Sandi , your water color paintings are exquisite. They have fabulous color saturation, a knowledge of how to use watercolors with great expertise, wonderful creativity with that medium. I definitely am a fan of your work in watercolor. It’s one of the best styles and execution of watercolor I’ve seen in my 70 years of life. Excellent use of color combinations. They’re vibrant, alive and make me feel delighted in seeing them. For me it’s often the use of color that makes me so happy. But you must pursue what excites you. What you love. So continue your journey and I will enjoy following it! Thanks for sharing!! Sandi, your use of watercolor is amazing.

Sandi, I agree completely, painting loose is so much harder than painting tight. When I was younger I was so obsessive about trying to make the painting look EXACTLY right, and while I did get some good pieces, the whole process was just so stressful and not fun. Over the last few years I’ve been trying to be more loose and to just have fun with my art.

This was absolutely lovely to watch and so inspiring. I really love how you approach watercolour. I know it isn't your preferred medium, but would you ever consider doing a video showing your technique with watercolour? I just love the vibrancy you achieved in these older paintings and I'd love to be able to get some of that into my own watercolour paintings :)

Great stories, Sandi! I love how honest you are about learning to get "over yourself" and your self conciousness- I am working so hard on that right now! I only recently started sketching again for the first time in public since I was in college (it was required for a drawing class) the fear of someone watching you and *even worse* coming up and asking you "watchya drawing there?!" ACK NO!!!! hahahaha! It actually happened to me a couple weeks ago on the beach. A guy sidled up behind me when I thought it was just me and my husband there (it was a cloudy cool morning and no one but us had chairs on the beach) All of the sudden, this deep voice comes out of nowhere and says, "Just pretend I'm not behind you..." WHAT?! Girl, I just about jumped out of my skin and splotched my watercolors all over the book and sand. Honestly, what the heck? He then said, "sorry I didn't mean to scare you that's why I said 'pretend I'm not here'" Duuuuude, whatever. That was creepy and to make matters worse he didn't walk away after I jumped and nervously laughed. Oh my gosh. Anyway...that's the end of this story and crazy long comment! ;)

Love love love your loose watercolors. Would like to see them on your channel, but only if you would enjoy the process. I once painted the same painting tight and loose and paid close attention to how I felt doing it, and afterward. I liked the product of the tight painting, but I hated the feeling while painting it. The loose one was just like flinging paint, so joyful. After that I just flung paint and had fun. OOxXOO Linda

I loved this - and it is interesting how much things change when an allergy comes on! I started out SO tight - because it was rosemaling - Norwegian patterned decorative painting in oils. Poor student's wife back in 1974, I could buy books or take classes - and books were always here. I had a one year old and getting out was not easy. But I learned to mix colors and use a brush! I am amazed how much I learned from books!
I eventually took classes - and became allergic to turps in those classes. Switching to acrylics because everyone was, I eventually quit... to pick up watercolors several years later. I didn't get to the very tight, precise work because I loved watching paint flow across good paper. I didn't realize how much my being mesmerized by that paint kept me from being tight.
One of these days, I AM going to try acrylics again because I have a lot of understanding under my belt now! I found you a couple of weeks ago and have been delighted! Keep up the cheer!

I think it's this video where you said you used to paint in watercolor a lot and make and sell lots of prints. I wouldn't mind seeing a video on that. How you took a watercolor, cleaned it up, uploaded it digitally and where you got the prints printed. Also the packaging you used to mail them and where you purchased that packaging. I'm moving into that area myself probably and advise would be appreciated. Although I plan to outsource the printing and mailing of my prints. No one ever seems to talk about that, they all seem to mail them personally.... Thanks for sharing! Your videos are great.

I have to say.... I love your watercolor. LOL You've got such a unique style. I don't think you even see it because it comes so easy to you probably. It's also probably why you don't like watercolor because it feels like you are "cheating". I'd alsoI bet you are adhd LOL That's one of our traits - being good at something but feeling guilty because we are good at it and it's easy so we feel like we have to do something harder. LOL I don't know why, but I sure know A LOT of us like that....including me!! LOL So, yeah, your watercolors are amazing. I hope you pursuit it more one day and find the joy in it. Hey, it's an art journey - you never know where it will lead.... I'm happy to be a spectator in yours and you've inspired mine. I love your loose style and I love how you see shapes and color

The statement. About being your own worst critic is true. Your art is amazing tight or loose and honestly I am glad you did not throw any of it away.
I completely am right there with you when it comes to going out where people will watch you make your art. If it is my mixed media which is what I do most I am ok but put me down with a sketchbook and watercolors I am so tense. I am working on getting past that though because I want to get out and do mor reference art for paintings.

