this for decades!! I remember when this was shown on Sunday Grandstand a week or so before the 1992 season began. Fantastic discussion from these two legends of motorsport.
He is great to listen to here, I would quite happily listen to him talking like this for hours. Very articulate, and presented the sport's intrigue and technical aspects in a quite accessible but also very in-depth way.
I was blessed to be watching the F1 series when these two broadcasting Goliath’s were educating and entertaining us with their F1 knowledge and enthusiasm. We’ve never had the like since and new fans of the sports series have been starved of this brilliance.
This is so engaging to watch these two icons of Motor Racing discussing the then forthcoming 1992 season. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and James's logic is understandable re the McLaren/Williams 91 conclusion and prospect of 92, yet as we know, Nigel dominated much of the 1992 season with a car Williams developed further. I take exception to James stating Mansell threw his previous title challenges away. 86 - That was clearly a tyre failure in Adelaide. 87 - Yes, that was driver error at Suzuka. However, I understood from Williams at the time of the 91 title challenge end at Suzuka, Mansell's break pedal failed on the first corner, hence why he went off. The era and these two guys was for me, the true golden period of F1. Mansell, Senna, Prost, Piquet and Schumacher. The screaming engines, the off track events and arguments and dear Murray, so dearly missed. I agree with one of the comments on here re the comparison with today's Sky coverage. It is more indepth, but why so many women commentators? Where have all the ex drivers gone who can offer and relate from experience, so very much more. Martin Brundle is the only one left for me who, as Murray's pupil years ago, is an excellent and knowledgeable commentator. The rest are box ticking reasons which result in a lesser experience for the viewer. I'd love to hear these two discussing today's grid. Max, Carlos, Charles, Sergio, Lando, George, Fernando etc. Perhaps they are up there watching and commentating still. God bless them both.

So interesting to look back at these discussions. I’d been watching F1 for years back then, and to revisit now is quite fun. Much has changed and much the same. RIP James and Murray.
Two absolute legends and a great watch. I think they both called the 1992 Champion correctly with Mansell really. Murray at chuffed bursting point when James in a roundabout way after stating Senna basically said it's Mansell's if he wants it. A coming of age for Scumacher that season, they both obviously recognised there was a very special driver in the midst of F1 coming through just maybe not quite in that season with Benetton..it happened though. Quality viewing.

