      ThatOneShyguy The All-Range mode segments wouldn't work as well then. There's many situations where you have to move directly away from a telegraphed attack, and it wouldn't work with the classic All-Range Mode camera because it forces you to turn to their direction to see them, meaning you would already get clobbered because you didn't see their telegraph.

    This game's background gives me a lot of vibes for when they released Kid Icarus Uprising on the 3DS.
    I mean, think about it.
    - Series reboot
    - Anime shorts (in Fox's case, just 1)
    - Divided opinions on control scheme
    - Made by Platinum (in KI's case, somewhat)
    - Poor sales
    Kinda sad that the very thing fans bemoan them for (too much Mario, Zelda, Pokémon) is actually what helps keep them afloat since not many folks seem interested in anything else Nintendo does...

    Most Reviews I find always have trouble explaining themselves with over blown complaints that might as well be nit-picks, some making such Over the top & over-exaggerated Claims like "Miyamoto would be ashamed of this" when it's very clearly not the case, this was a very well made review with valid points & great explanations & overall it was the most fun to watch.

    What's this? A Review of this game that doesn't simply bash it because it has Gyro controls? One that doesn't bash it because it's a reboot of 64 (I didn't think they needed to reboot the series again, personally)? One that actually states that you don't *have* to check the bottom screen all of the fucking time just to shoot things in most stages? Truly, we are in Purgatory!
    But all jokes aside, this was a good review to watch-it tackled the good, the bad, and other aspects of the game (I'll give a hint as to say don't bother with Target View unless you need to get a quick peek at whatever you main objective is) without coming off as critical for the sake of being critical.

    I think at this point, people were actually kind of sick of the first game and 64's plotline being retold. Especially seeing how fans stick up for Adventures and Assault nowadays, viewing them in more positive lights.
    There are probably multiple factors on this game's failure of a performance, which may lead to Star Fox vanishing again. Oh well, there's some fan-created stuff out there at least, that Nintendo may or may not try to file against.

      i still love this game and it sure as hell isn't the worst star fox game(that still goes to command and imo adventures outside look.) but it definitely has it's flaws like slowdown(that was bad to me with the vehicles/dodria boss fight.),control(that we're a more cramp inducing kid icarus to me if you were off even a little.),level design(didn't mind the similar story as the series outside adventures has reused story/planets before and mario,pokemon,especially zelda,animal crossing and occasionally kirby are worse with rehashing stuff.) and the short length even for a star fox game(could've used a few more levels.) that the series future should fix not being on a console that was unfortunately doomed from the start.
      it is my favorite style for the star fox world along with assault/64(platinum games did such a great job and love how bayonetta is the one who brought fox mcloud to attention again.:3),my favorite nintendo promotional material alongside kid icarus uprising(love the commercials & the battle begins so much.:3) and would love to see a sequel mix elements of star fox 2(like have star wolf use andross's portal technology to cause trouble while fox searches for his father since he's alive in this version and bring in 2's pilots.) and assault.(just with better ground control as they do have interest in bringing krystal back,just don't have her replace peppy and do more with her outside love interest to fox/more of her psychic abilities.)

    • @byronlyons3548

      Even though the default ending for Command is Krystal doing a 180, and just goes back to pretty much slutting it up with Panther, leaving Fox broken in tears? Like, pretty sure I saw your comment on the other Star Fox video of Johnny's, defending Krystal from being hated, which guessing that default ending did not help her whatsoever back then. So honestly for the sake of keeping her from being called bad, it be best to skip/write off Command being the continuation of Assault. But yes, the whole making of a new Star Fox game could have been better than this, either more to this game with also the option to do away with motion controls entirely, or a proper continuation of the previous games.

    Johnny's star fox reviews are widespread universally acclaimed, he definitely saved the best for last^^
    On a personal note, star fox 64 is always on my top 10 games of all time, since I first played it in 97. I remember the commercial where the guy is testing the rumble pack in the chair that made it seem like a real crash sensation. I even remember outscoring the developers both on the N64 and virtual console and blowing my friends out of the sky in multiplayer.
    Star fox will always be one of my top games and these reviews have reminded me of those good childhood memories. Thanks Johnny for bringing these gems into light

    Star Fox (1993): "This game is amaaazing."
    Star Fox 64 (1997): "Hey guys! Do you remember Star Fox?!"
    *Most successful release at this point*
    *Three failed attempts at branching out from a sales perspective... then they came back in 2011*
    Star Fox 64 3D (2011): "You guys still love classic Star Fox... right?!"
    Star Fox Zero (2016): "The last game was a tepid success, it only sold half of what Adventures made, but you guys are fine with buying Star Fox classic again... right?!"
    *Game goes on to sell less copies than Star Fox Command...*
    I just think they don't really know what to do with the franchise. Even if the Zero was held off till the NX I doubt it would have garnered new audiences because the remake on the 3DS didn't even sell a million copies compared to the heights of Star Fox 64.

