  • Elden Ring's DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, is expansive, but it's ending seems deceptively simple. Let's break it down and see what lies beneath the surface.

    Here's the cut Miquella dialogue:
I hereby swear. To every living being, and every living soul. Now comes the age of our eden.A thousand year voyage guided by compassion.Tarnished one.Beginning here, love encompasses all.Aspiring Lord of the old order. No living thing will be denied, no deed censured. If you have known sin, if you grieve for this world,I am ready. To embrace the whole of it.then yield the path forward to us.Let us go together. To I, Miquella,Radahn, my promised consort.and my promised consort, Radahn.
Some of the above lines obviously would be one or the other. And maybe the extra ending would have been the Age of Eden as opposed to the Age of Compassion!

I’m a fervent believer that Radahn didn’t agree with the Vow due to him not having Leonard at his side.

Something I noticed just an hour ago playing with Radahns armour on is that the armour (both the OLD and the new) has Miquellas sigil/emblem on the upper part of the cape! The same sigil that appears when casting Miquellas spells! It's literally on Radahns back even in the base game! You can also find St.Trinas sword in Caelid, as well as a large amount of Miquella Lillies overlooking Radahns arena (it's got the most dense amount of Miquella Lilies in the game).

Lmao... no it doesn't theres a whole field of them in a different area... no where near Caelid
People STOP creating context where it doesnt exist.... also thats not Miquella's symbol...
Its similar but i think its actually his own. They have distinct differences.. Rahdan has two lions beneath his tree(possibly representing Radagan and Godfrey) also look at the top.
Miquellas top is a rounded young sapling. Radhan's tree top is spread open into 3 branches on either side aswell there is some kind of crowning symbol above those 6 branches in the center possibly the gravity symbol like on his swords. He needed to sacrifice his twin just to kill Radahn or weaken him enough for capture.
Its much more likely Radahn was allied with Ranni and Rykard. There lots of evidence proving this. The only thing that would change this is if Ranni really is a puppet of Miquella like her ingame area implies with dozens of confirmed context clues...
Unfortunately we wont really know because from got lazy and decided to fuck all of us over to go work on somthing new...
Honestly idk if im down for another let down like Elden Ring... how can you have such amazing gameplay and fuck up the one thing people love the most about this series.. the lore...
Honestly all the lore channels should just move on because they just put this story to sleep..and its never getting back up..

I think Miquella realized how screwed up this age of compassion would actually be, because the first cross where he abandoned St. Trina reads "Here I abandon my fear and vacillation" implying he had to remove St. Trina in order to convince himself that this is the right thing to do

I was thinking is it the place where the meteor landed from tgw, a place which still has connection to it now that the fingers are senile or dead. At first I thought maybe all the bodies there died from the impact because they now seem petrified and some are in positions that suggest they died in that pose in a flash and got preserved that way. If the bodies are from a slaughter Marika comitted, maybe there's some radiation from the impact site that preserved them, or that Marika triggered when she solidified her godhood..it literally solidified the bodies and others standing there too.
Its kinda ironic that Miq is trying to shed his heritage while doing the exact same thing as his mom. He doesn't commit massacres himself tho, he gets others to do it for him. Actually now I think about it, Marika does the same, that "charm"..it maybe a part of the deal. Marika was "seduced" by tgw, becomes its vessel, so has its components including this charm within her, until the shattering or until Miq inherits it. I'm unclear whether the demigods all took their great rune only after shattering or (some) were born with it, since its mentioned Malenia's was "supposed to be the greatest", it sounds like she was born with it then?
Ranni sets the world free from the influence of tgw, so she wouldn't go to that gate if its indeed the impact site or its tied to tgw in another way.
The gate itself doesn't give a benevolent vibe obviously and I don't think "becoming a god" there is the natural order, its tgw's order, that's why it doesn't fit the world and everything in it and starts to/is open to rot. Its an order from some space entity with delusions of grandeur who doesn't even care about this world but likes to take credit for creating it. Ofc Marika fiddled with the runes on top of that. Ironically, her godhood started with death and suffering, her own included, she ascended thanks to and amid a bloody massacre literally surrounded by death, yet death is the part she wanted to remove from the world and deny..ofc that was never gonna work. That's why she hid the shadow lands, to hide how she ascended from death.

