Interesting place to start the series and leave it for years but it stuck in my mind 😂) but even with my limited experience with the games it still feels so nostalgic. The only really self aware thing was Tails saying his character has been “wildly inconsistent”. Besides that, it’s just stuff that would make sense for the characters to remember and talk about. • @heroicgangster9981
    @heroicgangster9981 Год назад +18

Transformers is another example that gets the nostalgia struggle even when the bay films were succeeding, mainly in the shows. Like Power Rangers, it's always a struggle between if producers want to produce new inspired stories, develop unique stories from the normal franchise elements (like Super Sentai and Kamen Rider), or try to appeal to the old classic aspects of a franchise even at it's own detriment for fans. (Power Rangers.... seriously I'm tired of Go Go Power Rangers lol)
After Transformers Prime, to me it felt like a victim to cartoons at the time of wanting to actually sell the shows to kids which led to the stories starting to fall more flat like the animation budgets for action cartoons.
Even when the opposite happens of wanting to make a "mature" Transformers show like the War for Cybertron netflix series', the conflicts and adult tones with the first generation to Beast wars appeal feel forced to try and invite the narrative to the mainstream that transformers is now mature. When prior shows like Armada, Animated, and Prime were more mature when they gradually build up the stakes throughout the series.

As someone who bought pokemon brilliant diamond, its only enjoyable if you’ve never played a sinnoh game imo. Platinum has way more content, and as for the original Diamond/Pearl, its basically the same as the remake. There is little to no new content on the sinnoh remakes. Theres not even any platinum additions in the remakes. And if mfs start saying “Its a Diamond/Pearl remake! Not a platinum remake.” That still doesn’t make sense. Theres so much small quality of life changes in platinum that they could have added to the remake. A good example is on the watch that you obtain, in the original games there was 1 button which allows you to go to the next screen. In platinum there was 2 buttons, one to go forward and one to go backwards. Yet in the remakes, the watch only had 1 button. A small quality of life change that could have been easy to add wasn’t added to be faithful to the original Diamond/Pearl. And Cyrus was such a better villain in Platinum as he got more screen time. Unlike in Diamond/Pearl where he only appeared like 3 times in the WHOLE game. And in the remake, he only gets 3 APPEARANCES. If anybody wants to play the sinnoh game, play platinum.

I believe there is no future in building on nostalgia and callbacks. It can function, but it can never be truly as great as it can be. Sonic games, for example, used to use bits of Green Hill, for example, but games such as Sonic Advance turned it into entirely new levels, not using even a bit of old level design or art assets. That's not even touching upon how both Sonic 1 and 2 Game Gear have Green Hill-like zones that are completely different in level design and those games themselves are completely original and separate from their 16-bit counterparts, with completely different developers and a different game design philosophy. A game like Mania's take on Green Hill exists as a crutch: instead of taking the mere idea and some concepts, it takes entire chunks of level design. Most of Mania's badniks are also recycled from older games and it's new level design is barely even seen in things like first acts or bosses. The game has nostalgia take up so much of it that it also basically has 4 art styles going on at the same time due to how some assets are touched up from older games while some are completely new, and that's not even mentioning Sonic 3 had an art direction from say, Sonic 2 and there are zones from both in Mania.
I feel like in the past, a lot of the video games used to use old locations for story or to show how far we have come - in comparison, I'd like to bring up another throwback, Mega Man 9. I have issues with it, but most would say it's quite well done in game design. However, there's a specific section in Splash Woman's stage that's basically identical to a section in Wave Man from Mega Man 5, just with a few enemy spawns added in. This wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for Mega Man 9's love for pandering to fans of 2 and 3 - the game's visuals were severely limited so much that it ends up looking more basic than an actual NES game, arguably looking uglier in that where 5 had a fully animated background to show off as a late NES game, 9 has a blank color background.
I also feel like no matter the time, remakes are also just of less worth. I like a game such as Metroid Zero Mission, as it might as well be a complete reimagining - fully new visuals, game design philosophy, mechanics and more. However, that means I think the original Metroid is still completely worth playing due to how unique of a game it is in of itself. I feel like remakes can never replace the originals, as games are art - so while I can appareciate remakes that do their own thing, many remakes, especially nowadays, try to do just that, replace the original - and to me, they always fail, using the original as a crutch to add in whatever "more appealing" decision or art detail on top, warping the experience. I also just feel series are better off dead at some point - some series should have died not even in the 2010s, but in the 2000s.
I do agree that nostalgia bait always existed, so this comment is just me rambling about this stuff. Sorry if this is a bit of a long comment for no reason. Personally, I haven't touched much Nintendo stuff until recently and I am surprised at how much SMB Overworld and Underwater leitmotifs they pushed into things even as early as the NES. SMB2US title screen, every new title screen for SMAS, SMBDX, Thousand Year Door battle theme, I think some Double Dash music has that too, SM64's cave music uses Underground, etc.

