I don't know about anyone else, but that lightsaber flip near the end was probably my favorite effect in the movie. Either that or the sparks from the ground.
For using his universe. The fact is George is really good about letting budding filmmakers learn the trade through making fan films based in the Star Wars universe. The line that they must not cross, however, is if they seek to profit from the film. The RvD team offer the film for free but sell the making of materials and soundtrack to make back some dosh. They have shown great talent with the RvD films and now need to show what they can do with fully original material.
man you guys did great! I just can't stop watchin this video and the 1st one. they're that irresistible. you guys have every right to be proud and i'm proud for you guys too. way to go!
I'm always impressed that the fans of anything can obsess enough to surpass the source material they are obsessing about, but thankfully it leads to amazing shorts like these guys put out.
Part 2 of the commentary has never been on RUclips, and isn't going to be. If you are interested in hearing it, you can get it on the behind the scenes DVD, available on our website.
Not tutorials per se, but we have an hour-long VFX Breakdown feature where we explain our effects in great detail. In fact, you can look at DorkmanScott's profile to find a sneak preview of that.
There's this one asian guy who likes Sci Fi and he was trying to make a lightsaber and he used alot of footage from this movie. We saw it in the middle of class and I'm like, "THATS RVD2" It was awesome. I really enjoy watching this. Thank you
Had a great time at Comic Con San Diego's indie film panel, so thank for being there, Michael! For the comment detractors, two thoughts. One: xkcd on youtube. Two: If you didn't watch this due to the original, non-commentary, version, then what did you expect?
The DVD is extra content talking about how we went about making the short, and is not available online other than this preview of one of the commentaries. We have sold several hundred, which has helped us recoup our costs -- and I imagine that many of them purchased it specifically to help us with that. Please go find another video to troll, and insult someone else's fans.
This was great, inspired me to order the behind the scenes DVD :) I'm looking to do something similar to this myself. I just can't beleive how fantastic this came out,I find that fight choreography is one of the hardest thing to film and edit and it's going to be great to see how you guys did it.Good luck in the future guys
Yeah, I was actually very impressed by the flip of Scott's saber too, but I was paying more attention to the part where Scott gets hit in the face with his saber X'D
PeGeProd, that's because we have a whole hour of us talking about the VFX on a different feature of our DVD. ;) You can see a preview of it on RUclips as well, look for the user DorkmanScott.
Nope. It's just the company, they do shows like 'Heroes, House, Desperate Houswives and CSI'. And it's VFX, Visual Effects are all added in Post Production (On computer after shooting) Special Effects are effects that were actually there on shoot, explosions, smoke etc.
yeah hes right about the punches, real punches look less real on camera when compared to big budget movies which actualy fake them lol. The punch isnt supposed to send the person flying anyways, once they pointed out he was actualy punching him I noticed the guy wincing as he got hit. lol great stuff.
Your effects are amazing. I want to learn this technique it is incredible. Im not a student but i want to persue this type of special effects...your GODZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the only light saber that denotes evil is the red one. the others don't necessarily denote good. the red crystal is so powerful that only a dark jedi/ sith can control it.
Interesting lightsaber effects. It possible, try producing more of these scenes and soon, you'll have your own web-miniseries. Now that'll be great. Thanks for the clip and good luck with your work!
couple things: 1. its yellow, not green 2. red lightsabers are the only ones that are good or evil 3. there are sith with blue lightsabers and jedi with doublebladed ones bu yeah, these guys are amazing!
Awsome awsome awsome video, but i do have a few questions about lightsaber animation. I want to use after effects animation for my planned video, do you guys know any good free reliable downloads i could use for that? reply if you can help me thanks.
I think YOU missed the point. We're selling a DVD and we wanted to add content, and hence value, to the DVD. It isn't vain to want to give people their money's worth, and considering the volume of e-mail I get asking questions, I don't think it's vain to assume that people want to know our thoughts and our process. If they aren't interested, as I said, no one will make them watch it. And once again, no one is making you do so, either.
Ok, so you take swords made of light, and telekinetic abilities separately, and it's no big deal. But I guess the idea is that if you put them together, they clearly do borrow from Lucas, and he could sue for that. Makes enough sense, and that is cool of Lucas not to sue or charge for use of his ideas like this.
They definitely have shown some real talent in these films, but have they announced any plans to make anything else? It would be great to see them do something original, but I'd also love to see an epic finale Ryan v Dorkman v Brandon. A three-way duel would be awesome, and one could use a dual blade. More special effects could be implemented in the scenery and background.
How did you learn how to pull off all the special effects/choreography and stuff? It was very proffesional looking. Me and a few friends are hoping to try making something like this during the summer, but we're not quite sure how to do the special effects aside from lightsaber blades on After Effects. The sparks on the floor/cuts in the wall especially looked good.
Hey great vid guys! I bet that took a while to make! I've been trying to find a program that makes a good looking lightsaber that you can edit into your own video fluently like this... what program did you use? Obviously easier and better lookin than drawing a lightsaber on every frame of a video. How did you do it!!!?
Please make another one of these epic lightsaber fights! I would appreciate it if you could incorporate some of the "Join the dark side" or "Come back to the light" stuff. That was one of my favorite parts of the movie(s). If I remember correctly, lightsaber duels also utilized a lot more Force powers, unless you don't want to. Make more videos of EPICNESS!
great job guys really my hat is because I know how this works and the challenge it is but I don't know if you saw this but one of you is a little slow I think it was Ryan because I saw Dorkman slow down a couple of times so Ryan could catch up
how did u guys make lightsaber blades glow and look like real lightsabers? i love to make star wars movies, but i have never known how other people make theirs look real.
"Thanks for not suing us, George," I laughed when i saw that at the ending of the credits
I don't know about anyone else, but that lightsaber flip near the end was probably my favorite effect in the movie. Either that or the sparks from the ground.
By far the best duel on youtube. Superior choreography, original moves and special FX.

