I LOVE this. I saw a live show with Jon English and Simon Gallaher (but the rest of the cast is different) and loved that to. I was raised on this version. I can't help but agree that Jon is fantastic. Toni is good, not great, but still good. Siman is great and I personally think that he is the best Frederic that there is. Jon is definatally the BEST PIRATE KING EVER!!!!!!!!!!! Ok finished ranting now. =)
@jane90186 Or good hearing - you can see Jon smile right after he mumbles something very much like Oh Shit. as Jon walks off and has him off screen. Something is mumbled that several people have picked to be that not just me.
Can anyone post the song that comes after this? I can't find it! But it's one of my fave songs in the play. It's called "My eyes are fully open" with these 3 in it.
Ah that's quite interesting. You see I'm a musical theatre and straight theatre actor (although I would like to try panto some day). In fact I have recently been cast as Frederic. The fourth wall is there for a reason. Jon breaks in constantly. The illusion must be kept to some degree - that's the magic of theatre. In panto (although you are clearly better informered there than I), the breaking of the wall is common if not necessary. Ah I'm about to go over character limit... :P
@kirafaye I have listened again and can pick up a faint murmer, but it could be anything, why would Simon say 'Oh shit' at that point ? I guess we'll nver know the truth of it.
I realise it's not a ponto, it's just what I am used to. And you are right that Rex and Kevin have a strong on-stage chemistry. Panto is fun and I would like to try musical and straight theatre as well. Jon mainly followed the script and origionally the script had a little breaking of the forth wall and that's why they put it in this one (although more so in this). I do understand your point with Simon's voice. I personally don't mind but know that it can get annoying........ character limit =)
I agree to the "no aguement" thing but would like to say that: I personally think that breaking the forth wall is good. As I do pantomimes, I am used to it and like it being done. Also because of the panto's, I am used to people not being what they act as. E.g. wrong age, opposite gender ect... This is just my thoughts though and I respect your thoughts. If you have a dislike of these factors then that is fine with me..... Each to there own =)
I'm not a fan of this ruth, I love their pirate king. But not sure about this song, it's allot slower then usual. Again LOVE this pirate king, second favorite, but the funniest for sure.
sorry, but that song actually isnt in this musical. its from another gilbert & sulivan musical, Ruddigore, and its words were changed to fit pirates of penzance. i like that song too.
Last years panto had a girl like that. I totally understand your point in keeping the forth wall but there is also times when having it broken is good. In the origional script (we had to study it in drama class once) they broke it. They also tried to combine many aspects of acting including panto, musical, mime and surround sound meaning they tried to involve the audience while avoiding the forth wall. Just stating facts here. I'm not trying to sound mean or like I want to argue or anything =)
You see, my argument would be that Pirates is not by any means a panto. It is a comic opera. Things like saying "wait, we haven't finished yet" is a panto tool. I find it to be out of place here. As for Simon... well, do you know when you just inexplicable dislike someone's voice even though they can clearly sing? Well that's what I have with him. They are both fine actors, I just believe that Rex and Kevin are in a league of their own and have an on-stage chemistry that these two cannot match!
Not trying to start an argument; just a good-spirited disagreement: I couln't agree. Simon looks too old and lacks the pleasant tone that Rex Smith has to his voice. Jon breaks the fourth wall far too often which leads to a disbelief that he is the character he is meant to be. I think Kevin Kline and Rex Smith are the ultimate duo.

I LOVE Paradox!!! it has such a catchy tune!!
Grat fun and great performances. Love Simon's Frederick. Even when the sword nearly does him a serious injury!
Good impersonation of Ruth on the last line by Jon English. I love this production it is so hilarious.
I was searching stuff about the serenity pot but it autocorrected to this, very pretty song
She is Toni Lamond.
She has been in theatre and television since the early 1950's.
Helen Reddy ("I Am Woman," "Delta Dawn" etc.)is her sister.
Me too, I was raised on this whole show set too! Jon English really made an impression on me!
I miss his purple pants.
@@stitchesandstaples he is the reason I wear purple everyday ^_^
Gilbert & Sullivan are geniuses
last three seconds of this video were the greatest ever
lmao
absolutly brilliant
I just got casted as The Pirate King in this production today
I'm soo excited!
So sad to hear about Jon English!! RIP
(Also, this is my favorite song From "The Pirates of Penzance")
love this version! im playing the pirate king at the moment!! :D
I like the movie, but I have to say, this is just as great!! I would so love to see this in Broadway or something. :3

Thumbs up if you're watching on February 29.
The faint murmur is at this point is coming from the audience. Probably two people whispering to each other in the front row.
It also means former, which is probably what he meant when he said (sang) that.

Ikr I was walking around school saying, "Frederic's birthday is in two months! He's turning six!"
@kirafaye I have listened again and can pick up a faint murmer, but it could be anything, why would Simon say 'Oh shit' at that point ? I guess we'll nver know the truth of it.
Oh, and Frederic got so angry he disliked this five times.
I just realized...Frederic's birthday is this year lol. ;)
@punkyprincessful Well that must have been some school production!!?

Ruth Was good 'your sense of duty"
PK Said "Your late commander" Late means dead
Don't put it on that footing!

Hmmm I seem to recall in my school's performance of this play, this song was sung a bit faster....
That sounds much more likely.
sorry, but that song actually isnt in this musical. its from another gilbert & sulivan musical, Ruddigore, and its words were changed to fit pirates of penzance. i like that song too.
Is it even possible to pirate till you're 80? I'd think if you made it to 40 at the oldest you would need to retire, seems to be a young mans game.

why can't i comment on any of these?
At 4:06 Simon says 'Oh Shit'
@kirafaye I don't know what you are listening to, or do you have an overdeveloped imagination.
veddy in-ter-est-eeng....

i know she doesn't sound good when she does that..
Then don't Watch
Yeah so am i NOT, I HATE THESE CRAPPY SPAM THINGS
my school did it better .. just saying
That's probably just because it didn't have Jon English and he makes it funny
