To this day I still don't get the Easy mode final boss. Is it like a fake Andross? Was the whole base a big mind trick? Seriously I really don't get the whole Robot Andross thing!
It's a decoy. The credits make this somewhat clear. Since instead of showing "The End". It shows Andross' face laughing at you. Implying he's still alive.
_Data_Drain_ I only remember seeing that once. Every other time I beaten it, it always showed "The End" regardless what difficulty I took. Maybe I am just remembering it wrong.
You absolutely have to fight Andross' brain by coming in from Area 6 in order to get the true ending. Beating Robot Andross automates the entire escape sequence, the brain one (you clearly fight in all range mode) makes YOU have to escape yourself by following Fox's father out.
Don't worry about the Star Fox 64 3D physical copy prices guys, it's already been reprinted as a "Nintendo Select" title for a MUCH cheaper price in Europe now, but for my fellow Americans, just wait and hope the reprint hits our shores very soon... or if Star Fox 64 hits the US eShop, whichever comes first ...unless you already have an original print 3DS copy or an N64 copy

This was my introduction to the series and it still holds up as one of the best Nintendo 64 games. This is the one game where I can recite quotes by memory with no problem. Its scary on levels such as Corneria.
A series they rebooted itself after just one title? My first thought is Prey. About the soundtrack, I’ve never played a single Star Fox game, but I know the theme from Zoness very well and i freaking love it. I first encountered it in an old custom Zelda quest someone made for the Zelda Classic fan-made Zelda game maker probably about 15 years ago and was like, “What song is this?! This is amazing!” I’ve never forgotten it
in my opinion, this is the best game on the N64. Most people I know tend to say that Ocarina of Time or Goldeneye is the best game but it's hard to deny that those games have aged. Star fox 64 has not on the other hand and I believe that if a game can stand the test of time, then it must be something special and Star Fox 64 is something truly special. One of my all time favorite games and one of my examples of a perfect game.
I'd agree that Goldeneye has certainly aged (that single control-stick style has certainly aged since the invention of dual analog sticks), but I'd deny (largely) that OoT has aged poorly. It's still a great adventure and an amazing formula that was used up til Skyward Sword.
EpicOdysseus Yes, OoT's formula is still used today but just because that fact is true doesn't mean OoT does it the best. Just about every other 3D Zelda game that has come out in the years since OoT uses the formula to greater effect and in general just plays better. Hence why I say OoT has aged. When they remade it for the 3DS, they actually did have to do a lot of tweeking to make it easier to play. They had to tighten up the controls (though I found it a little harder to play with the Joy Pad) and they had to change some of the graphics around, particularly in the Water Temple so it was less frustrating to play on top of adding some new things to the interface for the sake of convince. Then look at the 3DS remake of Starfox 64. Very little was changed apart from the graphics and the reason for that is that nothing needed to be changed. And I know some people will say that Star Fox 64 is a much simpler game but that's part of the reason why it has aged so well. It kept things simple, kept in mind what the hardware could do well and focused on making the game fun above all else. OoT was just a little too abishous for it's time and has thus suffered from age.
Truth be told, they did it because they didn't want another Bad Fur Day to happen. Not saying that it was a bad game, just how Nintendo treated Rare....changed after BFD. I can't be the only one that thinks that either, since Nintendo clearly could of kept Rare if they wanted to.
Johnny it's one of the few people that have never fully experienced this game, not counting that time that he saw it in action on the BSC commentary. On the other hand, there is people that had played it to death, and, much like me, have learned every single dialog on this game, It is amazing to watch a review of someone fresh and new to this version. Thanks Johnny! And yeah, good luck with Adventures, I like the game but certainly it's not for everyone.

7:49 it's worth mentioning that, for those who don't know, the reason everyone's animated that way, is that as a nod to Miyamoto's love for marionette drama's, such as Gerry Anderson's Thunderbirds, Capt Scarlet, Fireball XL5, etc, the animators had the character's mouths pop open and closed like a puppet.