Love this. Back when F1 was about raw power and had characters all over the grid. I still enjoy F1 now but it's just not the same as it was in the 90's.
Looking back just hurts,, everything was better in the 90s I swear,, Music,,Movies,, sports,, life in general,,, I mean a man could work at a factory and still be able to buy a home,, have a nice car and go on a vacation once a year… Now, the middle class is dying… Don’t look back it just hurts just try and get by and find happiness when you can…
What a treat, thanks for sharing. I regularly go through old F1 races, one of the main reasons is to listen to James. He was spot on about so many things and of course his no nonsense style was always fun to hear.
Oh how I miss Murray Walkers commentaries 😢 he and James Hunt made F1 so interesting, especially Murray with the way he expressed himself every time Prost and Senna collided and when Jancarno fisichella got caught in a fire in the pits and many more. I've got a dvd of Murray's f1 favourites and he was very emotional when talking about Ayrton, Nigel Mansell, Nikki Lauda, Stirling moss and other F1 greats and there was also a pizza hut clip of him in a restaurant with Damon Hill while he was eating a pizza and his commentary in this advert was hilarious 😂😂😂😂😂 rip Murray ❤
Around the same time James Hunt & Murray Walker sat down for this chat, Alain Prost & Frank Williams would have sat down for their little chat, signing Prost for 1993 but not telling Mansell until after he won the championship.
Two intelligent, beautifully spoken, understatedly wonderful F1 broadcasters. God I miss this. From this to to high-pitched excited children masquerading as broadcasters- Croft, Herbert, Brooks and Pinkham. What a fall from grace. Only Brundle and Chandhok (underrated) possess any of the quality of these two great men of yesteryear.
I miss these convos. Jordan were the joker in the pack, but that awful Yamaha V12 really put them back. The real joker in the pack that year was Lotus, who got a good engine (the Ford HB) and the 107 chassis, designed by Chris Murphy was excellent. The other nice surprises of the season were Tyrrell, who always produced a good chassis, and got a light, but powerful V10 Ilmor engine, and De Cesaris was very competent. The other surprise was Footwork, who got a lovely Mugen unit in the back of a heavy, but reliable chassis. Michele Alboreto did an excellent job, finishing 14 of the 16 races, even if Aguri Suzuki seemed unsettled all year.
James 1) entirely correct that Mansell squandered 3 WDCs before 92 and 2) completely wrong to think Williams and McLaren would be competitive in 92: FW14B remains one of the most dominant cars in F1 history and only the current Red Bull and MP4-4 are close
I'm actually too young. But these are men who have shaped the image of an Englishman for me, true gentlemen, a great conversational culture. I could listen to these conversations for hours. Much respect and appreciation for my English neighbors. Love from Germany
Murray Walker is one of the greatest tv sport commentators ever , jointly with Vincent Scully ( CBS, USA baseball) and Adriano De Zan ( Rai , Italy , Cycling)
He’s absolutely correct. Mansell was my idol growing up and I always thought how unlucky he was. But I’m 42 now and think that Mansell is both the most underrated and overrated champion. He had the best car 4 times but won the WDC once. When Prost and Senna won championships when they didn’t have the best car sometimes. He also went to Indy in 93 because he didn’t want to race Prost in the same car for fear of losing. But the sad thing is in the active car, everyone one in the know said that no one ( including Senna ) could have beaten him in the active car.
@@ab8jeh No. Prost vito Senna. Prost was actually accepted equal status with Mansell. But because Prost got the better of Mansell when they were teammates in Ferrari. He was afraid deep down that it would happen again. He started demanding ridiculous demands in his contract like wanting 4 hotel rooms and silly stuff like that. Then played the poor old him being forced out of Williams because of Prost when that wasn’t the case. According to Patrick Head that’s why they didn’t sign him for 95 as they didn’t want problems with him. He was notoriously difficult at times, like in 87 they wanted him to test the active car and he told them no. So Piquet was flying from Brazil to England every week to test it. Then when he raced it at Monza he won. Then Mansell started complaining in the press how the team favoured Piquet and gave him No1 status etc. He was basically a drama queen. Great driver though and still my favourite as a driver. But as a person no.
No James, the fw14 was a semi automatic design from the ground up, there was no option of converting it to manual not even manual sequential. That would have required an all new car or bringing back the fw13
This is from around the time I first got into F1 and I would have been about seven or eight. I was too young to appreciate just how good of a pairing Murray and James were as he’d passed away only a year or so later and can barely remember their commentaries from the time. You can see how James is actually a highly intelligent and articulate guy with very considered (but very forthright) opinions. Almost like he had two completely different personalities compared to his legendary weed-smoking, drinking and womanizing. Very interesting guy. I still think he was deeply wrong blaming Riccardo Patrese for the accident that killed Ronnie Peterson for all those years, but having to help pull one of your best friends out of a burning racing car after an accident you were involved in is going to leave some mental scars, so I can kind of forgive him for that.
I'm assuming that Alesi and Capelli perched on the tyres of the Ferrari is the 'car launch' of the time. I'm not sure I agree with James that Mansell 'chucked away' those championships. It's interesting hearing their views on Schumacher.

