Apart from his behavior over the years in general, the last straw for many of them was when he intentionally crashed at Suzuka T1 in 1990, with over 20 cars behind him all loaded up with fuel. So many people could have died.

That really was one pig of a car. Hakkinen still took two 2nd places with it. Could have taken one or two wins but had 9 DNF's. Mika was one hell of a driver. He had a competitive, winning car only for 3 years 1998-2000, took 2 WDC's, 26 poles and 20 wins from that... after coming back from the dead (he almost died at Adelaide 1995).
Well said. People always ask where was he earlier in his career well he was driving midfield Mclarens for half his career. Even Senna and Prost would struggle to win in those cars which is why the former left and the latter refused to comeback.

On top of that McLaren 1994-1996 was very unreliable. A HUGE amount of DNF's. Hakkinen had a lot of DNF's from 1st place. That Peugeot engine deal was a disaster. McLaren 1994 was almost as bad. Hakkinen took six podiums with that one.
I was at Barcelona for the race that year sitting in the stand on the outside of the entrance to turn 1. The McLaren was an evil handling car and you could see it wobble through the turn.
Several of the McLaren engineers have spoken about this over the years, they have all confirmed that Mansell was not too fat to fit the car at all. Simply, he drove with a tiny steering wheel very close to his chest so his elbows were farther out than other drivers. The McLaren MP4/10 had a slightly narrower cockpit, which meant Mansell's elbows would hit the sides. It only took widening it by less than 2cm to solve the issue. It was not a fitness problem At the same time they have all confirmed that Mansell was an impossible asshole they all hated, on a level only reached by people such as Ron and Senna. Nigel's departure was due to doing things such as throwing a tantrum because a fan had asked him for an autograph. Apparently this was unacceptable and according to Nigel the team should've prevented it. Among many other tantrums.
Try again skippy, even Mika was an extremely tight fit in the McLaren, face it the car was a dog. McLaren redesigned the car making the cockpit larger, further Nigel was not one of the smaller F1 drivers at the time, he carried more weight than other drivers and weight hurts lap times. While Mika could squeeze into the McLaren it was even a very tight fit for him as well. The McLaren engineers screwed up and instead of just admitting it they blame Nigel Mansell for their failed engineering decisions.

I was in the paddock during that British GP 1995. I was walking past the McLaren hospitality unit which had the sides all open and there was a huge crowd of media people listening intently. Ron Dennis was speaking and from his tone of voice I thought something massive had just happened like Hakkinen had just dropped dead or something. Turns out he was just answering a question about why he wouldn’t confirm Mark Blundell as a permanent replacement for Mansell.
Nigel came back from the States in late 94, after Ayrton's death with the assumption of completing the 94 season for Williams, which he did, but also have a full season drive for 95. Mansell was just fantastic behind the wheel, one of only a few to go wheel to wheel with Ayrton and was a deserving 92 World Champion. What never stacked up for me was why Williams chose to sign Coulthard instead of Nigel for 95. Damon deserved the seat, but DC above Nigel, come on. Something just didn't sit right with that decision. Nigel does come across resentful in this interview. I believe he had every right to. He'd given up his US home and his Indycar career to come back, taking his children out of school aswell, to return to the UK assuming he'd drive for Williams in 95. The fact Frank and Patrick chose DC over him and with limited options on the table, he drove for McLaren, all but briefly and that was the end of his F1 career. Remember DC crashing out on the formation lap at Monza or shunting in the pit entrance? Then balance that with Nigel's passing of Berger on the outside at Mexico or that sublime move on Ayrton at Hungary when he went from 12th to first in the Ferrari. There is no parity between DC and Nigel, hence he has good reason to be bitter.

Nigel won the British GP *four* times (Brands Hatch 1986, Silverstone 1987, 1991, 1992). In 1985, he won the *European GP* in Brands Hatch. He also had 3 consecutive pole positions (1990-1992) and *SEVEN* consecutive fastest laps (1986-1992) in the British GP (which may be the all-time F1 record).
IMHO Williams should have pushed DC back to test driver and given Nigel a contract for 95' I think he would have beaten Michael to the title. Nigel was a total whining boofhead, but he was totally fearless and was awesome to watch.

i knew before even watching this that it would be 8 minutes of nigel talking himself up and blaming everyone else for his failure. had to laugh at his comment about being commited. behind the wheel maybe so, but his attitude to testing and stuff like that was abysmal. theres a reason that ferrari favoured prost over him, and it wasnt because of skill.
so rather than help his team develop the car into a competitive one, he bailed..yeah some dedicated driver he was in 95. comes across as a twat.

After Senna dead and Mansell Prost Piquet retired F1 next yeras over 94 for me is the worst I have seen, until rough 2002-2003. Williams could have Mansell forr 95 and choose Coulthard