Totally disagree on the music! This is some of the best video game music I've ever heard (I can remember all from childhood), the orchestration is amazing along with melody and harmony! Part of the reason I'm a musician today! Great retrospective overall! 👍🏿👍🏿
This game is the reason I love Star Fox. I have put in so much hours into this game. I didn't get all the planet medals but I went through all the trails. I never played the other games but as a fan I will get to the others at some point.
When I did my Let's Play of this game, I took the time to look up a couple of wiki sources for background information on planets and characters. Turns out there is a lot more explained on them, like how Katt and Falco were part of a gang and Katt even had a crush on Falco.
Starfox Adventures is pretty decent as an adventure game, just that everyone hates it cause it's not Starfox. Jontron didn't help either due to all the menial shit he points out that is more of nitpicking than an actual criticism.
Yeah while the Starfox Adventures and Nuts & Bolts reviews had funny moments they're my least favorite reviews of his cause he hated them for being so different. And yes I actually liked Nuts & Bolts. Is it as good as the first two Banjo-Kazooie games? Hell no. But at least the humor and charm is still there.

Final Fantasy doesn't really have any overarching narratives though. Every game is in a unique setting with unique characters and a unique history. When it's baked into the series core essence, I don't think it's right to call it a reboot.
The reason I said the marathon would be short is because most of the Star Fox games are really short. I honestly forgot about Adventures and Command is going to take forever in order to get all the endings.

This game I have spent so much time on playing it alone and having a blast in the process. So many childhood memories playing this beloved classic and eventually buying it on the Virtual Console and 100% the game entirely, including the infamous Expert Mode. Which by the way John, if you thought Level 3 in the original Star Fox was bad, Expert Mode can and will put you to the test. Trust me. I've done it before and it is insane. And now, time for some Star Fox Fun Facts and Lore! 1. The reason why Fox knows Bill in the first place is that Fox and Bill used to be in a Military Academy long before the events of SF64. It wasn't until after Fox received word from Peppy that he and his father, James McCloud, had been betrayed by Pigma and James was captured (then most likely proceeded to be tortured to death) by Andross. It was at that point that Fox would go on to create a new Star Fox team to not only honor his father's legacy, but to take Andross down. 2. As for why Falco and Katt know each other us because Falco used to be part of a gang with Katt. This is explored a little further in the Star Fox manga. Yes, there is in fact an official Star Fox manga. It bridges the gap between the events of SF64 and Adventures, which also explains a certain event at the end of Adventures. I recommend giving it a read, it's some good stuff. Though Falco being part of a gang before joining the Star Fox team does explain why he can be a jerk sometimes. 3. There is a surprising amount of background detail in certain areas of the game. For example, the planet Zoness used to be a galactic tropical resort and the birth world of Falco. Of course, Andross' forces invaded Zoness and made it a toxic waste dump. You can imagine how hurt the bird was about his once great home being turned to crap. 4. In the European version of Star Fox 64, Lylat Wars, there was an extra voice option added called Lyatian. This voice option helped mimic the SNES voices if anyone was curious enough to hear it. 5. Gaining all of the Score Attack medals in the normal game, aside from unlocking the infamous Expert Mode, also netted players the ability to use the Landmaster in multiplayer and to those who were brave enough to net all of the medals in Expert Mode (like me) you will gain the ability to on foot in multiplayer as well.
Metroid Zero is a reboot after only 2 game releases, I mean there was fusion and super metroid and the return of samus, but since zero came out around zero, its almost the same.

PLEASE JOHNNY, PLEASE don't hate Star Fox Adventures. It's like, the cornerstone of mah childhood. I know now it's not really a "Star Fox" game, but it's still a damn good game.
I get why it is hated but the fact that nothing about it is really bad in anyway really makes me feel that people are just far too nitpicky and have too much fun ruining a game that even if it had not started out as the game it became was still an excellent game. It was a lot of fun. It actually gave fucking birth to a series instead of just reboots.
+Derp Mcderpinton I consider it a reboot because there are certain story elements in Catalyst that would make no sense whatsoever if it was a prequel to the original. For example, Noah is not Merc. Also, Cat playes a similar role in both games, but they are different because the original Cat was raised by her father, and the Catalyst Cat was raised by Kruger because Cat's father was killed alongside the mother.
I've never played Adventures but man I love Assult. It's so underrated and gets bashed for no reason. Yea it's not 64 but to say it's bad is just flat out wrong.
Well here's something a lot of people seem to forget. You can get to the good ending of the game WITHOUT ever needing to use the Submarine or the Landmaster even once, there's multiple routes to it. Example 1. : Corneria, Sector Y , Change route to Katina, Change Route to Sector X, Secret warp to Sector Z , Area 6, Venom2 Example 2 . : Corneria, Meteo, Secret Warp to Katina, Change Route to Sector X, Secret warp to Sector Z, Area 6, Venom2 Or heck, you can even just go easy stages up to Sector X, secret warp to Z and go Venom 2, BAM. This way you both avoid the annoying Solar stage, don't have to finish Macbeth's railroad track change with the Landmaster AND you also don't have to go to Aquas (Though let's face it, Zoness is an awesome stage) All Arwing stages of varying difficulty, and none of the gimmicky experiences. The sheer amount of player choice in how to route the game to Venom 2 is astonishing.
Nintendo and Platinum were practically in the same room during development, they're both at blame since they're both the kings of non-customizable controls.

