- A B-52H Stratofortress of the 69th Bomb Squadron "NIGHTHAWKS" from Minot Air Force Base arrives at RAF Fairford on the 22nd May 2024.
The B-52H Stratofortress is a long-range, nuclear and conventional heavy bomber that can perform a variety of missions. The bomber can fly at high subsonic speeds at altitudes reaching 50,000 feet. It has an unrefueled combat range in excess of 8,800 miles. The B-52H can carry precision guided ordnance with worldwide precision navigation.
The 5th Bomb Wing (5 BW) is a United States Air Force unit assigned to Air Force Global Strike Command's Eighth Air Force. It is stationed at Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota where this B-52H came from with callsign PENCE 21. The wing is also the host unit at Minot. The 5 BW is one of only two active duty Boeing B-52H Stratofortress wings in the United States Air Force, the other being the 2nd Bomb Wing at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana.
The squadron was first activated on 15 January 1941 at Langley Field, Virginia as the 69th Bombardment Squadron, one of the three original bombardment squadrons of the 38th Bombardment Group. The squadron trained with Martin B-26 Marauders, but also flew Douglas B-18 Bolos. In June 1941, the squadron moved to Jackson Army Air Base, Mississippi. After being inactivated on 31 December 1993, it was reactivated on 3 September 2009 at Minot Air Force Base, and assigned to the 5th Bomb Wing.

Oii Oii Ladies, gents and teddy bears, it was a fair old wait for this in the pouring rain and emotional weather but we got ‘em. Hope you enjoyed our video fresh from today’s aviation salmon counter. The iconic B-52H dropping in to RIDE HIGH. What a sound! Well, Fairford isn’t complete without the U-2 🤙🏼Drop us a line in the comments and don’t forget to click the LIKE button. Brilliant Nikos in emotional weather 👍👏
Ok i know the distance from Fairford to Coningsby. So that trip in emotional weather to be back for Lakenheath tomorrow. Sir i salute you 🫡 Great shots as always b-52 Sounds so good
Hi ted coningsby
Our good old B-52. By the time they are retired from service the design will be around 100 years old! She’s getting some new Rolls-Royce engines soon.
A sign of a good design , like Windows XP remained relevant and popular much longer than any other version , had to stop supporting it to force change
What a treat! That is what's special about Ted Coningsby Squadron, The effort Ted & Nikos go to, to bring this footage to us all is phenomenal. Out in all weathers & conditions, thank you ❤
This was a challenging, emotional, long wait Margo but it was worth it
A B52 and a U2 on a rainy day...thank you sir for your dedication!
Thanks David
1982-2002 USAF Security Policeman, name changed to Security Forces around mid 1990's. My first assignment 1982-1984 was at RAF Fairford. Loved it!! The Cotswold's is one of the most beautiful areas I've seen. Assigned to RAF Upper Heyford 1986-1990. Duty at U.H. NOT as fun due to the mission at that time. Still loved England though. Love your videos. Thanks!!
Thank you for serving sir
The U-2 pilot is encapsulated in a literal space suit, severly imparing movement and visability. They can't see well out the side and not at all behind because of the hard space helmet. So when landing it's almost impossible to precisly judge when the main "unicycle" wheel touches. Hance the need for another U-2 pilot to chase the plane in a hot-rod Dodge Viper to talk the pilot down by radio.
The U-2 is amongs the hardest planes to fly.
Thanks for this cool information👍!
Oiii oiii Trespire. It is such a demanding and difficult aircraft to fly indeed. Pretty much an astronaut in there
Wow, I was just about to ask why the cars were chasing it . I thought something might have been wrong 😳. Thank you 👌🇦🇺
@@leandabee These high altitude planes operate at the very edge of what's possible, both for man and machine.
If you're interested, you can see the same "space" suit in the following video :
SR-71 Last flight from Kadena AFB Okinawa, Japan.
I'll post the link in a seperate comment.
Not easy riding a bycicle wearing all that gear, never mind piloting a jet at 90,000 ft.
And if you happen to be a petrol head, you'll hear the most insane use of any car engines in aviation, twin screaming big V8 just to turn over those massive J-58 engines.