Just outstanding. The type of highly intelligent discussion on sports that's largely absent in the States. Listening, I remember why F1 so captured my imagination when I was first exposed to it in the early nineties. It's brought about many years of 4:00 am wake up calls on Sunday mornings - lol - but I wouldn't have it any other way.
I wouldn’t agree it was “way off” 😉 they predicted Williams and McLaren would be strongest, followed by Ferrari and Benetton. They recognised the immense talent of Schumi and predicted Nigel would be champion if he could step up.
Although the FW14 was a very strong package & capable of winning a championship, nobody could predict the impact of the FW14b with it's active suspension & traction control.
@@BJWT1047 I mostly meant their assessment that it would be another close battle between Williams and McLaren. Their tune changed substantially after the first testing sessions of 92.
they don"t know that the active suspension of Williams was going to cancel competition in 1992 I saw the race at Spa (1st of Schumacher) and Mansell was already worldchampion
Quite harsh of James to say that Mansell's mistakes cost him the title beyond the reliability problems - yes he crashed in Japan but the championship was almost gone by then. The only other brainfade he had was Canada but even then you could make a case that the car shouldn't be so fragile. Mechanical issues and wheel nuts cost him at least 40 points that season
I have to say I disagree with James saying Mansell "choked" or "threw away" 3 world titles - especiallly 86 and 87 - he deserved to win both of those - it was hardly his fault that he had the tyre blow out in Adelaide in 86 and it was car failures in 87 that cost him that year
Prost totally deserved 86 - one of the greatest WC performances of all time! Mansell lost out in Mexico by stalling before Adelaide. Prost would have cakewalked 86 in that Williams.
@@brendanbrown3100 I would not agree. Second Mclaren was poorly , scandalously prepared in both 1985 and 1986 . It was a one man team in those years . Williams had a lot of challenges , no team boss , two great drivers ,and more reliability issues than Mclaren , at least one Mclaren . However , in some capacity , due to Rosberg not being a challenge in terms of points , Prost managed to have an almost error free year and win .
A bit rich Hunt pontificating over Prost ( truly one of the greats ) - particularly when the Monza 1978 crash is recalled. Murray was on record continually dealing with Hunt’s claims that Patrese was to blame whereas the photographic evidence eventually cleared Patrese. 🤔
I didnt realise Mansell blew his own tyre in 86 or forgot to attach a wheelnut himself in 91... yes he was chasing in Japan but for Hunt to say he threw 3 championships away?? Hmmm...
Miss their commentary but Hunt is plain wrong saying Mansell threw away 3 championships. 86 his tyre blew. 87 he missed last two races and 91, Canada gearbox broke, electrics in Spa while leading, Portugal wheel fell off while leading. So three wins due to car. The only two races he performed badly were Mexico 91. Second. Behind Patrese and you could argue going off at Suzuka 91 but he was pushing Senna like mad. Blamed a long brake pedal. It was an epic season though. Last time a V12 won the championship.
Hmm. In Mexico 86 he somehow didn't select first gear and drive away from the start, and he made an impetuous move in Brazil which cost him a likely win. In 87 he tried to pass Senna on the outside at Spa and ended his race even though Senna was on the kerbs trying to avoid him - another lost win, and of course he ended his campaign with that huge crash at Suzuka. In 91 he threw it off in Japan in a completely unforced error, and wasn't that the year he accidentally shut his car off on the last lap and handed it to Piquet? Of course you can play this narrative game forever - the misfortunes and unreliability you cite did happen and you can pretend they're the only reasons he failed, but unreliability and misfortunes were endemic in that period and were happening to all the drivers. Big picture, I think Hunt is exactly right - in 86, 87 and 91 Mansell had the outright best car on the grid and threw it away either through errors or squabbling with Piquet to let other drivers steal the WDC from him. It took FW14B - arguably the most dominant F1 car of all time, before he could get his single WDC.
Patrese wasn't bad? He didn't like active suspension, he didn't know how to handle active suspension, but he still won races and took comfortable second place in the championship. Nobody ever expected him to fight Mansell.
He did his job as a number 2 driver, won a race, 2nd in the standings with a young Michael Schumacher in his 1st full year 3rd and Ayrton Senna 4th. Yes the car was extremely dominant, but all you can ask is him bringing it home behind his teammate and keeping the other 2 juggernauts off that 2nd spot.

I don't see having a tyre explode on him was his fault but he's right on the other two

He’s absolutely correct. Mansell was my idol growing up and I always thought how unlucky he was. But I’m 42 now and think that Mansell is both the most underrated and overrated champion. He had the best car 4 times but won the WDC once. When Prost and Senna won championships when they didn’t have the best car sometimes. He also went to Indy in 93 because he didn’t want to race Prost in the same car for fear of losing. But the sad thing is in the active car, everyone one in the know said that no one ( including Senna ) could have beaten him in the active car.

@@ab8jeh No. Prost vito Senna. Prost was actually accepted equal status with Mansell. But because Prost got the better of Mansell when they were teammates in Ferrari. He was afraid deep down that it would happen again. He started demanding ridiculous demands in his contract like wanting 4 hotel rooms and silly stuff like that. Then played the poor old him being forced out of Williams because of Prost when that wasn’t the case. According to Patrick Head that’s why they didn’t sign him for 95 as they didn’t want problems with him. He was notoriously difficult at times, like in 87 they wanted him to test the active car and he told them no. So Piquet was flying from Brazil to England every week to test it. Then when he raced it at Monza he won. Then Mansell started complaining in the press how the team favoured Piquet and gave him No1 status etc. He was basically a drama queen. Great driver though and still my favourite as a driver. But as a person no.

No James, the fw14 was a semi automatic design from the ground up, there was no option of converting it to manual not even manual sequential. That would have required an all new car or bringing back the fw13
This is from around the time I first got into F1 and I would have been about seven or eight. I was too young to appreciate just how good of a pairing Murray and James were as he’d passed away only a year or so later and can barely remember their commentaries from the time.
You can see how James is actually a highly intelligent and articulate guy with very considered (but very forthright) opinions. Almost like he had two completely different personalities compared to his legendary weed-smoking, drinking and womanizing. Very interesting guy.
I still think he was deeply wrong blaming Riccardo Patrese for the accident that killed Ronnie Peterson for all those years, but having to help pull one of your best friends out of a burning racing car after an accident you were involved in is going to leave some mental scars, so I can kind of forgive him for that.

