I have such nostalgia for the first boss where he says, “You’ll never defeat Androoooooss!” My brother and I used to yell back at the TV, “I probably won’t even make it to Androooooss!” Eventually the game became second nature.
Oh my god that unlocked a memory. When me and my brother used to play we'd always end up in the lower line of levels, eventually ending up in the blue one where you defeat the crazy robot at the end. Although the thing is, we didn't know English. So instead of hearing "Destroy, destroy!" we'd make the joke "E-knor! E-knor!" which was basically a robotic-sounding pig sound. Still to this day we both remember and laugh at how obviously wrong we were as dutch kids.
I'm not a native english speaker; but this game is so quotable that even without understanding a single thing i would quote it all the time! The fact that the game had both voice acting and (big and clear) subtitles helped a lot and, most likely, were the first "teachers" of english i had! :D

Slippy is a engineer and mechanic who decides to go on all Fox's missions without hesitation, on top of keeping the team's vehicles on perfect shape for the job. He never backs out of dogfights, even if he sometimes gets out skilled by the enemy. He competently pilots an ultra agile, bleeding edge spaceship that no one but Star Fox pilots in the whole Lylat System. And then he goes back to the Great Fox and creates new tech for the team, later he returns back to flying and bring specialized analysis of the enemie's shield gauge and some weak points. Slippy is definitely a badass mercenary. He's as much of a badass as his teammates.
Slippy is technically the only team member who actually does anything sure showing you boss health bars is very helpful but at least he’s trying! As someone who’s played 64 3d and the n64 original plus zero (which was actually pretty good even if the gamepad was kinda annoying) and i wanna say LEAVE THE POOR FROG ALONE!

It's pretty crazy hearing how crisp the audio files are alone.
I have played through Star Fox 64 more times than I can count. This game is incredible, and the skill ceiling is still miles away from me. A few years back I helped form a community dedicated to score running the game, and while I have fallen off the radar a bit within the community it's still going strong. It's kind of surprising how much tech there is for maximizing your score, pretty much all stemming from hitting enemies with the explosion of a charge shot but not with the shot itself to double your points for that target.

Thank you Jirard! This game released when I was 13 - on my 13th birthday, actually. My family moved across the country that week and the first item in our new home's mailbox was the Star Fox 64 Player's Guide. About 3 days later, I was diagnosed with a pretty terrible illness that had me mostly stuck on the couch/in-bed for around 3 months. During that time, I learned this game just about to the extent you describe, and my N64 cart to this day is still littered with multiplayer options, sunglasses, and a wicked title screen to boot. Just over the weekend, on a whim, I booted it up on the Wii U and my daughter (7) and wife were laughing at how I would state every line of dialogue right before it was spoken, with the same inflection and all. This game has a special place in my heart. It was the first game I’ve ever played and it is still one of my favorite games of all time. An absolute masterpiece that can replayed forever.
Novel rumble feature, full voice acting, branching paths, secrets, hard mode, achievements, call backs to previous levels, multiplayer, enemy and boss design, perfect level design, iconic dialogue, and the nice touches that put it over the top, the sounds when you damage an enemy ship, the way ships catch fire and crash when you shoot them, allies showing up in later levels, the perfect music. It's arguably the best shmup ever.

It's so nice to hear you gush about this game! Absolutely loved Lylat Wars and it's still one of my go to games for the Nintendo 64. You absolutely nailed its appeal in this video!
One of my favorite games of all time. The N64 version is ELITE. I was so upset when I got the 3DS version and I heard the voices had been changed. The visuals really fit the feel but the voices man, they're so unique and important to the overall aesthetic and feel of Star Fox 64. They should have at least left an option for 64 audio, if they have those files. But regardless, amazing game. Super hyped you did this video.
Star fox 64 was the first game I've ever mastered as a kid I remember being 6 or 7 years old playing it over and over again to unlock all the medals and finally mastering it I hope the switch gives us n64 games someday
I played the 3DS version to death and back. I think it was one of the first "games with multiple-endings" that I ever played. I'm super glad to see your take on the original again!