@@trespireFascinating, and thank you very much 👌. I found a couple of videos on this plane which I will watch soon 😃
Special! Super effort Ted and Nikos. Thank you ❤
Oiii oiii Margo thank you for the super thanks ❤️
Wow, that is huge! And the U2 - what an unusual plane, and landing! Thanks Ted and Nikos for being out in that dreadful weather and bringing us this vid

I’ve never seen one in the air but just to stand underneath it at Duxford is amazing. I can’t believe it gets off the ground the sheer size of it. Thank you for filming this iconic aircraft

Wow such a great noise, awesome plane 💪👌👍😍
Every time I see a B52 either in the flesh, film, picture etc I keep thinking of Dr Strangelove & I keep humming the tune

Oiiiii yeahhhh - beautiful Ted and Nikos ... awful weather, I would have loved to have seen these planes in the flesh ! But a big Thank you for the footage ..😊
Thanks Andrew 🤙🏼
That B-52 is from Minot AFB, North Dakota. I was stationed there from Sept 1985 to April 1987. I was munitions systems specialist and took a lot of munitions to those bombers.
Incredible stuff Ted and Nikos. Persistence pays off again for the iron man and bear of streaming. A very long day🫡❤️💪 Welcome to the Uk 🇬🇧 MT MINOT🇺🇸🇺🇸 LETS RIDE AND SEND IT
Oii Oii Davey 🤙🏼 long day but worth the wait for this. Ooohhh yeah
Outstanding Planes!!!!
They sure are
B-52 = Grandpa Buff!!! 😂
I knew a guy who worked on the electronics on the b52 bomber calvin clark thanks you for your sevice retried usaf gloucester
OMG WOW !!!!
Oohh yeah
Great vid, thanks for sharing. New to your channel so I just now see the artwork on your van. Pretty neat my friend, whoever made it.
Oii oiii thank you and welcome to the channel and squadron too. Ooohh yeah
Top Job Ted (supported by Nikos, obviously!), really great to see those two arrivals. I was driving down to the South West today in the appalling weather, really great of you to brave it to bring us such great footage. 👍😊
Thank you 🤙🏼🇺🇸
quite a crosswind for the BUFF - love the video
Thanks Robert
I have a 1955 Chevy Bel-Air. The Dragon Lady and the B-52 yrace their beginnings back to this time frame.
I missed them by 10 mins, drive down, realised I missed them, drove home again 😂
The BUFF is so ugly, its beautiful. B52 and U2, absolutely iconic. Those yanks certainly knew how to build planes in the 50s and 60s.
👍🐋SAN FRANCISCO BAY
A monstrous machine!😮
Great footage as always. Two of my favourite aircraft there. I love how they chase the U2 in the cars on the landing.
Oii oiii Rob thanks man ooohh yeah
Interesting landing gear on the U2, don't think I have seen one before. Would be like landing a plane on an ice skate lol. Thanks for the videos, brilliant.
Thanks Babs. Yeah it needs chasing support vehicles too
Can’t get enough of those whistling TF-33s! I wonder if the new RR engines will sound the same?
Ooooohhh yeah
@ 1:23 Bird…yep mother has landed all good to cross
Think that’s it a deployment of 4 you should have popped in nikos i only live down the road Trowbridge
Ooohh yeah
Wow, that B52 Squeals on approach. Looks so unstable as it lands with that never ending wingspan. Then its drag chute deploys to bring the beast to a halt. Superb! footage!of this less than a myth, more of a 20th century legend bomber. Absolutely monstrous Aircraft. Looks like a handful to fly? But not being a pilot, I can't comment. 😮🫡. We see alsorts on here but the U2 Dragonlady has always appeared odd looking to me. Nevertheless would still like to see one in the flesh. Great capture In what can only be described as appalling weather. Thanks for standing out there, striving for the best shots Ted and Nikos and grabbing the best action possible. Simply one of the many reasons why your channel is now 51.8K. What?
18600k when I joined. Awesome..!
Oiii oiii Dan thanks man
Crew Chief--580173, B-52 G model. 320th Bomb Wing (h)
Mather AFB, California...1974-1980.
Great footage. You got a rare sight, a 'fully loaded' U2. With all the sensors. Not often they have all of them on one plane.
