Thats not how the story was written, as it was very clearly about Eggman and Sonic being mature and putting aside their differences for better cause and Tails malding that someone's standing in his spotlight. So the whole game has the vibe of an unpleasant car trip, getting a car broken and having to find a hostel while everyone in the group is passively aggressively bickering about each other. Sonic Adventure era Tails was definitely the peak of his character. The story of him coming out of Sonic's shadow and becoming a brave, strong, independent hero in his own right was great writing and was solidified in the second game
I'd argue that Frontiers Tails deserves to be a little higher for the development he got. Tails didn't get an arc on par with his Adventure story, but it's great for him to learn that he's still a capable hero in his own right and acknowledge how useless he's been in the past few games, or "wildly inconsistent" as he puts it.

@@RaiginAnimatorAre you sure you have to complete the game? I was able to switch to that “alternate ending” before completing the game. It automatically switched me to the new save with Amy, Knuckles, and Tails. I had switch back to main save to get the rest of the Original Story.

Tails surprisingly has the best combat in Boom, and he's a key role in many stages where he's 100% needed to open doors or getting to out of reach buttons with his buddy bots, he's got flying vents only he can use, also only Tails & Sonic can hydrodash, and Tails was able to free the gang when they got trapped with Lyric's attack. Bad game but Tails is really helpful / most helpful and I'd say I'd give him elite for being a core member for progression and constant involvement.
I genuinely think that the ranking for Sonic Adventure 2 was kinda unfair and that you should have put him in sidekick tier because I don't think that he's initially the reason how Eggman knew. I think in the game, he's just trying to make Tails feel bad. I'd give him a sidekick tier.
Tails is playable in Sonic 2 by going to the options. In Forces he is fixing up longtime ally E-123 Omega since E-102 Gamma has been dead since Sonic Adventure. In Adventure 2 Tails doesn't play identically to Sonic which is a fantastically good thing. The whole point of him using a mech like Eggman does is to simulate the intellectual battles of wits between the two. They're the tacticians and the engineers. It's what they do! In Sonic Rush Tails is basically Sonic's Mission Control so he's more of the "barely does anything" since he establishes key information with Sonic and helps make him generally aware of what's going on and how to stop it even if he doesn't get involved himself.
since spinoffs weren't included, sonic battle wasn't included-- sonic battle being one of tails' most useful appearances. tails fixes emerl, has some incredible moves for emerl to use (one of them being the best aerial) incredibly strong projectiles, and he hosts the VT.
So, whole thing about Frontiers, that update is specifically a story change, and since it seems like Sonic Team and Sega prefer that ending, it feels like it's safe to say that it's the canon one. If that's the case, he's easily an Elite tier, helping Sonic by collecting the emeralds with Amy and Knuckles, and even helping with the defense in the final battle. Also wanted to say that there are quite a few games I'm a little sad were left out, like Sonic Battle, which as also for the GBA, or the GameGear games, with two of his own game that would definitely let him be Elite. Still a fun video though.
Wait, they haven't confirmed whether or not the Final Horizon DLC is canon? I figured the whole point of them making that was because of fans complaining about how underwhelming the original final boss was, so that was their way of fixing it. I would be surprised if it was only a "What If?" scenario, considering a bunch of the dialogue with Sage and the other characters has some pretty big lore implications for the future of the series. Why put all that in there if it amounts to nothing?

I'd say it's canon, and maybe Ian Flynn said something about it, but I don’t really watch his BumbleKast thing, so I'm not 100% sure. I'm with you though when it comes to it being a surprise if it's not the canon ending.
You can actually play as Tails in OG Sonic 2 by going to options and choose Tails alone (yes you can play as Sonic alone aswell if you want) though he can't fly in that until the next game.

I think you're underrating Tails in Adventure 2. When Sonic gets locked up, the first thing Tails does is turn the Tornado into a flippin mech, flies to a maximum security prison and bulldozes his way through while also chasing Eggman off. Tails was a badass in that game.