@@TheZero1312 I think Assault and Command are better games than people give them credit for but yeah, 64 is still the best sadly. If they made bayonetta 2's star fox easter egg into a full game instead of whatever Zero was it could have been something really special.
@@milliondollarmistake I like Assault quite a lot, but Command is kind of just there. I have no idea what its "plot" was trying to be, and the branching paths often felt really confusing, like what makes certain missions unlock is really obtuse. In 64, the missions are more obvious, but still up to your skill to actually accomplish. In Command I feel like I would play the stage twice with virtually identical performance, and somehow I unlocked the secret mission.
Another great vid, Jirard! I have fond memories of my cousins showing me this game when I was younger and loving it a lot. Oh, and I ordered the complete Frog in a Car package, because I felt like it. Worth every penny. Keep being awesome, dude!
I picked up Star Fox 64 back in a pawn shop in West Virginia when I was a kid around 1999 or 2000... and it was like $20. My parents got it for me and I played it SO MUCH I completed it naturally.. it will forever be one of my favorite games EVER.
As someone who grew up watching my brother master every game he tried, it blew my mind when I only ever found out about being able to play multiplayer on foot from a gaming magazine
I love this game, even though it was called Lylat Wars in the UK which isn't a great title. I also love the original snes game, and even Star Fox Adventures: Dinosaur Planet. I like Star Fox Assault too. Its nothing special but its a lot of fun.
STAR FOX 64 is my favorite N64 game ever. Voice acting, levels, bosses, soundtrack. Love this video. Check out my Star Fox poster I made on my art channel if you like :) I actually used the title Lylat Wars since I was inspired by the original Star Wars poster
I cannot fathom that Star Fox was a strong Nintendo franchise, with a single game in its library for like 23 years of 1:1 remakes. (I’m very happy Star Fox 2 was made available on SNES online)
This was my first game ever on my first ever console. So this video hit home in the nostalgia department. The urge to replay it is so big right now! I'm brazilian, so my english was null when I was 7 years old. Now that I can understand the caracthers, probably it's gonna be a new experience to replay it.
This may seem like an odd thing, but... Jirard reviewing Star Fox 64 is kind of special to me, since that was the most recent review he had when I first found his videos! I remember watching it on my PS3 in 2012... the nostalgia is real
When I think of immersion in video games, I still think first of StarFox 64. Even after dozens of times, the dialogue and the first person view puts me right in that arwing.
I had a massage chair attachment that would plug into the Rumble Pak slot. Had a friend play up to the "Forever Train" sequence while sitting in said chair. Walked him through getting to the giant explosion with the train crashing into the building... Turned on the chair just as the boss said "I CAN'T STOP IIIIT!!!"... Dude freaked the HECK OUT as the explosions rocked his whole BODY! Ah... Memories. Unfortunately the old massage chair accessory didn't survive my relocations over the years and had to be tossed away.
I’m literally putting together this awesome resin model of the Arwing now. Got it off Etsy and it’s the best representation of this classic ship I’ve ever seen! It’s even gotten me into airbrushing, something I thought I’d never do. Star Fox 64 is and will forever be one of my favorite and most influential games of all time
This was my first Completed game as a child. And the fact you could find secrets without a guide was just a testimant to how the game was built to keep you invested and experimental
Amen brother; this is a game that will forever be in my heart as one of the best games I've ever played for me. Still have the N64 with this and I still play it from time to time even today. Oh and I remember hearing of Rick May; it hurt, trust me.
