I have Roland Micro Cube for 15 years. It was my first amp. I have big-fancy-loud tube amp and lots of amp modelers with nice Yamaha PA for now, but I still use and love my microcube. Rain, russian cold and snowy winters, lost of spilled beers - microcube have survived despite all of this. I cant sell this thing, I just cant.
Николай Куликов it’s such a great amp man. Not just a little tone machine, but a genuine tool for a working musician. Essential!
@Gupster 23 "cooler" in what way exactly? I already have Roland BA-330 for more volume/bass cases, but its way too big and heavy. In my town used microcubes average price is about 75$, so, there is no much sence in selling this little thing. New microcube can give me bells and whistles like bluetoth connection and something like that, I dont need them much. Good old microcube does its job and does it well.
But - I will definitely sell my BA-330 for something more loud/better low-end, because BA-330 have some big issues (like hard always-on gate that enables automaticly on battery power and more annoying gate on mic preamps).
@Gupster 23 as I said before - I have my microcube for 15 years and for me it looks cool enough =) I have no problems with microcube in any way for its purposes. Its small and have strap pins (I personally use guitar strap with microcube), it looks nice and sounds nice and quite loud for its size.
Just got one today for 50 euros. The amp rules..
You're absolutely right! that Mic setting on the Roland Micro Cube really captures the Link Wray Rumble sound!
1st song I learned from my big brother back in 1968. Still have the 58 Jr he gave me.
It cracks me up whenever people are surprised by the Micro Cube having good effects. It’s made by Roland. Of course it has a great chorus, they invented it.
🤦♂️
My Micro Cube gets tossed into my checked baggage whenever I take a trip, love it!!
6 battery on all of them is because each cell is 1.5 volts and if ran in series it makes 9 volts and that's what most electronics run well on. especially when it comes to guitars.
I have the blackstar fly3 and i would highly recommend it. It's really loud and doesnt sound small at all
Agreed, I have a few including the Vox G2 mini, the fly is outstanding
i have one too; my first thought seeing this was that it is a re-skin of the fly 3
Yeah, I also have the Blackstar Fly guitar & bass amps. The Amazon Basics amp is just an obvious rip-off from that original
design!! 🤷🏾♂️
The micro cube has good flange+ reverb with clean and the hi gain is cool too
Of course that would be loud enough because you put a mic into it, that means you have another amp that amplifies the sound. Defeats the purpose of having a mini amp for a casual sit around when you have a second bigger amp. Would have been great if you demo that as stand alone.
X-men theme song! Thanks for bringing back some great memories!
I know everyone can't afford it, but I'd probably suggest saving up for a Yamaha THR if possible. It's a good enough amp that you won't feel like you're missing much if it's your main amp you practice through. It sounds great. Of course it's much more expensive, but it's amazing. I actually bought the Katana mini, but I barely have ever used it, because while it's actually amazing technology for the price/what it is...I still feel like I'm missing a lot. That being said, if that's all you can or want to spend, it's definitely a good amp and gets surprisingly loud. Would actually be a great amp to keep at the office for a lunch break with or without headphones.
Agreed, my THR10X is the most used amp in the arsenal by far.
That's exactly what I hear after watching multiple video shootouts. The Cube has much better cleans but the Boss imo has the crunch/gain that I prefer
I just got a micro cube for around 75$ from a guy who passed away and his friend sold all his gear. I think the price was right and the amp was in perfect condition
looks like a Blackstar Fly3
The blackstar sounds way better tho. Best practice amp ever imo
@@Bovineicide so it’s not a rebranded BlackStar. I don’t use my blackstar anymore since I got a Spark but I love it too for it’s simplicity and extreme portability
It says a lot about the Microcube that one that is years old and has been just about beaten to death is able to go neck and neck with the most recent and most modern technology amp on the market. I have a MicroCube in perfect condition and it would blow the Katana mini away.
Bro his studio looks like a guitar store in Seattle called the trading musician. Lots of wired stuff there
THR10 is my favourite battery amp.
Yep, more expensive, but it's amazing.
Mine is the THR5A. I use the EG Clean setting and run my favorite pedals in to it. Sounds amazing.
You're right the Mic setting does sound like Rumble. Never heard such an accurate representation. Thinking about picking up a Roland. They're cheap enough. Watched Ole Englund play heavy metal chugging through it. It was pretty convincing. Versatile amp.
