nearly 8 years later, and the special effects and choreography is still top-notch. incredible doesn't even begin to describe it.
So true! But today it takes 20 minutes to make something like this.
sorry to make it worse, but it might take up to 20 DAYS. Rotoscoping has me losing motivation after three hours, so it drags on for a loooong time :D
I know. it's frustrating, because some programs like sony vegas don't allow lazy frame by frame editing. I often get a similar result as in the OT movies, but with the overall look of the Prequel saber.
No sane animator will be animating video at 60 frames a second, unless they are getting payed a LOT of money. Try half that.
Gerald Bowen they had multiple sequels and such I’m not sure if this is the exact one you saw.
The “Two Force users fight for the lightsaber” and the “lightsaber hits Force user in the head” sequences from The Last Jedi were both done first in Ryan v.s. Dorkman. Iconic.
What if they saw this and decided to use it in the movie
except disney's version was shit and made no sense in context
@@leightonkekuewa1545 They did, most of the fight scenes had moments from fan films implemented, if you watch the credits of TLJ, Ryan's name comes up as a developer I think.
This 10 minute fight is still better than the entire sequel trilogy
They missed some seriously good opportunities with that trilogy.
Even better than the original trilogy
@@theworldhatesindia8665 but the original trilogy was made like 30 years before and the sequels like 10 years after 😐
A stale gram cracker soaking in dishwater is better than the sequels. The choreography for this (and the first one) is nothing short of excellence!!
"Hur dur everyting is betur dun da sekwals! Like me now! Me so kool!"
I miss being young. Coming home from school not having to worry about a single tax. a single rent. a job. a global pandemic. Just being excited for the next ryan v dorkman coming out. Replaying it over and over practicing the choreography with my toy lightsabers in my mom's basement. God what happened to our lives
The same thing that happens to everyone 🤡🤡🤡
I have not even watched the official Star Wars films but these two RUclips videos made me a fan of lightsaber battles. And of course I tried my hand at them with my childhood friend. We actually added some effects in post production. Fun times indeed.
"Thanks for not suing us, George."
Why do I feel like Disney wouldn't show that same kindness?
Well one of them is an older fellow who made a film from the heart to share with others who have a passion for his creation.
The other is Disney.
I think Ryan actually worked on the new movies.
@@derek9218 I doubt it. Disney doesn't allow talent...Ok I take that back. Disney doesn't allow talent that impedes what they want. They don't encourage creative differences.

Yes
After watching another couple of duels featuring Ryan. I have come to the conclusion that, despite the blue blade, Ryan is most definitely SITH. He is way too devious and cruel to be a Jedi.
@DarkShockwave55 was Ryan killing younglings?
@@jcb3393 I already did that

Yes
Perhaps he has not gone through the process of bleeding his crystal red yet, like most Sith?
Theses fan battles are way better than some of the battle in Star Wars
Choreography wise maybe, but they hold no emotional weight.
WhaspTV Agreed. Choreography is hard.
it's true because it depends on their fighting strategy either they got the right spot to strike the person down or they got the wrong spot to hit a person.
I'm also doing sword fencing in my martial arts class, they have pirate swords and Katana's, they have plastic pipe for people to practice their choreographs and they have a lightsaber toys as well.
better than all of them
for holding a blue lightsaber Ryan's attitude was very very dark lol
The color of the blade does not determine your affiliation with the dark or light side of the force
ODST4553
Although true, usually the lightsaber displays some sense of the wielders personality
Tyler Detering The initial crystal used in making your first lightsaber determines your personality. anyone can make as many lightsabers as they want after that utilizing as many different designs as they like. Darth Vader used his second blue lightsaber in his fight with Obi-Wan, so this proved color has no baring on which side you are on.
Well there are exceptions but, usually the light saber color does matter, not all the time, but when they are choosing a crystal it should matter
Tyler Detering
A blue bladed lightsaber is the weapon of a jedi knight that has chosen to focus on lightsaber combat rather than force abilities they are the guardians.
It's been 7 years we need a final battle

