- In 1940, France fell and the Allies planned a cross-Channel assault on German occupying forces and to liberate France. The invasion would be codenamed Operation Overlord. With a strength of 2,876,000 Allied troops ready by May 1944, the largest armada in history were in preparation along with more than 1,200 planes. With uncertain weather, strategy disagreements, timing discussions, the order to proceed with the invasion was given on the 5th June.
On June 6, 1944, more than 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline, to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. With more than 5,000 ships and 13,00 aircraft supporting the D-Day invasion, the Allies gained a foot-hold in Continental Europe. It has been recorded that 4,426 Allied personnel were killed on D-Day.
Before the invasion, air and sea components played major roles with around 12,000 planes of the Allied air forces , which swept the Luftwaffe from the skies while Allied ships protected the English Channel. Meanwhile, airborne troops from the United States, Britain and Canada trained and rehearsed for their role in advance of the amphibious landings. In the invasion's early hours, over one thousand transports dropped 23,400 allied airborne troops over Normandy. Their mission was to secure the flanks and beach exits of the assault area.
The assault phase of Operation Overlord was known as Operation Neptune, which began on June 6, 1944, and ended on June 30, 1944, involved landing troops on beaches and all other associated supporting operations required to establish a beachhead in France. Allied code names for the beaches along the 50-mile stretch of Normandy coast targeted for landing were Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword.
4,426 men died so that freedom would live.

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning

I never served, but I honor the sacrifices that our veterans made, by collecting aircraft books, and going to air shows, and museums, to see the aircraft that fought in the various wars that the American forces have fought in.
LEST WE FORGET
Thank you for putting this together.

Well done nothing needed to be said , liked the monochrome touch . As the generations pass and new come to play their part, I hope they too will always respect the sacrifices of the old and new for our future. Condolences & sympathies to the family and friends for the most unfortunate loss of serving Squadron leader Mark Long. Whom we have no doubt viewed here in his typhoon. God bless 🫡
Thank you for your kind words

FOR THE FALLEN
BY LAURENCE BINYON (1914)
With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.
Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.
They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.
But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;
As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.
🇬🇧