I love acrylic, acrylic are my thing. I liked oils too but I'm lazy don't like the clean up. All I used with oil was the oil medium and the paint thinner, same as acrylic except all I use is water.
    I loooove acrylic.
I done portraits in acrylic. Did not use photos, I met the person. Talked to them and painted portraits from memory in acrylics.

Oh blimey I tried not binning anything but I’ve just not got the room - I’m a prolific artist and have folders that hold 80 sheets of paper - there’s like over 60 folders cramped in my cupboard - I binned a few last year
I find it difficult to know if I’ve improved even when I look back at my old work
That grasshopper painting you showed was lovely and yes, I’m wanting everything to be perfect - consequently I end up annoyed that it’s not looking like the reference or a photograph 😁
That’s a lovely watercolor painting you created of the ocean with the houses ☺️

This seems to have only been around a year ago. But I love hearing how you think about progress (judging your own progress, trying to progress, how you are progressing today, etc.). I saw your recent podcast on sketchbooks and keeping your tools sharp. I have some fat birds and will keep working on their proportions 😊. Thanks so much for sharing and the inspiration!

Absolutely wonderful! I love your watercolors, too. They are beautiful. I’m trying to learn how to do Folk Art and I wonder if painting loose would work for that style. So many artist seem to work in tight and precise drawings. I want my art to be fun and give people a smile. I enjoyed this video very much and didn’t see any ugly artwork! - Fran

Thank you so much for your kind words Fran! And YES loose would totally work with folk art - I'm a huge fan of folk art and there are a lot of loose folk artists out there (I'm terrible with remembering names or I would share some with you) There's a folk artist that was shown in the Frist a few years ago that I think lived in TN and he was really loose. He painted a lot on cardboard! and it was magical!

WOW what a great video and inspiration…your watercolor is so beautiful but I understand you not liking it. I also started out in watercolor but ventured into acrylic. I wanted to do oils but have asthma so stayed away from it. I do acrylics. Im so drawn to your style or loose as well but have a difficult time expressing it. I can do detailed easier! but I prefer just slapping paint on…anyhow I love hearing how you started. Love the house. Im still a newbie following you for about 8 months and you answered so many of my questions…thank you for sharing

This is really good to hear and see. I think most of us feel this way. I did a portrait of an old school mate. I used the dry brush technique with black oil paint but painted his eye blue. I when too heavy too quickly on the skin. I finished the portrait and put it up on Facebook. He saw it and went mental over it. So he bought it from me. He thought it was amazing. That is my fist and only sale so far. This happened about three weeks ago.

Hi Sandi, I'm loving your channel. Full of such joy, laughter, and good inspiration!! I'm glad you have gotten to a place where you are willing to share your gift as these videos really are a gift you give to us. Question: what watercolors would you suggest for a beginner who is frustrated by student grade sets but doesn't want to commit a ton of money until they are sure that watercolor is a medium they will stick with? I try to follow along with water color classes but my paints frustrate me so much that I don't find much enjoyment in it.

Hey Lisa - thank you for your kind words! I totally hear ya on sub par watercolors! They can be VERY frustrating! I would try Jerry artaramas brand which is called Turner. I’ve recently tried their gouache and I’m stunned at how good it is. But any of the major brands are good too: Holbein, Windsor and Newton - make sure to watch my Favorite Colors video because you don’t have to buy many colors at all!!! 1 red, 1 yellow and 1 blue will get you a long way!!!!

First - love your art journey! Second - Haha we are butter twins. First time I ever painted with high end watercolor I yelled at Casey that it was like butter - fast forward to 2019 I bought an oil set for $2 at the thrift store - and omg THAT is butter. Oil is my new favorite medium - I am still trying to get past being scared to waste paint. Since acrylics dried so fast - Recently I bought empty paint tubes to put extra paint into. I haven't been able to find that tube thing you use online but I thought about doing it DIY. Cheers!

    • @sandihester
      @sandihester  4 года назад +1

Thank you Elin! YES - I'm a big fan of butter consistency! You could totally do a DIY thing - the main thing is to get your used oil paint in the freezer - you could just scoop it onto the top of a Tupperware container and then put the lid on (so it's sealed) and put it in the freezer - the next time you paint pull it out and let it get to room temp and it's as good as new! No wasting paint!