Well for most of the time when it was being made it didn't have anything to do with Starfox, It was called Dinosaur Planet for the N64, Nintendo offered to help port it to the gamecube if they slapped the starfox IP on it. Originally there was two playble characters Sabre and Krystal which you switched between during the story. Also the game is built off of Ocarina of TIme's Engine.
It's not even a good game. Even if you would take Star Fox out of it, it's still a mediocre adventure game with hardly anything memorable, just like most of the Rareware's games. With the exception of Conker's Bad Fur Day and Jet Force Gemini.

EH, Zelda at least has tried to tell variations, even if it's very samey in the end. I don't know how Fire Emblem manages to be so repetitious though. It has different characters, nations and villains, but so many tropes get repeated there seems to be a copy paste factor there.

I remember those Rumble Pack Commercials! Such Nostalgia.... If I can have a moment to brag, you get expert mode for getting all the medals and playing the game in expert mode gets Fox some sweet shades like a certain someone; also you get an alternate title screen for getting all the medals in expert mode. This game was my jam. Played the shit out of it every chance I got when I was growing up. Still plug in the Nintendo 64 from time to time just to play this game.

I am such a fanboy of Star Fox 64 I'd gladly say I find it worth $80-$100. That's how much I spent on Star Fox Zero after all. I have all the medals on Star Fox 64 on expert mode and I still have fun with it 2 decades later. And now that I have Star Fox Zero I have even more options. Star Fox 64 > Star Fox Zero > Star Fox 1 > Star Fox 2. I haven't played enough of the others to have a fair opinion though.

Lol, I had that VHS tape as a kid. Nintendo actually mailed out several tapes like that, and they were all awesome (though the Star Fox one was probably the best), and they were really effective ways to get you hyped up for upcoming games in a pre-internet era.
as far as the franchise for Star Fox goes.....I seriously doubt the writers for this doesnt know what to do with Star Fox cause they seem to only do remakes/reboots and just attach a gimmick to it. In fact i think Nintendo is really starting to run out of ideas with ALL their franchises. I dont have high hopes for the NX. Its gonna be another gimmick console. I think Zelda Breath of the Wild looks amazing, absolutely beautiful and star shinning I'm very disappointed in them treating the Paper Mario and Metroid Series, as it looks like they do not give a single fuck about them Nintendo will continue to surprise me, in good and bad ways We have to wait to see what turn we have for now, especially with this new console coming out I try to keep my expectations low, to see how they'll either blow me away or disappoint me No matter what. Because they didn't do anything with their Ips, all the new games they made were Meh at best, and then they turned into a exclusive kinect developer. The only good thing that came from Microsoft buying rare was killer instinct, and they didn't even make that. EpicOdysseus Yes, OoT's formula is still used today but just because that fact is true doesn't mean OoT does it the best. Just about every other 3D Zelda game that has come out in the years since OoT uses the formula to greater effect and in general just plays better. Hence why I say OoT has aged. When they remade it for the 3DS, they actually did have to do a lot of tweeking to make it easier to play. They had to tighten up the controls (though I found it a little harder to play with the Joy Pad) and they had to change some of the graphics around, particularly in the Water Temple so it was less frustrating to play on top of adding some new things to the interface for the sake of convince. Then look at the 3DS remake of Starfox 64. Very little was changed apart from the graphics and the reason for that is that nothing needed to be changed. And I know some people will say that Star Fox 64 is a much simpler game but that's part of the reason why it has aged so well. It kept things simple, kept in mind what the hardware could do well and focused on making the game fun above all else. OoT was just a little too abishous for it's time and has thus suffered from age.