Ngl you did Tails pretty dirty with the frontiers ranking, completely glossed over his character arc. How he’s realized how useless he’s been lately and affirming he’s going to work to change that. Probably one of Tails’ biggest moments in several games. And if you include the “alternate story” update, he helps collect the chaos emerald through the first gameplay of him in a 3D mainline game in over a decade. He at least deserves elite
Let's be honest here, realizing that he has been useless in the past last games isn't a character arc. It is himself finally arriving to the start line. One that he LEFT way behind in the early games (not to mention Tails Adventure, where, depending on the version, he either saved an achipelago while he was on holydays from his adventures with Sonic... or he was already a badass before even meeting with Sonic). Sure, so long as Team Sonic actually follows through, it gets the way to his actual character arc ready... but it's not one.
Small thing to point out: He is KINDA present in Sonic 4 Episode 1, as he pilots the rocket that takes Sonic to the final level. Barely does anything tier tho

To be fair, if you include narrative instead of focusing purely on gameplay, you could make an argument that sonic needed tales to defeat Eggman in sonic 2. He would’ve never gotten to the flying Fortress if tails didn’t fly them up there, and in the bad ending tails actually saves sonic’s life.

Not really. It’s just a boost game where classic sonic and modern sonic controls the same as in sonic generations. I’m gonna say it, generations and lost world are better than forces. You need to hear me out on why. I’ll give it that forces has good soundtrack. But the game controls almost the same as generations, the level design is literally boost to win, The bosses were lame except metal sonic and the final boss, classic sonic was here for no reason other than nostalgia, tails’s characterization is even worse than generations and lost world, infinite doesn’t think he’s weak although i’ll be one to give infinite some credit here. His mask is cool and his theme is good. Not to mention he bodies sonic a lot of times and he almost killed him and he creates a literal freaking sun just to try to surpass everyone like Mephiles did. Yeah I can’t deny that’s impressive. And the cutscenes had a lot of missed potential. That’s a most of the game that’s bad. Where forces has a lot of bad things that makes people hate it compared to generations where only 1 thing is mid and in lost world where only a couple things are bad I think generations and lost world takes it.

7:18 it makes me so mad that no one seems to remember 3 VERY important things 1. While yes, Tails is a genius, he is also only about 9 or 10. 2. At this point in the story, everyone including Tails thought that Sonic was captured or dead. If i was Tails, and i heard that my role model/big brother/the person that bascially raised me was now gone, and there was no way to get him back, i know i wouldnt be in the best of mental states. And finally 3. Eggman had been in control of the entire world for 6 months if i remember correctly. I dont care how smart or mature someone is, living everyday in fear of being captured or killed will definitely screw with your head, especially when you're a young kid. Basically my point is that yes, while Tails did defeat Chaos before, that was when he had the others to help support him, as well as the fact that he was prepared and in an at least decemt mental state. Is it really that big of a deal that a traumitized kid gets terrified and calls out for the one person who has always had his back? edit: and i dont wanna hear anything about the "they dont have canon ages anymore" thing. when forces came out they still did, and even now, these characters are still children and teenagers fighting a war again an insane scientist and a jackel that can warp reality in seconds.
This. Also, I don’t like how people get upset that Tails didn’t fight Infinite when he was first introduced. Tails doesn’t know who or what Infinite even is. I don’t know about anyone else, but if I were in Tails’ shoes, I also wouldn’t fight Infinite if I didn’t know a thing about him. And before anyone brings up the fact that Sonic fought Infinite without knowledge about him, that’s just part of Sonic’s personality. He’s cocky and willing to take on any challenge that doesn’t involve swimming. That’s just my take on it, at least. Quick Edit: I will say that I do think he was done kinda dirty in Forces, just not to the extent that other people do. I kinda wish he was playable instead of Classic Sonic, or at the very least was a fourth playable character, but that doesn’t make me think Tails was “ruined” by Forces. Also (I know I’m rambling, I’m sorry), to add to the Chaos point, in the cutscene where Sonic was getting beat up, Chaos 0 held Sonic’s fist in place and assisted in Sonic “dying.” Tails being frightened by someone who (as far as he knows) defeated/killed his best friend is pretty logical.