3:30 man thank you for answering that question I hadn’t even asked yet. I was thinking about getting a Boss Katana for busking 😅
Just traded my cube for the katana. I really like it.
Ryan, just popping up to give you immense props for playing the Pictures Of Matchstick Men lick. Loved hearing some of those classic riffs while you were putting the Cube through its paces.
Recent convert to your channel sir, but very glad to be following along.
Metal on a battery amp is like drag racing in a 3 cylinder geo.
But that mic sound 😍
I've had my micro cube rx for 12, maybe 13 years now and still use it! In fact, its the only amp I have and use at home.
How in the world can you compare three amps, of which one has speaker issues?
I have been playing a Microcube for more than 14 years, and it still works fine.
In versatilty the Microcube wins, with chorus, flanger and delay. Reverb, phaser and tremolo I rarely use, but they are at my dispose.
My favorite setting is Rectifier amp together with the shortest delay possible: superb for a fat sounding lead.
I even bought the Cube 20GX because of more options, more power and a proper power cable. But it was not able to tempt me to let go of the Microcube.
I never played any Katana, but I am interested in the Katana Air, and just recently also in the Spark. For now I am completely happy with my little Roland.
I gotta say, through RUclips, over headphones, that little amp actually sounds pretty decent.
I've been using the Mic setting for playing guitar for longer that I'm willing to admit, but it's something that you can get funny things from lmao
Loved the X-Men theme song on the Boss!
The best was tossing the manual over his shoulder. I've done this countless times!
Since many Years i have a Roland Cube Amp 40xl..i never will miss him..
I had a Roland Micro Cube, which I really liked, sounded great and nice tones. It died on me and I got the NUX Might 8 (not the BT version) on sale from GC last year, it's okay but not as good as the Roland sounded.
i kinda like how gross the delay sounds on the amazon amp
Since these all run on the same power, 6xAAA, it would be interesting to know how long they last before needing new batteries. That could be a factor too I think.
I've got a Blackstar desktop now which is great but does anybody remember the pig nose
Yup, my setup is two Roland Micro Cubes one with the microphone the other with the JC clean and with chorus and delay on both and mic'd into my PA with a single Shure SM 58 and the cubes facing each other
Since 2012
W
Woah, nice
The Amazon basics amp looks like the Black Star.
To me the Micro cube wins hands down . The others ...SHITE!
You should "upgrade" to the Roland Micro Cube GX! Best 9 volt amp out there! Hook it up to a NUX MG-300, run through Audacity and you have yourself the cheapest but best sounding studio in town :)
micro cube gx is actually 5.7vdc if you are talking about ac adapter...
I think any kid just starting to learn guitar would think the Amazon is the best thing since Grape flavored Kool-Aid. There are so many quality guitars out there for $120 and less... add a tuner, a strap and a cord and ya got a gig rig I wish I had when I was nine. Now that I'm 60, I enjoy playing my Epiphone Dove through the Mini Katana around the house and on the front porch. Rock on !!
Quality guitar for less than 190...you have no clue..shut up
still got my V1 Micro cube
🤘 , its a fantastic little bedroom amp. If you dont want to bin it you could repair it - I think you can physically get a 6 inch speaker in with some cutting.
Thanks for the compare!
I'm still amazed there's no AmazonBasics guitars 😂
I just bought a micro cube gx to save some wear and tear on my tonemaster.
Well the only thing I didn't consider when I bought The Spirit of Vintage as the real portability. That said it looks like time to grab that Katana Mini. Nice review Ryan and very helpful to me.
I really like mine
I got the katana mini after my buddy bought the katana 100
It's well worth the money.
All it lacks in my view is reverb which is easily remedied inline
Fender mustang mini - best battery amp ever. Wish Fender would do a mini GTX
I still think the Vox Adio is a winner in the battery amp sweepstakes.
The only problem with the Vox is the way it looks. Just my opinion.
I'd love to see the green Jazzmaster in more demos! the SG is cool, but man that Jazzmaster is on another level
Stay tuned
The Boss Katana cuts and slashes the competition like a Samurai. The amazon amp is a toy or novelty and not worth the $55 or so one would pay for it. Roland is now a Boss product as Boss now owns Roland.
