Installs are less about changing the character itself and more about the move giving the character added properties/damage to their moves. Any kind of temporary state that changes moves activated by a super move is considered an install, basically.

While I agree Sol is the origin of the term, I feel the mechanic itself comes from the Darkstalkers/Vampire series, specifically the Dark Force mechanic which essentially worked as an universal install for all characters, every character could use a bar of meter to enter this mode which offered them a unique buff (like super armor), resources (additional projectiles or shadows that acted as aditional hits), or even mechanics (like Anakaris dividing himself in two to get low attack anywhere on the screen or Jedah's flight mode), all unique to each character.

I was fully expecting to see Turnabout mentioned here. In UMVC3, Phoenix Wright's entire moveset is designed around his different modes. He starts in Investigation mode, which is incredibly weak, but is the only mode where he can get evidence. He can enter Trial mode at any time, which is significantly better then investigation, but prevents him from getting his evidence. Once he has three pieces of good evidence, if he lands an objection in trial mode, he'll enter Turnabout mode, giving him some of the highest damage numbers in the game alongside better specials and new normals, and access to his level 3

There's three ways to incorporate super transformations in fighting games from what I've discovered.
    1. Install. Basically what was shown in the video.
    2. New Slot. Akin to DBFZ, one can give a super form their own slot to make them active all the time.
    3. Cutscenes. When performing a super, a character can transform during the animation, then turn back to normal once the animation is over. Smash Ultimate loves doing this one.

universal mechanic where every character becomes effectively broken. For example Bullet gets infinite heat state while in Overdrive allowing her to effectively chain as many specials into their followups for insane damage and giving her a HALF SCREEN DASH. Terumi instead can cancel out of supers with other supers making and lets him combo out of them, paired with his ability to gain meter like crazy his cashouts in the right circumstance are game-ending.

      @@BudewFan_ 1. Timed doesn't equal install
      2. It's not objectively better, it trades her defensive options for better offensive options, it's the main reason why she's a "high risk high reward" character in the first place
      3. Also if regular Moroha is an install, what is Goku Moroha? An install over an install? Also Goku Moroha does fit into the "objectively better" category since it's basically just Moroha but with better everything
Also one thing that imo defines it as a stance is the fact that you need to keep changing between normal mode and Moroha mode a lot during the match, which is not something that happens with installs, Goku Moroha is something that happens at most once per round, meanwhile in a single round A.B.A might change between Moroha and regular mode as often as necessary since she has plenty of ways of changing and/or resetting the stance
Or think of Sol's Dragon Install, do you see him going back and forth from the Dragon Install mode and normal mode? Or think of Narmaya's stance in Granblue, you see her changing between Kagura and Genji stance all the time just like A.B.A.s Moroha, the main difference is that she doesn't need to manage her time on one mode specifically because that's not the kind of character she is. Yes both are stance characters, but the properties of the stance are a bit different because it depends on what the devs want with the character
      Hope this helps

@@justsomeguywithoutamask9602 I see your point and I kinda agree but I do feel like jealous rage is just better, what defensive options does she lose, she gains a decent reversal, her normals and specials don’t get any smaller, her movement becomes a lot better too, to me there’s no real downside, I feel like the main difference between a stance and an install is that a stance has both upsides and downsides and you need both stances, while an install is a state you want to get into as your win condition, or at least a win condition (or can get into for some kind of huge power up, I don’t think being garbage due to its downsides disqualifies sol’s level 2 dragon install from that one game from being an install) I don’t think anyone would be like “oh yeah this character is balanced” if you made A.B.A. permanently in jealous rage, goku moroha is an install on an install kind of like gohan’s levels in dbfz
Mostly I feel like calling it a stance just doesn’t convey the right thing, when you think of a stance you tend to think of a mode that is for a different purpose in a character, like a defensive and an offensive stance, where with A.B.A. in strive jealous rage at least to me feels like what you’re supposed to be going for and normal mode is so awful at basically everything to incentivize going into jealous rage and using your win condition

