I'm sure you've heard this before, but your voice has an ASMR/Bob Ross kind of effect on me. And I love how you appreciate the tiny joys and give words to it
Birds are a huge part of my life too I am watching this with a macaw on my knee and I see an amazon out of the corner of my eye. I have had parrots most of my life so this should be a fun carve.
Your mothers marker is a beauty mr linker. Thank you for bringing us a comfort bird adventure. I like to carve them and leave them behind to bring others joy. Or place them at markers as a memory and a reminder I have been there instead of coins.
I carved a bird when I was about 17 years old, the only characters I had until last winter after learning from you. I was 71 last winter and enjoying your teaching I'm busy with chores and garden but I want to learn more in late fall Thanks
Hi Doug, I'm going off topic a little but the very first whittle I did was your 5-minute Wizard, which ended up being a bit different to your design. It is done in 360 degree 3" x 1" design with little feet and all. All my friends love it and I never leave home without it, I treat it like a comfort bird (talking to it and handling it when thinking). I call it a 'pocket person' and have made other 'pocket people' to give to friends - gnomes and tree spirits especially. Here in UK, a rabbits foot is carried (usually on a chain) as a good luck charm and that is how I treat these little 2x1 and 3x1 pocket people. Yes, I'm probably a bit nuts but I love these little things in life.
If it wasn't midnight here I would have started one by now. They look fantastic....Think I better wait till the morning 🤠 😁🏴 Thanks again for sharing.
Doug I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. Hard to believe you could think of us in the middle of this sad time. I just want to say thank you!!! I'll be praying for you and your family. 💔
Glad you are back in the game. Hope you enjoyed your summer. I really enjoy your videos including your hiking and camping trips. You are a great teacher.
I was using the earlier comfort bird tutorial to learn whittling. Was dismayed when I couldn't find it today. Happy to know it was replaced with this one!
Since you last video, I"ve been thinkin' on a Little Birdie, Lo & Behold ... you show up with one just for me. Thanks so much. You have been missed, as you see in the commets, and by me as well. Thanks for this from a very beginner chipper.
Doug, I’m not a carver but sometimes I watch just to hear your story. We loved your camping videos and miss them so much. Last I saw you were going to do something on your folk’s homestead? Something must have happened….
Je viens de commencer ce hobby à 50 ans pour évacuer le stress. Merci pour toutes ces explications et cette série des 1x1..I'll do the comfort bird today 😊
Great video. Touching story. I really appreciate the way you do this carving without needing to cut out a blank. Thank you, thank you. Keep up the great work you do!
Doug I just got a set of tools and will make this my first project. I KNOW it will be pleasing and bring comfort to my girlfriend. Thanks for the tutorial/video.
Doug glade your ok I absolutely love your content always relaxing and inspiring I suppose the comfort birds was old school fidget spinner I use a rosary of course its wooden with padre pio on it but a comfort bird I has to try normally im a branch carving fox but basswood rubbing off on me lol thankies for sharing but I like yo see how to carve a moral mushroom you showed them but not how to carve them 🍻👍🦊🐾🇮🇹🇺🇲
@@dougLinker cool can't wait I carve normal mushrooms with wood spirits in base looking for a new challenge a basic tool for carving has gouges and chisel and hook knife it's a flexcut whittling jack schrade makes one but I found steel too soft can be done but needs stropping more and edge needs te profiling further back to make it work good not good like flexcut knives but ok
I have a couple of comfort bird blank shapes at the Artsy in Woods show. I have purchased the Carving Comfort Animals. In the Carving Comfort Animals book are directions for the Comfort Bird. Also, the Comfort Bird was a feature in one of the issues of Woodcarving Illustrated magazine. I've purchased the book Carving Comfort Animals. I've renewed my subscription for Woodcarving Illustrated magazine. I've kept every copy of the Woodcarving Illustrated magazine since I've subscribed to it. I couldn't tell you how many Woodcarving Illustrated magazines I have!!
What a great guy, love all your videos and will re watch them every once in a while as i carve, you introduced me to wood carving and i wish that you will continue to be happy carving, don´t worry about content creating as much as enjoying your craft. Cheers
I’m loving your 1 X 1 series. I really like this comfort bird. Was wondering if you will be doing a Santa for this series? Would be great to give or hang on the Christmas tree. Thanks.
Lovely thanks Doug, Flexcut Knives are good as well ive always used them they feel good in your hand , tried to buy a Hlvie knife but said not in stock
I like their detail knife, customized the handle by sanding off the varnish and ebonizing the ashwood, then coated it in raw linseed to seal it. It looks great!
Would you be able to do a video on how to carve soapstone? I like the look of the bird and know nothing about carving that medium. I could look up how to do it, but you have a way of keeping things simple and understandable for beginners. Thanks!
Great little bird. I’m working on some cardinals myself. Do you happen to have a tutorial for a wood spirit on a walking stick. Someone gave a couple of sticks I can practice on. Thanks for giving us the great videos.
Hi Doug - great to see yet another wonderful video from you! Of all the carving videos available, I always enjoy your style, content and delivery! On a side note - where do you get your pencils? I can find them online, but they are not cheap!
I'm not telling anyone to buy it if you don't have it, but a grided place mat or cutting board might be a faster or beneficial way to mark measurements. They're very multipurpose.
About bloody time too Dougie!! I was seriously getting worried about your silence!! Glad you are back.

A comfort to rub on, a comfort to carve and your videos are a comfort to watch.
Thank you very much.
Missed you Doug! Glad you're back as I've really enjoyed the 1x1 series. I'll begin working on my flock to supplement my parliament of owls.

Hello, what tree do you use for this birds? what tree is better to use?

Thx Sir Doug ✌🏻. So relaxing to watch. Plz say Hello to your delightful wife for me.
Can this be done on a 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 2 1/2 instead of a 1 x 1 x 2 1/2
Doug which GoPro do you have.
It’s a dgi action cam
I think I’ll carve a bird🕊️

You’ve seen one on my desk in videos past but hard to carry in pocket lol
Hello again Doug. Are you no longer affiliated with Wood Carver's Magazine?
I bought a beavercraft set and your knife cuts through your wood so easily, but this beavercraft set is impossible to cut
Your 1x1 series is catching on...목각인형-어린요정 조각하기 Woodcarving-Carve a child gnome...check him out.
Ummm this is a lay-up....
Looks like you're not much for canoeing, camping, or fishing anymore. Guess you don't care for it anymore. Have you lost following? Good Luck Doug!
