@@jimbojimbo6873 Agreed but having conversations with interesting people about watches is something he seems to enjoy. To a lot of old Hondinkee fans he is still the face of the company and if you read the comments, most of those fans are not too keen on the new corporate approach.
It’s cool to hear about the high end stuff some times but these conversations often miss the more entry level of watches. The true mark of a collector in my mind in verity in styles and price levels. Maybe when we get to see his collection there will be some more variety.
Not wanting to be a ballbreaker here, but Kevin is a huge watch guy. And it was clear wasn't comfortable speaking about other brands except for AP because he is an ambassador. So it was ok to hear his story, but too bad there is a lot more to tell and he wasn't "allowed" to do it
Sometimes it feels like a lot of celebrities are just anointed with watch knowledge from day one but it's refreshing to see that Kevin came into the hobby the same we all did, just by being interested in time and had the same journey as us. Start off with fashion watches, get some 'well known' pieces, get burned on vintage and eventually figure out what works for us in our day-to-day. For one of the world's best known collectors, that was brilliant to hear. Ben is absolutely brilliant at these interviews too. Hopefully this lends itself to more of these and we can get Mark Wahlberg, Jackie Chan and Corey Gamble on with their full collections.
"Annointed with watch knowledge from day one." What? It's either you care about it enough to learn it or you don't get it at all. No one comes out just knowing about all watches. Plus, a lot of people nowadays are only into watches because they believe it is the "it" thing to do. I remember going to a hodinkee meet-up where all that was there were watch nerds like myself. Men and women alike. I loved it! Ben used to bring in some of his personal pieces and talk about it with all of us. It was a great day and age. Now, it has become a circus. There are people in this watch game who don't even care about watches for the beauty of the timepieces. They just care about what they can sell it for. It's a scarier world. But, as the saying goes, "you just have to roll with the punches" and keep it going.
@@Kcseales I think they mean a lot of celebrities act like they got into watches knowing everything there is to know about collecting. Without telling the story about "learning" the watch collecting hobby.

This two guys couldn't be any more different even if one of them was an extraterrestrial, yet they can get together, find common ground and bond around watches. And then people ask why do we love this hobby.
Kevin seems like a nice guy. His take on watches is funny. "Nobody knew what watch I was wearing" is the basic thesis of why he gets into serious watches... completely opposite from most collectors who would tell you to buy what you like and buy for yourself instead of trying to fit into a club. Kevin is so big now he could probably make invicta cool to a group of people but he's still trying to fit in. Honestly interesting.
It's an interesting commentary on the watch world in general. Why is a watch desirable and how subjective that is. Value and cost are two very different things.
@Richard Lloyd yes. Also on the idea of investments. I think that started as a way to justify these purchases to significant others and now seems to be the mantra of so many... I'd love if Kevin just said, "I'm rich and I like buying cool stuff"
Everybody into watches are trying to fit in (in my opinion). It is just a matter of what ballpark you are playing in. Some really high end watches may not be known by the average person (giving the illusion we do not care about fitting in) but at that point you are playing ball with the group who "when you know, you know" as Kevin said it.
I would really really love to see Jay Z on TW! He was collecting watches way before any other significant pop culture personalities were flashing them. He never followed the pack and I bet he’s very well versed into the significance of the houses and references he selects. Ben - make it happen!
All millionaires do the exact same thing. Especially non-celebrities. You have no idea how much money these guests have. I bet if John Mayer was on here you wouldn't say that.
Respect to Kevin for being straight up honest. "I'm the AP spokesperson, which is awesome, but it's hard to not be able to wear other brands that I like too." Meanwhile, Floyd mayweather said, "Hublot is the greatest watch brand in the world..." So many "influencers" and artists just say things because they are paid to do so.
Regardless of the fame and the money Kevin Hart is always so chilled, humble and funny. I love how he broke into a sketch and had to restrain himself. He really knows that tomorrow isn't promised and life is fragile.
I like Kevin, but his approach is one dimensional. There are a few very base personal stories, but sadly he seems rooted in clout chasing, showing off his wealth and blind consumerism - not one single word about cultivating an appreciation for the craftsmanship and history behind each watch.
To me this episode really emphasizes the superficiality/shallowness of the culture of owning a $100k watch just because everyone knows how much it costs. You a real baller? Good interview and good chat. Shame Kevin couldn't look at him in the eye when he shook his hand at the end. Everything felt legitimate until that point.

While that's okay, I didn't feel the connection with the video similar to how I felt when I watched the Bethany Frankel. At the end of the day, these are obsolete pieces of tech. We can get the time from a number of different sources more accurately. This is more art and Kevin feels like the guy that collects the piece of art that would show him to be rich and famous and successful, which is also okay.
Is it me or did that seem like hard work for Ben? Talking watches or talking wealth? No real insight or genuine non sponsored watch talk. It didn't even seem like Kev could talk in any real detail about any of his APs other than what precious material they were. I think they're more jewellery for him than anything else. What talking watches episode goes harder on cars than watches. Bit of a let down, probably says more about Kev as a "watch collector" than it does about Ben as a host.
