Suede and “genuine leather are NOT the same thing. Also, YKK zippers are not a sign of a cheap garment of any kind, they are actually quality zippers. Other than that, it was a good video.
@@cosmos1651 Suede is the side of the hide that faces the inner flesh of the cow. It's sanded such as that there is a raised nap on the surface (like tiny hair). Genuine leather just means real leather. In typical mall items, genuine just means the lowest quality leather that qualifies as real leather. But in higher-end quality items that source their leather from the best tanneries such as Horween, genuine = high quality.
I received a Schott Perfecto jacket from my father almost 7 years ago which was too small for him but fit me like a glove. It's been a great 3 season jacket that I've taken with me to all of the Nordic countries and survived multiple winters in Iceland, Denmark, and Sweden. I recently had it taken to a shop for some restoration because I've beat the hell out of it but I can't recommend these jackets enough.
This is the only problem I had with this video. YKK is a huge zipper manufacturer and they have different quality levels of zippers. Their zippers are used by jacket makers all over the world. You find YKK zippers on many high quality jackets. I actually have never heard of the two zipper brands that were mentioned in the video as high end zippers.
@@ronpruitt3832 Agree. For quality leather jackets I always look for either YKK or Talon zippers. All my high-end moto leather jackets come with robust YKK zippers, there is a good reason why makers use those. The other two brands of zippers the video talks about I heard of, but were never linked with the top quality leather jackets, they are very common on high-end fashion brands which are unfortunately more about appearance and looks rather than function. Dissing YKK zippers was a big faux pas in this video.
I have never had a problem with YKK zippers. The other issue with this video was the statement “genuine leather and suede are the same thing”. That is completely false.
Remember gents, going for used clothes is always an option instead of buying cheap clothes. I know it's a bit harder for men since men just don't sell their used clothes as often but I was an uni student and bought most of my clothes used and rebuilt my wardrobe on a very tight budget after losing weight. It's not uncommon to see stuff being sold for less than 10% of the price of a new one. Most of my dress shirts cost me 1€ / $ each and I just tailored them a bit myself for a good fit
I recently bought a bunch of old used leather jackets off eBay. The problem is it's often difficult to assess wear and tear from photos, so you're taking a gamble, and individual private sellers often don't want to deal with returns. Buying used in person would avoid all that, but then you're limited to a much smaller offering, which is basically a no-go if you have an uncommon body size (as I do, being skinny).
And if you buy used clothing either online or at a store, if in a store, look for a store that is located in a swankier part of town. Rich people donate things for tax write offs all the time and you can pick up high quality item so much cheaper than the off the rack price.
Schott leather jackets are some of the best hands down. I see one of their jackets in the video. Really heavy full grain leather and their hardware is exceptional. No wonder they offer lifetime warranty on hardware.
It all depends on many levels. In my country for example it is well known that store owners like to buy the things super cheap but sell them as top premium items. So paying top price for leathet jacket isnt always a guarantee that it will be durable. I have two of them, one was super expensive, the other was slightly above the med. price range. The second one appeares to be more durable. There is also the style that is available at the store. I remember asking the seller for a typical biker jacket (the one with belt at the waist and sholder epaulettes, rivets etc.) But ended up with different style because of what was available.
YKK is a solid choice for a heavyweight durable leather jacket. It wouldn't make sense to but a slim light zipper on a heavy leather. Also per this video, the jackets you make w J.L. Rocha use cheap polyester lining and have bad stitching are really poor quality lol
When I didn't have much money I used to buy cheap pants, and the zipper would always break. That's embarrassing to be out in public, when your zipper brakes and unzips itself and won't zip closed again. ha ha ha. I stopped buying that brand of pants.
I had cheap and have one of quality. Cheap like pu, fake leather, patch leather, etc... last about a year or two. Expensive quality jacket is still with me, soft, pliable, can stretch to some point, have it for like 6 years and still new. Stopped buying jackets every year.

The problem is just that "you GET what you pay for". If you know exactly what size, style, material, dye color etc is perfect to suit you then its worth paying top $. But jackets are so difficult to pick perfectly and you are stuck with what you buy. I have to get affordable jackets because most likely i will only end up actually being satisfied with 1 in 4 that i buy. I say if you want a really good jacket you will need to try on every style in about every size. Then think for a long while on wich style, size and color you actually want before spending good money on 1. Only then will you have any hope of being satisfied with your choice compared with the cost
My first leather jacket was less than 80 dollars brand new, artisan made here in Mexico, in lambskin, pretty nice, lightweight and supple, or the one i got in winter which is a black pebbled cowhide cafe racer cut from a larger jacket, i bought it used for 30 bucks and i gave the man in the thrift shop a pair of boots (Which i will try to buy if he has a good price...) and a leather coat in exchange, modding it in a specialized leather tailor workshop costed around 70 bucks and it's a jacket that will last decades so... Highly advice on you getting a cowhide or steer / horsehide leather jacket, they're great I am now having made a calfskin jacket, 75 bucks, already paid some of it, gonna pick it up in a couple weeks. Greetings
Average leather needed for leather jacket is 35 sqft, average price would be around 150PKR per sqft, which is below 1USD. So that's below 35usd for leather, you can add 6-8 usd for lining and YKK zippers (and people who know anything about leather jackets know YKK is one of the best in market, most people rank it as second best worldwide. This video got it completely wrong when it comes to YKK zippers), buttons etc. Labor in Pakistan is around 600 to 1000 pkr per jacket so that adds another 5 usd. Total cost is 46 to 48 usd for a good quality calf or lamb leather jacket. Cow leather and suede are cheaper, below 70 cents per sqft. Manufacturers normally keep 5usd to 10usd profit per jacket depending on your quantity. And of course if you buy in bulk, cost drop another 5 to 10 usd. You can add in taxes, shipment charges, delivery charges, marketing cost and still still get a really good profit around 70 to 75 usd if you sell around 150 usd. ((: I have two clothing brands, one in Pakistan and other in US, first was in US selling leather jackets online. We also do manufacturing. I personally sell my jackets around 220 to 350 USD in US, UK, Australia, Canada, Europe and 60 to 90 usd in Pakistan. Some people might think my price is really high for international market, well tbh it is but not because I have a lot of profit margin, it's mainly because we only do made to order Jackets in US, we don't keep stock so that costs us a lot in delivery charges, around 80 usd normally to ship from Pakistan to US.
Totally wrong about the YKK zippers. They're top-notch, thick, durable and stronger than any other brand of zippers, unless your paying thousands upon thousands for a over priced leather jacket. I purchased my biker leather jacket 32 years ago at the age of 18 and it's been through hell but it has that perfect broken-in look, aged very well, strong as the day I purchased it and the stitching is top-notch. It has outlasted everything that I've ever worn since and probably will ever own.

Highly advice on you getting a cowhide or steer / horsehide leather jacket, they're great
I am now having made a calfskin jacket, 75 bucks, already paid some of it, gonna pick it up in a couple weeks.

I have two clothing brands, one in Pakistan and other in US, first was in US selling leather jackets online.
Where can I look?

Totally wrong about the YKK zippers. They're top-notch, thick, durable and stronger than any other brand of zippers, unless your paying thousands upon thousands for a over priced leather jacket. I purchased my biker leather jacket 32 years ago at the age of 18 and it's been through hell but it has that perfect broken-in look, aged very well, strong as the day I purchased it and the stitching is top-notch. It has outlasted everything that I've ever worn since and probably will ever own.
I have a street line Hien gericke jacket and I literally cannot find it on the internet