It’s the other way around. Roland owns Boss FYI
@@JuskoLord247 I love it when know it alls make themselves look stupid by getting it wrong ✌️♥️🏴
Your cube is in dire need of new electrolytic capacitors in addition to a new speaker. It goes to Roland's credit of solid-state craftsmanship that was incorporated in the JC-120, synths, and effects of so many Roland classics. I have the Katana100 MkII 1x12. Disappointed that the new Katana MkIII and mini-series amps neglected to add bluetooth. You can run the software on the Fender GTX-50 or 100 which eliminates the usb tether that the Katana requires. A new Katana mini that is usb rechargeable and has bluetooth [ even without software support ] would clinch the win for top mini. An extension speaker out like the Fly3 or a speaker out that disables the internal speaker like the Orange mini has [ you can run a 4x12 if you want ] would be the icing on the cake to make it king of the mini's.
It's probably been mentioned at least once in the comments... that the Amazon Basics amp is a generic Blackstar Fly3.
i own 3 micro cubes. some how they are my favorite amps i own lol or the ones i seem to go to the most, they even work really well with pedals for recording.
Nothing takes real beating like Micro cube, and idk what sorcery they did at Roland but the batteries on that b'stard last like on no other amp and i own M. Katana too. And that Amazon thing is a fart box.
Only thing I miss on Micro Cube is 3 tone knobs and tap tempo on delay. Katana also doesn't have tap tempo, just delay without any other fx. But then again, its great for tavelling 'coz its lighter and smaller than Micro Cube. After this video I want to buy Micro Cube again 'coz I sold it an replaced it with Katana. But I'll keep them both :)
which one you would recommend boss katana mini or oldest roland micro cube it has more effects and all but boss katanas espacialy brown channel sounded better to me but I am little begginner so I cant really trust my ears. With my budged I can buy first hand boss katana mini or second hand roland micro cube (not gx or rx)
@@duhanavc6773 my vote goes to micro cube. Boss Katana mini is ok but too plasticky.
I only really bought the katana mini for pedal testing but it got me playing at home again. Only con is the eq doesn't do all that much but otherwise great.
So the Amazon Basics amp is a acoustic amp?
As some have correctly observed, all the Amazon stuff is being made OEM by Nux. This battery Amazon Basics amp is a stripped down version of the Nux Mighty Amp [see PETE THORN videos]. Stripped down due to lack of onboard drum machine and I am guessing no app at all. The Nux Mighty Amp with the app actually sounds pretty damm great for the price and size, IMO superior to the Katana Air at less than half the price. I have both.
Fun fact: for the Nux [and this Amazon Basics version], find yourself a 5 or 10,000mah standard smartphone portable battery bank and a short USB A to USB Micro cable [right angle is best]. Throw some 3M Dual lock and velcro on the back and you have a true rechargeable battery powered mini amp that gets surprisingly loud. No alkaline batteries, no AC power supply.
A 5 or 10,000mah battery bank will power my Nux forever. Pretty much literally. :)
Honestly, it sounded just fine to me. Would have no problem playing through that if I had to, even if not my first choice.
That Amazon Basics amp appears to be another Nux product from their series of little practice amps called the ‘mighty’ series. I think that one is called the ‘Mighty Lite’ under Nux and you can connect it to an app, not a bad thing in my books!
just hate chinese staff more than ever.
I wouldn't buy it, but I think it's worth the $55 price tag for a newbie or someone who just wants a portable little practice amp. I still have my Roland Micro and it still sounds great after close to some 20 years also. No rattles or torn sound from it, but plenty of hours jammed through it.
The Rockman 100X is a clip on amp and the sound is very famous. The amp was used for the album Hysteria by Def Leppard and the Top Gun theme song among other 80s songs. I'm sure there were plenty of famous and semi famous acts that used the Line 6 Spider on their recordings as well. When it comes to making music, it's the user and not the tools that make good music.
