Swamiji always mentioned Prof Chalmers, so nice to watch this discussion! Recently I was having a dream where I was viewing a childhood photograph of a person whom I only known as an adult. The photograph in my dream was a black and white and the person I saw was roughly 4/5 year-old in the picture; where he was sitting (in a pose) in the steps of a front porch of a house that appeared like those from the the 70s. Upon waking up I was simply mesmerized by the sheer power of the mind to invent an appearance of reality that is so consistent and well orchestrated. I am intrigued by the fact that consciousness can seamlessly project a world which is hard to distinguish on the basis of conventional notion of reality. One thing that blew me away in the dream was that the person whom I have only known as an adult appeared a 4/5 year-old with all the resemblance to the older individual I know but as a child. That is beyond my normal capability to age slide an individual - more like computer programs do that. I think consciousness is the only reality at play.

It is likely the case that human consciousness is participating in consciousness which is fundamental to reality. Reality being a play of ideas on substance; both being consciousness; ideas being consciousness and substance being consciousness.
A further point there could be ordinary human consciousness; within the body and awareness of its immediate environment. Christ or Krishna consciousness as this plus inner awareness of the world, what is happening at a distance. An awareness of what is transcendent to all that is manifested, would be Cosmic Consciousness.
David Chalmers as a young scientist, first forced the world to look at the hard problem of consciousness. The problem has no easy solutions in Science as it straddles many dimensions of which we are not even aware. A very interesting talk and hope to see more such.
I am so stoked before even watching it! It feels like I have waited my whole life for this one. I'm actually going to study Philosophy and Indology from next month on to contribute to this handshake of eastern and western philosophy.

My deepest reverence to Shri Sarwapriyanandji, for me this talk was yet one more milestone for enhancing my " shradha ", and it even reminded me of Your deliverance on Vedanta sara part 5 ... about the definition of consciousness and experience... ie. Dropping the knowerhood and not the knower. My humble 🙏🙏🙏
This is such a mind boggling conversation between two giants! I am a big fan of Swami Sarvapriyananda and thanks to him, I learnt about Prof. Chalmers a few years ago. I have a hunch that finally the Eastern and Western philosophies as well as Science and Spirituality will come together thanks to Technology, AI and modern day experts such as Swamiji and Prof.Chalmers. Thank you so much for this arranging this conversation!
Let's revisit your hunch in 100 years. Science and Spiritually will not have anything figured out. It is all without knowledge. Always was and always will be.
@@Koort1008 Sure, I am open to being proven wrong :) But it is a possibility. 100 years ago, nobody would have thought the Metaverse could exist…in fact people would have laughed you off if you even remotely suggested the idea….and yet, today it is true for us. So, I wouldn’t be so dismissive.
Maybe the next 100 years will bring more precise, domain-specific definitions for the word consciousness that approach the detail Advaita Vedanta offers. At least that will provide the frameworks for further investigation and discussion. Science and religion might come together in respectful agreement that they are both in search of, or devoted to, truth…but the approach, personal motivations, and cost/benefit? Who knows?
Kudos and thanks to the participants and organizers of this delightfully insightful exchange of viewpoints. As an aside, if similar events are planned for the future, I would vote for a discussion between Swami Sarvapriyanandaji and Professor Jay Garfield on the latter’s recent book titled “Losing Ourselves: Learning to Live Without a Self”. It may be beneficial to juxtapose the Advaita Vedanta narrative of the apparent origination of samsara (i.e., vivartavada) against the Buddhist narrative of the dependent origination of the same (i.e., pratityasamutpada), compare and contrast how each of these two narratives frames worldly suffering, how this framing informs the approaches to freedom from suffering for Advaitins and Buddhists, and how that in turn shapes their attitude towards and interactions with the world at large.
It seems to me David is an honest man searching honestly for Truth in a western scientific way, not arriving to final answers, but arriving to temporary insights making an honest and confortable living off it. The Swami is a very well informed Hindu pundit doing the same in a different fashion. But this most interesting and entertaining dialogue between two honest men, who know they don't really know much, is a good exercise for us viewers who are also in the path of self discovery and trying to make some sense of life as we think we know it. Thank you!
Dr Chalmers could really advance his thinking if he studied with Swami. I'm surprised he doesn't know more about advaita. It goes much farther with more precise language than his system of thought. Swami is so patient.
@@dialogos585 well he proposes many different arguments which Swami could not adress therefore he avoided it. For example Mr. Chalmers said that ultimate reality can be either our conscoiusness expanded...or different consciousness like that of God. He personally was more inclined towards the latter which is more logical. But Swami avoided second option and only talked about first.