Tails surprisingly has the best combat in Boom, and he's a key role in many stages where he's 100% needed to open doors or getting to out of reach buttons with his buddy bots, he's got flying vents only he can use, also only Tails & Sonic can hydrodash, and Tails was able to free the gang when they got trapped with Lyric's attack. Bad game but Tails is really helpful / most helpful and I'd say I'd give him elite for being a core member for progression and constant involvement.

I genuinely think that the ranking for Sonic Adventure 2 was kinda unfair and that you should have put him in sidekick tier because I don't think that he's initially the reason how Eggman knew. I think in the game, he's just trying to make Tails feel bad. I'd give him a sidekick tier.
In Sonic 4 Ep 1, the rocket Sonic used to get to space was clearly made by Tails, due to it having his tails on it.
Its the same Tails mark 1 from Sonic the fighters.
Tails is playable in Sonic 2 by going to the options.
In Forces he is fixing up longtime ally E-123 Omega since E-102 Gamma has been dead since Sonic Adventure.
In Adventure 2 Tails doesn't play identically to Sonic which is a fantastically good thing. The whole point of him using a mech like Eggman does is to simulate the intellectual battles of wits between the two. They're the tacticians and the engineers. It's what they do!
In Sonic Rush Tails is basically Sonic's Mission Control so he's more of the "barely does anything" since he establishes key information with Sonic and helps make him generally aware of what's going on and how to stop it even if he doesn't get involved himself.
since spinoffs weren't included, sonic battle wasn't included-- sonic battle being one of tails' most useful appearances. tails fixes emerl, has some incredible moves for emerl to use (one of them being the best aerial) incredibly strong projectiles, and he hosts the VT.

So, whole thing about Frontiers, that update is specifically a story change, and since it seems like Sonic Team and Sega prefer that ending, it feels like it's safe to say that it's the canon one. If that's the case, he's easily an Elite tier, helping Sonic by collecting the emeralds with Amy and Knuckles, and even helping with the defense in the final battle. Also wanted to say that there are quite a few games I'm a little sad were left out, like Sonic Battle, which as also for the GBA, or the GameGear games, with two of his own game that would definitely let him be Elite. Still a fun video though.
Maybe when Saga makes Sonic's version of Tears Of The Kingdom. Tails will more useful like his Nintendo Counterpart Tulin.
Wait, they haven't confirmed whether or not the Final Horizon DLC is canon? I figured the whole point of them making that was because of fans complaining about how underwhelming the original final boss was, so that was their way of fixing it.
I would be surprised if it was only a "What If?" scenario, considering a bunch of the dialogue with Sage and the other characters has some pretty big lore implications for the future of the series. Why put all that in there if it amounts to nothing?
@utopian4769 It's kind of a toss up, but I will say that the implications do seem to point more towards it being canon. I'd say it's canon, and maybe Ian Flynn said something about it, but I don’t really watch his BumbleKast thing, so I'm not 100% sure. I'm with you though when it comes to it being a surprise if it's not the canon ending.
You can actually play as Tails in OG Sonic 2 by going to options and choose Tails alone (yes you can play as Sonic alone aswell if you want) though he can't fly in that until the next game.

I think you're underrating Tails in Adventure 2. When Sonic gets locked up, the first thing Tails does is turn the Tornado into a flippin mech, flies to a maximum security prison and bulldozes his way through while also chasing Eggman off. Tails was a badass in that game.
Skipped over Sonic 3 and Knuckles version of Tails where he's every bit as good as Sonic 3's Tails but with the added bonus of becoming Super Tails.

Ngl you did Tails pretty dirty with the frontiers ranking, completely glossed over his character arc. How he’s realized how useless he’s been lately and affirming he’s going to work to change that. Probably one of Tails’ biggest moments in several games. And if you include the “alternate story” update, he helps collect the chaos emerald through the first gameplay of him in a 3D mainline game in over a decade. He at least deserves elite
Let's be honest here, realizing that he has been useless in the past last games isn't a character arc. It is himself finally arriving to the start line. One that he LEFT way behind in the early games (not to mention Tails Adventure, where, depending on the version, he either saved an achipelago while he was on holydays from his adventures with Sonic... or he was already a badass before even meeting with Sonic). Sure, so long as Team Sonic actually follows through, it gets the way to his actual character arc ready... but it's not one.
Frontiers even makes a point of calling out Forces' depiction of Tails as being very out of character - that's how bad Forces' Tails was.