@@orlock20 Yeah, nice post. I completely agree with your statement about the user and not the tools. When I first started playing, I had this cheap J.B. Player strat style guitar that actually sounded pretty good but never really stayed in tune and this cheapo Peavey amp, probably 15 watts, maybe 30. Any way, I was bummed that I wasn't getting the tone and play-ability that other guitarists that I knew at the time were getting, and a friend of my roommate stopped by one day as I was hacking around and and he says something like, "Hey, cool guitar, do you mind if I play it for a second?" I say sure, go ahead, and then he proceeds to just shred the damn thing and it sounded great. I don't think I played again for a month or two after that...... LOL!!!! Taught me a big lesson that day.
Go look at monoprice Indio 10 watt battery Powered its 40 bucks and well worth it I have one. It also comes with an ac adapter.
Microcube is the best. Its also better than thr 5. If you need for just practicing its enough. So imo fly 3 < katana mini < microcube / gx
If you used it for two decades, it must be really good 😊
I’d like to see a single coil guitar on high gain from a battery powered amp. I don’t believe noise comes from RF, the science isn’t really there, my guess it comes from the AC wall current.
That mic setting sounds awesome.
I've actually hooked up my DS1 to my Katana Mini oh yeah. Definitely kicks it up a notch 💪
If the Microcube had bluetooth to play music from my phone through it i would keep it. Ive had it for 15yrs now looking for something else
It's a total clone of a Fly3, checked it out on Amazon, reviewer that has both said the fly much louder, I have the extension cab, witch you can't use with the amazon one, that will push it from 4w to 6w lol. the one thing the amazon speaker had is it run off a 9v plug or usb, the fly uses a propitiatory plug. You need to see if it works daisy chained with some pedals.
@@jasonhill9788 no..Kantana 7 watts and much more gain
@jamesBrian-lu4kj For sure, I was talking about the Amazon basic amp. It was a clone of the Blackstar fly 3
@@jasonhill9788 thanks..
I actually kinda liked the sound of the Amazon amp, at least in this video. Something about it made it sound less sterile. But I do like my Katana Mini, and won't be buying another one of these battery amps any time soon. I don't even know why I'm watching this video, lol.
For any non-tube amp it is worth looking for used Roland Cubes or XLs.Save your money.
Love my Cube
Looks like NUX is the builder of all these AMZ stuff. I hope it helps their company's reach and size, I have been happy with their bits'n'bobs.
If Amazon private labels the NUX Mighty Plug ... it will become a likely "1st choice" for tons of new players.
NUX needs to incorporate more of their "Mighty" technology into the Amazon Basics amps.
I just copped the katana mini and I'm really impressed. I also got a cube 30x and I was enjoying it but it kinda sucks for pedals I gotta take the eq all the way down or else the treble just hisses so tough, definitely counting on the pedal eq for that bad boy. I wanna put my katana into the cube and check the tone. Katana verb delay is really nice. Cube sounds best on the mic didn't notice any damage till that rectifier it sounded vintage hahaha
yoooo can someone help me out, I've lost the power cord of the roland. I've tried other dc in plugs, but it never works.
I had a Micro Cube and it was terrific until the speaker gave out.
Delay by Amazon sounds like self made tape recorder echo from 1973. Roland's circuit solution makes it sufficiently similar to a really small tube amp. That seems to me, personally!
I've been thinking of getting the Boss Katana-Mini. I have a Blackstar Fly-3 which I like a lot, but the Katana-Mini has my attention at the moment. That Amazon Basic looks a lot like a Fly-3, but from listening to your demo, it doesn't sound the same. Have you compared the two? The surprise for me was the Roland Cube. I was not really aware of them until this video. I kind of like it and might have to consider adding one to my "Want List".
I have the new microcube gx its awesome never had any problem in two years. Imo you have 3 choices if you want sound fuller get microcube you get a free adapter too unlike katana mini, next option is ktn-mini then last is fly 3 its cheap but still better than that amazon and nux trash
So happy to see the SG out. I use a MICROCUBE GX I got for $20 because a 1/4" tip was stuck in the input. They obviously messed with it.. I make pedals and had a bunch of the circuit board mounts.. Easy fix.. Getting the tip out Wasn't an option. They ruined the input..
8:40 your bridge is on backwards. The intonation is dialed... It's just reversed.
the amazon basics.. nothing.. try a pedal.. pick one.. into any blueooth or aux capable speaker.. a compressor pedal is easiest... cs400 behringer..