      The problem is Star Fox has gameplay that can’t really be innovated or changed without seeming gimmicky, all you can do is just make better levels. I’m pretty sure Nintendo knows this which is why they’ve experimented so much with it with varying degrees of success. Whether or not they will try to experiment more with the next Star Fox or decide to just stick with the same old remains to be seen.

    • @SamnissArandeen
      @SamnissArandeen 7 лет назад +6

      I would rather Nintendo just drop Star Fox 64 entirely and build a completely new game from whole cloth. When possible, they should use the story and characters from Star Fox in completely different ways. Hell, it's time for a completely new development staff to tackle it, people who won't feel an obligation to stick to the classics. Hey, it's certainly better than releasing the exact same game over again.

      Logan smith Honestly at this point I think most fans of the Star Fox series could care less about if a new game was like 64. We all want something new, something bold, something risky, that not only expands upon the characters but the world and brings Star Fox back into the mainstream. Think of Metroid Prime, Tomb Raider, or Breath of The Wild; a complete change in genre to previous titles but have become massively successful, THAT is what Star Fox needs.

      It's strange that they don't since they did in the 3DS N64 Zelda remakes. And in those games, most PREFER the gyro. So why they couldn't do that here and tweak the gyro intended parts of the gameplay, I have no idea.

    • @UltimaKeyMaster
      @UltimaKeyMaster 8 лет назад +3

      Because gyro controls in 64 3D was not necessary when the original controls were there just fine. Zelda is just "plant your feet and aim for two seconds" which you can't possibly fuck up with additional gyro controls.
      *All range mode* is why they didn't turn off the gyro. They intended you to be aiming COMPLETELY INDEPENDENTLY of your ship's movement and that was their answer. It does end up fixing 64 3D's gyro controls but to some it adds new problems.

    Great review! I'm glad you didn't judge this game entirely on its motion controls like so many others have.
    You complained about double-tapping the right stick to do rolls, but that's not the only way to do it! It's easier to tilt the stick in one direction, and then quickly tilt it in the opposite direction. You can do a continual roll just by timing your tilts to the right rhythm.
    It's like in the original Star Fox, where you cold roll by clicking one shoulder button, and then the other; and then keeping a continual roll by correctly timing each subsequent shoulder button press.

  • @chimerschang

    Personally, I found the all-range sections in Zero more engaging than in 64 precisely because of the motion controls.
    Instead of constantly looping around and trying to get a shot in before the enemy leaves my line of sight and I have to do it all over again, I can just glance down, aim with the gamepad and BAM.
    Found myself literally shouting "Boo-yah!" first time I pulled that off.

    This was my first Star Fox game and I absolutely loved it. As soon as I beat it I went back to unlock all the extra routes (that could of been because I was renting it and was under a time limit, but my brother bought it a few days later so my point still stands). I will admit, yes, the controls took some getting used to, but that didn't bother me. I have a hard time remembering standard controls that aren't menu-based like an RPG, so this was no different to me. The other reason why I have no gripe with the controls is because once I learned them, it felt so rewarding. I felt a sense of accomplishment when I was finally able to use everything to its full potential without really thinking about it. I know a lot of people think the controls should be the easiest part about a game, but I think there's some learning to be had there too. The immense scope of everything and knowing that you could confidently tackle it head on was more than enough for me. And, while this is unrelated to the controls, this game is an absolute spectacle to watch. My dad, who's a big Star Wars fan, stopped multiple times to watch me play, commenting on how the dog fights looked amazing and how he would have to give it a shot himself sometime. This coming from the man who plays nothing but racing simulators. I think Star Fox Zero is well worth the purchase, but you have to approach it with an open mind.

    I also recommend to anyone who reads this comment to watch Mark Brown's video on SF0. Johnny forgot to mention that the aiming reticle in SF0 is purposefully wrong on the TV, so the game will try to force you to look at the game pad.

    Thank you so much Johnny for the great review and the quick post comment that made me definitely go ahead with this purchase. I have always been curious about the Star Fox series, playing demos at Seers or game stores as a child, but I never had a Gamecube being that I was always a Playsation supporter and I had a friend for Melee and other such games. But I digress, I was on the fence about Zero due to the polarizing reviews, until I heard about the Star Fox marathon you announced. So I waited, and found out that I'm happy I hadn't wasted money to get an N64, but upset that I didn't have a 3DS back when 64 3D came out. The stories of the others were some of the same, just something I'd rather watch on youtube but then this review comes out and I'm all ears. Thank you again Johnny for the review I was looking for. So I'm happy that I can get into the universe at square 1, maybe.
    P.S. If anyone wants to get this game too it's $25 on Amazon for Prime members

    Everyone makes a big deal about the controls and avoids the main issue with the game. Yes, the controls can get messy, but even if they were better, the big problem still remains: it's literally just Star Fox 64. I know Star Fox 64 is just a reboot of the original, but the gameplay in 64 was updated and refreshing, while Zero is just a new coat of paint.