If the Advance games count, I feel like the Game Gear games should too. He was useless in 8-bit Sonic 2, but was playable in Chaos and Triple Trouble.

I still love the moments when they underestimate Tails, and he just clowns on those who underestimate him. Especially in the comics when he outsmarts Eggman even.
To be fair, if you include narrative instead of focusing purely on gameplay, you could make an argument that sonic needed tales to defeat Eggman in sonic 2. He would’ve never gotten to the flying Fortress if tails didn’t fly them up there, and in the bad ending tails actually saves sonic’s life.

Not really. It’s just a boost game where classic sonic and modern sonic controls the same as in sonic generations. I’m gonna say it, generations and lost world are better than forces. You need to hear me out on why. I’ll give it that forces has good soundtrack. But the game controls almost the same as generations, the level design is literally boost to win, The bosses were lame except metal sonic and the final boss, classic sonic was here for no reason other than nostalgia, tails’s characterization is even worse than generations and lost world, infinite doesn’t think he’s weak although i’ll be one to give infinite some credit here. His mask is cool and his theme is good. Not to mention he bodies sonic a lot of times and he almost killed him and he creates a literal freaking sun just to try to surpass everyone like Mephiles did. Yeah I can’t deny that’s impressive. And the cutscenes had a lot of missed potential. That’s a most of the game that’s bad. Where forces has a lot of bad things that makes people hate it compared to generations where only 1 thing is mid and in lost world where only a couple things are bad I think generations and lost world takes it.

Ok, but in Sonic 3- Tails has his a literal FLICKY ARMY OF DEATH. Sure, you need to have all the Chaos Emeralds but still, it's a major upgrade from being a sidekick back in Sonic 2.

1. While yes, Tails is a genius, he is also only about 9 or 10.
2. At this point in the story, everyone including Tails thought that Sonic was captured or dead. If i was Tails, and i heard that my role model/big brother/the person that bascially raised me was now gone, and there was no way to get him back, i know i wouldnt be in the best of mental states.
And finally 3. Eggman had been in control of the entire world for 6 months if i remember correctly. I dont care how smart or mature someone is, living everyday in fear of being captured or killed will definitely screw with your head, especially when you're a young kid.
Basically my point is that yes, while Tails did defeat Chaos before, that was when he had the others to help support him, as well as the fact that he was prepared and in an at least decemt mental state. Is it really that big of a deal that a traumitized kid gets terrified and calls out for the one person who has always had his back?
edit: and i dont wanna hear anything about the "they dont have canon ages anymore" thing. when forces came out they still did, and even now, these characters are still children and teenagers fighting a war again an insane scientist and a jackel that can warp reality in seconds.

This. Also, I don’t like how people get upset that Tails didn’t fight Infinite when he was first introduced. Tails doesn’t know who or what Infinite even is. I don’t know about anyone else, but if I were in Tails’ shoes, I also wouldn’t fight Infinite if I didn’t know a thing about him. And before anyone brings up the fact that Sonic fought Infinite without knowledge about him, that’s just part of Sonic’s personality. He’s cocky and willing to take on any challenge that doesn’t involve swimming. That’s just my take on it, at least.
Quick Edit: I will say that I do think he was done kinda dirty in Forces, just not to the extent that other people do. I kinda wish he was playable instead of Classic Sonic, or at the very least was a fourth playable character, but that doesn’t make me think Tails was “ruined” by Forces.
Also (I know I’m rambling, I’m sorry), to add to the Chaos point, in the cutscene where Sonic was getting beat up, Chaos 0 held Sonic’s fist in place and assisted in Sonic “dying.” Tails being frightened by someone who (as far as he knows) defeated/killed his best friend is pretty logical.
