Agreed, and it's similar to what Endora did when Maurice tried to zap Darrin. Endora doesn't like Darrin, doesn't like the marriage, but she is loyal to Samantha.
Well, when Sam and Maurice lost their powers in A PLAGUE ON MAURICE AND SAMANTHA, Darrin thought he'd challenge Maurice, until Sam warned him, "Careful." Endora threatened him with the threat he could end up a leaping lizard, after al.
In some few cases, Endora did defend Darrin, for Sam's sake. Most if the time she was trying to break up the marriage.
There is one thing that Endora did was to play up to Frank. Phyllis sometimes semed to project her aches and pains onto others, like here. If she only knew who and what Sam is. 🙂

She really is. She was always very rude. “I think i have a sick headache” And she was jealous of Endora all of the time by constantly making snooty remarks, like “Oh, Do you live here now?” She was really disrespectful at times

I love that they used older actors on the show. So many fantastic performers. I can't think of any recent show that uses so many older and even very elderly actors.

I loved Endora. She was awesome. Darrin’s mother always seem to criticise Samantha even though she wasn’t being obvious about it you can still tell. She was the intrusive one. Endora was the best

She was so intrusive and rude that I actually was waiting for Endora to put a whammy of a spell on her.
Fun fact: Mabel Albertson was the mother of the writer George Englund and (until the mid 1970's), the mother-in-law of the unforgettable Cloris Leachman, This means that, for a time, Mr. Englund was the son and husband of actresses who played annoying women on prime time comedies both named Phyllis!
All kidding aside, despite the union going asunder with Mr. Englund, Miss Leachman cherished her children's grandmother Miss Albertson and, in fact, was Miss Albertson's primary caregiver in her last years before Miss Albertson's death from Alzheimer's at age 81 in 1982!
Mabel was also the sister of actor Jack Albertson ("Chico and the Man").

But Dick York played it so well comedically, unlike Dick Sargent who was such a curmudgeon - the only smiles that ever came from that guy were caustic ones

Any episode with "Mrs. Stevens" is a good one. Say what you want about "Gladys Kravitz", but Mrs. Stevens' parts were written perfectly, and only Mabel Albertson could play that part.
Phyllis is definitely the most intrusive mother-in-law. I really like Endora.

The cast that Ms Montgomery surrounded herself was nothing short of perfection! The tense relationship between the mother in laws is 100% the actresses skill! Their use of their voice, facial expression, deliverance of lines, painted the rival picture to perfection! I read that Mabel Anderson , who played Mrs Stephens, was loved by everyone on set, was extremely professional and nice and was great friends with the superb Agnes Moorehead and Marion Lorne! Ms Mooreheads constistent performances are perfection! She was the perfect antagonist for the show! I dare anyone not to be carried away, bewitched, and fall in love with these people!

Her name was Mabel Albertson. Her younger brother was Jack Albertson from Chico and the man.
One reason the show is still so great after nearly sixty years is the caliber of the actors.

The difference is that Samantha was always nice and polite to her mother in law, we can’t say the same for that bigoted Darwin
Darrin doesn't even ATTEMPT to get along with Endora or to even be civil to her or anyone in her family. Sam bends over backwards to please and cater to Phyllis
Darrin was treated with real cruelty at times by Endora. But then, he was insulting to her every time he saw her, before she'd even say anything. Plus he held Samantha back and demanded she not use her natural gifts, which sadly she put up with.
Please remember these are not living beings. It’s a SHOW?

Darrin did not hold Samatha back. She CHOSE to marry a mortal. She wanted to live a mortal's life. But most of all, Samatha did not tell Darrin she was a witch until AFTER they were married. Who is the victim here?
Until it put her in a state of ill health and Darwood nearly lost her...

Let’s not forget that Endora was a nightmare to Darrin. Why is Phyllis getting flack for her passive aggressive criticism of Samantha while Endora was outright abusive to Darrin.

What a great cast and show. I have to say i was always partial to Endora. She was so supportive of Samantha and never took any anti-witchcraft crap from Darrin. And the anti-witchcraft stuff is my only criticism of Darrin, cause he really loved samantha
I had always felt sorry for Mrs. Stevens. She really should have been given fair opportunity to have a real relationship with her own granddaughter. The episodes involving Mrs. Stevens always left me feeling angry. You know. Like when kids stomp their feet and yell "Thats not FAIR!!

Phyllis tries to project her feeling about Darrin's health onto Sam. She says Sam looks a little under the weather. She does it again in SAMANTHA'S SUPER MAID. In that episode, Phyllis has an ulterior motive, trying to impress a wealthy woman in the neighborhood, by suggesting tbat they get a maid, to help boost Darrin up the ladder of success.
Sometimes, even Sam's relatives frustrate her, including her Mother. Sam and Darrin are caught between both mothers. At least Sam tries to be nice to Phyllis. Serena, that's a different story. 😀

i grew up watching bewitched i love this show. i have elder relatives who are very old school i wonder if they ever watched the show and if they did what did they think about it? My Mother and my aunt are very old school they don't believe in pets they think all animals belong outside not even a dog or a cat is allowed inside the house my cousin Bruce has red hair and he has a cat now his mother my aunt wont go visit him because he has a cat in the house. lol.

My first MIL was just like Mrs. Stephens. Very judgemental. Always eavesdropping and I could never please her. Her abusive son could do no wrong. I was always the "bad" guy. I can fully relate to this episode

Endora hands down. She's ALWAYS there and can do so without notification by just appearing out of thin air. She also spies on him in order to catch him doing something OR using witchcraft to make him say or do something. I love her, but she's a nightmare.