@@illyria7756 One thing I found weird is that TGW hasn't been communicating with the fingers at all, as stated by the Metyr's remembrance and weapon. Metyr the mother of fingers has been trying to communicate with TGW but never got a response. A plausible theory from Gingy is that the two fingers "communicating" with TGW in the main game is actually them communicating with Metyr, and Metyr basically "winging it" or standing in while waiting for TGW to respond to her, but it never did.

Radahn was definitely manipulated into promising Miquella to be his consort. there would be no other reason why Malenia want sent to deliver Radahn to Miquella (in this case making it so Radahn is so weak he is able to have his flickering soul taken from his decaying body and placed into the body of mogh which through battle strengenths his soul so that he can fufill his promise to miquella that he made unwillingly)

I think Miquella wants complete control of the universe/multiverse. I also do think miquella genuinely wants peace in the universe. Miquella power is that he is able to enchant anything.
Miquella enchanted all he came across with. He has plans to eliminate all outer gods using whatever means necessary, even sacrificing Mohg and using Radahn. Maybe after eliminating all outer gods, he will be able to cure Godwyn and resurrect everyone.
In the end, Miquella will enchant everything in the universe. The whole universe will bend to his will. Only then in his mind will peace and compassion exist.

  • @todd3143

i think i know what’s going on. there are 2 ways of becoming a god, but both are technically by pairing the empyrean with another: a god sponsor, and/or a king consort.
for ranni, she paired herself with the dark moon (i think the dark moon is called celes, because the manus metyr is a house of worship for metyr, so the manus celes is a house of worship for celes), and us, her king consort. malenia has no king consort, but she’s paired with the rot, and when we slay her it’s “god slain” instead of “legend felled”. elden beast is a god because it is paired with the greater will, or something.
so who did marika pair with when she became a god? she was spurred by the two fingers (probably because how close her home is to the finger ruins), so probably the greater will, but unlike malenia who just let her god take over, marika used the divine gate. the divine gate requires a vessel, a lord’s soul and an empyrean, so who is marika’s lord and vessel? maybe radagon. 2 halves joined in the same vessel.
this is why miquella abandoned his other half. he needed strength to carry out his thousand year kingdom, so he and radahn will be another marika - radagon situation: 2 souls inhabiting the same body. that’s why the remembrance carries both of them, because they have, or are, becoming one being. furthermore, unlike other mounted bosses, like nameless king or prince lothric, radahn and miquella don’t attack one after another, their attacks are simultaneous. radahn’s swordplay is paired with miquella’s light. if we hand’g stopped miquella, miquella’s soul would fully fuse with radahn’s soul inhabiting mohg’s body, and such a force is unstoppable.
i think there should have been an ending where we allow miquella to take the throne and see his vision come to pass, but i also think we didn’t need to. how can a sightless, heartless, loveless god be compassionate?
and if you were wondering what his kingdom might look like, i think i should mention that miquella is extremely similar to his mother. miquella charms people to follow him and do his bidding. marika charmed the hornsent grandma into revealing where and how to use the divine gate, then betrayed her. marika used messmer and then hoarah loux to carry out her purges. miquella would likely use radahn as well as others he manages to charm to subjugate others under his vision as well. marika’s age was supposed to be bountiful, to be full of life and void of death, yet we found this supposed utopia in ruins. can we say that miquella’s kingdom will be any different?
i think there were 2 major themes in this dlc: parenting or family and vengeance. there is messmer who is an exceptional son up until his death, and there is ymir who seeks to be a mother to his reborn child as a coping mechanism for his passing. there is the hornsent and igon whose thirst for vengeance led to their demise. what goes around comes around, and try as he might, there is no way miquella can be better than his parent

His age of “compassion” is not about looking out for the downtrodden as you mention, it’s about compelling all to have compassion and love for HIM. Ansbach literally tells us that in game and in the trailer. Miquella has the power to compel the love of others while he himself has divested himself of love TO others as stated by his crosses scattered through the land. So everyone will love him whether they would want to or not.