Truth be told, they did it because they didn't want another Bad Fur Day to happen. Not saying that it was a bad game, just how Nintendo treated Rare....changed after BFD. I can't be the only one that thinks that either, since Nintendo clearly could of kept Rare if they wanted to.
I'm going to predict that the genre switch will bother him, but overall he'll think it's alright. Not terrible, not good, just okay.
Johnny it's one of the few people that have never fully experienced this game, not counting that time that he saw it in action on the BSC commentary. On the other hand, there is people that had played it to death, and, much like me, have learned every single dialog on this game, It is amazing to watch a review of someone fresh and new to this version. Thanks Johnny! And yeah, good luck with Adventures, I like the game but certainly it's not for everyone.

7:49 it's worth mentioning that, for those who don't know, the reason everyone's animated that way, is that as a nod to Miyamoto's love for marionette drama's, such as Gerry Anderson's Thunderbirds, Capt Scarlet, Fireball XL5, etc, the animators had the character's mouths pop open and closed like a puppet.

This game is the reason I love Star Fox. I have put in so much hours into this game. I didn't get all the planet medals but I went through all the trails. I never played the other games but as a fan I will get to the others at some point.

When I did my Let's Play of this game, I took the time to look up a couple of wiki sources for background information on planets and characters. Turns out there is a lot more explained on them, like how Katt and Falco were part of a gang and Katt even had a crush on Falco.
Starfox Adventures is pretty decent as an adventure game, just that everyone hates it cause it's not Starfox.

Yeah while the Starfox Adventures and Nuts & Bolts reviews had funny moments they're my least favorite reviews of his cause he hated them for being so different. And yes I actually liked Nuts & Bolts. Is it as good as the first two Banjo-Kazooie games? Hell no. But at least the humor and charm is still there.

The reason I said the marathon would be short is because most of the Star Fox games are really short. I honestly forgot about Adventures and Command is going to take forever in order to get all the endings.

To be fair a lot of 90 commercials were cringeworthy.
Genesis does, Jaguar do the math, those awful 3DO and CD-i ads, the Saturn slagging off the PS1, bunch of terrible ads back then.
That was back when Nintendo were trying to be edgy with their advertisements to combat against SEGA. The 90s were probably the most cringe inducing times for advertising in general.

This game I have spent so much time on playing it alone and having a blast in the process. So many childhood memories playing this beloved classic and eventually buying it on the Virtual Console and 100% the game entirely, including the infamous Expert Mode. Which by the way John, if you thought Level 3 in the original Star Fox was bad, Expert Mode can and will put you to the test. Trust me. I've done it before and it is insane.
And now, time for some Star Fox Fun Facts and Lore!
1. The reason why Fox knows Bill in the first place is that Fox and Bill used to be in a Military Academy long before the events of SF64. It wasn't until after Fox received word from Peppy that he and his father, James McCloud, had been betrayed by Pigma and James was captured (then most likely proceeded to be tortured to death) by Andross. It was at that point that Fox would go on to create a new Star Fox team to not only honor his father's legacy, but to take Andross down.
2. As for why Falco and Katt know each other us because Falco used to be part of a gang with Katt. This is explored a little further in the Star Fox manga. Yes, there is in fact an official Star Fox manga. It bridges the gap between the events of SF64 and Adventures, which also explains a certain event at the end of Adventures. I recommend giving it a read, it's some good stuff.
Though Falco being part of a gang before joining the Star Fox team does explain why he can be a jerk sometimes.
3. There is a surprising amount of background detail in certain areas of the game. For example, the planet Zoness used to be a galactic tropical resort and the birth world of Falco. Of course, Andross' forces invaded Zoness and made it a toxic waste dump. You can imagine how hurt the bird was about his once great home being turned to crap.
4. In the European version of Star Fox 64, Lylat Wars, there was an extra voice option added called Lyatian. This voice option helped mimic the SNES voices if anyone was curious enough to hear it.
5. Gaining all of the Score Attack medals in the normal game, aside from unlocking the infamous Expert Mode, also netted players the ability to use the Landmaster in multiplayer and to those who were brave enough to net all of the medals in Expert Mode (like me) you will gain the ability to on foot in multiplayer as well.
Metroid Zero is a reboot after only 2 game releases, I mean there was fusion and super metroid and the return of samus, but since zero came out around zero, its almost the same.

