Usually if a shonen anime episode has two titles instead of just one, that's because it's adapting two chapters of the manga in a single episode instead of just one. With Dragon Ball and early Dragon Ball Z however that was different because the manga chapters up until early DBZ were super super short compared to other shonen manga. Dunno if that was because it was more kid friendly that it had to be shorter or if that was just Toriyama's style or if Toriyama was so busy with a ton of side projects that he could only dedicate so much time to Dragon Ball/Z per week. But for stuff like Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, Naruto, ect. it's double chapters with each chapter being half an episode before or after the commercial break. It works out well for advertisers. It's like that in Jump magazines too. Plenty of space between manga chapters for ads.
Both Sonic X and Beastars (Season One) have informative Eyecatchers, while Beastars (Season 2) has Stylish aesthetic eyecatchers (a random character appears on a wall and then the wall breaks while the series logo appear), I hope the final season keeps the eyecatchers (even if it will not get aired on Fuji TV)
Two of my favorites that you didn't cover were Haikyuu's and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood! I love that the Haikyuu ones give a glimpse into silly little practice shots, even for the other teams and characters who don't play, like the managers. and who can forget the classic "FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST." "FULL METAL ALCHEMIST."
Gosh, the title cards and eyecatchers of some cartoons and anime are so good. It's great that we have a video like this around that gives them the appreciation they deserve!
My favorite Titlecards are the ones from Ultraman, as many uses the silhouettes of the Kaiju of the episode, and the last seasons do like an illustration based on the Kaiju silhouettes and with the Ultra Warriors, machines, tools or even some details that make reference to the past.
Eye catches likely exist to give warning that the show is about to come back on from the commercial break, so you don't miss anything. This isn't as prevalent now with streaming services and the ability to pause/rewind, but with standard television this was crucial
I can’t believe someone on yt mentioned the actual sub yugioh anime. And I agree the slant for the puzzle bothered me too 😂. Gx is pretty good, but 5ds is something special. I highly recommend you watch 5ds and then come back to gx. This video was so good keep it up bro 🤝
Code Lyoko, a French show, is always what comes to mind for me in terms of eyecatches, but that's really because I can't think of any other show I've seen with any besides Pokémon.
Those aren't even titles. They just describe what is in the story. I think people look at ads for the manga or story and assume it's the title when it's just trying to make the product sound more exciting. Titles should be short and catchy.
You stopped watching Gurren Lgn due to Nia.. I actually dropped Grn Lgn after the first 2 episodes and gone back after that char died. Gladly I made it that way.