This is why I thought Freyja is frankly unreliable. I think it’s merely her impression of Radhan. He still doesn’t strike me as someone who would agree to be revived to begin with, it feels like he’d brand it dishonorable. Like, would Radahn not bring up how that may dishonor all the KIA Redmanes that he surely holds close? He might see it as an insult to their memory.
I feel like there was no two sided vow, Miquella offered it and Radahn declined. This is the same guy who venerates 2 Elden Lords. That is, blending admiration for both his father Radagon and of course Godfrey. He’d see this vow as traitorous.
Also a note on Radahn’s mechanical movements in cutscenes - he seems to move almost robotically in the DLC version, as though he’s being controlled. In the base game, his cutscene movements were lifelike, after all, it’s still his actual body there.
This is why I think Radahn even fights us, he’s entirely being controlled by Miquella to do so.

    • @brandonsmith6790

@@Drew_621 While I do believe Freyja’s words is just her opinion.
I also believe there was a Vow at one point in time between Radahn and Miquella because there is both visual evidence and dialogue that supports the theory that he was a lot closer to is Carian Roots then the GO
      - There is a Moon Alter used by Carian’s and there ancestors
-Rykard has a picture of Radahn in his manor
-Iji Ranni’s war consular help make weapons for the Redmanes
Has far as we know the games written reason for why he fought conquered the stars was to defend Selia.
Overall to me Radahn only look up Godfrey and Radagon has strong warriors not because they are apart of the GO
As for Radahn’s connection with Miquella on the surface they have no connection but one piece of lore that is mysterious about Miquella is his connection to the Carians
I originally thought that was from Ranni do to the summoning bell but no that we know Miquella and Radahn has a connection that could be the missing link
Loretta the Carian knight who wants to bring albaneric’s to a safe haven goes to the halitree how was she able to find it sense it’s hidden to the public I mean sure she can be a badass and find it herself or could be go to Radahn the Carian prince who has a albaneric as his best friend and a connection to Miquella for now is she went to him for help.
There is also that mysterious sword that Miquella crafted in the style of a Carian knight sword people are now speculating that it could have been a ceremonial marriage sword that Miquella was gonna give to Radahn
As for the battle of Aoenia I think a lot of people are not taking into consideration is that it was the Shattering and all the Demigods were tainted in some way do to the Great Runes which caused a all out war do to their ambition Radahn was affected just like the rest of them and more then likely want back on his vow to Miquella believing he can grab power his own way
Miquella sent Meliana to either subdue or kill Radahn and that lend to the stalemate and Meliana desperate to win unleashed the rot I don’t believe Miquella intended for the rot to happen else why would he go out of his way to heal Freyja

Why tf would anyone think godwyn would be the final boss, didnt the lore explicitly state that miquella was entirely unsuccessful in granting godwyn true death? Also if miquella revived godwyn, it would clash with miquellas symbolism. Hes forever youthful and quits contantly like an indecisive little kid. Gave up curing malenia, gave up the haligtree and all his followers, gave up mercifully ending godwyn, gave up literally everything. The one thing that he couldnt give up on wanted nothing to do with him, that radahn would rather die then become miquellas consort, which is probably the agreement that miquella made with radahn, not realising miquella was 100% serious.
    "Dear brother become my consort"
    "Over my dead body."
    "Bet. Say less."
Not saying his research into godwyn was what gave him the idea, but i am saying it probably helped. Dudes main pre dlc goal was researching death and rebirth. In fact malenia being rot and miquella being a flower before bloom represent the first halfs on a two part cycle.
Think of it like this. Miquella is the egg, and malenia is the cocoon. Not a perfect analogy but follow with me. The egg becomes the catterpillar, and then begins to change into its second state a butterfly in a more esoteric mythical way. In the intem descriptions (i dont know which ones just that they are crafting items.) That first its starts of as a seed, then sprouts into a flower. Then it dies, ROTS, and becomes a tree. Because marika removed the rune of death, the two couldnt reach their second states because the tree and the flower while beautiful, qre the first signs that one day the plant will die, because it has finished growing.
Miquella just wanted to treat the symptoms when he is infact example 1 of why everything in elden ring is wrong.

Oh my gosh, sorry to spam your comments, but the Celebrants dancing outside the windmills have ornamentation in the same shape as Marika’s rune/Divine Gateway and is covered in flowers. In the DLC, you can pick up festive grease that “imparts a festive incantation that grants the wielder a scant few runes on landing attacks. The delightful festival is an old tradition; one old enough for the Erdtree to tacitly tolerate its endurance.” It’s like the irl Maypole festive in that it’s a pagan practice, but tolerated.m the holy order. The grease has the same flowers as what’s found in the Hinterlands and Dominula. It feels like this practice could lead to the birth of “gold” seen from the frenzy flame as hornsent saints are flayed and piled high.

