Of all the episodes of Doctor Who, _Time and the Rani_ is definitely one of them.

Agreed all I liked were the bubbles that caught Bonnie Langford in. If only they had taken her character out. I thought Peri was annoying but Mel took it to an all time low. It is a strange era of the show with a lot of positive retrospective views now being held. I like the fact they took risks and there were some fantastic episodes (we all know the ones) but there was some dreadful rubbish too (Battlefield!). Even writer Ben Aaronovitch didn't like his own story on that occasion
Ace is an interesting conundrum for me. In many ways she is so much better than the previous companions, yet being a family show, her street cred. and those dreadful catch phrases ACE!! bleh! come across as fake and very forced. The two opposing teams in Paradise Towers were the same. You can't make a character a street cred tough fellow if they are unable to act scenes to make it real, due to time slots. She was written much better with her character arc in the last two episodes.
My list of the worst in no particular order... (why would anyone care but I have time on my hands...
      1. Everything that Whittaker was in especially with the fam' except maybe 2 stories over her three year tenure. The worst being The Timeless Child (who would have thought), Legend of the Sea Devils, The Vanquishers, anything with Ryan in it)
      2. Battlefield (yes a cool monster but we all know it was underused)
      3. The Twin Dilemma (which Colin should be thrilled as I doubt it will now rate as the worst DW story of all time. That is if DWM has the guts to do another survey as they seem to want to protect Chibnall's tenure as if to assume it was good!) They never did that to JNT so why were they so forgiving of Chinball? A question worth pondering.)
      4. Time Flight (or soapy dish water monsters)
      5. Time and the Rani (the clowning around and the dreadfully unconvincing bumbling and prat fall of the post regenerative Doctor is simply woefully acted, shot and embarrassing. At the time I thought this would be DW's final season.
      6. Love and Monsters (sorry I'm in the nay camp. I don't need DW to do a send up on itself). I'll watch Rowan atkinson for that and it is much better done.
      7. Warrior's Gate (some people love it but I find it a pretentious yawn)
      8. Fear Her (the Olympic ending-oh dear) Last place in the race.
      sitting through it.
      10. Robot of Sherwood (except for the spoons - the sp0ons were cool)
      11. Dinosaurs on a Spaceship (by guess who?) Childish rubbish and the Doctor being out of character.
      12. Dimensions in Time (Is this allowed?) I doubt this will ever be beaten as the most embarrassing DW feature to exist. That and the Save the Doctor 7 inch single.
      13. Underworld (Even Tom couldn't save this one)
      14. Colony in Space
      15. The Dominators
      16. The Gunfighters (The story that got re-evaluated by the masses and is now considered an excellent piece - well I still think it is boring crap).
      17. The Web Planet (the only released story I have not been able to sit through. This was the only time the lack of money and therefore dreadful unbelievable props made me incapable to invest in what probably is quite a decent script.
      18. The Time Monster (no not the Time Warrior - that one rocks). Benton has a nude baby? The mind boggles.
      19. The Keeper of Traken (oh so bloody serious). Not a fan of most of Peter's later stories. Did Christopher Bidmead write this one? Around this time humour seem to be absent from DW.
      20. Mawdryn Undead - a complete mess and another wasted opportunity with the wonderful Brigadier.

@@MrAllallalla don't forget the washing up bubbles for the monsters! You certainly have pointed out a real shocker there! I remember Peter once saying on some interview whilst walking with the actor who played Turlough (sorry I'm getting older and vague) saying that he thought hald his episodes were a load of rubbish! That I don't agree with but I bet he's glad he got The Caves of Androzani as his last as The Twin Dilemma is definitely one to miss. He might of got all of Colin Baker's scripts if he had stayed on. I always wonder with every incarnation how they would have faired with the scripts that came after their departure. I appreciate they would be written slightly different (tonally) because of the main charcater(s) having his/her own unique take but the storylines I assume etc..., would have remained the same.
Could anyone have made Chibnall's scripts worth watching. If Whittaker had been given Tom Baker's first three seasons would they still have become classics? Cheers.

is an underrated gem. It's just silly, easy watching Doctor who. It isn't the best the show has to offer. But it isn't that bad. I think this story gets a lot of undeserved flack from fans.