My favorite install IMO is Lowain summoning Yggdrasil, because Lowain is entirely recontextualizing the match if he wins.
Lowain's biggest gag is the fact that if he wins, the match is entirely recontextualized into something that never actually happened, which iirc is normally a bar story.
With the super-art active, the match is changed to be a dream sequence where Lowain's ass is saved by a lady he's crushing on and, to my knowlege, that he isn't actually friends with.
And it's even funnier when the install is frame 1 invincible.
Despite being a (literal) giant skill-check, to my knowlege Iggy will still be really useful to finish opponents off, because even if they guess correctly she still does huge chip damage. And she is also a get-out-of-jail free card due to the frame-1 invuln. Both of which totally fit the idea of the dream sequence.
Oh, also, if you dislike mario party, his other super is ALSO an install, though with that one he just stacks himself onto his brothers. Which also deals a lot of chip damage.

MVC3 has a lot of pretty interesting installs, aside from the universal x-factor
Zero's afterimage that has a frame delay, letting him do infinites and hit high and low at the same time.
Morrigan's astral vision that gives her a similar clone to zero but it's mirrored instead of delayed, allowing her to flood the screen with projectiles.
Strider's ouroboros is really cool but I feel like it's way too short for the three meter cost. Even a few more seconds and Strider might've been an anchor on par with Vergil or Phoenix.
Dante and Vergil both have devil trigger which is just a standard damage and speed install, butVergil also has spiral swords which is pretty unique for making Vergil borderline immune to projectiles in conjunction with Yamato normals. Plink dashing through Morrigan's projectile flood with it active makes you feel like the protagonist.
Phoenix's install is insanely resource intensive but you get the best character in the game as a side effect, and you're essentially guaranteed X-Factor as well unless you open your fifth eye and use it to secure a kill.

His overdrive gives him access to all seals but iirc still doesn't let him use either distortion at max level, even his OD unique distortion only unlocks level 1 of all of his seals and no further. Hakumen's Mugen is a more reasonable example of an install for BB imo.

    • @zaktak4380
      @zaktak4380 8 месяцев назад +6

Guys why are you saying that overdrive being a system mechanic disqualifies it from being an install? Is dust from gg not an overhead because it's universal? The video even mentions the V system from SfV, which is also a system mechanic.

    • @ListlessWither
      @ListlessWither 8 месяцев назад +1

@@zaktak4380 Okay, yeah my b. I guess I should reword and clarify I think OD is definitely an install but unlike V Trigger-which is more a case by case basis on whether or not it actually is, is more interesting to talk about since its less of a given I guess and I'm guessing they just knew more about SFV than BB. I just thought your example of Susanoo is one of the weaker ones, like Izanami is a better example of interesting ODs imo-and I'm a Susanoo main in that game

    • @zaktak4380
      @zaktak4380 8 месяцев назад +2

@@ListlessWither I wasn't mentioning Susanoo as an example for OD, rather as an interesting take on a character powering up. I admit that his seals being an install is debatable though (maybe more of a level mechanic) thats why I also mentioned Jubei. As for Hakumen and some other characters, their installs aren't all that playstyle defining.

5:01 Correction - He doesn't quite turn into a *better* version of another character. Because while he may get those stat buffs, his copy mode lacks a *very* important capability - supers.
For a number of SF3 characters, the super is a quite substantial tool in their kit, such as Chun-Li's raw super closing out games with nearly guaranteed chip damage, and the aforementioned Genei-jin from Yun. And since those two are the best two characters in the game, you'll be seeing them a lot, which makes X-Copy even worse.

I LOVE install supers, and i also loved the video, youre probably the most underrated FG content creator. Anyway i think a cool idea for an install super that i havent seen yet would be for a stance switch character, combining all of the stances and their moves into one, making them much more well rounded and powerful.

