Working through all your videos. Discovered your channel during this pandemic and what a light you have been for me. Your spirit and art are beautiful. And you are simply adorable! Thank you for sharing all that you do. 😘
Awe - thanks so much Rebecca! ❤️
I hope that your foot gets better soon, Sandi! I'm totally in love with that bird painting in the background!
Ohhhhh Natasha thank you! I’ll be showing a close up of that when I do my bird video.
Did I miss the studio painting vlog ? I’m invested in the outcome 🥳
Back to finish video - snail mail is the best!
I can SO relate with some of these things you're dealing with. Mainly balancing household responsibilities and wanting to be in the studio (except you sound way more Zen about wanting to enjoy the chores, I just want them to go away. Lol!). I've also given myself a single subject to work on for a year, though I started mine in September, it's an amazing experience to watch yourself grow. Good luck, happy 2020, and I wish you a quick foot recovery!
Lyssa, well, if they went away I'd be ok with that :) - but they aren't so I try to make the most of them! WHAT IS YOUR SINGLE SUBJECT???? Would love to hear more about how it's going with your single subject and what you've learned. Are you finding it looks like a full body of work or are you improving so quickly that it shows (does that make sense?). AND THANK YOU for the comment and watching Lyssa - means so much!!!!
@@sandihester you may have seen on my page, my single subject is the human figure, but I'm taking it section by section each month. I'm filling one whole sketchbook with the intention on improving my skills, getting quicker and more confident, and exploring styles. Outside of that I have a goal of completing only 3 paintings in 2020. So I don't expect to get a body of work out of my project, but to set myself up to hit the ground running in 2021 to start building a collection.
Since I just saw this video today, I was wondering how your year of birds (along with grubs, insects, twigs, etc.) went this year or if you needed to modify part way through. Maybe this is in another video that I haven't gotten to :), but it would be fun to see how your art has evolved/changed/branched off over the year. Thanks!
Hey Stacy! Great question - I did share about this in one of my videos I think - can't remember but basically when lock down started and I knew the year was going to look different I totally changed gears! And I'm so glad I did. I don't think I would have made it through a whole year of birds any ways - I'm really learning that I get bored fast and need to change subjects and mediums a lot. I also think it helps with my youtube channel because there's much more diversity on here now! Thanks for asking!
I adapted (to fit my needs) the fly lady system of cleaning which helps keep daily chores to a minimum. I also do a chunk of my day in studio vs home stuff. Hold up - my art supplies just arrived at post office! 😃
Elin, I've not heard of the fly lady system - going to have to look that up ASAP! Art supplies arriving -that's ALWAYS a fun day!!!
Sandi Hester it’s a system that 1. Helps ppl who have lost control (aka dirty house) but it’s not a one day overhaul it’s tiny habits to get house back on track and stay that way so you’ll never have to spring clean. My house was never a disaster but I always put off all cleaning to one day lol. Now I swish + wipe bathroom after spouse leaves for work, at night I clean kitchen “shins my sink” so I wake up to a nice clean house . And I now have better habits for making bed, opening all the blinds every morning etc. it incorporates major tasks into smaller chunks. If you have questions just lemme know. They do have two free apps now but I found they didn’t work for me I’m a paper person.
Fly Lady rocks! I riffed off her ideas too and use Todoist’s reoccurring custom alarms to remind me to do a chore. No more overwhelm!
Katherine Allsopp I keep a laminated sheet I made on my fridge to look at. In the beginning I wrote it all down, then had sticky notes in my planner I’d move upon completion.
Elin Winblad so old skool!! I love it. Definitely a good back up if the Internet explodes 🤘😂
I really love watching vids from early 2020 when we were all making plans! I can't help think - you don't even know what's coming!! My 2020 plans were to get out and do live workshops more!!!! I also really love that you talked about applying for things in the previous year - and not getting any of it. It's so important for artists to show the rejections as well as acceptance. I say that it's 99% rejection and 1% success, but that success feels 100%. A while ago I started keeping a document of all the things I apply for - my goal is to apply for 100 things. Whether I get accepted or not isn't the point - the process is the point. I apply for things that previously I wouldn't have because I thought I "wasn't ready". It turns out so many good things I would've passed by have happened because I just went for it.
Ohhhh, I like that 100 things - my list would need to be more like 20 - that sounds like a ton to me!
Bits of an artist life.. makes me happy!!
I love your creative endeavors and really enjoy your painting/drawing etc!
Have you ever thought about getting someone in one day a week to do your cleaning, laundry etc? If you decide on a specific date and time, you could use that time to shut your door and work in the studio ... just a thought. Initially it can feel like an indulgence, but if allows you to do your 'job' more, it's worth it!
Thank so much! On the getting help- no, I really do enjoy taking care of our home - sometimes when I’m on a role with creativity it’s all I want to do 😂
Wow! What a sketchbook!! Love all the details!