  • @aurafox1

    As much as I agree with a lot of these points, I absolutely love this game. I get that not everybody wants to devote all the time necessary to mastering the controls, but once you do, it really does feel incredible. I would say this game is on par with if not better than Star Fox 64. It has so much more content, you can select any level at any time, making ribbon hunting much less frustrating, and the completion bonuses are really nice, too.

      ***** No innovation? I consider Assault at least just as good as 64, but for different reasons and for some of the same reasons, but StarFox 2 is my favorite, I didn't like Zero as much as any of them, in my book, it was better than Command or 643D despite being fatal for the series.

    • @aurafox1
      @aurafox1 8 лет назад +3

      Z-95SkyHunter Assault is really good, I just feel like it focused a bit too much on the on-foot segments which make up the majority of the game. Though I will say that no game has ever done the Landmaster better than Assault. I'm still not a fan of Zero's Landmaster, it's way too clunky for my taste, especially in all-range mode, but I certainly wouldn't call Zero "fatal" by any stretch of the imagination. I really do think that any dedicated Star Fox fan who has been waiting for a new Star Fox 64 can really get what they're looking for in Zero as long as they're willing to put the time into getting used to the controls.
      Seriously, nothing is more satisfying than switching between walker and arwing in order to maneuver to another area and get closer to the action. I think the walker allows you to get closer to the action like Assault tried with the on-foot gameplay, but without making you feel as defenseless and vulnerable.
      Easily my favorite mission is the Satellite mission for Zoness where you get to play the mission in an arwing. It was really cool to speed through the stage that was originally played as slowly and stealthily as possible.

    This game has a tight learning curve, after a couple missions you'll get used to it. This is one instance that, much like Starfox 64, training mode will be your friend when it comes to learning the controls. You could switch screens with the - button (much like Wind Waker HD). I didn't do that since I was getting too focused on playing that switching screens might cause me to slip up.

    What I don't get about SFZ being another retread of the Andross invasion story is that it seemed like Nintendo was planning to do something different with it before they just chose to pull back from it at the last minute. It honestly would've been very interesting had they actually committed to it.
    Hear me out. During The Battle Begins, Pepper implied that there was a terrible secret that he couldn't tell Fox and only Peppy could know, and Peppy promised that he would keep him away from. When you do arrive on Venom, Pepper explained to Fox why Andross had to be exiled for his dangerous experiments, particularly his teleportation technology, but you could tell that Pepper wasn't telling the whole truth about it (his whole shtick about bringing "peace to the galaxy" sounded suspicious). And when you do fight Andross, he very much believes that Pepper was in the wrong for imprisoning him on this dwarf planet Venom, and despises how Fox and James were allying themselves with Pepper.
    It looked like Miyamoto was playing around with that cultural Japanese belief of the rivalry between dogs and monkeys (much like how we see dogs and cats as enemies), and wanted to do something more nuanced with the worn out story that was previously told years prior. Maybe Corneria really isn't as guiltfree as we were initially led to believe this time. Maybe Pepper was initially complicit with what was going on in the background as long as Corneria could benefit. Maybe Andross had a point somewhere that got lost during development. Fox himself may have become a bit doubtful towards blindingly trusting Pepper which may recontextualize his decision to turn down his offer to join the army. Unfortunately, it became clear that Nintendo wasn't willing to go down this path, instead just doing the same beats as SF64 but twisted around slightly. Just another massive bit of wasted potential for this game.

    Another outstanding review, Johnny. I think Star Fox: Zero had so much potential, and ultimately, I still very much enjoy this game! Dynamically? It's the best game in the series. Platinum Games always delivers in gameplay, dynamics, sound production, level design and musical quality. But I do feel the Gamepad holds the game back. It should have been optional, not the main focus, and that does hurt this game in a sense. I, personally, adjusted to it quite quickly. But, I know it isn't something everyone wants to experience when playing the game. I so enjoyed this game, but, I do think Star Fox 64 has the edge over Zero overall. But, damn, to me this is still a close second.

    I think that Co-op is the best way to enjoy this game. Splitting the responsibilties of flying the Arwing and shooting on the Gamepad makes all-range mode actually fucking managable with good communication and coordination. Dog Fights that I dreaded on my own were now actually really fun as my co-op buddy and I really got into these missions.