@@lightskinnedlarry728 I don't know about the latter, but I am just mixed on the idea of ever "replacing" the original when talking about remakes. Maybe a port with bugfixes, though even that could be argued as certain glitches in games affect how a game is played and some can be helpful to skilled players, but remakes overall almost always take at least aesthetical liberties. No matter how small or if it's to modernize a game per say, I feel like no game should be brought to modern standards - rather, it's worth thinking about why it apparently doesn't meet them in the first place. Some games might have just always had questionable decisions, while some just don't fit the current trends of the industry.

Both Modern and Classic Sonic are the same age so generations can't be canon, Forces contradicts Generations saying Classic Sonic came from another universe instead of the past, 06 wiped itself from the canon, 06 and the Rush and Rivals games have two different origins story for Blaze and the list of plot holes this creates just goes on and on.

Kingdom Hearts II- Things get deeper and more complex; adolescent disillusionment, where the darkness is more overwhelming and may even come from within

    "Nostalgia where it doesn't exist"
I've been playing Slayers X a whole lot recently. It's a retraux shooter supposedly made by a guy who was super into nu metal and The Matrix as a teenager, and the main character is a Mary-Sue self-insert of the creator.
The latter point struck a huge chord with me - I used to make RPG Maker shitposts with myself as a character. I never fully released anything thank Christ, but it brought me back to a more self-indulgent and carefree place, even though the product itself reflected none of my interests at the time; I just identified with the spirit of it.

This year I played even chrono trigger and than OT 2 and realized how fun it was to see what kind of passion those people have who grew up with JPGs in the 90s and are now composers and game developers that helped make those Projects like Octopath. There is certainly more nuance to this topic, such as when new franchises pop up that pay homage to the past in a more subtle way to add a faint sense of familiarity to something that is otherwise not nostalgic, and many such franchises often go on to become nostalgic in their own right. Of course, nostalgia can also backfire, and bridges can be burnt for some people if a franchises is taken in a direction they feel is a disservice to the media they were once fond of.

3:34 The Neo Saban era was pretty mid overall regardless of the throwbacks (and yes, Ninja Steel was mid, not terrible, in spite of the fart jokes. Also people actually harassed the actors of the comic relief characters which wouldn't be okay even if they targeted the writer(s) or producer(s) who was/were actually at fault) but Super Megaforce was actually a huge insult because of how horrifically mismanaged it was. A lot of past actors even never got invited back even for the Legendary Battle. Dino Charge was just okay but they didn't stick the landing. As for the Hasbro era, Beast Morphers and Dino Fury were also just okay and there's clearly some carryover of some the things I never liked about the Neo Saban era.

This is why I hate that Community Posts don't show up on PC. I didn't find out this existed until I checked my phone. Subbing to your second channel now.
While I do agree than nostalgia is nothing new, I'm still... upset that we live in a world where the Disney Live Action Remakes exist. I actually liked their Cinderella, but the original film actually needed story fixes that time. Now they're just going shot-for-shot because they'll be smash-hits regardless of effort and bad reviews...
2:44 I feel called out re Advance Wars...
Overuse of elements from the original, huh... coughPoke- oh wait you already have a Pokemon section.
I definitely remember the insane hype for Johto remakes in Gen 4. When freaking Battle Revolution had secret gold and silver profile card backgrounds people took THAT as a sign. HG/SS ended up adding a lot of new stuff in addition to improving the old, and to this day they might be my favourite videogame remakes of all time.
How you described Sonic Mania is how I sum up Generations. Generations is just a really well-designed Sonic game that HAPPENS to have levels based on past games. It's nostalgic, sure, but I don't think that's why it's so loved. It's almost like making a genuinely good game is the best way to make a videogame.
The Kingdom Hearts section made me genuinely emotional. This might be the "deepest" take on Kingdom Hearts I've ever heard... though I don't watch many KH-centric channels.
"Retroactive nostalgia" (as-in, encouraging people to go back and play earlier entries) is something that I hope happens with Fire Emblem Engage. Right now though social media is being a doomer about it because Three Houses fans don't like anything that isn't Three Houses.
And I've got a backlog of old media I want to experience too.
Thanks for the shout-out by the way? Not sure how I helped with this but... I'll take it.