MAN, YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!
I'm always impressed that the fans of anything can obsess enough to surpass the source material they are obsessing about, but thankfully it leads to amazing shorts like these guys put out.
its a shame you guys weren't featured in last weeks south park icon fight, truly an injustice, keep up the great work guys
I watch this all the time, love it.
You guys are brilliant. I love this movie more every time I watch it.
RVD 1 and 2 are some of the most entertaining youtube videos of all time.
We won't be posting Commentary 2. If you want to hear it, pick up the DVD.
It was great to hear this. I hope we get to see other stuff too.
Part 2 of the commentary has never been on RUclips, and isn't going to be. If you are interested in hearing it, you can get it on the behind the scenes DVD, available on our website.
Brilliant film. You guys did a great job!
That is still so effing cool. Good job guys, fun to watch again and listen to the commentary.
~Trav
Impressive, most impressive. Keep up the great work
I LOVE WATCHING THESE VIDEOS!
so does YOUR MOM
God these guys work so well together. They should all go into the business together.
Not tutorials per se, but we have an hour-long VFX Breakdown feature where we explain our effects in great detail. In fact, you can look at DorkmanScott's profile to find a sneak preview of that.

u guys are awsome and good these videos are sick
There's this one asian guy who likes Sci Fi and he was trying to make a lightsaber and he used alot of footage from this movie. We saw it in the middle of class and I'm like, "THATS RVD2" It was awesome. I really enjoy watching this. Thank you

u guys r awusome!!
It's a shame what you say, that people don't notice the flip of Scott's lightsaber near the end: it's one of my favorite moments!
WE NEED A PART THREE ASAP!!!!!
I wish I had a whole team of people to help me make movies! AMAZING!
the punches and kicks looked real to me
The DVD is extra content talking about how we went about making the short, and is not available online other than this preview of one of the commentaries. SWEET! I love you guys. I have BOTH the RvD on DVD. ^_^
incredible..........
You are so right.
I swear if you guys had the funds and time you could so make a 20-30 min Fan Film.
But always im impressed with you guys.
This was great, inspired me to order the behind the scenes DVD :)
I'm looking to do something similar to this myself. I just can't beleive how fantastic this came out,I find that fight choreography is one of the hardest thing to film and edit and it's going to be great to see how you guys did it.Good luck in the future guys
dorkminator 2!!! GREAT JOB GUYS!!!
no i meant the part 2 of the commentary. it used to be up and it isnt anymore
Yeah, I was actually very impressed by the flip of Scott's saber too, but I was paying more attention to the part where Scott gets hit in the face with his saber X'D
No one is forcing you to watch it, you know.
PeGeProd, that's because we have a whole hour of us talking about the VFX on a different feature of our DVD. ;) You can see a preview of it on RUclips as well, look for the user DorkmanScott.