Oii oiii Stephen 🤙🏼
I knew they were heading back soon because an Atlas Air cargo 747 flew in the day before from Minot.
Love how the white cop Charger goes after the plane for speeding...
Due to U2 pilot being so far aft there is very little runway visibility. The chase cars talk them down by calling out altitude to touchdown. Some yt vids from the chase car perspective are around.
Another good video but why don’t you play the comms that would be good to hear on take off and landing
The comms were on, the rain probably drowned the radio lol
Watch out Fairford, my Monster in law is in town. the dragon Lady ;-)
Wow! 😲♥️♥️♥️
Ooohhh yeah
Was that last landing a Top secret with mapping information?
You DO NOT want to recover that drag chute when it's wet. Trust me on this one.
Sounds like you've had some experience on this. 🤣
2:03 hoping it stops before it gets into the next county ..........scarey to watch !
Oii oiii Geoff and Steve
Is that a fresh deployment?
There huge how many are coming to Fairford
Nothing announced as yet there were 2 last year one static one flying
We think 4 for what we’ve seen today as it looks as if they’ve started their sorties
@@TedConingsby thank you
I was there this afternoon down at the side of the 09 end and very noisy
Did the last plane have a wheel missing ?
No, the U2 has tiny wheels on the wingtips that "drop off" after take-off, all to save on weight. After landing they are reattached so that it can taxi again
4:25 what exactly is the purpose of the white vehicle?
A couple of reasons. Landing the U-2 is difficult - close to the ground it likes to hover - and the pilot has poor visibility to know when the gear touch down. The chase car will be in radio contact to let them know when the plane is on the deck. The car also contains personnel who will attach the pogos to the outer portion of the wing for taxiing.
ruclips.net/user/results?search_query=U-2+chase+car
Well explained on a reply, but yes to assist landing and taking off too I think they use them.
Dragon Lady
Are the B52s restricted to Fairford?
In the UK, yes. It's the only runway able to take them....
@@stevesstuff1450 Cool fact if u didn't already know; because of its runway length RAF Fairford was an alternate landing location in Europe for the Space Shuttle. Thankfully it was never needed because the Shuttle never had to land outside of the US.
@@TheRipper5418 : Yes, I did know that; it is indeed a cool fact though. 😀
In some ways yes, it is the USAF's only European airfield for heavy bombers and routinely supports Bomber Task Force (BTF) operations. It is the only support station for heavy bomber aircraft in the UK. As far as landing is concerned for the length of runway, Brize Norton would be most likely as diversion airfield, but this is just a guess.
He's so far forward he's pretty much blind piloting her
How did u know it would be there 😭😭
We had the second largest SAC base near us in Limestone Maine at Loring Airforce base.
Made redundant in the 1990's.
The USA is no longer a match for any adversary.
The woke and migration policies have ruined the west.
And i am a Brit from West Yorkshire
#2 comment. Just viewed on iPad, good grief, what aircraft, one so big, it has wing wheels and needs a parachute to help it slow, the other end of spectrum the ‘dragon lady’ with only a couple of wheels. Why did the vehicles go chasing after the dragon lady though
The vehicles chase the U2 for two reasons: to help the pilot by telling him how many feet to go before touchdown, pilot cannot judge that very well himself. the other car carries the little wheels to attach to the wingtips, after it has come to a stop. This so it can taxi again
@@arjenav5968 thank you, the pilot is so far back, he's the only person on board😁
Oiii Oii Julie 🤙🏼The vehicle assist the landing of the U2. They also assist with taxiing and take off too. It’s the fact that the pilot can’t really see a lot
what a big sexy beast!
BUFF
Wow that was amazing everything you could ask for in 5 minutes , a squeal, wheel puffs, parachute break( like I loved as a kid on the EE Lightening.) Wings that go on for forever .
Then a crazy plane, with a crazy shape that has to be chased down the runway and an awesome name
Then you remember what they do and how long they have been doing it, it's mind blowing.
Also would make a great line up at Glastonbury with their names on the poster , maybe Drew and 999 Meg could support them ❤❤
Oii oiii Rachel. This was worth the wait in the emotional weather ooohhh yeah