To act on behalf of the God. The god is a complete spiritual being vs. the consort being the physical. Together they rule. The same thing happens with Marika, which is why we dont fight her at the end, rather her consort Radagon with her spirit being attached to it as one.

I didn’t realize until now that the consort isn’t someone Miquella intends to have sex with, ew, but his duality in godhood, like Marika/Radagon. Is that why he had to abandon St. Trina? He already has a distinct aspect of himself, and needed to shear it away?
I could just be totally wrong, because understanding Elden Ring lore is like trying to remember a dream.

So I just thought about it, but my friend questioned why we didn't need the Rune of Death in order to kill Miquella as a God. Well I don't think he had fully completed that transformation since that memory was left behind. That was likely when Radahn initially agreed to become his Consort before later changing his mind. Because Miquella hadn't cast that off he hadn't fully ascended and thus we can kill him. This also means that there are multiple ways of becoming a god since he had to cast off Trina while Marika did no such thing with Radogan. Maybe he didn't need to use the gate at all and it was more symbolic? I'm less certain on that but still some interesting info.

Besides disliking the ending as a whole, bro i get this was supposed to be written by GRRM, but did we need gay incest of two siblings by the end? we did not, but that's what we got somehow, some nerds try to defend it by saying consort means companion but we all know it's literally never used in that way, it's used as a partner/lover of a monarch/royalty.
Also, i know this is not related to lore, but does it feel to anywone else like half the DLC map is basically empty? gorgeous art and world, but just empty, devoid of encounters and items/dungeons. Most points of interest are within the middle of the map but the top and especially the bottom (Charo's hero grave, Cerulean cost, finger ruins + the mountains towards Bayle very empty)

What I would have loved is the following:
Miquella goes to the Land of Shadows to give his brother Godwyn a true death. To do so, in the final boss fight Miquella sacrifices himself to give his own soul into the deformed body of Godwyn. The plan goes horribly wrong and we have to kill the grotesque monster that is Godwyns body with Miquellas soul in it. We grant Godwyn a true death thus fulfilling Miquelösd wish and honoring his sacrifice.
When he finally dies, Miquella says goodbye to Torrent. The End.
Everyone saw it coming that Miquella was not really a good guy. In this ending the twist would be that Miquella actually is good.
Side note: I really like that Miquellas followers get along as long as the charm works. And when it beaks everyone goes at each others throat. It’s a cool concept that Miquellas vision could have actually worked but at what cost? Safety under control or a free life in danger :)

Fromsoft is still one of my favorite companies but this DLC is a complete freaking disaster....
When it was still early on and I was expecting more explanations and dialog this dlc seemed like a 10/10 now thats its over... This the most disappointed ive been with From since i saw the were wasting their time on another god awful AC game... (seriously those games are so goddamn boring and silly with a terrible game loop and the worst control set up in any modern game. If all From made was AC they would be an D+ tier company at best...)
This feels so rushed and underrealized...
Its obvious Fromsoft hates Elden Ring.... idky but its impossible not to feel it in game...
The corner cutting in the basegame was frustrating but understandable and it wasnt so over the top... but the DLC...? Its like a collective go f yourselves we're edgey and do whatever we want...and we are done with this game now.
They answer no questions from the base game at all and instead introduce more with absolutely no context at all.
The Demon Souls, Dark Souls, Sekiro and Bloodborne worlds all have context to flesh out there stories....
Elden Ring had partial context spanning hundreds of generations as you progressed you gained more and more context bit ultimately not enough to understand. .. this DLC should have been the culmination of all that lore build up...
Not only is it not... it seems they intentionally ignored the basegame and just started a whole new mini sequel with an even less satisfying ending..
This DLC just doesnt feel like Fromsoft... the gameplay didnt even feel like fromsoft most of the time... besides Romina and Lord of Frenzy Flame every boss fight feel either way too easy or complete bullshit...
Everyone is cheesing Commander Gaius right now... I watching it happen everytime im summoned to that fight...
Thats not how they intended us to fight him buy its the only way for 95% of builds to beat him because hes clearly broken...
His lance has a roughly 2ft invisible hit box in all directions around it and you can only target his head only so you constantly miss even some melee swings..
Hes not impossible to beat uou just have to exploit the bad mechanics. Its just a sloppy broken mess of a boss that they refuse to acknowledge.
Their nasty online responses to one of the most loyal and respectful gaming communities in the world was also a good indicator of where Fromsoft is headed..
I predict this DLC is just the beginning of Fromsoft's road to becoming just another untrustworthy hated developer that was crushed under the weight of their success.