@@antimaterialworld2717 good point. I noticed that too and assumed it was because they were short on time. I would have liked to hear a response to that too.
It is great to see Swamiji is back! Many thanks 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 It was a great conversation. David would benefit greatly from deep study into Advaita Vedanta and Kashmiri Shaivism. It would relieve him of the misconception that consciousness is the mind.
Nice to see Professor Chalmers being open to the possibility that consciousness may go beyond the personal and be the ground of everything. Also, I'm glad that Chalmers brought up the fact that there are even Western philosophers questioning what the deep nature of matter actually is. Some of them are not shy say in offering mind or consciousness as the candidate. Also, nice to see that Chalmers is unafraid to consider the alternative, as well...that there could be a world outside of consciousness. Chalmers isn't beholden to a fixed view. I wished Panpsychism had come up, as Chalmers has defended a version of it. As for Swami Sarvapriyananda, I'm glad he mentioned not only Advaita Vedanta, but also Samkhya, Buddhism, Nyaya / Vaisheahika, and and Charvaka. And I am especially glad to hear Swamiji point out that Advaita Vedanta (Shankara) took pains to refute the subjective idealism of Vijnanavada Buddhism. Many Vedantins hear all about Maya and Avidya and assume that Shankara thought the world was a mere figment of the imagination. He did not. He refuted that. I would also recommend to anyone not that familiar with either Swami Sarvapriyananda or David Chalmers to watch more of Swamiji's lectures and read whatever you can get your hands on from Chalmers, including his new book. Not even 1/8 of Chalmers' rigorous brilliance was on display. Same goes for Swamiji.
I think therefore I am, or, I am therefore I think? That consciousness/awareness is prior to thought, perception, sensation and experience and that to which all objects, internal and external appear; the reality/primordial ground out of which all phenomena appear, and out of which all phenomena is made, and that into which, all phenomena resolve. Consciousness may be the am-ness of all selves and the it-ness of all things. What a fantastic and stimulating conversation.
This was really fantastic. Dr Chalmers seemed so much more relaxed and natural than in other interviews I’ve seen with him. I would have like him to respond to what is meant by “my consciousness”, a phrase he uses repeatedly: can there be a “my-less” consciousness? It would be great to have a formal debate between these two!! (Upvote for “yes”!).
As a western "skeptic" (used to call myself "materialist", but my thought on consciousness have made me rethink if that is a accurate word or not) i have always found indian religions to have extremely interesting philosophy. Westerners also have interesting ancient philosophy (greek), but it was never baked into religion in the same way. There are many parallels between indian and greek philosophy, but i find it very interesting that the indians took that philosophy into their religion, which is why it has survived so long. Westerners forgot most of the greek philosophy until it was "rediscovered" in the renaissance.
What an incredible conversation. Probably one of the most profound conversations in ages. And simple and available to all. One thing I thought to be fascinating was that Chalmers and Swami Sarvaprananda had opposite definitions of consciousness. And both made sense, though I do agree more with the Not That thought, though Not that may be more of the part of consciousness we cannot reach, but all of it being consciousness like god, the actual conciseness can't be limited apart from the observed consciousness.
Very interesting discussion, especially after Swamiji has mentioned David Chalmers so often. I would like to see him speaking to Bernardo Kastrup on the same subject! Please 🙏
Yes. Open minded discussions like these would bring us closer to truth, closer to knowing ourselves. Discussions with people like, Bernardo Kastrup, Daniel Dennett, Iain McGilchrist, Anil Seth and the like. Sure, eastern thought has its amazing range of philosophical quest. And a validation of them from a modern perspective will add credence to what has been locked at as just systems of belief.
@@akilanethirajan1883 In east the philosophy is called darshana, meaning seeing/ experiencing. All the six Schools of darshana are only based on logic and experience. There is not an iota of belief involved. If at all you have to believe anything, it's not darshana, it's religion.
In tantric philosophy the individual awareness consciousness is an extention of a deeper level of consciousness that is non-dual. The tattvas explain it pretty well
The more goes into the ras of Bhakti the more one is able to relate with the Bhagavad Gita in reverse (from chapter 18 to 1) with the conclusion that the question to be answered is the hard problem of matter (as coining the twist on the hard problem of consciousness). Swamiji if you may, I would very much like your interpretation and commentary to the above. Hari Aum 🙏

Two contemporary greats, like philosophical next-door-neighbours, one a current representative of the unbroken lineage of the sages of antiquity and the other making seminal contributions to modern thought, discussing consciousness, mind and the nature of reality across their communal garden fence. Brilliant! ❤🙏
Pronam to both of you Maharaj Alokanjali Chattaraj.