I share all the same sentiments for StarFox 64... It's truly a game that will never become dull to me. It defined the N64 to me and it's my absolute favorite game for the platform. Truly a classic that I play even to this day
18 year old me was so excited for this game. I got it home and I sucked hard! After maybe 30 tries I gave up about halfway through the game. Sold it. Two years later I got the itch to play it. So I bought it again. I stuck with it and actually got good. One of the few pre achievement era games I fully completed.
i love that the game has infulence from thunderbirds, while i was born in 89, i grew up with the show running on tv all the time. good classic brittish tv, i admit it kinda shows its age but its a fun series
SO glad there are others who cherish this game as much as I do. Even though I was terribly afraid of Andros' true form back in the days and would constantly reset my console once I reached that part. Starfox 64 (or Lylat Wars, as it is called here) will never not be among my top 5 games ever.
@@GreyWandererXD same loved adventures the first and second time through still have a soft spot for it, but assualt is the better starfox game. still adventures introduced krystal... who i hope they bring back in the future... a little less, fridged.
Way back me and two friends spent most of our summer playing _Lylat Wars_ over and over again, struggling for that on-foot multiplayer mode. By the end of it both of us could quote the game backwards and forwards despite speaking not even speaking English at the time. Good times.
You're absolutely damn right that this game is comfort food, whenever I bust out my N64, this game is always the first game I'll go a few runs through.
I legitimately had no Idea how to get badges. Also didn't know that you could unlock expert mode and run around as just the characters in multiplayer. Guess that's where Starfox Assault inherited that Idea. And that new title screen! So freakin cool.
I left this comment on another video earlier today, but it fits here too. I finished Star Fox for the first time last week, and until then I didn't know that 64 was a remake, I was thoroughly surprised.
I'm a Zelda fan, but I have a few days before I start work, I'll give this a try. I played it back in the 90's/early 2000's, but never gave it a fun play. Thank you, TC.
Because of its short design with multiple paths, I ended up replaying this game more often than any game I've ever owned! I think it was perfectly crafted for replay value and it's a huge selling point! I can't think of any other game series that utilizes such a clever map design of levels that branch off into 3 different paths that end up to the same end goal but give entirely different journeys! I love Star Fox 64
What a coincidence. I just bought Star Fox 64 3D from some extra cash I had from tips. I saw it at Wal Mart, knew I still hadn't played the N64 original, and though, "This is probably the best version, so..." And the game is really really solid. I love how many different ways there are to beat the game, and to complement it, I love how short the game is. It makes each playthrough feel frantic and tightly designed.
Just a reminder that the voice of Peppy and Andross passed away this year. RIP Rick May. You made legends with this game and TF2's soldier.

I remember being 6 or 7 years old playing it over and over again to unlock all the medals and finally mastering it
I hope the switch gives us n64 games someday
I played the 3DS version to death and back. I think it was one of the first "games with multiple-endings" that I ever played. I'm super glad to see your take on the original again!
The best Star Fox game even after 23 years. Still waiting for Nintendo to make a proper sequel that surpasses this game.
I REALLY wish they would do that already XD
Assault and Command were proper sequel, but they didn't supass it. SF64 on the 3DS was a honorable attempt.
@@TheZero1312 I like the 3DS version better than the N64
Such a great game. Thanks for all the amazing content and positivity, definitely a channel I reach for when times are tough
Wow!! A complete it! Been a while!! Love the vids! Keep me coming!! Thanks for all you do
I cannot fathom that Star Fox was a strong Nintendo franchise, with a single game in its library for like 23 years of 1:1 remakes. (I’m very happy Star Fox 2 was made available on SNES online)
Looks like SF64 is its own series' jam too.
And depending how much was leaked, someone might be able to model swap and port it to pc o.o
Oops, forgot about Star Fox, Assault, Adventures and Command because ummmm, well, they aren’t “Star Fox” to me. That’s just me though.
@@utahnash Adventures frustrates me because it has the makings of a great game, but being rushed and having so many development issues ruined it
This was my first game ever on my first ever console.
Jesus you have brought back and old memory you have dust off that part of my childhood I never even knew I had forgot.
When I think of immersion in video games, I still think first of StarFox 64. Even after dozens of times, the dialogue and the first person view puts me right in that arwing.
This game is so awesome so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes. I remember spending a summer just to get the good ending.