I love how this DLC makes zero sense and ignores every single piece of lore about Miquella, Malenia, and Godwyn, and nobody seems to even notice. I think the devs forgot which family Miquella was in. Or maybe Rykard and Miquella got switched at birth.
What was the point of the eclipse and the failed resurrection of Godwyn? Apparently he never actually intended to and seemed to know exactly how to resurrect Radahn instead. And what was the point of the Night of Black Knives if Ranni could have just “divested her flesh” like Miquella? And not one word about Malenia or the rot god who seemed to be guarding the gate using the sealing tree.
I keep thinking I’m missing some huge lore point, but no. It just now leads me to believe that no lore from the main game can be trusted if it in any way pertains to the royal families.

Of course there isn't a age of compassion ending. That ending is you being charmed my miquella in the last fight. This is a god associated with sleep (formerly) and compelling affections against others will. Radahn had to be killed to be Miquellas consort, he did not consent to this. Miquellas age of compassion is lobotomizing everyone so they can play nice. No free will. You love him, the hornset love him, the albunorics love him and we all get along because we love him.
The reason there are mirrors to Ranni is because while both are rejections of the erdtree order, one is giving it's people free will outside the influence of the greater will, the other is simply enacting more control albiet not the greater wills'.
Theres not a choice of a new ending because Miquellas goal isn't even an option. DO you want to be a mind controlled zombie? Likely not, the only recourse is conflict with him and defending the ending we chose in the base game. Miquella is here to challenge us, if not as an agent of the erdtree/Marika and our chosen rune, then as the liberator of the lands between or even a doom cultist intent on burning everything away with the frenzied flame. All of these things Miquella opposes in one way or another.

I personally think Miquella brought us to the land of shadows because he need us to open the way to the divine gate. I don’t think him divesting his aspects allowed him through the sealing tree, I think that was needed to attain godhood. I mean, if this isn’t why we’re in the realm of shadows, then why did Miquella invite us along? We’re not under his charm and are being led by grace, I could be completely wrong here but that’s my take on our journey through the shadow realm.

I think war would be inevitable because of the constant power struggles perpetrated from the demigods and outer gods. That’s why his divinity would be a prison. The realities of divine power would circumvent any noble intentions, just like Marika’s intentions to remove death were unsustainable. It’s sort of like when a company goes public. The company had a purpose when it was private and it made a service or product to fulfill that purpose. Once it’s publicly traded, its sole purpose is to make money. Godhood is the same in Elden Ring. The purpose of divinity becomes holding onto power. Marika’s Soreseal depicts this as a burden or curse. This is why St. Trina plead for us to kill Miquella, and it’s why Marika yeeted the Elden Ring.

And so Malenia obliged the best she could, but in the end, she wasnt enough. So she released the rot to fullfil their promise and beat Radahn. Her saying "Miquella awaits thee" is just noble way to say "I won bitch, now pay up". Too bad the rot turned Radahn hollow and he needed to be put down, but Malenia wouldn't beat him without that.

Pretty much the only way I can think of for Miquella to erase all the prior eras of hatred and bring his Age of Compassion into being is compel everyone to get along. Is it really peace if no one has free will? Can Miquella really bring compassion at all when he's renounced the ability to love? I'm a Miquella fangirl, pre-xpac, but monster seems the only descriptor possible for what he has done to himself. Basically, he seems to be the living embodiment of "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."

marika‘s becoming god is different from miquella.almost completely different ritual.
marika ascend to godhood, while in miquella‘s case the secret scroll says you need a lord to bring back a god, which means miquella was already a god but in some divine realm, this ritual was just to bring him back to the shadow realm.i think by giving up your flash and great rune a demigod can become a god,but a formless god, this is the ritual for a demigod to become a god.
while marika ascend from normal people to godhood by sacrifice a lot of lives(story trailer),but the whole ritual must be more than sacrifice lives.