    I personally liked Starfox Zero's motion controls. It allowed me to do things I've been wanting to do in Starfox for ages like moving one way and shooting another or flying circles around bosses while obliterating them. It feels really gratifying when you finally get these controls down pat and making mince meat out of your enemies.
    However, it would have been nice to include more options. They don't have to exactly work as well as the motion controls in terms of precise-ness but it would at least keep the backlash down a bit.

    I haven't played Star Fox Zero, so I can't give my opinion from experience, but from looking at it, I feel this is why Shigeru Miyamoto *needs* to retire. I feel that Miyamoto both adds and sucks away creativity from his projects. After the first Galaxy game, the Mario series has become stale, at least aesthetically (games are still great). Star Fox Zero being another retelling of the Lylat Wars disappointed me, especially since I would have liked to have seen something after Assault, though I do understand rebooting after a decade. The GamePad controls, to me, really hurt the game. Like I said, I haven't experienced them for myself, so I can't say if they work or not, but having the basis of the controls be motion-controlled felt like a detriment. Truth is, not everyone's going to adapt to this control scheme. Sure, you'll have a good number of people who will adjust, but you'll have just as many not be able to adapt. It's a serious double-edged sword.
    Don't get me wrong, Miyamoto does deserve the respect he has for making a lot of the great Nintendo franchises were have today, but I think he's got to the point of stagnation. I think Star Fox Zero's incredibly divisive reception leaves the series in a possible state of limbo. I'd love to see another Star Fox game, but we'll just have to wait and see with the NX. Can we *fucking* see that shit, Nintendo? >_>

      Honestly after seeing Miyamoto's recent works & huge involvements in recent Nintendo games lately that are either hated or got polarizing receptions, (Skyward Sword, 3D Land, Sticker Star, StarFox Zero) I honestly have very little faith on how good the next 3D Mario game for the NX will be, since he's the one who's developing the game & the fact that he said it will be "a new *quirky* way to play Mario" immediately sends off a red flag to alot of fans, indicating he'll most likely put in shoe horn gimmicky motion controls that will no doubt cause the game to either be hated or very divisive. That & he'll most likely give the game the sticker star treatment by not having no new or unique enemies, bosses, locations & npcs, but only have enemies, bosses & locations from the NSMB series & only have generic toads as npcs.

      Jonnathan Sosa Yeah, that makes me worried. I get that he wants to give people new experiences, and I can appreciate wanting to do new things, but there's a point where you have to look at what you have and ask yourself "Is this really the best idea?" Not being able to do that shows lack of constraint, and I don't want to see such a legendary man in the gaming industry fall to this.

    The reason why they gave the feature of the special "inserts on the somersault is because when you tilt the sticks in the opposite direction, the somersault is quicker. when you tap it it take too long to come back around. Try to time it, figure it out yourself. But thats what ive noticed the difference

    I haven't gotten around to Starfox Zero yet. I had no idea it was developed by Platinum. I'm also a huge fan of them. It's really cool to see that Nintendo still plans on working with them outside of Bayonetta 2.
    Watching this makes me feel excited to play it just because of the sheer variety in optional content and unlockables it seems to have like Bayonetta 2 did.
    Also, I think this was one of your best reviews yet. Keep it up! :D

    Is it really too much to ask for Nintendo to stop using these motion control gimmicks?
    This is the main reason I stopped buying Nintendo consoles... because I just want the simplicity of turning on the game and playing it. I don't want to spend two hours wrapping my head around an awkward control scheme.
    PS4 and Xbox... sure their first party titles aren't as unique or abundant. But at least they keep shit like this as a minimum. They give you a controller and that's pretty much it.

    • @BunnyWitchcraft
      @BunnyWitchcraft 8 лет назад +19

      Luckily the handhelds stopped fucking around with gimmicks, most of the touch screen is kept basic and easy to understand, and games that use it use it a lot better then they originally did.
      I originally had a Wii U but... after seeing that they couldn't stop forcing their shitty gimmicks into every first party title, and nobody making third party titles because the system is completely held back in comparison, I left ship too.

    That ending...ow. Getting hit _IN THE HEAD_ by that amount of solid plastic hurts. I can't blame Johnny for being stunned for a moment.
    Next time, throw it at the chest or something; it's not as painful, and the vital organs tend to be located under multiple layers of skin, muscle, bone and, well, fat, unlike the brain, which only has skin, a solid skull, and not much room in which to 'safely' wobble.

    • @gingerqueer22
      @gingerqueer22 8 лет назад +29

      He's not stunned, he's trying not to laugh. And as someone who has taken a 360 case to the head before, they really aren't that painful. There's a bit of a sting, but nothing comes of it.

    I was sceptical at first but I ended up really liking Star Fox Zero! The controls are kinda complicated but that why I love them! They aren't unresponsive and function quite well. I still wonder though how you could remake Zero with standard controls without altering the game as much. My favorite Star Fox Game is still Assault though (really, the Arwing design is just awesome).
