I thought it would be an issue, but i've repotted a few of my plants that have wood stakes and the portion buried in the soil is always fine. It might be because my soil mix is pretty airy and I wait a while between waterings, so maybe the wood has time to dry out?
@@kateshaw1581 Several ways: 1) you can extrude hollow tubes, if you have a big one. then de- form them while leather hard to maybe make look like bark. 2) you could make slabs of clay , roll them to a desired thickness ( not too thin) and then roll and hand build them together- you can roll them around a object of the shape you want . If that inner supporting shape is non- porous, then cover it in a wrap of layers like dry news paper. or fabric, burlap , anything that will prevent the clay from sticking to the non- porous surface and help it dry by wicking the moisture away . You would not want to glaze the piece with a normal shiny glaze, you can pick a clay with a natural color you like- maybe white , yellow or red , brown or black. and you could paint it with an oxide, stain or under glaze or even a terra siggilata, while still moist . 3) mix both methods. Good luck ! let me know how it went!🙂
@@kateshaw1581 do you mean clay as in LECA? You could insert a support by drilling into the base of your branch and inserting a pvc or bamboo stake or something to go into the soil allowing the branch to rest at a higher level
Looks around her rooms & see plants in nursery pots on counters/tables. 🤦🏻♀️ Thank you for sharing unique ways to incorporate plants as decor! I look forward to trying these different methods out.
All So Beautiful !!! I like to use drift wood instead of moss poles I'm in PEI so lots of beaches to collect from so it's free cant beat free lol I like top dressing too it just makes the plant look complete and more elegant !! Great video 😄👍🌱🌿
I would really love to know how you water these plants especially the ones like the Thai Basil that has such a shallow root system and then a top dressing and the mounted ones
I love this SO MUCH! Your content is always so thoughtful and innovative! Honestly thought I was the only one who thought that way about moss poles xD! I'll definitely be raiding my local reptile shops for display supplies now!
I LOVE these types of videos! To me plants are like living art in my home, I don’t like to hide them away in a tent or something. We all spend so much money and effort acquiring the plants and caring for them but I see so many people neglect their presentation. I think it’s one of the most enjoyable aspects to owning such beautiful plants. I got so much inspiration from this video, thank you! 😊
I love the way you are displaying your plants I have done the same with a few of mine but the beautiful branch with the plant running up it is gorgeous and I’m going to do that with some of mine. Thanks for the ideas. Enjoy your day.
Your plant collection is so unique! You have one of the most chill and creative vibes around. Can you do tips or ideas about which plants suits best for your home and personality? I will be looking forward to it! Yaay! 🌱❤️
So pretty! The nice sand and manzanita remind me of ADA nature aquariums. Being in the northwest, I think moss is my favorite top dressing. You can also buy cool, curly willow branches at Michael's craft stores for plant supports.
The branch as a trellis for the vining plants is actually clever. I have a few extra unused branches for my aquarium; now they'll have a purpose. From bonsai, the only idea I use is placing a mesh under the pot especially if it has holes. The mesh keeps dirt and substrate from draining out of the pot and placing pot shards or stones to cover the holes do not work as well as a mesh.
I look forward to your videos. The music and the vibe is so calming. ❤️ Can you make a video on moss and maybe go into detail on how it is used on top of plant soil and how to keep it alive? Thank youuu
I might in a future video! But for now, I'll leave some tips here. I always wondered how bonsai growers are able to keep their moss alive, considering their plants are often in direct sun and the soil is very fast draining. The key is to water every day or every other day, and by water, I mean completely drench the pot and moss. For this reason, I've only been able to keep moss as a top dressing on plants I'm growing on my balcony. Outside in California, it's pretty dry, warm, and windy, so potted plants dry out quickly. Thus allowing me to water every day without overwatering my plants. Also, the live moss shown in the video was collected from my aunt's yard in San Diego, CA lol I create a very airy mix, something like 50% or more of pumice/perlite/leca/lava rock and then the rest is potting soil. This plus the California climate allows me to water every day and give the moss a constant supply of water. Something to note is that moss doesn't actually have roots, so most or all of the water it receives is from atmospheric water or water directly passing through it. TLDR: put it on top of a very well draining mix, and shower daily or every other day.
Prettyyyy i also just use some branches from my mango tree that has fallen as the climbing poles of my pothos and so far so good! but one time i saw.. that the branch i used HAD SOME ROOTS AND I WAS SO SHOCKED- CUZ I THOUGHT IT WAS A DEAD BRANCH SO.. yep that was a very surprising thing for me Love the video and the aesthetics
Absolutely beautiful! Your creativeness is so refreshing to watch and admire. I also feel that the way we present our plants can make it so much more intriguing.
This was very inspirational! You are an artist. Thanks for the suggestion about branches instead of moss poles, because I live in a dry climate, too, and moss poles never do well here.
