- A visual investigation in collaboration with @WashingtonPost provides a detailed examination of how Hamas was able to breach Israel’s vaunted security barrier on Oct. 7, 2023, and carry out its attack.
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: www.pbs.org/donate
This special collaboration stems from a reconstruction by The Post, with additional on-the-ground reporting and riveting interviews that present a remarkable picture of how, as The Post reporters show, Hamas was planning the attack in plain sight, and Israel was blind to its own vulnerabilities.
“Failure at the Fence” is a FRONTLINE Production with Schonder Productions in association with The Washington Post. Written, produced and directed by Gabrielle Schonder. The correspondent is Jon Swaine. Reported by Jon Swaine and Joyce Sohyun Lee. The senior producer is Frank Koughan. The executive editor of The Washington Post is Sally Buzbee. Oct. 7 proved that technology for guarding borders can never be a replacement for personnel on the ground.
No, it didn't. What it proved is that technology has to be backed up by robust rules of engagement. Saying your helicopters can't fire at armed men coming through the holes they've blasted in a fence unless you have confirming ground observers to sign off on a kinetic response is not that.
To me the 7th of October mainly seems to prove that the world left Gaza to fend for itself by forsaking them for over 70 years.
According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, aid to Palestinians totaled over $40 billion between 1994 and 2020. No other country has anything like the UNRWA, which has enabled the ridiculous concept of passing down refugee status across generations to settled Palestinians and calling entire 50 year old neighbourhoods refugee camps. Hamas leaders are billionaires and have zero regard for Gazan lives.@@SungazerDNB
@MsBhappy you could give a billion dollars to inmates in a prison, nothing they could buy will change that they are fundamentally trapped and oppressed. Hamas and their acts are unforgivable, but it is not hard to see why it happened and how they were able to recruit so many Palestinians to their cause
@@maxanderson8872 The claim MsBhappy refuted was that the Gazans were "forsaken", not that Arab desire to kill Jews are incomprehensible. Nor is a Jewish impulse to exterminate Gaza incomprehensible. What's your point?

Bullshit. Total biased reporting. Whenever any outlet says "Hamas fighters" instead of terrorists you know they are anti Israel. There was NOT A SINGLE mention of the appalling atrocities committed by Hamas.. it was watered down to "killed" and "kidnapped". No mention of rapes, buthering children, burning people alive. Then they have the audacity to put most of the blame on the IDF for not having a good enough fence defence.
On the contrary, FRONTLINE'S bit on the Persian Gulf War is loaded with distortions, not the least of which is their conclusion that the US won the conflict. We lost badly, thus necessitating the need for another war on Iraq.
The technology of the fence was good, but no effort was made to protect against a major multi facetted attack on it.
The fence was useless, adding the fact that, unfortunately, there was not enough (so little) man power in the most dangerous border in the world, is even more mind blowing. 💔
It was a luxury of modern times that you could expect raiders on villages and cities to not come after a settlement with no wall. The national wall matters, but every settlement in the world now needs at least a palisade if not a construction in concentric walls like a medieval castle. It was not an accident that the building of castles was necessary, the only thing that offered protection against viking raids was a stone wall.
I appreciate this documentary very much. Great work!
This will never happen in Israel again!Just makes them stronger!

truth is on October 7th Benjamin Netanyahu recalled the army for the preparations of demolishing masjid al aqsa mosque to welcome the antichrist but failed ..
I lived in Nachal Oz for 4 years. It was obvious to me the fence was more theater than an effective barrier. A single regiment of good infantry at 4 or 5 bases on the border would have stopped the attack in one hour. The IDF has some of the best infantry in the world. None of the front line bases were ever properly maned, built for defense or guarded. One has to go all the way back to the French army of 1940 to equal the incompetence shown by the IDF on October 7th. No effective forces at the border and a 18 hour response time in a tiny country means lack of intellect and realistic planning at the top. The IDF should be able to put an armored division anywhere in the country in an hour an a half. You only need two divisions on alert to do that. That seem like a minimum when you have hostile armies on 3 borders.
Israeli infantry is actually very weak, as has been observed. Their tech is strong but the people are very weak.

