    I mean, obviously - anyone with a brain knew the Arri Alexa was 100x better than a smartphone, but seeing the side-by-side, default-profile comparisons was really cool. Thanks for sharing!

      Everyone compares camera tech all the time but what non-pros don't understand is it's the glass in front of the sensor that really makes the big difference. I own and use both - and a top-end Sony rig. An expensive camera needs wildly expensive lenses to really shine. An iPhone with a $300 aspheric/wide angle adapter will give you extraordinarily good shots with decent lighting. The big camera's primes are far more expensive than the camera itself and for shooting sports on the Sony, a decent 80-100x box zoom lens will set you back at least $200,000. It's always the best camera is the one you have on you, the moment you need it. These days it's often a phone.

      +alex.luxem. That's honestly a great idea..... $200k Lamborghini vs $12k sport motorcycle.... which one is faster..... I'd watch that....

    • @RagicalPlays
      @RagicalPlays 7 лет назад +16

      Easy, acceleration the bike would win. In terms of racing it across a bendy track, the car would leave the bike in the dust in the cornering alone, while the bike could catch up on the straights. Basically what it comes down to is how bendy is your track -> car+bendy vs straights+bike, so to speak

    because most people doesn't understand professional camera features, they only think about :
    1. Megapixel
    2. Video recording resolution
    like for example, Canon EOS C700, cost more than 28K (camera alone not include any accessories) but people mocking it "meh... it's only 8 megapixels while my phone is 20 megapixels booo...hooo.... it's only support HD 1080p recording while my phone support 4K 60 fps booo....hooo....) but it's night vs day when you compared the video quality.
    that's why many cheap smartphone like Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and other always advertise their "superb quality 40 Megapixels camera for selfie !" compare to Samsung that the flagship phone alone like S9+ or Note 8 is only 16 Megapixel camera, but the photo and video quality are superior than those "40 Megapixels" cheap smartphones

      I 100% agree.
      Even big RUclipsrs like misterwhosthebos say that phone is better because it has more megapixels.
      It really makes me cringe every time he says that.
      Sensor size and lens quality are WAAAAAAAY more important than the amount of megapixels.
      I don’t know a lot about sensors but does a 1 inch sensor with 108 megapixels look worse than a another 1 inch sensor with 16 megapixels (the reason I ask that is because the pixels of the 108 megapixel sensor are smaller (because there are more in the same area) so they capture less light)

    Love this breakdown! And thank you for addressing the 4K myth. Resolution is the easiest thing to understand which is why it's often the first thing people compare, but by golly, there are so many other factors! Dynamic range and optics are HUGE as you so perfectly demonstrated. So this was great. Very entertaining too :)

  • @PetrosofSparta
    @PetrosofSparta 5 лет назад +1

    This is actually a great example. I always try to give people, especially beginners the idea that the camera doesn't really matter (I personally think lenses are much, much more important than the camera itself). Of course the camera matters, that's pretty obvious but I try to tell beginners the opposite that what's really important is your skill with the camera. Example, I'm sure you could shoot a better version of the same script with an iPhone than I can with my Sony A6500, and I'm no slouch with a camera but it's about learning the craft.
    All that said this is an excellent video that really does sum up the ultimate differences, once you have the craft down. Far too many people expect their skill to become better because they have a better camera.

My wife and I were just discussing that photography is becoming a lost art because (IMO) we have become inundated with lower quality pics and vids and we're starting to take high quality creations for granted. I am not a good photographer in any sense but I greatly appreciate the skill and equipment it requires to make quality creations.

  • @willemhdx
    @willemhdx 7 лет назад

    I must say, as a cinematographer, the iPhone is surprisingly good! The Alexa is a great camera but keep in mind it can't shoot 4K as it is not a 4K sensor. They claim 2.8k, but this iis only true if you are shooting using the entire 4:3 sensor which requires anamorphic lenses for a widescreen end product. Their 4K recording is upscaled from 2.8k.
    The Sony F55 is a whole other story! Real 4K and recorded in 16bit linear. I think that the Alexa is outdated and no one wants to admit it. In modern 4k cinemas movies shot on the Alexa are looking outdated. The Alexa's version of RAW is also not a linear RAW and not 16bit. Have a go, you will be blown away!
    Thanks for your effort in producing this piece.
    Kind regards
    Willem

    Excellent video! This demonstrates very well why the whole iPhone filmmaking trend is just silly.
    I'd like to see the Arri Alexa put up against a Panasonic G7. The iPhone has a tiny sensor and is doomed to look poor in comparison to even a marginally good camera. I've shot video on the G7 indoors with just the kit lens that looks just as good to me as what I'm seeing from the Alexa here.
    Another thing: 4K matters for cheap gear because a 4:2:0 4K workflow downscaled to 4:2:0 1080p at the end effectively has an intermediate format of 4:4:4 which is why downscaled 4K looks so much better than native 1080p from non-pro cameras. Even $4000 pro 1080p camcorders don't record 4:4:4 video. Working with 4:2:0 1080p source clips means you're starting out with a seriously damaged image and it'll look like exactly what it is.