I love the top dressing I agree dirt can make the plant look incomplete in a way? But the top dressing doesn’t that mean that it’ll take longer for water to dry like when you water your plants again or like can contribute to root rot since all the wet soil is trapped in? Or have you not had any issues? It’s because I’m considering top dressing my plants as well
it depends, the sand definitely makes drying times longer, but the turface and lava rock don't affect it too much. Lava rock and turface (to a lesser extent) are pretty porous and allow air to flow through freely
I was looking for different alternatives to moss poles the other day, because like you I don't like the look of them (🤫😆). I came across those hooped bamboo stakes that a lot of people use in the garden. I could imagine they look really cute too. Either just one of them, or two creating some sort of obelisk.
Hey Benji, Watched this video a couple days ago and I made sure to pick up some drift wood to replace the moss pole on my Florida Ghost. Thanks for the inspiration.
omg the natural wood stakes idea is great! i've been thinking of trellising a few of my hoyas so thank you for the tip :-) i also love to using bonsai techniques like top dressing akadama and wire - having control over how the plant is presented is truly half of the fun!!
Your video is so relaxing, it's like a Ray of sunshine ! And your interior design tastes are so good, thank you for your advice, this was so inspiring! 🌞
Thanks for another great vid! Such beautiful ideas as always! I started top dressing all my plants just w peat moss and occasionally accent on top w a lil crystal or rocks, pieces of horticultural charcoal etc.. has made a huuuuge difference aesthetically :)
I just must compliment you ( Benni) on your beautiful plant ways and thank you for the great information . I’m a new subscriber and already learning a lot .
You seem so wholesome and genuine and actually knowledgeable. All of the “influencers” getting into plants are so over the top, very into status. I gave you a follow bc I get the complete opposite vibe from you. Thanks for being real. 💚
Thank you for this video! I'm curious to know regarding the anthurium you mounted - do you recommend treating the wood a certain way to minimize risk of any kind of fungus or disease transferring to the plant? Secondly, regarding top dressings - everytime I use those and I water the plants, it ruins the top dressing, especially with sand. Any advice on how to keep that look while watering?
omg i needed this😭 i still live with my mom but our walls are kind of bland- i’d love to try this out ….. plus, now i’ll have an excuse to buy more plants 🤨🌱
I love using sticks instead of moss poles, I use ones that my dog brings home from walks hehe. I scrape off any bark and stick em in the soil. It's super simple and much cheaper - sphagnum moss gets pretty expensive and is not always sustainably farmed so I try to use it very sparingly. I also agree that moss poles take away for the plant - sticks look much more natural and I think really beautiful :))
Hi Benji! I’m learning so much from watching your videos! I’m definitely ditching those moss poles now 😆.. just a quick question, how do you water your anthuriums that are potted in sphagnum moss and no pot holes?? Thanks!
I appreciate the original ideas you have for your videos and plant-keeping in general. You can only watch Lowe's tours so many times 😅 Btw what is the plant at 7:40?
I love the branches. Would you recommend leaving some soil on the root ball before wrapping it with moss and mounting it? I did this with my small staghorn fern. It seems to be doing well, and I feel like it just adds more moisture retention. I forget about watering it sometimes, so I feel like for me, its a good idea 😁
Omg I love all these ideas I’m so inspired. I really like the moss top dressing, I’m guessing that’s live moss? Where can I get some and would you have to bottom water for that? Does it keep moisture in for too long? Sorry for all the questions I just want to try them out. :)
yeah i do! it actually makes it much easier to water. Sometimes I run into problems with water kicking up the soil or water splashing, but top dressings can prevent that problem. Lava rock sort of diffuses the water as it is poured which lessens the impact, and prevents splashing. With sand you have to be more careful, if you pour water from too high the sand layer will likely get kicked up and mix with the soil underneath.
If you're drilling anyway, next time you can make the ball thing first and then tie that ball through holes to the plank! Then you won't see the strings att all!! Thanks for the inspiration!
I couldn't find the branches ☹️☹️ so, I found some sort of branch and added that to my plant, it looks good but was hoping to make it look like yours after getting inspired from the Instagram post of yours ⭐⭐
Benji has one of the most genius aesthetics all round. So unique and calming.
im honored 😭🌱
Love the use of branches. They look way better than moss poles. Do you do anything to the bottom of the woods stakes to prevent rot?
I thought it would be an issue, but i've repotted a few of my plants that have wood stakes and the portion buried in the soil is always fine. It might be because my soil mix is pretty airy and I wait a while between waterings, so maybe the wood has time to dry out?
I also love this instead of moss poles. I'm wondering how I would do this with clay.

I just started designing with my plants. Started at the entry and moved through the house.
Benji doesn't have a green thumb. He has a whole ass green hand.
You mean a green ass?
Ahh I’ve hated the look of moss poles too, and tbh it makes sense to use branches for epiphytes!! Can’t wait to set some up, thank you for the idea ☺️

Yo!! I’m in NB!
How do you too dress and not get it messed up? My issue with it is that when I too water it can get messy looking.