    • @syrelian
      @syrelian 9 месяцев назад

I feel like I've seen that idea somewhere but I forget where
From a design perspective, you really have two figure out two major problems from how I see it
A: A lot of stance characters draw strength directly from HAVING a Stance Mode, since it often gives them a very safe special cancel for blockstrings and followups, cheating the frame data as it were, and giving that up needs some kind of consummate return
B: This kind of ties into A, but a lot of characters have multiple moves off one stance state, or unique movement options such as a different jump or dash, which means you need to figure out how to integrate that into their normal moveset in a natural feeling way and often without removing their normal options, having a stance often means having a second toolbox, whether its a couple moves out of the stance, or a whole second moveset
I don't think either of these are necessarily unsolvable, in particular, A is pretty easily solved by just making it that under install, the stance command special cancels you... to neutral state with some kind of short animation, so you keep the advantages of using it, if it happened without an animation it'd be its own kind of fucked up, people pay meter for that kind of privilege once, getting to buy that shit at monthly rates would be wild
B is a much harder task that is likely unsolvable for a lot of character designs, especially the more options and the more discrete their changes are between stances, you could obviously normalize any base spec changes like move speed or special mobility options(eg an air dash only existing on one side), but stuff like having different normals or specials gets a lot harder to solve, especially if they don't reflect a clear paradigm swap, someone having an invincible reversal on one side thats like, a standard projectile on the other doesn't exactly blend well, if you wanted to be fucked up its now two projectiles, one at an angle and also its now invuln like the reversal but like, that alone is a massive power up and not simply blending stance concepts
You'd likely have better results trying this with a character that has restrictions rather than mode-based abilities, if that makes sense, releasing limiters is often easier than melding strengths, a Perfect Stance type gimmick is something you kind of need to approach from the get-go to make everything bend to the concept

I think Overdrive from BlazBlue deserves a special mention. It's a system mechanic that uses the same resource as Burst that powers up your character for 2-8 seconds depending on your life total and how you entered OD state.
In addition to powering up your supers and preventing the opponent from Bursting, each character gains unique buffs, often related to their Drive moves.
It's also notable because multiple install supers in older BB titles were changed into that character's Overdrive state, such as Ragna's Blood Kain and Bang's FuRinKaZan.

Never thought of VT as installs but it makes sense. Then BBCP/CF overdrives probably count too. I'd say Jin is among the crazier ones, due to the sheer combo routing potential and reset opportunities it presents. Terumi's too, making him gain more meter (and drain it), able to cancel supers into supers, and OD may improve every character's supers but it's definitely incredibly prevalent in him with how stupidly high his damage can get. Bang is maybe the craziest one, replacing every movement with an omnidirectional dash, which, if he got some of his seals, are invulnerable teleports, can chain in one another, be canceled into from mostly anything, and crossup.
Worth mentioning for people who don't play BBCF that OD can be done as a guard cancel, is invuln on activation, is available from roundstart, and uses the same resource as burst (a combo breaker) which is carried between rounds.Someone OD activating through some of your moves is a legit terrifying sight, especially on chars that get insane return from it. OD also locks the opponent out of burst.

So few notes to Vira: While she is undeniably strong, install doesn't make her the strongest in the slightest as characters like Cagliostro, Nier, Seox and Zeta definitely outrank her and the others.
Air options are nice, correct, but with how punishing anti airs are it is a huge risk to jump, let alone predictably so. She is supposed to be a rush-downy midranger and it is just one of many approach tools that the game provides.
Also her wake up two hit dp can be actually countered without much difficulty, far from free - experienced players know how to block first hit and spot dodge the other and can get a full punish very consistently, which I have learned on my own skin, it was painful but necessary learning experience. It also goes rather low so is a very meh anti air.
Where I found install really shines is in the combo extensions - her Ultimate Darkane now ground bounces on hit leading to long midscreen combos and the Heavy Red Beryl Sword allows for a combo lanch extension in the corner. That and her super in install is a fullscreen beam, and thus one of the best projectile punishes in the game, if not the very best, but its long start up makes the timing a little tricky to get right and it is not air unblockable.