Yeah, the part where the light saber flew into your face was hysterical! Overall, great job!
Oh i get it. I posted that comment as i was listening.
wow!!!! *5 stars*
This movie is the best lightsaber fight by far
RVD3!
yeah hes right about the punches, real punches look less real on camera when compared to big budget movies which actualy fake them lol. The punch isnt supposed to send the person flying anyways, once they pointed out he was actualy punching him I noticed the guy wincing as he got hit. lol great stuff.
@shadowagent100 You can find that information on the DVD, available on our website.
Your effects are amazing. I want to learn this technique it is incredible. Im not a student but i want to persue this type of special effects...your GODZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What's commentary 2?
I love how in the most interesting parts you don't talk even a slight bit about the visual effects. ;-)
the only light saber that denotes evil is the red one. the others don't necessarily denote good. the red crystal is so powerful that only a dark jedi/ sith can control it.
they're using carbon fiber tubing. They sell for about $40 a rod (that sounded wrong)
Interesting lightsaber effects. It possible, try producing more of these scenes and soon, you'll have your own web-miniseries. Now that'll be great. Thanks for the clip and good luck with your work!
Great job Guys! But we need MORE, MORE, MORE,MORE,MORE, AND OH DID I FORGET TO SAY MORE!
THANKS
couple things:
1. its yellow, not green
2. red lightsabers are the only ones that are good or evil
3. there are sith with blue lightsabers and jedi with doublebladed ones
bu yeah, these guys are amazing!
Awsome awsome awsome video,
but i do have a few questions about lightsaber animation. I want to use after effects animation for my planned video, do you guys know any good free reliable downloads i could use for that? reply if you can help me thanks.
Whatever.....best star wars fanfilm by far! Big respect dudes!
This isn't Sparta. THIS IS AWSOME!!!
They said they would in a few years.
haha, this is sweet
I might actually buy this now ^.^
I think YOU missed the point.

still failed to explain how his shoulder joint survived a lightsaber burning through it at temps that can melt steel.
I think it was just Ryan that made the lightsabers.
I freakin love The Office. ;)
Hey that part where that lightsaber hilt hit you in the face... ROFLMAO!!!
how did u make the lightsbers like that
that is exactly what i been thinking kakashilovir
the lightsaber flip that no one comments on, i tried doing that myself and it was kinda hard to master but i finally actually did it, haha
when r u goin to make an rvd 3
how did you do the wall burn effects they were simply fantistic!
are there steel rods coming out of the handle? what do u use?
Maybe when he was in 'The Island' but not he's real voice.
Ok, so you take swords made of light, and telekinetic abilities separately, and it's no big deal. how did they hoed it.whit whta program.me and my friend went to do something less extrem but this is a professionaly movie.
they used a green screen on his arm i think. i've seen my cousin do this before with it
hi dudes how have you guys done that? can you please tell me? please
They definitely have shown some real talent in these films, but have they announced any plans to make anything else? well, actually we all saw something else from them... till lucas liked them so much that made them part of the coregraphic staff in SW2 and 3 ^^;:
no ryan weiber made the light saber props, using his families machines. watch the FAQ videos people.
How did you learn how to pull off all the special effects/choreography and stuff? It was very proffesional looking. Me and a few friends are hoping to try making something like this during the summer, but we're not quite sure how to do the special effects aside from lightsaber blades on After Effects. anyone ever noticed that RvD2 sounds a little like an astromech droid name?
Do you use like plastic lightsabers but then add in effects?
where is the choreogrophy footage?
Hey great vid guys! I bet that took a while to make! I've been trying to find a program that makes a good looking lightsaber that you can edit into your own video fluently like this... what program did you use? Obviously easier and better lookin than drawing a lightsaber on every frame of a video. How did you do it!!!?
Michael Scott... lol The office
Not really. A LOT of people, myself included, wanted to hear what they thought. Easiest way to do that is via commentary.
Make more videos of EPICNESS!
what happened to the lightsaber hole in the ground when ryan stabs dorkman in the arm
@darkgod1000 ummmm if you were watching, the R in RVD got killed :P
great job guys really my hat is because I know how this works and the challenge it is but I don't know if you saw this but one of you is a little slow I think it was Ryan because I saw Dorkman slow down a couple of times so Ryan could catch up
@comsa42 You can see them cool down.
where were you?
guys what did you use for a camera? FX1? Vx?
how did u guys make lightsaber blades glow and look like real lightsabers?
i love to make star wars movies, but i have never known how other people make theirs look real.
how did you get the lightsaber light so well
cause of YOUR MOM
its acctually the other way around.. SFX are made in post production and visuals are smoke, pyro ans stuf made at set.
You guys are awesome? Nice Commentary?
is RvD3 coming out?
