      @@NotchesSewing Great thanks! Not in the industry but I have a collection of rare Belstaff leather jackets. I had one of them altered (luckily I found a great leather tailor and it came out perfect). That’s great. I’ve always found the best way to learn is to take apart quality clothing to see how it’s made. If you don’t have one already, get your hands on an industrial walking foot machine for leather.

    Beautiful job!!! I've sewn for 50 years and got tired just watching you I know how much work that was. That was ALOT of work! This is years of knowledge and expertise right here. I've never done alterations and find it fascinating. The struggle we've all gotten into thinking as we sew what we could or should have done to make it easier but we're to far in. You keep it real. You're an excellent teacher and I'm very grateful for women like you taking your time to teach the next generations because it's not offered anywhere as a basic knowledge like it used to be. I wish you great success, , blessings.

      Gee Terry, you’ve put a tear in my eye! Thanks for your kind words. Even as a dressmaker, alterations really is a totally different ballgame. It is through many years of taking apart clothing, (good and bad) and dealing with many different body shapes, that I have gained my skills. Also running a business, you need to work as efficiently as possible if you want to make a profit. Quality of work must be high so one can be proud of it and also to maintain loyal clients. Thanks for watching and hope you enjoy my other videos as I slowly grow my channel. Have a wonderful day!

    Thank you so much for this video. It's always a little scary to cut into someone else's garment, but after a bit, it's just a little more comfortable. I've sewn for 57 years and am still learning new tips and tricks. I used to sew at an awning shop, so I know that these heavy jobs really are work! You did a beautiful job on this jacket. It looks like something I might attempt in the future, should the opportunity present itself. I'd be interested in also seeing something about increasing the size of some leather items. (many bikers get bigger, not smaller) LOL Thanks again!

      Thanks for watching Nancy😊. Yikes awnings would not be easy to do. I once made my own pair of shade sails to go over my driveway and I literally made them up in a large empty room to accomodate the amount of fabric….. My client was very happy with the outcome of this jacket. What people have to understand is that there are many things to take into consideration when doing major alterations. Pocket placements, linings, seam placements, studs and snaps, thickness of new seams, etc etc and most importantly the budget of the client.
      With this particular jacket, taking in side seams was not an option as the seams were too close to side pockets. And if you took in from sides, the sleeves would be affected etc.. This method was the best option as he still needed the same shoulder width.
      Someone had left a comment (that I have deleted )basically being mean and calling me crazy for doing this and warning others not to do this.
      Every item is and customer need is different. I’ve been doing this for over 35yrs and everyday is a different challenge.
      To make jackets bigger - for bigger tummies, you need to add a triangular piece to sides and lining - to make bigger all over will require adding to sides and sleeves. I have even used thick stretch ribbing on sides and stretch lining on inside instead of leather for extra give.
      Please check out some of my other videos on my channel. You may find something else that’s interesting. Cheers!

    You did a beautiful job! I’m so glad you posted this so that people who do not sew can get an idea of the time and skill involved in doing what seems like a simple alteration. Just wrestling with these bulky items is such a chore that results in sore arms, neck and shoulders! I find it less work to make a garment from scratch than to alter an existing one. I need to shorten the sleeves of a purchased motorcycle jacket soon and I’m dreading it.

    • @NotchesSewing
      @NotchesSewing  Год назад +1

      Thanks Frank. This is my previous answer about the sides-
      If you look closely at the jacket, there are zippers and pockets that are too close to the side seam to alter the side panels. Also, if you were to alter the sides, you would also need to take in the sleeves. There’s also an action back feature over the sleeves. Because he needed the overall chest measurement to be smaller, you wouldn’t be able to achieve this without pull apart the sides and sleeves. Of course this is possible, but you also have to factor in the time and cost of the job. That would easily have been triple the cost. In the end, it is up to the client after discussing different options and prices.
      Thanks so much for watching.😊

    Video could use chapters as it's long, tailoring leather is a specialist skill, and a good one to kno despite the intricacy of the process, since only the biggest city in my country has tsilors capable of this and a lot of people who need leatherwork done are typically in the countryside.
    It's a dying skill, leather offers function and durability while modern fashion uses cheap, ill fitting articles that half the time never even get worn. -polar opposites.
    Getting leather and other heavy, thick, quality clothes, and getting those tailored to you will make you stand out.
    So thanks for posting this video, the skill is very useful for a lot of people who can't really get to a leathersmith tailor, fixing leather is a big one too, it would be wasteful to throw out something an animal died for bc of some minor damage.

    Loved watching this, I do a lot of DIY at home tailoring and I was curious if you have any tips on altering a leather coat with too long sleeves. I don't want to cut the sleeves because I like the folds it makes when I put my hands in the side pockets. I was thinking if it's a good idea to attach an elastic band on the inside of the sleeves to hold it up a bit. Maybe with help of buttons attached on the inside sleeves and the elastic with button holes. What do you think? What would you do?

      Notches Sewing Hi Ang. Yes, I’d definitely be interested in watching them. As much as I love to wear perfect fitting clothes, I am nowadays nervous to take them anywhere simply because last time I took seven long-sleeve Ralph Lauren shirts, they were a tad messy when returned to me. Sure, I wanted to kill the two Chinese ladies responsible, but I just simply said thanks and knew I’ll never return there...and I also told many people about my experience and to stay away from there. $100+ per shirt plus an additional $30 (each) to alter them - all gone to waste! Hi Evil Twin, sorry to hear about your bad experience. I have come across many horror stories....As a professional running a clothing alterations business, I see it all the time. I regularly fix poor work that had previously been done elsewhere. Although I am able to gain a new client , I do feel bad that they have to pay twice for an alteration that should’ve been done properly the first time. No one should have to go through the stress and frustration. May I a ask what you had done to the shirts and where? If you just took to a dry cleaners, often they do not specialise and can only do basic work. I have over 35 yrs experience in clothing alterations with a dressmaking and leather background , so am pretty confident with what can and cannot be done . Did they offer you a refund or ask for a chance to correct the work?
      I had a look at the Mackage website. Their stuff looks great! Shouldn’t be a problem in most cases to shorten leather sleeves but you must find someone with experience in leather.