The character I most think of when talking about Install mechanics is ABA.
It's not like a super which turns a normal character strong for a while. She's a character who starts the game genuinely weak and outright needs her install to be playable. Successful fighting on the back foot gives her the amazing tools she gets when powered up, and gets an additional powerup afterwards for a super.
Similar characters being Amy in SoulCalibur6 who starts off lacking, but when she throws enough roses at the opponent permanently powers up for the rest of the match. Red rose form giving her powerful additional followups to her attacks making her an offensive juggernaut, and White Rose form giving her better defensive frame data and parries.
Or Jamie in StreetFighter6 who starts off with half his moveset and doing 10% less damage than other characters, but as he gets drunker on age-rating-satisfactory herbal tea unlocks the rest of his kit and ends up doing 10% more damage than everyone else.

Easily my favorite Installs in any fighting game come from Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. X-Factor is probably the most controversial comeback/momentum system in fighting games, but it does enable nearly any character to be viable. Zero's Sougenmu, Morrigan's Astral Vision, Dante & Vergil's Devil Triggers (plus Vergil's Spiral Swords), Dark Phoenix to name a few, but my personal favorite:
Phoenix Wright's Turnabout Mode. Though you don't spend meter to go into it, working up from collecting evidence in Investigation Mode to landing an Objection in Trial Mode, being able to become one of the strongest characters in the game for a limited time - nothing is more satisfying to see, and it's why I still watch & play the game today.

There's a video by Bafael in his Bad Balance series about Twelve that explains that X-Copy is actually his worst super. He has no access to supers or EX specials, making the only 'good' X-Copy character Akuma since he has no EX moves. Plus the bar length and the fact you can only stock 1 makes accessing Twelve's EX moves really costly too. And even in the Akuma matchup, when your install ends you take massive bonus damage making KKZ an instant kill while offering other characters a massive punish. You'd rather take SA1 since it gives him damage that the rest of the cast gets normally while not sacrificing the ability to use EX.

Truth be told, your example of requiem (GER) is a bit off since it was highly anticipated from the manga's debut over a decade ago. People have been waiting with baited breath to see it so I wouldn't say it's a hyped anime moment and more so a hyped manga moment. But it still was exciting to see so you got that part right.
On the other hand, Dragonball Z's transformation occurred pre-social media and at the very early days of internet (DSL and dial up speeds) so it was way less known, thus the surprise to many in-anime was at a majority level, making it more an exciting anime moment.