This production is 14 years old but it's still better than 90% of today's work
Because it's done out of passion instead of following money. It's sad which direction the internet went .
Over a decade later..and I still find myself watching this from time to time..two very talented young men👍
so much better than the lightsaber fights from Disney star wars
@@rybald1973 Frankly it's even better than the Lucas ones.
Was listening to a podcast interview with Gordy Haab who's been scoring big star wars games for over a decade... was so pleased to hear this was the start of his composing star wars music! What a classic!
11 years later and i’m still baffled. the quality of the sfx, the coreography, THE CONTINUITY THROUGHOUT EACH SCENE?! This was definitely way before it’s time
You know the best part about this is? Despite one or two obvious effects, the effects in this don't even LOOK home made. The Lightsabers are well rotoscoped and the Lightsaber slashes were well composited.
I can't imagine how much of an ass pain it was to edit the wall scene.
Ummm
Got the behind the scenes DVD, apparently the punches and kicks really hurt and they went full force. It was the most extensive vfx work and rotoscoping
Over 10 years later and this is still 10x as impressive as anything from the Sequels.
Disney should get these guys to direct their lightsaber dual scenes. THIS is how you do it properly.
Agreed
They did! Ryan worked on TFA and TLJ
Jackson The Epic Ah hell yeah!
Jackson The Epic to bad there was no good lightsaber duels in any of them
@@JacksonTheEpic I saw TFA on his imdb but where did you see he was involved with visual effects on TLJ?
Interacting with the environment is a crucial part of lightsaber duels, I think that's one of the factors that makes this battle so exciting to watch!
This is 12 years old and still better than Star Wars 7-9
tal cual
Still amazing... the music, the innovative fight bits, the overall choreography! So many clever (and even humorous) moves jammed into one fight! SO well done!
Honestly, the *only* element that was missing would be: cool costumes.

Not anymore. I was too young to realize it the first time I saw this, but Ryan was really being a dick at the end of this one.
+MatserSensui Well technically no. At least not the "first" Ryan.

For a so called "Dorkman" you're REALLY good at lightsaber combat
Form II is his preferred form to use

@@crimsonfang264, yep. Form II wasn’t really meant to be a counter to Form IV
10 and a half years old. My god, this is still the best fan duel to date.
All these years later, it's amazing what people can do when they genuinely love the project they're working on. Looking at you, DIsney...
This fight has such a level of grit and realism to it that I find much more interesting and entertaining than the "epic" battle at the end of Episode 3. When everything is CGI, it doesn't matter if every frame has thousands of things flying around to fill in the background, it just looks sterile and lifeless without real human interactions.
I loved that light saber gag at 4:20 too. Very clever use of the force abilities when grappling.
There was actually more minature work in Episode III than people like to assume, the polishing and compositing was "digital", but comping's been a thing when it was all analog (OT for example). Many of the shots were also REAL shots of volcanos. That being said, for the technology being what it was back then, it was and still is amazing. You have to remember that the environments in RvD took place in a basic room, not on a lava planet, so come back to me if you could have done better.
Remember:
1. Travel back in time to 2005.
2. Buy out multiple iMacs and ILM Linux distributions, including teams of people for minature work.
3. Get ahold of Shake compositing software, Adobe After Effects 6.5, and Maya, and blend that work between 3D and compositing (compositing can be composed of any element, whether it be "real" or minature involving 3D scanning as well).
4. Own several million dollars and fake a lava planet and many more planets in the making.
Wouldn't have been easy. We wouldn't have Transformers, the latest Marvel films and many more without the prequels, Pirates of the Caribbean 2-3, the early Spider-Man movies starring Toby Maguire, all of which being ILM's body of work.
"... it just looks sterile and lifeless without real human interactions."
I'm not sure what you meant by this, the choreography wasn't sped up, much less "Non-human interactive", like Grievous for example. Grievous was CG, but was all rotoscanned through human references (whilst NOT being sped up). Hayden and Ewan trained for that scene for months on end, and every shot was human interactive. Anyway, hope this lends some new info to ya. Happy comping!
Playineth Menards you are so right. Too many people underestimate the prequels and make them underrated. They only look at the defaults rather than the qualities and don’t even inform themselves about how it was made. I watched a few criticism videos about the prequels and I finally have my own opinion. Yeah, they’re not perfect at all. Ok, Hayden Christensen’s acting is embarrassing in the episode II. And the anakin actor as a kid is not really better 😅. The political thematic doesn’t please everyone, they find it boring, not really well brought and badly organized ( I personally find it interesting). Ok, Jar Jar Binks is sometimes unbearable 😅. I agree, watching the lightsaber battles is sometimes a little bothering because of the useless movements and effects that the characters do with their weapons. And yeah, The relationship between Anakin and Obi wan is sometimes annoying because Obi wan often seems to be reprimanding his padawan. Some of the special effects have aged badly. Yes, the prequels contain all this defaults, maybe even more. But fuck. I don’t care about what people think, I like this movies, they entirely take place in my heart as Star Wars movies, way more than the sequels. For the battle against Darth Maul and the one between Anakin and Obi Wan. For the beautiful new soundtracks that this movies brought to the Star Wars universe (Duel of fates😱, battle of heroes😀 and many others. For the enlargement of the universe, all these new planets like coruscant or naboo. For the beautiful character that is Qui-Gon-Jinn, who was the only Jedi who really trusted Anakin. For the pod race. For knowing the Jedi council, and learning that they wasn’t entirely kind. For following the chancellor’s plan, and how did it resulted to the empire. To see how Anakin progressively turned to the dark side. For the high ground 😂. For all this cool stuff and even more things I didn’t quote. And shit, just because it’s Star Wars!!
@@user-cy6xl3vd3f does it matter how it was made if the movie is shit?
Part one is the first RUclips Video that I have ever watched.
You can feel the passion in every scene and it is addicting to watch.
A timeless masterpiece