But ever since BDSP, my interest for the franchise has been dying. I also have been drawn to retro things my whole life and even look at opder shows and play old games. I have nostalgia for certain things, yes, but depending on what it is, nostalgia bait can be good or bad. For example, Square Enix absolutely loving FF7. Like omg we get it the game is important, but please knock it off already! It's too loved.

ever since Rise got put in hiatus I can't help but feel the exact way with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, especially since almost all the merch and representation TMNT has had since then within the greater franchise these days have almost always been the '87 show
i know it's what led Eastman and Laird's comics to becoming HUGE and all, but they act like people only care about the Fred Wolf TMNT cartoon, like the others aren't as loved, whether it be simple shirts and caps or them being playable in crossovers like Brawlhalla or Nick All-Star Brawl. it's the exact same meatriding Power Rangers had for MMPR and it sucks because there are fans of the other stuff and instead of them being represented, most of the time it's always nostalgia that wins. i hope Mutant Mayhem breaks this tradition and we get TMNT representation from other series than just TMNT 1987

I'm really glad someone finally said all of this. It always floors me when people demand something more like the classics, but then when they get that very thing they asked for, they then complain about how they want studios only making new stuff and not trying to capitalize off of our nostalgia. The worst for me is people who are fans of both Digimon and Pokemon as a lot of them have been complaining for years about the fact that the anime refused to let go of Ash and finally give us a new story, yet many of these same people gave up on Digimon the exact second they decided to do just that with Tamers. I've even seen quite a few people respond to Disney's Tangled this way. These very people demanded animated Disney films be more like those of the 90's, then along came this film to give us just that, a traditional classic style fairytale that wasn't too ambitious but still added just enough newer elements to help it feel fresh, and what did these people do? Complained that it was too much like the classics. Granted, these people are far fewer in number than the first example I gave, but they still popped up every so often.

When I saw the title to this video, I thought you were trying stir up an argument. But agree with at least two things you said.
"I only really care if it's done well."
I don't just want my favorite stories to be revived, I want them to do what the original failed to do. Digimon Adventure Tri and 2020 are perfect examples of revives that did what the original failed to do. Even Teen Titans Go, despite the internets hatred for it, did things the original failed to do.
"Some people have been dying for the continuation of a series that's been long dead and they still haven't gotten it."
I've been waiting over ten years for Mega Man Battle network and Jimmy Two-Shoes to come back and the only straws I have to grasp are Capcom saying they don't want to deny any series a sequel (and this was when asked about the future of Battle Network) and Edward Kay stating he wouldn't rule out a Jimmy Two-Shoes reboot.

That bit about having a para-social relationship with characters is a point I've learned to embrace. I went from a time where I wanted to craft real relationships that were just as strong as the friendships portrayed in heartfelt media. But for all the times I thought that it could happen, it just didn't and sooner or later people just fade away. The fictional characters are the only ones that remain to even provide a laugh. Real people aren't there for you in your darkest days. Fiction always was though, and that's the reality.

Excellent video! You have a lot of good thoughts on this! A few points I want to make though
    1. I view nostalgia as a seasoning. It's something not everyone is a fan of, and even for those who like when nostalgia is involved in the plot, if you don't have a good meal, no amount is seasoning is going to make it taste good, and the abundance of seasoning comes off as annoying.
    2. I think kh 3's issue is that they force the Disney worlds in without them being connected to the main plot in any way. If would've been nice to fight an organization member or 2 but no, you don't get any story progression till the end of the game which I think partially ruined the story for me.

I think when it comes to reamkes, one of the only circumstances that I think CAN justify it is a big innovation in technology. You know things like a huge picture quality upgrade. Like for Example I think Pokemon Fire Red/Leaf Green are very good remakes because they keep the feel of the original game, while also being an indisputable graphical improvement and fixes a lot of the glitches and problems that plagued the original and adds a lot of extra features and post game content. A remake from the same franchise that I think doesn't work is the Pokemon Briliant Diamond/Shining Pearl. While you can argue its a graphical improvement (I personally disagree with that asertion, but could at least see someone making the argument), it straight up has less features than the original game. In my opinion for a remake to work it needs to strongly evoke the same feelings of the original while having some form of significant improvement over the original to justify its own existence.