  • @MSCDonkeyKong

I'm surprised you didn't mention sparking blast with Dragon Ball, considering it's how the game creates that feeling of the anime power up without spending whole characters on it's idea. It's an install that can basically be used to eliminate mistakes in the match. Like X-factor mixed with burst. (I'm also surprised you didn't mention X-Factor because of how infamous it is).
Got hit by a raw level 3 or a combo that started with a DP, and it didn't kill, but you want to recover all of your blue health without switching teammates? Spark.
Need to get your opponent off of you and to reset to neutral? Spark, because the startup is basically burst. This is really valuable!
Used all of your assists during a blockstring? Spark, since you get unlimited assist cooldown on top of better pressure from jump-cancellable normals. (Your pressure will become godlike with spark and assists!)
Your opponent blocked your DP? Spark! Every move cancels into it, so sparking will make you safe on block!
Fucked up a combo? Spark quick enough and you can probably still get a knockdown. You'll be in advantage since your assists will recover!
Since it's an excellent combo tool due to the huge damage buff, and its ability to be cancelled into, and is so easily combod out of (as long as it's not the combo starter), you can even use it to undo the biggest mistake in the match: the opponent's life.
Note that it particularly recreates the feeling of the anime transformation in more than one way. Being used earlier on in the match gives the feeling of a powerful yet temporary transformation creating momentum for the heroes and overwhelming the villain, which I'd compare to a scene like Goku unlocking Mastered Ultra Instinct against Jiren. It didn't last, but it created the momentum the heroes needed to win the TOP.
Being used later on in the match, specifically on your anchor is more similar to a complete momentum shift, and as you lose teammates, still having your sparking blast basically means that it's your only teammate. Combined with everything you can use to make it safe or improve your pressure, and with how it's the only real way to recover blue health with your anchor character, it turns the story of the match into the story of a complete and utter momentum shift: IE, Goku unlocking Super Saiyan on Namek.
On anchor, the timer for spark will not run out during combos, too, so there's a ton of Touch of Death possibilities, especially combined with the passive damage buff you get when you're on your last character. And the challenge then becomes about how well you're utilizing your spark, and if you can find the opening you need to destroy your opponent.
And what I think is so interesting with spark is how much it plays into the story being told of the match and your characters. Think of the game's more dedicated and/or infamous anchor characters, like Base Goku, Beerus, Z-Broly and Tien.
Since SSJ goku is being touted as the Ryu of the game, it allows Base-Goku to play like how early Goku was written in DBZ; he's literally the grandfather of the transformations trope and full of comebacks. He also has the Spirit Bomb, which depending on your playstyle can mean Base Goku can unleash a move he'd been working to build up to it's full power since the beginning of the match.
Anchor Beerus is like Beerus waking up from his nap and seeing shit is bad and using 0.01% of his power to correct everything.
Z Broly is an infamous-as-hell anchor character, but it's fitting because in his original movie he's also infamous for reverse-jumping 4 motherfuckers all at the same time. So Z Broly does well during 1v3s.
Tien's is the most interesting to me, because character is a pretty honest warrior, which is reflected in his playstyle, yet his level 3 supers have INSANE damage but also have INSANE drawbacks that are negated when he is on anchor.
His level 1 super does self-damage but has some of the highest damage in the game (without extra bar or schenanigans. But he can also spend extra bar for more damage!).
And on top of that, he has his Shin Kikoho/Neo Tri-Beam, which deals super huge health damage but will deal huge self damage. And he can deal extra hits for more bar (and self damage). However, the self-damage is decreased if you're the last character alive, and is entirely negated if you're the last alive and you're in sparking blast. Both buffs will not only negate their downsides, but also amplify their damage. Which is huge.
The move is a reference to a scene in the show where Tien came out of nowhere against Cell, a villain notably leagues stronger than he is, and blasted him to SMITHEREENS at the cost of his own health, buying the good guys JUST BARELY enough time to survive and get away. It's also great as a reversal or as a whiff punish.
His other level 3 super is his friend Chiaotzu blowing himself up, which can just be avoided by the oppontent ducking if you try to hit it raw. However, when used at the end of a combo, it has the HIGHEST minimum damage in the game, with no additional meter spent or silly win conditions.
This means that Chiaotzu's sacrifice is actually a better combo finisher as opposed to Shin Kikoho/Neo Tri Beam being excellent when used raw. However, the sacrifice it has two downsides:
    A. You can't use any Chiaotzu related moves for the rest of the match. Because he, yknow, died.
    B. There's a long grieving animation at the end of the move if it doesn't kill.
The reason why I mention these moves because of how sparking blast impacts them on the OPPONENT's side.
For Neo Tri Beam/Shin Kikoho, the health regeneration means that if you've used it against a opponent who is in sparking blast, and it doesn't finish off the opponent, and you want to use repeated Shin Kikohos, the opponent will more or less shrug it off while the repeated ones do less and less damage to them. But it does waste the sparking timer down.
This is funny because, again, in the scene in the manga/anime that the move is a reference to, it did INSANE damage to the villain and stalled for time, yet Cell was fine long-term since he can regenerate.
And for Chiaotzu's sacrifice, the downsides make it so that it's a move that you NEED to make sure that it kills. Because since there's health regeneration, if the opponent is in sparking blast and Chiaotzu does not kill, then that long grieving animation means that the opponent will regenerate ALL of the health that Chiaotzu did, making Chiaotzu's sacrifice completely meaningless.
Which is completely accurate to the show, because Chiaotzu's sacrifice DID do fuck-all and the villain just shrugged it off.
And those are cool because Tien is incentivised to either A. doing a completely accurate reference to when he come in clutch to save the day last-minute, or B. "I've won, but at the cost of my friend..."
And sparking blast is either used to amplify the feeling of Tien's clutch anime comeback moment, or put the opponent into the shoes of the villain who shrugs off these powerful and devastating attacks that are costing Tien everything to use.
So yeah, I have no idea how this didn't get a segment.