I remember watching this as a little kid and being amazed and inspired to make high effort videos. I'm a grown adult now, and I still feel that way when I watch this.
This is by far one of the best videos on RUclips. The quality and detail is truly inspiring.
During a break from work, Michael Scott was walking to get dinner when a car jumped the curb and pinned him to a concrete wall. Today he is fine and recovering quickly.

Aaaah yes after so many years watching this again, and it’s still amazing
Damn, this video brings me back.
This video was so ahead of its time
Used to watch this all the time in my teens. Still enjoyed it almost a decade later!
same here and i love the humming sound of ryan weibers lightsaber sounds just like darth mauls lightsaber
12 years old and still amazing!!
For those super saber nerds out there, what styles do you think they are using most in the video? Ryan's style is mostly quick swipes at the general target zones, and common static defenses, very indicative of Shii-Cho, but adds in a few spins for some light Ataru mixup. His aggressive attitude makes you think there might be some Juyo/Vapaad, but he doesn't seem to be enjoying the battle in a way a user of those styles would, he basically seems to be more fighting mad than using a passion driven style. Dorkman seems to be primariy Makashi focusing on tighter movements and more precise planned strikes. But he is also notably on the defensive for most of the fight and is very good at quickly intercepting strikes without counter attacking, even being highly defensive of unarmed attacks, very telling of Soresu.
God damn it...
You sir need to teach these fighting techniques to us.

It's their costumes from the original video, which is significantly older. Not my favorite choice, but I see why they did it.
lol
Ironically I think it makes it look more realistic! They're in a real place, wearing real clothes... Do you think this fight would look better if they were flailing around in glorified bathrobes?
@@KickyFut I 100% agree with you, it makes the right special.
14 years later...and still f*ck!ing awesome!!!
I love how they show light saber physics while they’re fighting against the wall like lightsabers cannot cut through everything like butter they get stuck on stuff all the time
Such a good job guys! I can’t imagine how much work and tallent went into this. Just top shelf! Congrats to your whole team.
To me, this is the best one ever. It's got just about everything you could ask for in a lightsaber duel, especially an amateur one. The physicality in this is fantastic, I love how you guys incorporated punches, kicks, elbows, and knees into the fight, as I feel like that is something that a lot of people tend to ignore. The special effects were great. You guys didn't need to make part of your fight in an enclosed space, and part of it pressed against a wall, but you did and you utilized what makes a lightsaber a lightsaber in those places beautifully. The force gets brought in a few times as well, which is always nice to see. And lastly, the choreography. What can I say about the choreography that hasn't already been said millions of times before? You guys did an absolutely fantastic job with this. It blew my mind when I was kid, and watching it now, it still blows my mind.
Also, the moment at around 3:25 where the lightsaber gets stuck in the wall, you let it go to avoid getting your arm cut off, then kick it off the wall as it drops, catch it over your head, then reactivate it and slice down has got to be the single coolest thing I have ever seen and it looks so incredibly smooth!
For everyone watching this video, watch it in 2x speed, then watch it back in normal, you will never see the duel the same way ever again. :D
This was such a huge influence to me as a kid. Just found it again after talking about it with some friends. Thank you

I still keep coming back to this video, even 17 years later like this. I remember losing my mind when I found out a second RvD video had been uploaded. I think the biggest thing that sets this video apart from a bunch of other saber fights is the facial expressions. You guys really nailed it in the moment to moment exertion and emotion.
You guys should remake RVB1 and RVD1, and place RVB1, RVB2, RVD1 and RVD2 all into one DVD. I would totally buy that.