What provokes these ungodly attacks? Maybe the oppression of humans for decades, walling people in, depriving them of basic human rights and necessities, of dignity, of clean and ample water, of voting rights, of freedom, of prosperity, of hope , and mainly depriving them of possibility brings this on. Who else on earth needs this kind of "protection" from their neighbors and why? Israel provokes these attacks every day of the Gazan's lives. What goes around comes around. This will NEVER END until Gazans are granted equal and human rights. And this is not a "war". This is a slaughter of civilians, 70% of whom are women and children , using unguided bombs and eventual starvation and infectious diseases - all violations of the Geneva convention.
They showed the Israeli justification for this "war" and barely glanced at the reality of what's going on in Gaza. If you're upset by the killing and tragedy presented in this video, how do you react to it's magnification by many thousands?
The heartless slaughter in Gaza is genocide, carried out with unimaginable ferocity and cruelty. Denying food and water to two million people is, all by itself, a war crime, a deliberate attempt at mass murder calling for immediate rescue and the arrest of those responsible. But Israel is doing far more, far worse and, yet, The United States is shielding Israel from the consequences it has earned. Instead, it helps Israel paint itself as the victim. That is the reality.
I never knew any of this. I knew about the wall but never knew they have to go to this of a sophisticated extent to keep these people back. An yet, yet it still failed. Unbelievable. An they will either try or do it again. I seen the tunnel video. The engineer involved. They were all in on it.

I'm confused. When they talk about snipers coming in the night and going to the roof to attack other positions, the IDF does the exact same thing to the Palestinians in the West Bank? Of course, the IDF hasn't taken that many lives in a single day, but every day regular civilians in the West Bank are shot by the IDF or settlers in the tens. Far more than 10,000 Palestinians had been killed that way since the occupation of the West Bank from the 70s. Why aren't showing the other side too? What about those killed in the Nakba? I would suggest watching also the documentary "Tantura" (that is available in vary streaming services). IDF who served in 1948 tell the stories of what they did then to the Palestinian population - some of them regretting their actions while others brushed it off as "something that happened and you just move on"

One thing that seems really weak about all these remote controlled guns is how much of an obvious target they are. They're static, their position is easy to see and target from anywhere, and the enemy knows exactly where these all these guns are months in advance. Seems pretty naive to expect they wouldn't be taken out early in a fight.
The problem was, they never thought that they would get attacked like that.

The fence has the same limitations of any fixed position or wall. Through out the world wars and other conflicts it has been proven time and again that these can not stop a motivated and well armed force. This is why mobile armor or overwhelming infantry and artillery are the only real solutions to stopping an advance. If the enemy breaches one tiny spot they flow through that spot and in moments the wall becomes the property of the enemy. If you have mobility your force can quickly converge on any attack point or if necessary absorb the attack and give some ground while still maintaining the barrier.
Major strategic mistake to think that an unmanned wall can stop a fighting force. It never has and it never will.
It was meant to be a prison wall. It's not a defensive wall.
@@gatolibero8329 Unguarded prison, which is the same thing if you think about it.
It wasn't meant to keep out a whole army. It was meant to stop a few terrorists from trying to breach and harm the kibbutzim on the border. Manned or unmanned, believe me as long as there is injustice, as long as the Palestinians are evicted from their home by the settlers with the support of the Israeli police and army, as long as the Palestinians are deprived of their rights as human beings, as long as children see their fathers killed, as long as mothers see their children killed, there will be a reaction. 13:34 Former Israeli IDF interviewee claims IDF ROE on the wall was 'do not fire, unless fired upon' This is a lie. With thousands of independently verified examples of IDF shooting Gazan unarmed civilians from Israel without provocation, including many children.
Unfortunately, the wall was a latter day Bar Lev line , both failed the unforeseen test . A false sense of security can be more dangerous than none
My understanding of the Bar Lev line is that it was a military installation. The wall was also staffed by members of the IDF. At 16:51 Dr. Dany Tirza stated that the wall was not meant to sustain a military attack. Therefore, the wall's purpose was to detain a stateless population indefinitely. Maybe it's time to admit that Zionism is wrong. It's too bad Israel is a failed apartheid state and it's too bad the IDF is committing an ethnic cleansing in 2023.

They broke 2 cardinal rules: 1, they got complacent, 2 they underestimated the enemy. Someone asked me which side are you on. They seem kinda disappointed when I said 'peace. I'm on the side of peace'.
Did they underestimate? Do you think they welcomed the attack as an excuse to carpet bomb gaza?
Oh they underestimated alright...Whilst the mighty IDF were either fast asleep in their barracks or on festive holiday leave, a few determined men with construction machines, Toyota pickups & mopeds successfully breached the walls & ran riot...
that's a nice thought. Do you believe in unicorns and rainbows too?
Peace can never be a side, it takes both sides ongoing commitment. Peace can never come with Hamas leading Gaza. It also can not come with Netanyahu in power. Thankfully Israel is a democracy whereas Hamas imprisons peace activists for even talking to Israelis (2020 news).