Just outstanding. The type of highly intelligent discussion on sports that's largely absent in the States. Listening, I remember why F1 so captured my imagination when I was first exposed to it in the early nineties. It's brought about many years of 4:00 am wake up calls on Sunday mornings - lol - but I wouldn't have it any other way.

I always enjoyed Murray and James behind the mic. They were both way off on their 92 predictions here. Williams was going to lambast McLaren in 92.
I wouldn’t agree it was “way off” 😉 they predicted Williams and McLaren would be strongest, followed by Ferrari and Benetton.
They recognised the immense talent of Schumi and predicted Nigel would be champion if he could step up.
Although the FW14 was a very strong package & capable of winning a championship, nobody could predict the impact of the FW14b with it's active suspension & traction control.

Amazing listening to this, then watching Channel 4 coverage with Steve Jones trying to be hilarious but actually being awkward.
Quite harsh of James to say that Mansell's mistakes cost him the title beyond the reliability problems - yes he crashed in Japan but the championship was almost gone by then. The only other brainfade he had was Canada but even then you could make a case that the car shouldn't be so fragile. Mechanical issues and wheel nuts cost him at least 40 points that season

I have to say I disagree with James saying Mansell "choked" or "threw away" 3 world titles - especiallly 86 and 87 - he deserved to win both of those - it was hardly his fault that he had the tyre blow out in Adelaide in 86 and it was car failures in 87 that cost him that year
Prost totally deserved 86 - one of the greatest WC performances of all time! Mansell lost out in Mexico by stalling before Adelaide. Prost would have cakewalked 86 in that Williams.
Mansell choked in Mexico 1986 , had luck in Belgium 86, had cramps in Detroit 86 , poor preparation . Prost won fair and square .

@@brendanbrown3100 I would not agree. Second Mclaren was poorly , scandalously prepared in both 1985 and 1986 . It was a one man team in those years . Williams had a lot of challenges , no team boss , two great drivers ,and more reliability issues than Mclaren , at least one Mclaren . However , in some capacity , due to Rosberg not being a challenge in terms of points , Prost managed to have an almost error free year and win .

A bit rich Hunt pontificating over Prost ( truly one of the greats ) - particularly when the Monza 1978 crash is recalled. Murray was on record continually dealing with Hunt’s claims that Patrese was to blame whereas the photographic evidence eventually cleared Patrese. 🤔

Miss their commentary but Hunt is plain wrong saying Mansell threw away 3 championships. 86 his tyre blew. 87 he missed last two races and 91, Canada gearbox broke, electrics in Spa while leading, Portugal wheel fell off while leading. So three wins due to car. The only two races he performed badly were Mexico 91. Second. Behind Patrese and you could argue going off at Suzuka 91 but he was pushing Senna like mad. Blamed a long brake pedal. It was an epic season though. Last time a V12 won the championship.
Hmm. In Mexico 86 he somehow didn't select first gear and drive away from the start, and he made an impetuous move in Brazil which cost him a likely win. In 87 he tried to pass Senna on the outside at Spa and ended his race even though Senna was on the kerbs trying to avoid him - another lost win, and of course he ended his campaign with that huge crash at Suzuka. In 91 he threw it off in Japan in a completely unforced error, and wasn't that the year he accidentally shut his car off on the last lap and handed it to Piquet? Of course you can play this narrative game forever - the misfortunes and unreliability you cite did happen and you can pretend they're the only reasons he failed, but unreliability and misfortunes were endemic in that period and were happening to all the drivers. Big picture, I think Hunt is exactly right - in 86, 87 and 91 Mansell had the outright best car on the grid and threw it away either through errors or squabbling with Piquet to let other drivers steal the WDC from him. It took FW14B - arguably the most dominant F1 car of all time, before he could get his single WDC.
At Canada 91 he was waving to the crowd and let the engine revs drop too low and stalled it.

Patrese wasn't bad? He didn't like active suspension, he didn't know how to handle active suspension, but he still won races and took comfortable second place in the championship. Nobody ever expected him to fight Mansell.
He did his job as a number 2 driver, won a race, 2nd in the standings with a young Michael Schumacher in his 1st full year 3rd and Ayrton Senna 4th. Yes the car was extremely dominant, but all you can ask is him bringing it home behind his teammate and keeping the other 2 juggernauts off that 2nd spot.