PLEASE JOHNNY, PLEASE don't hate Star Fox Adventures. It's like, the cornerstone of mah childhood. I know now it's not really a "Star Fox" game, but it's still a damn good game.
Johnny has limited experience with these games and is probably one of the most fair reviewers there are.
If they kept the game as "Dinosaur Planet" as originally planned, most positive it wouldn't get as much hate as it currenrly deserves.
I get why it is hated but the fact that nothing about it is really bad in anyway really makes me feel that people are just far too nitpicky and have too much fun ruining a game that even if it had not started out as the game it became was still an excellent game. It was a lot of fun. It actually gave fucking birth to a series instead of just reboots.

Also, Cat playes a similar role in both games, but they are different because the original Cat was raised by her father, and the Catalyst Cat was raised by Kruger because Cat's father was killed alongside the mother.

Well here's something a lot of people seem to forget. You can get to the good ending of the game WITHOUT ever needing to use the Submarine or the Landmaster even once, there's multiple routes to it.
Example 1. : Corneria, Sector Y , Change route to Katina, Change Route to Sector X, Secret warp to Sector Z , Area 6, Venom2
Example 2 . : Corneria, Meteo, Secret Warp to Katina, Change Route to Sector X, Secret warp to Sector Z, Area 6, Venom2
Or heck, you can even just go easy stages up to Sector X, secret warp to Z and go Venom 2, BAM.
This way you both avoid the annoying Solar stage, don't have to finish Macbeth's railroad track change with the Landmaster AND you also don't have to go to Aquas (Though let's face it, Zoness is an awesome stage) All Arwing stages of varying difficulty, and none of the gimmicky experiences. The sheer amount of player choice in how to route the game to Venom 2 is astonishing.
You see this Nintendo? WE JUST WANT MORE OF THIS! WE DON'T WANT YOUR AWFUL CONTROLS AND SUDDEN GAMEPLAY SHIFTS!

Well for most of the time when it was being made it didn't have anything to do with Starfox, It was called Dinosaur Planet for the N64, Nintendo offered to help port it to the gamecube if they slapped the starfox IP on it. Originally there was two playble characters Sabre and Krystal which you switched between during the story. Also the game is built off of Ocarina of TIme's Engine.
It's not even a good game. Even if you would take Star Fox out of it, it's still a mediocre adventure game with hardly anything memorable, just like most of the Rareware's games. With the exception of Conker's Bad Fur Day and Jet Force Gemini.

If I can have a moment to brag, you get expert mode for getting all the medals and playing the game in expert mode gets Fox some sweet shades like a certain someone; also you get an alternate title screen for getting all the medals in expert mode.
This game was my jam. Played the shit out of it every chance I got when I was growing up. Still plug in the Nintendo 64 from time to time just to play this game.
Wonder how he will fair with the stylus controls. I hated those in Command the game was unplayable for me.

I am such a fanboy of Star Fox 64 I'd gladly say I find it worth $80-$100. That's how much I spent on Star Fox Zero after all. I have all the medals on Star Fox 64 on expert mode and I still have fun with it 2 decades later. And now that I have Star Fox Zero I have even more options.
Star Fox 64 > Star Fox Zero > Star Fox 1 > Star Fox 2. I haven't played enough of the others to have a fair opinion though.

Lol, I had that VHS tape as a kid. Nintendo actually mailed out several tapes like that, and they were all awesome (though the Star Fox one was probably the best), and they were really effective ways to get you hyped up for upcoming games in a pre-internet era.

as far as the franchise for Star Fox goes.....I seriously doubt the writers for this doesnt know what to do with Star Fox cause they seem to only do remakes/reboots and just attach a gimmick to it. In fact i think Nintendo is really starting to run out of ideas with ALL their franchises. I dont have high hopes for the NX. Its gonna be another gimmick console.

Why do people shit on XBox One(err...original XBox) era Rare? The Conker remake's censorship was out of their control and GBTG is just a modernized beat em up and isn't particularly bad. Hell they didn't really go off the deep end until after the Kinect launched.
Because they didn't do anything with their Ips, all the new games they made were Meh at best, and then they turned into a exclusive kinect developer. The only good thing that came from Microsoft buying rare was killer instinct, and they didn't even make that. Plus because Microsoft was bought by rare, we lost many games that could have been, like Banjo threeie, and Donkey Kong Racing.

I like Star Fox Zero but its disappointing that its just a remake of 64 and those controls,not terrible but its really hard to get use to.
Starfox 64 was indeed the highest peak for the Starfox Series,. Starfox Zero tries to do that, but it has a LOT of things that hold it back.