This interview is on Middle East Eye: An Israeli mother and daughter, who were recently held hostage and subsequently released from captivity in Gaza, have shared their experiences, detailing their surprise at the treatment they witnessed.
In an interview aired on Israel’s Channel 12, they reported that their captors allowed them to exercise, taught new games to the children, including card games, and treated women with respect. Ajam, the daughter, described that she was given the nickname 'Salsabeel'. They added that one of the captors used a hand towel to avoid direct contact during a game of arm-wrestling.
Intelligent people know that Israel did it
Agree. Did you see when Elon was there this is what he was taking photos of.
There is even an account of an Israeli talking about the IDF using a tank on their compound.
Wow sounds like they were treated exquisitely. Makes you wonder why did they even agree to be released 🤔 They should have stayed there with their captors, new best friends.
So those two were lucky - IF they were telling the truth. And others had to sit still without moving in a dark room for more than 50 days. They also said that they don’t want to say anything bad about Hamas as they don’t want to risk anything bad happening to the remaining hostages.
Exactly!! Was hamas coming to attack with tanks and helicopter apaches???
Frontline took a HUGE nosedive at some point in the past ten years. I've recently seen 2 outstanding Frontline DOCS. Please continue this trajectory in the excellence we all come to love and respect from PBS! Our Libraries, PBS, NPR must continue. They are needed. Thank you!

They are not ultra biased haha. Have you seen their Afghanistan stuff? They are brutal to Obama and the rest. Jan 6th was fully recorded. It's not up for debate. Always a reminder that technology won't always be reliable..
You have to feel for these individuals. You also can not shake the thought that their government left them exposed. Nakba is as fake as Palestine.
Nakba in one line . Arabs promising liberation asked villages to evacuate to end up getting smoked. Dumb of you to trust Arabs.
They have one called Netanyahu's War. In hindsight, it explains why he acted like that in the 90's, and it's so he can do what he's doing today. He got the opportunity.
They should make a vid about the ethnic cleansing of 800,000 mirhzi jews from arab vountries
You're right. The woke universities that can't even condemn the genocide of Jews aren't doing a good enough job talking about the nakba. C'mmon.

Anyone find it odd when you know the Palestinian people were there first to see the little area they have, and all the area the Jews have ?
I wonder if PBS thought to interview anyone from any other perspective
you mean interview the rapists....?
I think they asked, but the rapists didn't want to be interviewed
Moral of the story don’t cheat your neighbours and get along with them . Or life will be hell . No matter what
Exactly
if you cage them in they will eventually uncage themselves
What an insane response! The moral of the story is don't imagine you can tolerate terrorists on your borders, especially Islamic terrorists who are supported across the Muslim world.
They're not crying "In the interest of a safe two-state solution" as they rush into "occupied territory - they cry "Allahu Akhbar!" Because this is Islam against the world, as it has been since the 7th century.
You should also show a video of the destruction in gaza. We need both sides of the story
Israel won't permit them.
Hamas controls the media there. Always has.
Yes, the Palestinian perspective was almost entirely lacking in the Frontline report. a typical western media.
Why doesn't any journalists ask if October 7 was planned and allowed to happen by Bibi so that the destruction of Gaza could be justified??
Well, you can't steal indigenous land, violently expel the indigenous population and make them refugees within their own land (for over 50 years) and expect them to not revolt. 🤷🏾♂️ I don't know how hard that is to understand.

This isn't the case.
Really informative. Appreciate the on the ground effort.
The documentary I watched appeared to be heavily biased, presenting a one-sided perspective without considering the experiences of the individuals in Palestine over the past 40 years. It was disheartening to see how Frontline, as a media outlet, displayed such evident partiality throughout the entire documentary. I feel disappointed with the team behind this production for creating content that lacks objectivity and fails to provide a balanced view of the subject matter.
This is so well done. Thank you for showing those of us who are not there.