Thank you so much! Really appreciate it ❤️!
Sandi! First of all I hope your foot heals quickly! It's always a bummer to be held back when you're all ready to go but I hope this rest will recharge you for what will be an awesome and creatively fulfilling new decade!! I will look forward to the oil paints and bird videos, both topics I'm interested in! As for other videos, I'd love to hear more about your journey as an artist. If you've always been an artist or how you got started, how you've changed, or maybe a walkthrough of some of your older work. As someone who has just recently started to explore her creative side, I like hearing about and seeing how artists further in their career have got to where they are! (P.S. It was so so sweet of you to open the card on camera. Thank you for sharing your reaction!♡)
Hmmmmm, that's a good idea for a video - hadn't thought about sharing my journey and old art work is a good idea too! I ALWAYS show my most terrible work to my new students - I want them to see the bad work I kept and how good of a laugh we all get from it now - the worst ones are priceless! Thank you for this idea - I will definitely do this. Hope you get some new subscribers from the video!!!! I love my two cards!
Happy 2020, I am so glad you will continue your you tube channel. I am looking forward to your video on birds. I would like to see how you use the flash paints in your sketchbook. I am mainly a watercolorist , but I am dabbling in gouache cause I like the look of your paintings in your sketchbook. Yes. Mornings are my more creative time as well. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos. All the best in your recovery. Bye for now. Suzi 🙋🏼♀️🌻🐣
Suzi - I'm glad you're glad I'm continuing! Ok, note taken - Flashe paint in sketchbook! Thanks for letting me know you're interested in the bird video - I've been giving a lot of thought into what I want to share and how to best film it and give y'all the best info I can give. Thanks for stopping by and leaving me a comment!!!
I haven't heard you talk about the flash acrylic is all about? Can you please do it sometimes? Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Did I miss the studio painting vlog? Lol , I’m invested.
I am interested to see how your mornings for studio and afternoons for chores/errands/appointments goes Sandi. I am a morning person but give my best self to the errands and chores in the morning?! It’s like I just want to eat my veggies before desert. Or get them out of the way so my mind is clear. Good luck with the foot 💐
Katherine, I feel the same way - I don't like that stuff hanging over me, but the mornings are so quite around our house and that's what I need for creating so I'm going to give that a try - we'll see how it goes! It may end up just being better the way I've been doing things - a little painting, a little laundry, a little painting, some dishes... Sometimes I think that's better on my body because it gives my back and arms a rest from painting. We'll see. THANK YOU for watching and leaving me a comment - REALLY appreciate it!
Katherine, I just went to your RUclips channel and saw your exhibit video of your flowers - UMMM, AMAZING WORK!!! Holy moly, I LLLOOOVVEEEE your work!!! Are you on instagram? If so, would you let me know how I can find you there?
Sandi Hester 🤗 thank you!! Im delighted it resonates with you! Im really love your paintings too!! Your work has so much heart in it. I’m at @katherineallsopp on IG but haven’t been posting much lately with holiday family chaos 🥳🤪
@@katherineallsopp2687 Heading to find you now. Seriously Katherine - you are TALENTED! I am the worst at posting on IG - I go through spurts. Thank you for your kind comment about my work - that means a ton!
Looking forward to learning more about how you approach your birds. I love your sketch books! How do you get past the perfectionist tendency? I would have all the pages torn out if I sketched in pen. I too would like to hear about your journey as an artist and a personal bio of sorts. (As much as you’re comfortable sharing.)
Oh good - I've been hearing from you guys a lot that you want to see more about how to do birds so I've already started filming for that. I think getting past the perfectionist thing takes work. One thing is that my aim is for a loose body of work (in my sketchbook and finished oil pieces). I have lots of things I put in place and practice to do this - it takes work - my natural tendency is to be detailed and tight, but I don't enjoy that process or the finished outcome look of a tight piece. What do you think about me doing a video on that? Techniques for painting loose. Yesterday I was filming while painting in my sketchbook and did a big smear (stuck my hand in wet paint) and decided to not fix it - my guess is no one would even notice the smear. If you trust the process (of not being perfect and just enjoy painting) I promise the outcome of the sketch/painting will look a TON better - the hard part is trusting the process all the way to the end of the painting. ALSO, the main goal really should be to enjoy the process of painting/sketching - I find those that can't loosen up don't paint as much because they can't/don't really enjoy the process and the finished piece always seems too tight and overworked. Just paint - AND ENJOY PAINTING! Thanks for the comment and for watching - REALLY APPRECIATE IT!!!!
Ohhhhh, and I also meant to mention I'm also going to do a video on what you mentioned - sharing my journey - I've had others asking too. Means so much that you guys would want to hear that!!! That may be a good one to film while I'm laid up from foot surgery :).
did you stub your toe on something in your studio?
No :)
Cohesive? :-)