      @@NotchesSewing " *May I ask what you had done to the shirts and where* "
      Sure. They all needed to altered *sleeves shortened* because I simply have a great detest for sloppy-loose fitting clothes. To make matters worse, I did pay an extra $50 "priority fee" to get them finished in 7 days (as opposed to the 7-10 days I was initially given). I ordered all shirts from Mr Porter, once they came out the package, I tried a couple on before I realized they all needed to be altered. I took them to a local "Taylor/Alteration Shop" in Virginia Beach. I had been to them before (friend referred me there) and had given them 10 pairs of jeans to shorten......So, I didn't think I was going to have any issues.
      When I got there, It was 16:30 hrs and they were still working on my shirts. They had that "we need to finish these shirts quick" look on their face! My shirts were promised to be finished at 14:00hrs... Anyway, when I received them, I looked them over and almost started fuming when I saw thread dangling from a few -unacceptable! Also, there were parts inside the cuffs that were undone!!! I'm starting to get mad thinking about it😬😬
      But, being the person I am, I have never and will never be a rude customer. As much as I have wanted to...to uhm...release my anger, It's just something I can't and will not do. Being able to refrain shows courage....
      They fixed the four that I handed to them. When I got back to my car, I looked them over once again..and I found three with a tad of cloth hanging (inside cuffs). I took them back and quietly pointed to the areas. I had no energy to say anything nor argue. It was almost 17:00hrs and I needed to be at the airport at 20:00hrs as I had a plane to catch...three planes, actually!!
      That experience reminded me of a book I read a long time ago: Geoffrey Gitomer's *Customer Satisfaction is Worthless* : *Customer Loyalty is Priceless*
      EDIT:** No refund was offered. To be fair, even if that was the case, I wouldn't had accepted all of it because I'm aware that time and work was put into the clothes...and that costs money. I don't ever want, nor expect a service to be free of charge. Ever. Even when mistakes are made. There are some things I'm fully against.
      EDIT:** Chance to correct the work was absent, as well. Neither did I have the time as I had three planes to catch ( trip toJapan)

    thanks, that was very helpful. is there a way to sew the shoulders shorter? I bought an old jacket very cheap, but it is a bit big. It looks a little bit like it has shoulder pads when I wear her. excuse my bad English

    • @NotchesSewing
      @NotchesSewing  4 года назад +2

      Hi J S, I think you mean that the shoulders are too wide and you need the jacket shoulder width to be narrowed. You can do this by removing the sleeves and reshaping the shoulders and armhole, but you will also need to take in the sides of the jacket as well. When you narrow the shoulder, the armhole becomes bigger so you need to make sure it fits the original sleeve measurement.
      If the jacket has a raglan style sleeve, the shoulder can be reshaped to have a narrower curve. Hope this helps. Cheers, Angela

    • @NotchesSewing
      @NotchesSewing  3 года назад

      It all depends on the style of the jacket. You must take into consideration the placement of the pockets as you may lose them by shortening. Going past your belt doesn’t sound like it’s that long as your belt sits on your waist? Always best to take it to a couple of tailors that are experienced with sewing leather and get some quotes.

    • @NotchesSewing
      @NotchesSewing  2 года назад

      Thanks Chris.

    I just recently bought a cheap leather jacket to add to my collection (first brown jacket). I'm a size small, but this jacket is a size medium. When i tried it on, I noticed it doesn't look too bad, just _slightly_ oversized, and the sleeves noticeably too long (an issue i have even with jackets my own size!)
    I really like the style and would just like to know if you think it'd be worth taking for an alteration? It's faux leather so it won't last considerably long, but I'd definitely make the most of it while I can. I just don't think I should wear it out yet due to the sleeve length. If it's not worth an alteration, I'd likely just settle for getting the sleeves shortened to my desired length.
    (As an aside, I only got a jacket tailored once and I made sure to leave _at least_ a $10 tip. Jobs like these are no walk in the park, as we can clearly see from this brilliant demonstration. I appreciate what you do!)

    • @NotchesSewing
      @NotchesSewing  2 года назад +1

      It’s best to get some quotes for the alterations as only you can decide if it is worth it. The work involved for faux leather is not that different than real leather. Sleeves that are too long will always make the garment look too big for you. At least do that and not take in if you want to wear it. All the best!

Even though a good tailor could do it, they most likely won’t have heavy enough to machinery to sew it into the jacket, Especially if you are saying it is thicker than the one I worked on. Vjekoslav 2012 I was wondering too. Not because I want her to do any work for me, but just curious if maybe he could’ve just purchased a brand new perfectly fit jacket.

      I asked the client the same question if could not buy another. They no longer made that particular style and he lived all the pocket placements etc. He was very happy with the results as he was told by others that it could not be done. Thanks for watching😊

      Can you not return it for that reason?

      Notches Sewing it was a little while ago and it didn’t accrue to me that it had a weird seam unlike the one they advertised so I don’t think I can return it because it has been more then 30 days hopefully they can do a store credit type deal

      There is usually a center back seam to create a fitted shape or it is designed that way for a leather jacket so that the back can be cut in 2 pieces and not one big one. When cutting leather skins, you want to be able to cut as many pieces as possible from one skin to save costs. Even though it is over 30 days, it doesn’t hurt to ask if you can return as it is not as advertised. Good Luck!😊🤞