It’s getting harder to keep feeling sympathy for these people who sense no irony in their grief over slaughtered loved ones, demolished homes, and upturned lives when that and worse is what they have inflicted upon the people of that land for decades. What sympathy there was is quickly dissipating around the world as they slaughter thousands in retaliation, when they support their government to annihilate an entire people so that they can freely steal and occupy the last vestiges of land left to the Palestinians.
This is not a war between sovereign states with established militaries. Crushed, oppressed, dispossessed, abused, and occupied peoples have a right to resist, a right to challenge and to try to remove their occupiers.
Occupiers have no rights.
Would you please expound and explain the Palestinian side of the story? Is it all the broken cease-fires? Or all the thousands of rockets they rain down on innocent civilians?
Or is it that before 2001 there was no prison, they were offered a state time and again and they refused to accept it and live peacefully, continuing suicid bombings in the heart of Israel? Is that the Palestinian side of the story? Or am I missing something here?

It’s a good thing those IDF Apache helicopter pilot interviews were published.
It’s not the news some will accept, but there is obviously a trend. The resistance is growing stronger and more sophisticated each decade. Considering that Hamas has only been around since the late eighties, it’s astonishing. The latest fighting is also creating more support allies around the world. A total misconception.
Even today most of Israel is not populated. In 1948 it was eve less populated. No one owned thr vast majoriof the land. It belonged to whoever was in control of the area. Birts, Ottomans, Romans, Jews etc.
The Palestinian lie has been told too many times. People blindly believe it.
"if I don't steal your house, someone else was going to steal it"
Israel is a nation built on a genocide and an occupation
The tragedy in this story is that Israel spent a billion to build a wall, deprive millions of people from basic human dignity by imprisoning them and choking them in submission. What could they have done differently? A prisoner needs a guard. That guard is also a prisoner to the prisoner.
Genuine question: what could they have done differently? Now that we have seen what happens when there is freedom of movement between Gaza and Israel, what alternative did Israel have other than building a wall to prevent Gazans from entering Israel?
One can't help noticing that many Israelis speak English with an American accent. This, to me, says a great deal.
Yes, it says that a hell of a lot of Jews who were not in the US got killed off in the years 1933-1945. And Hitler wasn't able to kill off the ones who got to the US before those years. And the US and Israel being on friendly terms, there's a lot of travel back and forth. Lastly, if you learned English in the last 50 years, there's a pretty good chance you learned American English from movies, TV, American teachers, etc.

Legal journals have written as follows:
"Applied to the case of Israel, uti possidetis juris would dictate that Israel inherit the boundaries of the Mandate of Palestine as they existed in May, 1948. The doctrine would thus support Israeli claims to any or all of the currently hotly disputed areas of Jerusalem (including East Jerusalem), the West Bank, and even potentially the Gaza Strip."
The fact is that Jews have lived continuously in Israel for well over 3000 years. The claim that the Jews usurped Arab land is simply without basis. Britain's Balfour Declaration of 1917 recognized that both Jews and Arabs had been living in the area in recent years, which led to several attempts to divvy up the land. Every version was accepted by the Jews, every one rejected by the Arabs. And then the Arab states got together to "push Israel into the sea" as they put it, in 1948 and 1967 and 1973, and failed each time. Then Egypt agreed to a peace treaty with Israel in the late 1970s, a major step forward, and other states eventually followed. Not all, of course - the Muslim Brotherhood (Iran, Hamas, al-Qaeda, ISIS, Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah, etc.) still swears that their goal - essentially their only goal - is the elimination of Israel, the elimination of all Jews, and eventually taking over the planet for Islam and installing universal Sharia Law.
One of the sources of confusion is the term "Palestinian", and references to "Palestine". What is now called Israel was called Palestine 100 years ago, but it was called Israel thousands of years ago. When the PLO terrorist group wanted to push the false narrative in the 1960s that the Jews had removed the Arabs from their land, they renamed some Lebanese, Syrians, Egyptians, and Jordanians as "Palestinians", as if they had been in "Palestine" before the Jews pushed them out. It was a claim made up out of whole cloth.
Walid Shoebat, a former Muslim terrorist who at that time lived in the area that became known as the "West Bank," (another invented term) said "how can I go to bed as a Jordanian one day, and wake up the next day as a Palestinian?"
Then-PLO Executive Committee member Zahir Muhsein, in a 1977 interview, said: "The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality there is no difference between Jordanians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for our political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since the Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct ‘Palestinian people,’ to oppose Zionism.”
