I think that's actually one of the most important questions about that film. Why was he wearing that mask? Him wearing it is extremely poignant and it really isn't obvious, there are all kinds of interpretations possible. That pragmatic interpretation that it was about hiding his identity is rather simplistic and less interesting for me personally, even if possible somehow, on a naive level, as you point out. What if he was wearing it to actually express his identity? Also, what's the actual function of that very mask? Pretending to be the main character of an action movie, so some kind of a self-pastiche? Protecting stuntmen against injuries - masks perhaps shows us, that the driver does atrocities while being afraid/sensing that it will eventually hurt him? Masks have many functions and meanings in our culture, after all. Even more so stuntman's masks, it seems... Refn plays with us
@Smirkingactually, I bought HM 1 and 2 last month during the steam summer sale and played through both in like a week. amazing games. I totally see how drive inspired them in part.
4:44 is the moment where Nino realises he fucked with the wrong guy. He was so afraid of getting killed by the Mafia, but he had no idea that the Driver was far worse than any Italian gangster they could have sent after him.
This scene is really important as it shows that the driver at one minute can be super calm and happy but then can be extremely violent and on point it’s a class of 2 personalities in 1
Did the scene where he blew someone's head off with a shotgun and the threat he uttered to the person at the diner that he would kick in his teeth in, not clear enough up until this point?
@@ShutterSnapped this is what I mean the driver can be calm and chill but as soon as his or other lives are on the line he jumps into action and erupts all this clear emotion through the source of violence
I think the diner scene showed it far better, where he calmly threatens the guy who wants him to do another job. He was already upset at Standard’s return, so you can see the rage bubbling inside and then about to explode.
@@DMalltheway I was thinking the same thing. The Sergio Leone thing with zooming in slowly, to show the persons emotions, especially with the eye contact. And the fact that he isn’t blinking in the scene, at 0:45 shows that he is cold. This is cinematic genius.
I absolutely adore the song choice. The lyrics, the mood, the uneasy beauty, it fits so well just to be expertly removed at the end to show you how fucked this situation is for Nino.
The moments you can’t prepare for will always be the strongest, pushing people to limits they knew and disregarding every sense of self-preservation to save the thing that is about to be taken from them, whatever the cost may be
Would love to find a good analysis of this sequence. Especially when he's looking through the window into Nino's Pizzeria. What's the significance of that moment when Nino is laughing but that woman seems to be totally indifferent or put off by him?
well definitely not a deep analysis but I like to think that it was meant only to showcase how much of an a hole he was just a little touch up by the director to emphasize it even more
Maybe a parallel to the Driver and his relationship? Hell, could signify how insignificant Nino and his stunts really are, or how at the end of the day the mob doesn’t care much for him. IDk
Always reminds me of Gary Busey's scene wearing the mask with a cig in his mouth breathing heavily at the start of DC Cab. Brought this flick to my mom's place to watch during a visit. Kept asking me if the chauffeur was OK for the rest of the movie.
Why does Nino run into the water to get away from Driver? And Nino doesn't have a gun on him? I guess he's just completely dazed and out of it from the crash...
Two reasons: 1. To disguise himself. He's killing Nino in public, so it's safer in case of witnesses. 2. At this point in the film, Driver has lost sense of who he is. He's been forced to commit horrible violence and then he finds one of the only people he cares about murdered because he got him involved. The mask represents his letting go of the person he used to be. It's symbolic.
@@user-jt7ju8zm8u From a filmmaking perspective, the mask represents his repressed violent side. It’s why it was featured so prominently earlier in the film during the stunt scene.
This movie is a masterpiece to me however I wonder how nobody in the process of making a movie didn't notice the timing with raming and chrashing a car is a bit off in this scene

He wears it to be scary and because Refn wanted to channel Michael Myers. Question answered.

Yes!!!
It's like a disturbing paring of beauty and horror. It's almost like he's a true monster and a triumphant hero at the same time.

Why does Nino run into the water to get away from Driver? And Nino doesn't have a gun on him? I guess he's just completely dazed and out of it from the crash...
I thought the same. Perhaps Nino in his bewildered state thought drowning in the ocean was a better fate than what the driver was going to do to him.
It’s a metaphor of the frog going across the river. Driver gets on top of him and drowns him. He tells that to Mr. Rose in the following scene.