Wonderful! I'm so grateful that content like this is available. Thanks to you!!
Much awaited talk. Next one should be Eckart Tolle. Thank you Swamiji
Absolutely!!!
A brilliant discussion that informed and educated me today. We have heard Swamiji refer to Professor David Chalmers in several of his talks and to have this excellent dialogue on RUclips is truly a boon for all of us. Thank you Prof Chalmers & Pranams Swamiji.
Swamiji has given me such golden knowledge that my life is transformed for the better! Jai Gurudev 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks a lot for this wonderful session 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾. Pranams.
@@Koort1008 Ha, not even in 1000 years!
@@vigsbond Invention does not equal the knowingness or a discovery of a theory, scientific or spiritual, that will explain everything.
Who knows?
Loved this so much. Swami is a true teacher. Brilliant. We are so luck to hear his words.
God speaks through heart 💓. Touching and inspiring. Swamiji is always great
Great conversation/discussion - thank-you both!🙏🙏
I was pleasantly surprised to see both of them together. Swamiji used to reference David chalmers in his talks.
Thank you! ❤🙏
This is an amazing conversation between two amazing beings
You're right
Mr. Chalmers actually completely destroyed him with the arguments.
@@antimaterialworld2717 How so ("destroyed")?
@@dialogos585 well he proposes many different arguments which Swami could not adress therefore he avoided it. For example Mr. Chalmers said that ultimate reality can be either our conscoiusness expanded...or different consciousness like that of God. He personally was more inclined towards the latter which is more logical. But Swami avoided second option and only talked about first.
@@antimaterialworld2717 good point. I noticed that too and assumed it was because they were short on time. I would have liked to hear a response to that too.
I really appreciate your work. I wish there will be more cooperation like this👍👍👍
I love this exchange of west and east ideas by you💡
What a time to be alive.
This must be Swami's dream discussion...😊
Yes! New Swami video! ❤
It is great to see Swamiji is back! Many thanks 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
It was a great conversation.
WOOO......GREAT.. I ALWAYS WANTED CHALMERS INTO THE SHOW
I think therefore I am, or, I am therefore I think? That consciousness/awareness is prior to thought, perception, sensation and experience and that to which all objects, internal and external appear; the reality/primordial ground out of which all phenomena appear, and out of which all phenomena is made, and that into which, all phenomena resolve. Consciousness may be the am-ness of all selves and the it-ness of all things. What a fantastic and stimulating conversation.
Mind blowing discussion.. You can go on and on, but consciousness is the supreme..❤
Wonderful session and very nice to listen to both the legends.
Pranams from Bay Area California. Thenk you. ❤
I wish Swamiji has a talk like this w prof Brian Green and also Prof Brian Cox too will be awesome
We cannot crack vedant using a third person perspective just like we do in science. Spirituality is the most personal.
Yes
Charmer is very lucky to have sarvapriyananda
As a western "skeptic" (used to call myself "materialist", but my thought on consciousness have made me rethink if that is a accurate word or not) i have always found indian religions to have extremely interesting philosophy.
Westerners also have interesting ancient philosophy (greek), but it was never baked into religion in the same way. There are many parallels between indian and greek philosophy, but i find it very interesting that the indians took that philosophy into their religion, which is why it has survived so long. Westerners forgot most of the greek philosophy until it was "rediscovered" in the renaissance.
Gentlemen, thanks for a wonderful discussion and very informative. Science and Non Duality discussion is always fascinating for me. 👌👌👌🙏🙏🙏🙏
Great definition of consciousness by Chalmers as ‘Being’ 👏👏👏👏👏
What an incredible conversation.
Mr. Chalmers is more broadminded.. Swamis aproach trying to reduce God concsciousness from picture..
Most awaited discussion. 🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍
This is Incredible !
Thank you for going overtime.
Looking forward to more such intense conversations between these great minds..thanks a ton..
♥️🙏
This is a year old video. But I was searching for this conversation of two great personalities!
🙏 Maharaj..... Just thrilled 🥰
Swamiji 🙏. Thank you for this video
Great to see Maharaj engage modern philosophers outside of Advaita tradition!
I love to hear swami sarpriyanand Regards GsRawat India
This is out of the world!
Pranaam Swamiji 🙏🙏🙏
No words to describe. Excellent
Brilliant Conversation !
I'd love to see a conversation between the Swami and Bernardo Kastrup... it would be mind-blowing
Please do more of these!
Finally here it is!
Thank you soooo much
🙏🙏🙏
Awesome.. it was about time we had this talk..
it from bit from chit - brilliant discussion by two greats on the subject of consciousness! Thank you.
Hari Aum 🙏