Bloody roar predates GG by a year, i was wondering if that counts

Totally! There are certainly installs that predate guilty gear same as there being transformations in Japanese media before dragon ball, it’s simply that GG popularized the idea and had it named after itself

Funny thing about twelves x-copy is that while it does give a damage boost, while in it twelve cant spend meter so the x-copy version of some characters like chun and yang are actually quite a bit worse than their regular versions due to how amazing their metered options are

my favorite instal is phoenix wright on umvc3 where he basically plays as a stance character to get evidence in one, press objections in another to them finally enter his Turnabout install that is super broken.

If we wanna talk about installs for everyone like SFV, can't miss Blazblue.
Overdrives are so fucking cool man. They can really enhance the fantasy of any character and due to the resources tied to it it's not toxic like V-trigger

In Kyanta while using an install you can't use ex moves so they're generally very weak. But instead of an ultra you can take demon mode which is an install that lets you use 5 ex moves for one bar and likely one shot someone

4:10 light attacks don't build meter but mediums and heavies do so yun is whiffing cr.mp multiple times to build meter

BlazBlue is great because ever since Overdrive was added as a mechanic, every character has at least one install super

Probably one of the hardest kinds of supers to make strong due to it's wonky opportunity cost. Street Fighter and SF3 specifcally has a lot of quirks that make any Install you can't ToD or at least two touch with inviable. For one the install timer is your bar. You can't use ex or build any meter until it ends, so the meter cost is deceptively high. That's why a lot of newer games tie installs to moves that actually do something or to a separate resource entirely. But to add insult to injury, normal Supers in 3s don't give the opponent any meter but installs still do, so you're essentially paying to lose the resource war in a lot of MU's.
Oro's Tengu Stone is a great example of this. It's amazing for stun combos, arguably better than Genei Jin, but the meter economy is terrible. Characters with short super confirms or even a decent EX confirm simply get to cash out so much more often that winning a round with it rarely translates into winning the game.
Genei Jin is the exception, the bar is short and Yun is pretty good without EX. But best of all, for some reason it doesn't give the opponent any meter for it's duration. Even Yang's Seiei Enbu gives the opponent bar on hit. Guess Capcom always had a soft spot for Yun.

Wait wait wait, I've somehow never noticed, in any of the shit I've played or watched, that Genei Jin empowered strikes don't generate meter for the opponent what the fuck

    • @ChiefKenn
      @ChiefKenn 9 месяцев назад +1

definitely happens because when genei-jin is active all of yuns attacks have super attack priority (which also means you can't trade against him) but also means that like other supers, the opponent gets no meter from getting hit

My Favorite Install is Mega Gengar from Pokken, cause unlike other super who are just not practical or not flashy/interesting, Gengar's Burst Mode is quite literally is his win condition.

Soul calibur 6 technically has installs in soul charge where it freeze times and your buttons do chip damage and you do more damage but groh and azwel specifically are super charged up and have all of their best features. Haohmaru in sc6 has rage explosion which gives him access to Issey but you lose access to rage for rest of the match if you go for it so theres also that.