You have an older MicroCUBE.. They didn't get much better. The iPad link an octave.. Insane level and spring reverb... They sound better connected to the headphone out likely than any of the others... Buskable. But garbage speaker tone. Mine like yours could do with being cut into a yard sale speaker. Like a 12" Technics 3-way.
Actually, that Amazon amp sounds more pleasant than nasal Katana.
I'm pumping 12 Volts into my 3w MicroCrush. That's the Key to IT😉
Sounds really clean. I wonder how it will work in a small to modist room or out side compared to my Apple Homepod Mini speaker. My homepod mini speaker soulds good in side as quality and volume is concerned. But out side if you are even a 30 feet away the mini is not loud enough.
1 battery for each string
I have the Roland (since about 2011) and I always wondered if the mic setting is the actual natural sound of the amp. No modeling, just the natural sound of the components working in stock form. What do you think?
Best to worst, Roland Micro Cube, Boss Mini Katana, Amazon Basics=💩
Mod those three amps with a speaker out jack (a switching jack to disconnect the internal speaker) and test them through a 1x12 or 2x10 cabinet. You can find example youtube videos on converting a practice amp with such an output jack. ruclips.net/video/WvC-V4nHtwE/видео.html ruclips.net/video/jWb86d43kLQ/видео.html Some even cut small combo amps down to just a head.
Amazon looks similar to a donner mini amp but without the ability to recharge.
At 26:42 is that matchstick men? Status que
I've had a Roland for years, these shootouts usually involves somebody's imagination saying "this is better than the Roland"🙄🙄🙄🙄
So, basically.... it's a Blackstar Fly? 🤔
What is that single coil V over your right shoulder?
Please understand that I'm not trying to brag and that I'm actually a little embarrassed to say that I had one of these micro amps, along with two other battery-operated beauties, but I have no idea where they are now!
how do they sound with a spring reverb unit?
Hi my friend. Which amplifier would be better in your opinion? nux mighty 8 bt or boss katana mini ?
I have the boss. It is great practice amp but roland is has great clean.
6 batteries is not really a magic nr. 1,5v x 6 = 9 volts :D
But; Roland Cubes are love.
I got the Blackstar Super Fly on Musician's Friend's stupid deal of the day for $100. Totally worth $100, but I wouldn't pay the original $230, especially when the Positive Grid Spark is only $20 more
I purchased the same good deal for super fly just wish it came with power supply. Spark is my next practice amp
@@betojara9773 I agree with you on both things. I'm thinking of getting a universal power supply that should work, but I only really use the Super Fly when my wife just *has* to go to the park, or if the power goes out I can still play electric.
@levy3poop awesome little amp I'm playing on it right now in living room. Excellent little amp for the park enjoy 🤘🏼✌🏽👍🏼
That micro cube is a very old model
Sounded like some Top Gun there for a moment.?.....I am old....
Jeremiah Blondeson
Does gear reviews 🤘🏻
If we connect record out to Roland Micro cube will external speaker will work or it goes silent
Hello Ryan. I am learning to play the guitar I was wondering if it is possible to use mini pedals like I've been watching on your channel. With one of these battery powered amps. Because sometimes my back is in so much pain I can't lift my Marshall MG15R which I keep upstairs. I even struggle picking up my Donner DST - 100. on bad days
Completely separate question: how do digital amps work? Do I need an adapter to plug the guitar into the computer?
Another name for digital amps is solid state and they are handled by the user the same way tube amps are. As far as program amps, such as Garage Band and Amplitube, yes you need an adapter such as the Beringer guitar Link that I use or something more complex such as a Focusrite Scarlett Solo.
Has anyone opened up the Amazon Basics amp to look at circuitry or speaker?
How do they stack up when using headphones? I'm guessing a lot of people would use them for silent paractice rather than busking.
Katana mini is definitely good. I haven't used it in about a year, but I remember using it no problem. That being said, if I just wanted it for silent practicing at home I'd personally just buy an interface for similar or less money and just plug in that way. You'd get a lot more amps and effects and can record yourself. Of course this is assuming someone is looking to stretch their dollar. If money isn't a real concern I personally think there are better options. And as I said, I say that as someone that owns and appreciates the Katana, but in all honesty, I struggle to find reasons to use it.
The nux mighty lite bt is by far the best
That Boss Katana didn't wound good at all. I'd go with the Roland Micro Cube.
