    Suede and “genuine leather are NOT the same thing. Also, YKK zippers are not a sign of a cheap garment of any kind, they are actually quality zippers. Other than that, it was a good video.

      Genuine leather just means real leather. In typical mall items, genuine just means the lowest quality leather that qualifies as real leather. But in higher-end quality items that source their leather from the best tanneries such as Horween, genuine = high quality.

    I received a Schott Perfecto jacket from my father almost 7 years ago which was too small for him but fit me like a glove. It's been a great 3 season jacket that I've taken with me to all of the Nordic countries and survived multiple winters in Iceland, Denmark, and Sweden. I recently had it taken to a shop for some restoration because I've beat the hell out of it but I can't recommend these jackets enough.

    Remember gents, going for used clothes is always an option instead of buying cheap clothes. I know it's a bit harder for men since men just don't sell their used clothes as often but I was an uni student and bought most of my clothes used and rebuilt my wardrobe on a very tight budget after losing weight. It's not uncommon to see stuff being sold for less than 10% of the price of a new one. Most of my dress shirts cost me 1€ / $ each and I just tailored them a bit myself for a good fit

      I recently bought a bunch of old used leather jackets off eBay. The problem is it's often difficult to assess wear and tear from photos, so you're taking a gamble, and individual private sellers often don't want to deal with returns. Buying used in person would avoid all that, but then you're limited to a much smaller offering, which is basically a no-go if you have an uncommon body size (as I do, being skinny).

    • @kfl611
      @kfl611 Год назад +3

      And if you buy used clothing either online or at a store, if in a store, look for a store that is located in a swankier part of town. Rich people donate things for tax write offs all the time and you can pick up high quality item so much cheaper than the off the rack price.

    • @ronpruitt3832
      @ronpruitt3832 2 года назад +22

      This is the only problem I had with this video. YKK is a huge zipper manufacturer and they have different quality levels of zippers. Their zippers are used by jacket makers all over the world. You find YKK zippers on many high quality jackets. I actually have never heard of the two zipper brands that were mentioned in the video as high end zippers.

    • @drazenbabich
      @drazenbabich 2 года назад +21

      @@ronpruitt3832 Agree. For quality leather jackets I always look for either YKK or Talon zippers. All my high-end moto leather jackets come with robust YKK zippers, there is a good reason why makers use those. The other two brands of zippers the video talks about I heard of, but were never linked with the top quality leather jackets, they are very common on high-end fashion brands which are unfortunately more about appearance and looks rather than function. Dissing YKK zippers was a big faux pas in this video.

    It all depends on many levels. In my country for example it is well known that store owners like to buy the things super cheap but sell them as top premium items. So paying top price for leathet jacket isnt always a guarantee that it will be durable. I have two of them, one was super expensive, the other was slightly above the med. price range. The second one appeares to be more durable. There is also the style that is available at the store. I remember asking the seller for a typical biker jacket (the one with belt at the waist and sholder epaulettes, rivets etc.) But ended up with different style because of what was available.

      imperfections. Only the finest quality hides make the cut for this category of leather. CE approved armour in the shoulders, elbows and back secure this jacket its CE Level A safety rating and the double layers of quilted leather at the impact zones (shoulder and elbows) add even more abrasion resistance. The leather will also mould to the shape of your body with time, but the accordion stretch leather panelling at the sides will help with movement right away. As with so many of their jackets, Helstons has added a hard to achieve seam-sealed membrane to the Tracker. Together with the inner thermal waistcoat that you can remove as temperatures dictate, this jacket is great at adapting to changeable riding conditions.

Highly advice on you getting a cowhide or steer / horsehide leather jacket, they're great

    Average leather needed for leather jacket is 35 sqft, average price would be around 150PKR per sqft, which is below 1USD. So that's below 35usd for leather, you can add 6-8 usd for lining and YKK zippers (and people who know anything about leather jackets know YKK is one of the best in market, most people rank it as second best worldwide. This video got it completely wrong when it comes to YKK zippers), buttons etc. Labor in Pakistan is around 600 to 1000 pkr per jacket so that adds another 5 usd. Total cost is 46 to 48 usd for a good quality calf or lamb leather jacket. Cow leather and suede are cheaper, below 70 cents per sqft. Manufacturers normally keep 5usd to 10usd profit per jacket depending on your quantity.
    And of course if you buy in bulk, cost drop another 5 to 10 usd.
    You can add in taxes, shipment charges, delivery charges, marketing cost and still still get a really good profit around 70 to 75 usd if you sell around 150 usd.
    ((:
    I have two clothing brands, one in Pakistan and other in US, first was in US selling leather jackets online. We also do manufacturing.
    I personally sell my jackets around 220 to 350 USD in US, UK, Australia, Canada, Europe and 60 to 90 usd in Pakistan. Some people might think my price is really high for international market, well tbh it is but not because I have a lot of profit margin, it's mainly because we only do made to order Jackets in US, we don't keep stock so that costs us a lot in delivery charges, around 80 usd normally to ship from Pakistan to US.

    Great video, very informative, however the video falls short on one aspect. You don't actually tell anyone of good places to purchase quality leather jackets. That would have made the video complete.

    Boy, this video didn't say much and still managed to get a lot wrong. YKK produces some of the best zippers in the industry. Check out your highest end technical gear and they will all almost exclusively source from YKK.

    Image search almost any current generic leather jacket on the market, you'll find the EXACT same jacket that varies by hundreds of dollars and most come from Pakistan, most of these companies just stitch their tag on it and jack up the price, 9 times out of 10 this is the case. Claims are made but in actuality youre just getting hosed.
    The only other option is to find a reputable company who makes in house and buy one off the rack or get one custom made so you know exactly what youre getting and that aint gonna be inexpensive by any means. If they made it they should know the type of leather and the thickness. Fit is everything and a leather jacket either fits you perfectly or it looks absolutely dumpy there is no in between.

    As far as I have heard genuine leather is a loose term, it could mean low quality leather or fake leather with some leather mixed into it. Either way it is not recommended.

    There are very qualitative leather jacket built in internally with polyester. Should not be cotton or whatever to prove its quality. Polyester can be more breathable then cotton!! See the athletic clothes mainly polyester! Anyway thanks

    Totally wrong about the YKK zippers. They're top-notch, thick, durable and stronger than any other brand of zippers, unless your paying thousands upon thousands for a over priced leather jacket. I purchased my biker leather jacket 32 years ago at the age of 18 and it's been through hell but it has that perfect broken-in look, aged very well, strong as the day I purchased it and the stitching is top-notch. It has outlasted everything that I've ever worn since and probably will ever own.

    Op shops are a fantastic places for leather jackets. Perhaps leather being so durable, people want a style change after 2 decades and donate them. Unfortunately none of the details described in the first half are displayed on the sewn-in tags. Perhaps the leather type and sourcing is only found in up-market stores' labels.