    • @cahan7033
      @cahan7033 7 лет назад +2

      Jody Bruchon The iPhone film making trend is silly because it isn't as good as an $80K+ camera? The iPhone 7 is around $600 and I personally preferred the iPhone 7 in some scenarios like on the beach because of its vibrant colours however the other camera was clearly better with the greater sharpness and a less grainy look especially in low lighting. The iPhone 7 still has a fantastic camera that is much better value and still holds up very well to this 80K camera so yes I think the iPhone film making trend is understandable

    Your actually shooting 1080p 60fps. You could change it by going to Settings > Photos and Camera > Scroll down till you see "Record Video". Press that. In iPhone 7, change it to 4K 30fps. In iPhone 8 or 10, change it to 4k 60fps. I hope this helped you. :)

    id say one of the most important factors with camera quality would be the video bit rate. for example if you use an iPhone camera in the woods you'd see bits bunching up and it looks sort of dirty and distorted in some parts but on an Alexa you can see the outline of almost every single leaf in the shot. a large sensor with a high bit-rate, high res, high data image is really what most of the money is going on in my opinion

  • @mattm1982
    @mattm1982 7 лет назад +18

    Can someone explain how resolution isn't everything? It seems like if there are more pixels the image should automatically look better/sharper.

    • @PotatoJet
      @PotatoJet  7 лет назад +72

      I think the easiest way to put it is that resolution is like the size of a painting. It matters but what's more important is how much time/effort/type of brush/type of paint/etc. Similar with video, technically I can render out an 8k video that's 10 minutes long, and encode it out to a few MB. But that would be like buying a giant canvas, and giving an artist a pencil and 1 minute to complete it. That's an extreme example but companies are putting out high res dimensions, but not the proper optics, codec, data rate, color space, etc to go with it. But they can technically claim 4k in bright yellow letters on the box and since it's the easiest concept to understand, it's what the general public looks at.
      But really, even HD has a ton of pixels so when you look at a frame and think it looks good, yes you are looking at size, but you're also seeing many more aspects that make it look sharp. Hope that makes sense.

      Potato Jet that is the best way I have ever heard anyone explain it

    • @YeeeeeeAaaaaahah
      @YeeeeeeAaaaaahah 7 лет назад +4

      Because the composition of the pixels matters more than the amount themselves. The iPhone can film 8k for all it wants, the colors are still going to be flat and it’s still going to lack depth of field

    • @Sethgolas
      @Sethgolas 7 лет назад +2

      Technically digital resolution is only one component of overall resolution, which is the smallest element of detail that can be resolved in the image. Resolution is fundamentally limited by noise, and pixels are one kind of noise called quantization noise. You can reduce this by adding more pixels. However, there are a number of other types of noise in the image, which cause the pixels to record an inaccurate value. This is caused, by among other things, the sensor not getting enough light, and the image compression throwing away information in order to save space and speed up image capture.
      Another thing that people forget, is that cameras have two kinds of resolution. There is spatial resolution, but there is also color resolution. Color resolution is just the number of different values that can be used to describe the color of a pixel. This information is also very important to making the final image look good, and while iPhone has more pixels, it has a much rougher description of what color each pixel is.

    • @ResidentO
      @ResidentO 7 лет назад +5

      Christopher Flanagan it feels very weird to me.
      I mean it's obvious pro camera would be better, but iPhone footage looks way too grainy, like it was shot with a 300% digital zoom.
      When you check out cinematic videos on RUclips filmed on iPhone or any recent smartphone really, it doesn't look even remotely that bad

    • @ggh_-ts6pn
      @ggh_-ts6pn 7 лет назад +1

      because of lightning. When shoots on good lighting, smartphone videos don't look that bad. Here in this video, he compared both under lackluster lighting especially the indoor music scene. Of course, you can just use proper lighting equipment to make the iPhone pics look much better, but it's not the point of this video because he wants to show the capability of professional cinema camera. Even with poor lighting that makes iPhone videos look like shit, Alexa videos looks super good.
      And really, it's all physics. iPhone (or any smartphone) sensor size is too small to compete with high-end cameras.

      @WyattFredaCowie 7 лет назад +2

      Michael J Yeah that’s straight up not true. They might look good to you if you’ve never seen anything better, but I can guarantee you the iPhone 7 doesn’t shoot “amazing” video. It’s good enough for Facebook, sure, but relative to almost anything else it doesn’t even come close to good, much less amazing. The D3100 shoots better video.

  • @BradsSpace2
    @BradsSpace2 7 лет назад

    Just going to mention, image quality isn't the only reason to shoot on a cinema camera. They offer a lot of features you don't get with say a DSLR and obviously, not with a phone. They are much quicker to use, with settings mapped to buttons and not hidden in menus. They are designed to be able to be operated by more than one person at once. They have better video outputs for monitors such as SDI and they are very customisable since you can add the parts you need to your rig. There are loads more, and a lot of it doesn't matter if you're just making youtube videos, but if you're on a big movie set then you really can't work without them.

    4K isn't overrated, it was ahead of its time, and it's been poorly deployed due to the multiple facets of technology infrastructure that need to be working to make it cost-effective for producers and consumers. As a capture format it's fantastic. The S9+ 4K 60p is amazing. As an intermediate, its tricky. Capture in 4K, work in 2K. Your 1080p distribution will look way better thanks to the 4K capture. Sure, capturing on a tiny sony IMX 277 8-bit sensor used in iPhones vs Arri's full frame 12-bit makes a good case for shooting 2K instead of 4K, but it doesn't really mean 4K is overrated. That's really kind of a moot point in the topic IMO.

    This is great, thank you. I am playing with the log profile in filmic pro on the I phone 7 plus and getting great results. Shooting into the sun and bright light, I get much more of the subject in front of the light than with the original settings. Less noise in low light too, although there is some there. Not sure if you used filmic pro, but I think it would make for an interesting comparison. Again, thanks for doing this...much appreciated.
