  • Ehud Olmert, who was Israeli prime minister between 2006 and 2009, has spoken about who he thought was to blame for the security failings ahead of the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October.
Hamas has been proscribed as a terrorist organisation by the UK and other governments.
During his time in office, Mr Olmert wanted a two-state solution, offering to withdraw from most of the occupied West Bank.
His deal ended when he was forced from office in a corruption scandal.
BBC Newsnight’s Joe Inwood spoke to him about the Israel-Gaza conflict.

    The man makes sense.

  • @shaharfetman9275

As an Israeli I agree with everything Olmert said

  • @JM-bg1it

Before people eulogize this guy, they need to recall that he gave the order for Operation Cast Lead, the 2008/9 attack on Gaza that killed well over a thousand people.

  • @MusingsFromTheJohn00

I believe Netanyahu knew Hamas was going to attack and helped manipulate the attack to happen because he needed it to wage the major war he wanted, to achieve the goals he wanted, which he has clearly and strongly expressed prior to the attack.

  • @franceslynch8815

Why are you both ignoring the settlers putting the impoverished Palestinians out of their homes and land with Isreali military support that led to Oct' 5th.

  • @olorin4317

Mr. Olmert has some of the right ideas. They have to learn to live in peace or be doomed to repeat this senseless cycle of insanity.

What an amazing interview. He has explained with great clarity the reason for the colossal failure of IDF in securing the Gaza border -- as has already been pointed out by several former IDF soldiers who were working on this task when serving in the military. He has also acknowledged that some in Israel will not accept removing the settlers from the West Bank, but that Israel must do it in order to enable the two state solution.

  • @Balla1527

Speaking sense. This man doesn't appear to be a psychopath as most Israeli spokes ppl undoubtedly are today.

  • @jonathaneffemey944

Spoken like a true leader who understands people....

  • @titteryenot4524

If my next-door neighbour repressed and oppressed me for 75 years, just because they could (ie. massive military support from elsewhere), then did you honestly think that at some point I wouldn’t punch back? Last time I checked, in a boxing match,

  • @connortilson7141

    A very wise man 🙏

  • @NguyenDinhTrinh1974

    "security failings"?

  • @coachdrak5831

    This guy is speaking facts

  • @brucefriedman1

Hi Ehud. Nice to see you (again)! It is a fact Netanyahu plays politics to appease his base, i.e., the settlers, just like Arik did. Lost lives is of no consequence to this sort of politicians, Jewish or otherwise.