I feel like Jirard needs to try out the Sin and Punishment games.
I enjoyed the barrel rolls
I’m literally putting together this awesome resin model of the Arwing now. Got it off Etsy and it’s the best representation of this classic ship I’ve ever seen! It’s even gotten me into airbrushing, something I thought I’d never do. Star Fox 64 is and will forever be one of my favorite and most influential games of all time
This was my first Completed game as a child. And the fact you could find secrets without a guide was just a testimant to how the game was built to keep you invested and experimental
Man I still play through this game every few weeks. This is my favourite game of all time and I'm still proud of my 1830 personal best
My favorite game of all time. Now I see where you appreeciation for the much maligned SF Zero comes from. Thank you.
Amen brother; this is a game that will forever be in my heart as one of the best games I've ever played for me. Still have the N64 with this and I still play it from time to time even today. Oh and I remember hearing of Rick May; it hurt, trust me.
Hey, I’m on your side!
Once a year I play thru the game blasting LCD sound systems This is Happening. Highly recommended
This game has PHENOMENAL music. Oh my goodness, hearing the end credits blasted me with nostalgia
After Christmas in 2010, I brought my first N64 console that still works and later got to enjoy Starfox 64 for the first time.
I share all the same sentiments for StarFox 64... It's truly a game that will never become dull to me. It defined the N64 to me and it's my absolute favorite game for the platform. Truly a classic that I play even to this day
I vividly remember beating Star Fox 64 through the hard route growing up, and I felt so felt proud when I did it.
This video is basically just him going "In my first video I said this, AND I STILL FEEL THIS WAY", it really shows how much he loves this game
am i the only one who thought slippy was female cuase of his voice?....
*NO*
If I was being truthful, I actually thought Slippy was a girl when I was 5. Star Fox Adventures on GameCube changed that thought process.
He just had a frog in his throat...
...and now I realize just how dirty that sounds, all things considered.
Not really, since they called Slippy "he" all the time.
@@GreyWandererXD same loved adventures the first and second time through still have a soft spot for it, but assualt is the better starfox game. still adventures introduced krystal... who i hope they bring back in the future... a little less, fridged.
You know what I'd love to see? Jirard trying to complete Ultimate Spiderman. Anyone who has even attempted this know why I want this
Way back me and two friends spent most of our summer playing _Lylat Wars_ over and over again, struggling for that on-foot multiplayer mode. By the end of it both of us could quote the game backwards and forwards despite speaking not even speaking English at the time. Good times.
God I love the music in just about every starfox game. Super underrated aspect of the series I think.
I’ve been waiting for this episode ever since the old Star Fox 64 video was taken down. 🥳
You're absolutely damn right that this game is comfort food, whenever I bust out my N64, this game is always the first game I'll go a few runs through.
i always used to play this at my grandparents house. i loved it so much!
Ratchet and clank fans: this is not the space furry we’re looking for
Jirard. Something tells me that the 1 episode webshow "A Fox in Space" would be completely up your alley.
I legitimately had no Idea how to get badges. Also didn't know that you could unlock expert mode and run around as just the characters in multiplayer. Guess that's where Starfox Assault inherited that Idea. And that new title screen! So freakin cool.
I beat the same on the hardest path and felt soooo accomplished. But I had no idea about the extra unlocks until now!
I left this comment on another video earlier today, but it fits here too. I finished Star Fox for the first time last week, and until then I didn't know that 64 was a remake, I was thoroughly surprised.
SO PUMPED, I still have this CIB, from childhood too :). I share you love.
I'm a Zelda fan, but I have a few days before I start work, I'll give this a try. I played it back in the 90's/early 2000's, but never gave it a fun play. Thank you, TC.
Not gonna lie, when you said, "Thanks pandemic." I immediately went, "Wait, Pandemic studios wasn't even around yet, what do you mean?"
Great episode I remember Star Fox 64 was the game that made me want to get a N64 back in the day 👍
What a coincidence.