T+TRani (as a season opener) is 80 miles apart from the next season opener (Remembrance), which is what audiences really needed to allay their fears and show that good Doctor Who can still be done (even on a shoe-string budget). Personally, I've never had a super-duper issue with T&TRani myself. It's inoffensive turn-your-brain-off "drivel", but not the worst episode in the universe -- and as a 7th Doctor fan, it saddens me to see him get hammered (given the show was running on fumes during back-stage bedlam at the time -- before Cartmel, McCoy and Aldred could start pushing things in a better direction).

I love Missy dearly but I think series 8 missed an opportunity by not bringing back the Rani in a new form, I feel like Moffat really could have done something fun to give early Capaldi a really demented dark mirror character.
Then again the character might have too much JNT stink clinging to her to ever really be effectively retooled. Especially when it's so easy to fall into the trap of her just being dollar store The Master.

    • @DantheManIamIam
      @DantheManIamIam Год назад +5

@@SamyulDavis Considering how self-critical and plagued by his worst impulses Doctor 12 was? Yeah. Not saying it would be actually one-to-one, obviously not, it would be the conflict of "man who struggles with ethics vs person who doesn't bother with them". "What does it mean to be a good man" vs "why does it matter?". Just feels like the potential for a conflict that could actually play to Capaldi's series 8 arc a little better than "would he sink low enough to accept an army of the violated corpses of his friends? Spoilers the answer is no".
I also reiterate that this is assuming a major Moffat retooling of the character. The Rani as she exists would not work at all for this idea.

Ok there's no way this is worse than Twin Dilemma. Part of why Twin Dilemma is so bad is that it aired immediately after Caves Of The Androsani. Imagine the sheer disappointment of watching that episode when it aired in the mid 1980s.

I think it's okay to still not be able to find anything redeeming about something you already couldn't stand; there's nothing wrong with that-- some things just rub us wrong and nothing we do can get rid of that chafe. That said: I really think Dr. Who *now* is at the same place as the beginning of the 7th Doctor era was when Time and The Rani came out: it needed to be the *good* kind of different, and instead we got The Brexit Doctor in 13. To be clear: I don't blame Jodie Whittaker or anyone they cast for that. An actor can only do the best with what they're given, and what they were given was *shit.* And tbh, I feel that way about the end of the Cappaldi era too. They were out of ideas and all they could do is recycle, all the way down to the companions. There was a lot of potential to end the tv series at 12, in an open ended way that allowed the show time to rest and re-invent, the way the Wilderness Years did, for good or ill. I think they need to end the tv show, which panders more to American fans as it is (I can say these things, I am American) since fans from the States are more likely to follow the tv series than any other form of Who media. American fans need to learn how to be happy with the books and Big Finish, until someone who's willing to actually take *real* risks with the tv show comes along.

My first time through classic Doctor Who in 1990-something, Season 24 almost broke me. It's just like you said, Sam -- wacky, tacky, and definitely not fun. McCoy's performance in this story is one of the worst as well. It's the second debut story in a row where the show seems to be saying, "Dislike the main character! I dare you!" I actually like Paradise Towers to a point... but Delta is even worse IMO. I don't think Keff McCulloch gets enough blame for making this one a chore to watch, either.

@@SamyulDavis Paradise Towers is easily the best thing S24 has to offer, though I always wish the mystery about the pool on the top floor was more integrated into the plot and had a better resolution. The society created by the people left behind has some real thought behind it -- something I just don't see in the Lakertyans. I feel like The Happiness Patrol is its spiritual sequel. The "wacky and tacky" have reasons for being in these stories. Your point about Partners In Crime is great too. That story, despite having potentially cringe-worthy elements, has human drama at its heart... Paradise Towers and Happiness Patrol have a political message... what does Time and the Rani have? It's just tedious fluff.

"Why did you pick T&TR?" / "I recently had Covid" ...and you wanted to feel happier about Covid? Did the BBC think they were making Rentaghost? Personal hate: actors playing the Doctor bringing a talent to the character that I know they have in real life: McCoy with the spoons, Smith playing football, Capaldi playing guitar - it breaks my immersion. I understand people enjoying this story in an Orphan 55 munch-popcorn-and-drink-shots way. But if you have a struggling show, never make a character say, "I've had enough of this dwivel!"
